First word of warning: a lot of people find that they either can't tolerate or don't like the same things after surgery that they did before surgery. A VERY common thread on BP is "I used [X brand] of shakes before surgery and liked them, but now I can't stand them, what other brands should I try." So don't think you need to find your brands/flavors and stock up before surgery. The better plan might be to buy those variety packs to try after your surgery. As far as protein shakes, I stick with the premade Premier Protein shakes (the ones with 30oz of protein). For protein shake powders, I like Keto Chow and just mix it with water and not add the fat source (like heavy whipping cream or butter). I also like the Protein2O protein waters. For salty/crunchy snacks, the Quest chips and Asha foods popped water lilly seeds.

You’ll notice lots of differences in pre surgical & post surgical plans all the time. I know my surgeon puts different patients on different pre surgical diets. He considers many factors like weight loss history, health status, how much weight they have to lose, etc. in his decision. He put my friend on all shakes. He instructed a friend of hers to do two shakes & a meal. Me, he put on keto. You just have to follow your plan. Your surgeon likely recommended it for a reason. You could always ask them why.

Reaction to my whey powder? Best other protein?
Berry78 replied to GotProlactinoma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Absolutely not true. I haven't had protein powder since trying it those first couple weeks postop (and trying it one more time 3 months post). My protein goal is 70g and I always get at least 65g. Blended tuna salad was actually good after all the milk and broth. I only had it a couple times since I preferred greek yogurt and cottage cheese..fewer dishes to wash! Lol! The sugar in the kefir IS a trade off. It'll knock you out of ketosis, but that kefir really will help you meet those protein goals. You don't have to be in ketosis to lose weight. Remember, the liquid diet isn't forever. Once you move to solids you can always go back onto a keto diet if you want. To me, those first two months are about healing, not weight loss, so I did what I had to to support that healing (i.e. meeting goals). And even with that outlook, I lost 30lbs the first 2 months. -
I did two weeks on keto. Had one friend on shakes & another on a combination for three weeks. Seems it depends on your surgeon & your starting weight. Post surgery I was fluids for two weeks, purées for two weeks followed by soft foods for another two before beginning solid foods. Take it slowly. Your tummy will tell you what you can or can’t tolerate but I wouldn’t push it through the stages quickly. Took me a good three weeks to feel up to working but I always take a long time to get over things (healing, viruses, etc. - I have Gilbert’s & my BP was low). No lifting for two weeks & then less than 5kg for another two. Then no more than 10kg for the next two. Remember you’re healing from major stomach surgery. Always had a large glass of wine every night & enjoyed a good scotch or G&T. Now hardly ever drink. Lost the taste for it & don’t miss it. Certainly don’t need it to socialise with friends. Plus it was taking an hour to drink a glass. Would avoid mixing with juices - high calories & sugar. Also beware of addiction swapping. It’s a concern for post weight loss surgery patients to turn their addiction for food to something else. Carbonated drinks are very filling. Better to be getting in your protein & good nutrients than filling your small tummy with soft drinks. (Plus I personally have an issue with artificial sweeteners - they still feed your sugar craving.) If the tool is to help you & you intend to be successful long term you will have to change your relationship with food: how you eat, what you eat, when you eat. It takes work and your life will change but for the better.

Goal weight achieved, but now, how do I eat healthy? Need tips please!
lizonaplane replied to CrowLuv's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I agree 100% with @Jaelzion Once you are past the specific restrictions faze, you have to learn what works best for your body to stay in a healthy weight. There are weight maintainers here who swear by keto and others who do vegan or Mediterranean. It's the same for people who never had WLS. The truth is that there are ZERO randomized controlled long term studies on nutrition because we can't control what humans eat in the wild, and most humans are not willing to live in a cage for a few years. I can't imagine why. So we don't know what is the "best" healthy diet; we can only guess. In the absence of good science, we have warring factions of "experts" who will sell your their diet books. Talk to a nutritionist who specializes in bariatric patients, but also think about what foods make you and your new stomach happy. Are you a true carnivore? Probably a traditional mediterranean diet won't work for you (also true if grains don't sit well with your new stomach!). Maybe try low carb! Do fatty foods now upset your tummy? Maybe don't do keto! Some nutritionists will tell you that artificial sweeteners are the worst thing in the world but honestly, there is no good evidence of that. Most of the limited studies have serious methodological flaws (I studied research methodology as an undergrad and I can pick apart almost any study). Newer research shows that they're basically weight neutral. Maybe you don't want to use them anyway, Fine, but if you're the type of person who needs a sweet treat, consider them an option. -
Pro-op diet crankiness! Cranky when hungry...
JennCH replied to starfish108's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm glad to know that I am not the only one having the "pre-op" crankiness. I think some of it for me isn't so much the hunger, but the ketosis. I was feeling light headed and shaky and went and got some diabetic keto sticks. Yup...was moderately ketotic. Gotta talk to the nutrish on Monday because I work in a job where I can't be shaky or light headed. Jenn -
From what I've read, carbonation can stretch the stomach. Did you try the pouch reset diet? Why do you need to have so many calories on the keto diet to get in your protein? Are you eating high fat foods?

Try looking at http://www.ibreatheimhungry.com/ she has lots of low carb, keto recipes. Also just Google "low carb" whatever you want to eat and you will find a recipe. -
Wanted to see what your program says about raw vegetables, bread and alcohol
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have a few reasons for not drinking. Keto alone put me into near liver failure (due to taking chemo type meds), so yeah booze is a no go for me. -
Also, a huge shoutout to keto! I did it for a year and a half. It wasn't successful for me since my body is broken (thus the need for surgery), but it was such a wonderful diet. Let me know if you ever want some recipe ideas or need help with that stuff.

I'm not the one who wants to keep it a secret.
OutsideMatchInside replied to oopsydaisy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This so much. I run my own business and people ask me all the time how much money I make. I give a fake number every single time. A rude question does not deserve a response. I tell people the truth, I eat low carb. I eat Keto. I adopted a dog so I have to walk everyday. I removed a lot of stress from my life. I stopped eating my feelings. It took me 5 years to get here. All of that is the truth, none of it is a lie. When people ask me why I only have 1 child (only in the midwest I swear) I tell them because I use birth control and that is all I wanted. I don't tell them what method of birth control I use. Honestly WLS is not even why I lost the weight. I lost the weight. I picked WLS to help me and I used it to help me but I could be like most WLS and have failed at it. I only succeed at WLS because I was super strict and worked my ass off. Prior to having surgery myself I thought surgery did all if not most of the work but sugery after 6 months isn't doing anything for people. They have to do the work. If they haven't used that first 6 months of healing to make a real life style change. They are stalled by month 9 and actively gaining by month 12. They never hit goal and over the years they just keep gaining and gaining. All the little threads people make shouting out their surgery date buddies are so cute in the pre-op and early stages. Then as the months go on few and fewer are responding, still losing or at goal. Less than half by year one, then by year 2 it is crickets. Half my WLS buddies who had surgery when I did barely talk to me, because they never hit their goals. It sucks. Stop calling people that don't blab all their business to people that are not entitled to it, liars. A generation ago, this would have never been an issue. The death of privacy is horrific. -
I think this is great, but I also think that you're in the minority for those of us that are fat or were fat. I think it's also interesting that some people who CAN avoid 'trigger' foods for life seem to assume that it's that way for everyone. This assumption leads to a lot of negativity on forums and FB pages (at least from what I've seen) I'm not criticizing you or trying to get contentious - it's just what I notice. I joined this FB page for sleeve/bypass people to (supposedly) share recipes and stuff like that. The lady that ran it (also conveniently had a web store to sell shakes and stuff on) was 10 years out (bypass) and still lived a <20 carb keto lifestyle, maintained a 200lb weight loss, etc. I think the admins were all friends of hers, too. Holy **** was that a sanctimonious crew - one would think that it was some kind of religion where anything with carbs was essentially satan himself. The admins and the people who wanted to be like the admins would totally jump on people's **** when they admitted to having a cookie, or even suggested substituting something in a shake or recipe - in one post, some lady got reamed for saying she put half a banana in her daily shake. I left the group after a couple of days. Point being - some things will change for some people, but the same thing won't change for all of the people. I think we should all take great care to qualify any advice we give on nutrition and eating here - make it very clear that what you're talking about works for you, maybe not the OP. Oh, and be nice and supportive too.

Have you guys ever tried either and did it work for you post op? What are your thoughts? So for those of you who are unfamiliar with each, here's how it works: Keto-great for dropping **** loads of weight. Diet tends to be more fun because it allows you to eat yummy foods like bacon. You still have to watch your macros. But basically your diet consists mostly of protein and fat (yes i said fat) and no sugar or carbs. So it forces your body to use fat as energy, thus causing you to burn calories and fat like crazy. Paleo- more of a lifestyle change so you will be healthier overall and still lose weight but not as dramatic for weight loss. Diet is also low carb and high protein. No processed foods like grains etc are allowed. You are allowed to eat starchy veggies like sweet potatoes, yams etc on this diet. I know people who have tried both and loved it, keto seems to be a winner amongst everyone i've talked to. But since our nutrition needs are different as wls surgery patients, i was wondering if anyone tried it and if it still had the same effect on us.

Bariatric surgery and keto?
catwoman7 replied to deardarkling's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
the first few weeks/months you should follow your clinic's food plan. I do know people who've done keto once they're a few months out, though (or in maintenance - if they're dealing with a few lbs of regain). -
Thinking of increasing caloroes. Good idea? Bad idea?
Justinh125 replied to gamergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I should also point out that before surgery, I was averaging between 3000-5000 calories a day, and wasn't gaining or losing weight at that amount. So for me, even 1200 is a profound reduction and I figure if it takes me 3000 to maintain (at my previously higher weight,) 1200 is probably still low enough to lose. I've found the post-bariatric diet to induce ketogenesis fairly constantly. I've confirmed it with those Keto-sticks you can get at the pharmacy. Given the way the reagent strips react, I figure my body must certainly be breaking down fatty-acids for fuel. Maybe you get some of those and see if you are in a ketogenic state. -
Nutritionist thinks I should be eation 1000 cals a day!
FluffyChix replied to Briswife15's topic in Food and Nutrition
My doctor told me pre-op that I needed to be eating around 1500cals, so my body would get the advantage of a sudden drop in calories after the surgery. Make sure you are getting enough cals/nutrition in right now so that you do lose weight, but aren't starving or the surgery might not be as effective. You want your metabolism amped up still. Here's a good link to healthy low glycemic selections of all kinds of food (scroll down to see fruits, fats, meats, etc): https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/keto/vegetables -
I totally get that, that's actually how i feel. Keto is fun because i basically eat crap and still lose weight, but i prefer the other low carb way of life, it's less restrictive. And somedays i just crave things like protein packed fruit smoothies and keto doesn't allow for things like that, or spaghetti squash dishes.

2 Years Post OP and struggling

Thank you Steve! I think you're right. I know what I have to do, I just need to get my a$$ in gear and do it. I'm going to try the pouch reset thing first to get my head back in that mindset and then move onto keto from there. Good luck on your journey! It seems like you're already doing great!! -
Am I the ONLY one who wasn’t given a diet plan?? I was given a rough caloric intake count and that’s IT. I’m still stuck at 145- but yes I eat mostly anything I want in tiny amounts- except alcohol of course. I always thought people gained weight from alcohol or maybe over stuffing them self? After gastric bypass- so far, there’s no way of eating enough to gain more than 1 lb of water weight... I know this can change in 5 years?? Also- to break plateau I was thinking of All liquid protein and some chicken and lettuce? I cannot go without all sugars and carbs... it makes me crazy ... however I do eat sugar from berries. Now sure what else to try. I can’t digest most animal meats still- so anything Keto just won’t work... too much cheese won’t work either. Too bad people have to be so mean to each other and take things with such a heavy heart... 🤷🏻♀️😐💜💜💜

I was on a keto-diet with 30-40g of carbs per day. One symptom or side effect of ketosis is vertigo or dizziness, but just like with any medication, not everyone will experience all symptoms. I agree that OP may be having BP issues they may want to have checked.

I've been doing keto for the last couple of months. Up until this week I wasn't sure if my revision to a sleeve would pan out so I needed to really dig in and better my lifestyle. I love it, and plan on keeping it up once I'm sleeved (but I think it'll be slightly easier) my biggest hurdle as it is, is finding lapband friendly AND keto friendly foods. But I'm down 24 lbs so far. I also add the keto OS drinks. That adds ketones to your body and helps a TON Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
