Post op.... Taste in my mouth... Its it normal?
Lou51 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am a week post op. Since surgery I have had such a gross taste in my mouth. I thought it was taking orally dissolvable medication. Then I tight it was the lack of food variety? I have been brushing my teeth, flossing, using a tongue scraper (my tongue has been very coated). It isn't oral thrush, I've checked. My breath is rank. Is this normal? Will it improve? Please tell me it will as my food intake returns to normal 🙏 -
Had bypass on 10 November. Pain days have been off and on since then. One more week until puree stage. Can't wait. Also can't wait to start getting some of the awesome stuff I have seen here.

2 week post op appointment My last weight prior surgery was 168. That was my weight at the last appointment prior to surgery which was a week before, so it may have been a little more. I say more because I did not do a pre- op diet…at all. I ate all the things up until the day before surgery. I did a liquid diet for 24 hours the day before surgery. Starting weight: 168 pounds height: 5 foot (imma meatball) Self pay, BMI 33.2 2 week post op: 152.8 pounds down: 15 pounds When I told my surgeon that I haven’t met (or even have come close to) meeting protein goals, and I haven’t drank a single protein shake. He said “don’t worry about the protein, I don’t really want you drinking protein shakes”. UMMM what?!? I mean, weight lifted because I’m not doing it anyways. He was pleased that I’m staying hydrated with just water, and that I am eating 2oz at a time. I told him I having cravings, and he said have one bite and be done with it. He also told me to start eating fruit. Music to my ears. I feel a lot less stressed about it all. He doesn’t seem super strict, which I don’t know if it’s case by case. Being that i started at a low obese BMI, maybe that has something to Do with it. He also said my hunger is likely to decrease over the next few weeks. Enough appointment talk. Back to what’s going on with me post op day 15. I’ve been able to take a mouthful of water and swallow 3-4 times in a row. Still pretty small sips, but I’m no longer using a med cup (haven’t for while) or waiting minutes between. I am having a hard time slowing down with my meals too. I’m definitely not taking 20 minutes. I find my found myself eating 3 small bites rather quickly, then taking it slower after that. My vitamins have become a 10 minute ordeal of me almost throwing up. Like my mouth will water like I’m about to puke. I just try really hard not to. My energy level is pretty good. Considering no caffeine and little protein. For breakfast I had 1.5oz canned chicken and 0.5 oz banana) For lunch I had canned Annie’s vegan chili (1oz) and 1oz smashed potatoes, pinch of shredded cheese. It was yum! feeling good!

Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
ms.sss replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oh that wasn’t my first drinking with a post-wls bod. im 3 years out now and drink quite regularly (bring on the concerned comments, I’m ready!) my fIrst attempt at alcohol was 3-4 weeks post. I had maybe two sips of red wine and it slightly burned a little and I swear I could feel it travel down my intestines. With so little drank, it had no effect on me. second attempt was closer to 2 months post had a few sips of a sugary soju drink and I had a several hour long dumping episode. Not pretty. I probably had 5 or so PARTIAL drinks my ENTIRE weight loss phase. It got me tipsy quickly even with small amounts of less than 1/3 a drink, and I could tell I wouldn’t be able to drive….but I also sobered up really quickly. fast forward to now and i can drink maybe 2 drinks in succession (like in under an hour) and be pretty toasted…if I nurse the drinks over a period of time I can keep from getting too drunk. And I still sober up really quick. oh and I mostly stay away from sugary mixers if I can help it… -
Irregular period
Mrs.ChristyFares replied to beme2013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello hoping to get help. I am 8mos post RNY and my period is over a week late. I was irregular the first few months but the last 5 have been on point as usual. Took hpt today and it's negative so 🤷 Did anyone else experience changes in AF this late in the process?? Shared experience welcome 😊 -
Sometimes it takes eating MORE to break a stall. Stalls occur for a couple of reasons: 1) to let your body catch up, and 2) because your metabolism is in starvation mode. If you eat MORE it may trigger your metabolism to speed up since it's no longer in starvation mode. It's counter-intuitive to eat MORE, but it frequently works. Perhaps you could eat 1100-1200 calories a day and see what happens.

Tips for not obsessing about food
Sunnyway replied to doobie31's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
If you are a sugar/food addict you will have cravings. Once you obtain from your trigger foods, the craving will pass after a withdrawal period that lasts only a week or two. If you eat even a small qualtity of sugar, flour, rice, potatoes, or processed foods the cravings will probably return and you'll have to go through withdrawal all over again. It gets much easier if you are abstaining. If you don't know if you are a sugar/food addict (or if you suspect you are), I recommend the following books: -
Almost 3 weeks out. Am I doing something wrong?
AjaSlimtone replied to Prisci1608's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Weeks 3-6 are common stall weeks. If you're still stalled after that, then look at switching things up. -
Activity Success!! Running with the kids!
njlimmer posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Every year our boys' PE hosts a Turkey Run and invites staff to run the mile. Never have I EVER even thought about walking it. Too embarrassed about how I looked, what would jiggle, how long it would take me, that I'd be huffing and puffing... you know all the reasons why. Today, I RAN with them. RAN!! Some of them were still faster, but I had to giggle at all the stragglers who would all of sudden find the energy to run when their librarian was coming up behind them! We were supposed to do 4 laps. I ran 6 and walked 2. So proud of myself. I never, ever thought I'd be a runner. EVER. I started a Couch to 5K app in July, and now I can run 40 consecutive minutes! I'm running 2.5 miles 3 days a week, and I'm signed up to run a 5k in February with the school's team. -
Anyone with a traveling job?
Losefly replied to lizonaplane's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I travel at least a week a month. Will typically buy yogurt and hard boiled eggs for breakfasts as well as a case of water to keep in my hotel room. I will typically go to a Whole Foods or Sprouts and grab something for lunch, shredded chicken, salad with chicken, or other protein option I can find. I do lots of business dinners and have had great success just talking to the waiter/waitress about what I can eat and find most very accommodating. You just have to get comfortable with speaking up. -
I’m so over protein shakes
Losefly replied to j McFadden22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried avoiding protein shakes all together? My surgeon doesn’t allow them. They want their patients getting protein from real food. I thought that was odd when I first heard about but after doing this for three months, it totally makes sense now. -
How much weight did you lose in the first 3 months?
Losefly replied to ac0181's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Couldn’t agree more with all the advice above. The goal is a future healthy life style. The first weeks weight loss is not a predictor of that. It’s hard in the first month or so to see the light, but if you work the process you’re going to succeed. We all seem to use the scale to measure success so I get it. I did the same thing and did experience the three week post op stall. I too was frustrated and concerned, but I held steady, it passed and I continued to see success. I’m three months out and have surpassed my original expectations. -
Hello everyone! So my surgery is scheduled for 11/24 a week away! I am now on the clear liquid diet. I am struggling, especially when husband has to cook and eat something. I try not to let him know it bothers me. I usually go in the office or bedroom to get away from smell. How do yall get past this?? Any suggestions?? Stacy

I've not done this, but I do know Contrave affects cravings and reduces hunger. Given you are already only eating 800-1000 calories a day, I would question why this is even needed. Have you consulted with the nutritionists at your practice? Every place is different, but at mine, they expect me to be at 1200 calories at 6 months, maybe more if I am exercising seriously 5-6 times a week. Have you tried increasing your calories to see if that would help?

I am 6 months post op from sleeve surgery. I've lost 73 pounds from my highest weight, but only 58 pounds since surgery. I'm eating 800-1000 calories a day, getting my protein and liquids, taking all my vitamins and exercising 5 or 6 days a week. The weight loss has stalled over the last 2 months, and I am so frustrated. I feel great physically, but am discouraged and disappointed. My primary care doctor spoke to me yesterday about trying Contrave. Have any of you tried it after surgery? What was your experience?

I hit 299 lbs this morning after being stalled for 3 months. My body really didn't want to go below 300. I'm down over 110 lbs since surgery and still have a lot more to go but my doctor said my progress is normal and apparently I'm just more of a slow and steady loser so this should continue. Overall feeling great!

Hey lovely, I went to my doctor and asked them for WLS through the NHS and they were marvellous. There was no shame, embarrassment or judgement and he made me feel so comfortable and at ease throughout the appointment. And in my opinion, that’s the hardest bit. Taking the courage to ask and enquire. Once that’s over, you’re good to go 😄 I’m 16 weeks post op now and I feel amazing! Feel free to hit me up for any more info or support xx

I’m a December bypass patient! December 17th pre-op evaluation December 29th surgery date and January 3rd is my 1 week review I’m excited and getting ready for my new lifestyle. Came here to get some supplements and connect with folks who understand the excitement I am feeling. Also the anxiousness and feelings of not being ready quite yet for what I need to get before going into the hospital.

I’m on day 10 post op. I had the sleeve too and I got the hunger feeling started yesterday but I noticed I didn’t have enough protein intake. I guess I have a mindset of 40-48g of protein but my dietitian advised me today that I can take more proteins. I was counting the bone broth as my protein intake which made me hungry a bit although I’m using the Paleo/Keto friendly broth with 10g of protein. I changed it today and I’m not hungry. Can’t wait for the soft/puréed stage next week. I started watching videos on YouTube and it’s interesting and I found them helpful for our next stage.

Did your doctor not give you a diet to follow? You really should be eating bland, liquid food right now. 9 weeks post op, there is really nothing at Christmas you should be eating other than mashed potatoes and some sugar free jello. Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Some plans provide caloric goal, others portion size & some a combination of both. Mine was just portion size (1/4 cup to begin increasing to less than a cup at 6 months & goal) & low carb, low fat, low sugar & high protein. There were days all I ate was protein & nothing else to begin. I slowly added vegetables to one meal a day (about a tablespoon) & gradually increased the amount & added some fresh fruit as the weeks & months passed. In maintenance, I’m still careful about portion size, keep an eye on my calories, avoid processed foods & keep to lowish fats, lowish carbs (only complex whole & multi grain carbs) & low sugar. As most have said above, it is always best to follow your plan unless you can’t & then work out an alternative plan with your dietician. Also ask them for more direction & recommendations around calories, nutritional advice, etc. It’s important you feel comfortable & confident about your eating plan.
-
Exactly. In maintenance you discover what works for you & allows you to continue to maintain your weight & if that includes the occasional snack that’s fine. I keep macadamia nuts, roasted fava beans & nut squares in my cupboard - lowish fat, lowish carbs, about 100 calories & 3-7g protein. Mainly to have on hand if friends drop by for a drink or cup of tea but I do sometimes have a nibble. Fava beans last week, nuts a couple of weeks ago, nut squares … can’t remember.

Hello All! I wanted to let you all know that I was hospitalized Friday 11/12 until late afternoon Saturday 11/13. I ended up in the ER early morning on Friday 11/12 with severe pain. All kinds of tests and a CT scan were done. The test results confirmed I’m diagnosed with Rectus Sheath Hematoma. (Rectus sheath hematomas result from bleeding inside the vascular rectus muscle layer of the abdominal wall.) My doctors say I will be in this pain anywhere from 2 to possibly 4 weeks. Tylenol and Tramadol are the medications to manage pain. I have to wear a binder and use a heating pad to help soothe the pain. Bed rest is all I can do right now. I can’t even stand for know more the 5 minutes at a time. My doctor said it’s a very tough setback and recovery to have rectus sheath hematoma cause of severity of the pain.
