Stomach Discoloration After Surgery
rainbowsfollowme posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had lapband surgery on 6/4/2010. After surgery I had some bruising which was normal and expected. However 6 weeks after surgery I still had discoloration on my stomach. This discoloration is just slightly darker than my natural skin color - almost resembling a birth mark. I asked the Doctor and he said it was probably just bruising under my skin and it would go away. I doubted it was bruising but trusted the Doctor. Now I am 9 weeks post op and the discoloration is still there - it hasn't changed a bit. I'm wondering it anyone else has experience or heard of this?? -
Yeah, I am the same way. If I keep my carbs too low, I stall out for a bit. If I keep them 30g to 40g everything is pretty smooth. Everyone's body is different.

Banded 05/01/09, conceived 05/31/09
eejaydiva replied to tmbennett8's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I don't know that you should have been TTC that close to surgery, but what's done is done. This may bum you out a bit, but the general consensus is that NO WEIGHT LOSS can occur during pregnancy. Even in the grossly obese, my OBGYN said that doctors strictly tell patients not to attempt or pursue weight loss. Maintaining weight is usually ok, or only gaining a little, but your plans to lose may have to be on hold for 40 weeks or so... Depending on how hormones and a growing baby put pressure on your band, you may get a complete unfill. I kept my entire fill and have about 4 wks to go, I've had a few sliming and vomiting episodes here and there on my tighter days, but mostly I feel great. However I have gained weight, I'd say 25-30 lbs by now...so that sucks, but I'll live. Good luck and try to keep your fill, just don't diet. Weight and cholesterol drops during the early weeks of pregnancy are linked to spina bifida and a higher rate of childhood cancers. -
Is anyone struggling with family members. I am struggling with family watching me eat and making comments. Saying things like: "Should you be eating that?", "Aren't you supposed to eat the protein first?", "Wow can you have that?", "That is just a poor choice.", and my personal favorite, "If you eat like that you will gain 10 pounds before your first fill!" I was banded on 6/19. I lost 30# pre-op and 15# post. I have lost 8.5 inches post-op. I am supposed to have my first fill next week. I know that my family loves me, but how do you get them to realize you are the one in control. In a nice way. I wouldn't hurt them for the world and I know that they are just worried and concerned, but I need some breathing room. Just wondering if anyone else has been through this and did it go away as you progressed. I am hoping that when my family sees how well I am doing and that I am succeeding they will back off. Comments....Questions....

Yes I was unfilled all the way. I had 2.5cc in a 5cc band. As soon as some was released (didn't release all of it on the first visit) all my pain went away. I am now back of to 2cc, but my docotor has been giving me .5cc fills every week. I am at a good spot - would like to be a little tighter, but I know the problems would come again. I have had just a couple of times having the burning pains, and last night had the pain each time I swallowed something. Today I am fine, but will wait a week to see if it continues or if it is just because I am on my monthly. I get tighter around this time.

Well, I weighed this am and I am down 20 lbs. WOOOOOO HOOOOO. Only 45 more to go!!!!!. I was banded 7 weeks ago. I feel better than I have in LONG time. I know I look better too. Had a follow up dr apt yesterday and he said I was doing great. I am scheduled to get another fill on Tuesday. I think I will go buy myself a new pair of shoes or a new purse for hitting my mileston. What did yall do when you hit milestones?

Cramps/Spasms in Stomach
SerendipityHappens replied to msnolan71's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not gas... gas is an entirely DIFFERENT pain. My doctor said yes, spasms are quite normal for the first week or so. I would actually get them more frequently when I waked and especially when I'd drink something cold.. Of course I had to walk anyway, but the spasms would stop me dead in my tracks the first few days but they grew less intense and less frequent as time went by. Good luck! -
@@Dancing Fool Great job! I was down 9 lbs (their scale) from my two week post op check, 14 total. I did get a 1 cc fill yesterday and feel good. Keep up the good work????

Post Op Exercise
Ms Lady in NC replied to MsDownToMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started the day after surgery. My coordinator Laurie was surprised to hear of me walking stairs and all the floors the next morn after surgery so after my leak test and a few hours of rest at the hotel, we hit the streets LITERALLY. We walked up and down the streets of Tijuana for a good 8 hours enjoying all the festivities and culture. Then a few days later at home I used my treadmill at home until that got boring and I went back to my gym where I have been since I was 2 weeks post-op. I mainly used the treadmill and bikes for a few weeks then went on to light weights and the dreadful stairmaster to finally back into my fav...boxing. I was told to basically do a little at a time to work your way back to where you once were and in a few weeks I was. It really all depends on you and your body. Pushing yourself before time will not get you to your goal any quicker so just remember to do what your doctor says. Good Luck! -
It took me a total of 4 weeks to really start feeling like myself again. I still have to pay attention to my body because when it tells me I need to rest, it means NOW Give yourself time and be kind to yourself.

Hi.... I was banded a year ago and have done really well...I was within 3 pounds of goal when I got the stomach flu. I was really vomiting and went in to get unfilled (my band is tilted slightly, although not slipped. This was found via a CT scan). I had 4cc taken out, which brought me to 3cc, basically my first fill. This was done 2 weeks ago. Since then, I have gained almost 14 pounds. What is going on??? Can I eat more? Yes, but not nearly what I would have eaten. Plus, I am still being good regarding the rules. It seems to me that if I go over 5-600 calories per day I am gaining. I don't understand this. It is so frustrating!! Can someone help explain this to me?

What questions to ask during pre-op appt?
Malin replied to GoingRogue's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@ShelterDog64 It went very well! I asked some of the questions you had suggested, and I feel even more at ease with my decision. (I was catheterized several times as a child, it still freaks me out! now I know that this surgery is so quick, I won't have to have one!). I've had to move my surgery back one week for multiple reasons, but I'm so ready to do this! -
He's probably worried about you and doesn't understand what it's like to be morbidly obese so my guess is he views this as unnecessary elective surgery and too extreme for your circumstances. It's understandable if you've never had a weight problem. I'd frame it to him as being worried about your health, feeling like your weight is out of your control, and wanting to make a positive change so you can do more things with your family and have more energy. Take him with you to your orientation so he can learn more about it. Having three kids he's probably worried if something were to happen to you over what he believes may just be a cosmetic and easily fixed problem. Surgery is scary. But there is plenty of proof that you'd live a longer, healthier life at a lower weight and surgery is the most effective treatment of morbid obesity. Why are you worried about your relationship after losing weight? I've told my partner that things will be better because I'll have more energy to do stuff with her and our son. I'll be able to keep up and play sports better, hike faster, won't be as afraid of flying out of a Water slide (it's a legit fear when you're very heavy and the inertia from your weight catapults you faster than you'd expect), will fit in roller coasters better... I eat less so she gets more of my food if she wants it. I share my food with our son because I can't eat it all. I used to be really grumpy about sharing my favorite foods (fat girl problems) but now I'm not at all because I get full easily. It's a weird benefit but there you go. If you make it sound like he's going to benefit from having a lighter weight spouse he may hop on board with your plan more readily just make sure he knows you take doctor's orders seriously and that you're going to take care of yourself and make sure you're prepared so the surgery is as safe as possible.

4 wks post surgery, gaining weight and panicking
kimba6999 replied to Happygoomom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello and sorry to hear your troubles. I am just about 6 months post and i have had a couple of stalls during my journey. You mentioned you r havinf problems getting in ur protein? From experience i can tell you that not getting in ur minimum could be causing the problem. It is very important to get in your Proteins. I know you are still newly starting but do what it taoes to get in ur protein. I eat 800-900 cal a day on avg and i eat 80-100g of protein a day so it is possible. Just choose food high in protein, low in fat and low in sugar. I do not count carbs but thats because i dont eat things carb related. I eat whole foods, i occassionally eat a slice of bread but whole wheat or have mashed potatoes but homemade no box. So my carbs are healthy carbs. You will have stalls, its part of losing weight in any form. Just dont get discouraged. My NUT told me that your body will acclimate so you need to change things up every 4-6 wks. So i change up my exercise routine and my eating plan so my body no longer has time to adjust. Gotta keep her guessing! This was not a waste for you. Just eat high protein and get at least 64oz of Water and get in exercise daily. Once you can start really working out get yourself a good routine and as a suggestion for exercise, do your research! I warm up and the do strength training and then my cardio. You will burn alot more calories and for a much longer period. I feel being well informed on this journey is the key to success. Just stay positive and tell that doctor to take a hike. My surgeon is one of the leading surgeons on gastric surgery. His team has done some of the most ground breaking surgeries in thi field. I have had the greatest success with the team here. They are here for every worry and question i can think of and kindly help. I also agree with a previous post about a support group. It will really help you to find one around you. You need the support especially early on when you have so many questions. I hope this encourages you. If you have the time just do some research. Remember to stick to high protein, chicken, turkey, fish, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, whey protein isolates, and more. Good luck and if you need help or have questions and i can be of service plz feel free to ask. I will help if i can. Btw, i started at 356 and am now 252. Down 104 in just under 6 months, so doing what ur supposed to does work. Let me know how your doing in the time ahead. -
Swimming after surgery
LindafromFlorida replied to val326's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask your surgeon. We could take a shower in a few days so you might be able to get in the pool sooner, without swimming. I can see where strenuous swimming could hurt. I lifted a laundry basket 3 weeks after surgery and had to rest in bed 24 hours with discomfort. We would have been swimming in our pool but it was Nov/Dec for our surgery. We swim every day since March. Might be different if it is a community pool. -
I have heard 6 weeks but some on here were able to swim in 4 weeks. Your incision should be healed completely before you swim.

3 Months out....however
Kathy812 replied to Darkplaces's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I had pain on my left side that started as I approached the three month mark. When I went for my three month follow-up, I mentioned it to the nurse practitioner who said it was common and that it would subside soon. She was right, I haven't had the pain in about two weeks. I never experienced any shoulder pain. I still think to play it safe, call your doctor. Best wishes. -

Pre-op appointment on Wednesday

Argh! Too bad your date isn't April 6th! That's my birthday Happy early birthday though!! Is your diet 2 weeks? It's tough, but doable. I had a couple of breakdowns. But so happy to report that I have survived it. Lol Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App -
I would contact your surgeon. I was off pain meds as soon as I left the hospital and returned to work 1 week later. I had some sharp pains between incision points but it went away relatively quickly (within 2-3 days after I spoke with my surgeon)

I think the protein goals are unrealistic for the first couple of weeks. Based on what I've seen on this forum, I think most people are unable to meet their protein goals in the beginning. It should get easier, so just do the best you can for now and don't worry too much. The most important thing is to get enough fluids so you don't get dehydrated.

Can't eat or drink
samanthazzz replied to lapband0505's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
FYI Some fills do not kick in immediately. My first fill didn't kick in till 2 weeks and my second 11 days after being filled. I was like" What the heck is happening?". I had no clue it could work like that. I was telling a friend " I have no restriction" day after day and then blam, I was stuck on something that I had been able to eat previously. My 3rd fill kicked in 2 days and I cancelled my 4th fill appt. because I am tight enough. Listen to your body. It's a tricky slope we walk when it comes to fills. Drink, drink, drink....that is my best hint. Lots of folks cannot eat in the mornings (I am one of them), band is too tight. I have lots of hot tea to loosen the band and then can only eat mushier types of food during the afternoon. I can eat more as the day progresses. DR said the band can tighten while we sleep because we are not drinking. Maybe you are trying to eat when your not able to. See if this helps for a few days. If all else fails, get an unfill. Our bodies are constantly in flux, what with the wt. loss, life's stresses, TOM, illness etc . What may have worked for you last week, may not work today. Good luck to you on your journey! -
Weighing after surgery
laylasmojo replied to kgremmy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my Dr weighs me everytime I come in and I see him at one week one month then every three months. But I go by the eight I have at home since it is at the same time every time and I can be in my b-day suit no cloths adding extra weight. I weigh every day just because I find it interesting the corilation to what I did/ ate the day before to the amount lost or gained, but I only track on Wednesdays. But some people just cant handle the every day weigh in it drives them crazy. for me not knowing would drive me crazy. -
