  1. Hey all, I'm back because I've developed severe GERD, esophagitis and a large hiatal hernia. I had an endoscopy this past Tuesday and they found my hiatal hernia was classified as large, several superficial ulcers, severe reflux/GERD. The esophagram I had a few weeks ago showed esophageal spasms and the results of the endoscopy indicate the spasms are due to the acid reflux. I frequently throw up my food due to the coughing triggered by the spasms. Fun times I tell ya! I saw my surgeon Wednesday and I was already thinking about hiatal hernia repair and asking about if she could do the RNY conversion at the same time. Well, she brought that up before I could. She gave me a few options and the repair and conversion is what I felt most comfortable with. She's having her prior authorization person working on the insurance part. I should hear something before Christmas. We're looking at a possible date of early to mid-January.
  2. Messaged you 😊 Food grief is real. I had it for the first 3 days. I was angry. Normally I would run to blow off steam but there’s no way I can this week, I’d never be able to fuel or recover. The commercials don’t really bother me and cooking for my family doesn’t bother me too much. They did eat a pizza last night and man did I want some! I resisted but I did think about licking a breadstick 😂
  3. I ordered the Syntrax unflavored (for oatmeal, soups, etc.) and also lemonade flavor (for everyday fluids). It had good reviews, and I’m hopeful that the lemonade flavor tastes similar to Crystal Light. At the very least, it looks like the least expensive high quality product. I’ll post again on flavor in a few weeks. 😀
  4. I did drink half a protein shake this morning but it made me nauseous, don’t really know what that means. I’m hoping my stomach will be okay once I do start putting things other than clear liquid in. I can’t stomach broth or jello anymore. I don’t actually get to have a protein shake until week 2 post op. 😐
  5. That scenario worries me as does the fact that bari vitamins have also been up and down $12 per bottle in the last few weeks. I can see those going to $100 or more.

    Overwhelmed

The Dr visits are tough and it wore me out. Now I am just over 2 weeks away, The last 30 days is flying by so far. I just want it done before I freak out and change my mind lol

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I was moved to soft foods this week, and I just put in my grocery order with things like lump crab meat and lean deli meats and cheese to make roll ups- I can’t wait! I had a Turkey meatball and low sugar sauce that I made with a spoon of low fat ricotta and I felt like I was getting closer to normal! does anyone else’s clinic count weight lost from the first day of the liquid diet? I’m not sure if that’s weird or not

    Exercises

your butt shape will change after all the weight loss. Mine was pretty saggy - but I had a lower body lift which tightened it up. Usually lower body exercises like squats and lunges will help with glutes - but again, your shape will change pretty fast, and there's not a lot you can do to help the sagginess with the amount of weight we typically lose. immediately after surgery, all I was cleared for was walking. After four weeks, I was allowed to do everything except for weights. At eight weeks out, I was cleared for weights. The first few months I did mostly water fitness classes - and walking. I also did the stationary bikes at my gym. Now I do dance cardio (like Zumba) and biking, but I was too heavy to do those when I first started on my journey.

    January Surgery buddies

I'm planning to come back to work 1 week post-op (office job) but it'll depend on my recovery.

    Reactive Hypoglycemia

I am trying to control my with diet. My low yesterday was 48. Today I am running at 180 and not sure what do do about that. I ate super healthy all week and yesterday had a latte that dropped me in 2 hours after drinking it.

    January Surgery buddies

I am a texture person myself so I understand. I am taking off the whole 4 weeks. I feel like if you are able to, give your self that time to adjust and prepare. You have the rest of your life to work. This is not only a big adjustment physically for most of us it is also going to be a mental adjustment. I have already completed my FMLA paperwork and short term disability for my 4 weeks off. I am going to try and make the best of it my job will be there. If they would give me more time off I would take it 😂

Day 10 of my new life

I loathe taking my vitamins. I’m a month out. I’ve found if I eat a couple spoon fulls of sugar free pudding right after i swallow, it helps weigh it down. After I have the pills in my mouth and the water, i lean my head back dramatically and tap on my throat to center the pills…. I’m sure I look REAL crazy. I also stand there a while convincing myself not to to throw up and I sorta pat my belly to get burps out, hahahaha. This is everyday, every time. I couldn’t stomach the bariatric advantage chew or calcium chews. So now I’m taking a centrum womens and a target brand calcium that I can swallow. I have an iron I’m to take every other day. A sublingual b-12 once a week. And a high dose thiamin every day, because I was deficient.

    Help… I cheated on Pre-op diet TWICE!

Yes I did cheat on my Pre-Op diet but mine was 2 weeks long so it somehow didn't hurt me as much. With your 1 week long pre-Op diet, I would suggest you speak to your nurse and make sure not to cheat again. Or ask them to give you a 2 weeks pre-Op diet that many of us go through and manage with some ups and downs in the beginning. I hope it works out for you. 😊

    Itchy Incisions

I'm just shy of three months post-op, and the incisions still itch like crazy.

Day 10 of my new life

I'm sorry you've had a rocky start, Summerseeker, and hope you're on a upward trajectory now. My instinct would be to stay on the liquids for that second week, purely because your start was so rough. Give your system the gentlest easing into the pureed stage. Are you able to take your medicine and vitamins now that the foamies have subsided?
  16. My first 9 days post surgery were quite traumatising. I was not ready for the sleep depravation and symptoms of a swelling in my new stomach. I had constant foamies, all day and night for 9 days. I was honking foam like a over powdered washing machine. I have been unable to take my medicines and vitamins In a fashion all I have managed to eat/ drink is squash, broth and coffee [ I am allowed] Day 10 arrives and I feel better. I tried some well pureed ramen broth with chicken and vegetables and later that day a banana milkshake with peanut butter added. I am allowed to drink milk instead of protein shakes, just adding extra dried milk powder and to it. Protein shakes are expensive in the Uk and unless I have to I will stay on milk. I need to work on getting a breakfast into my regime. At the moment it may be another milkshake but its getting my liquid content up too. I feel like I am a week behind my peers. So I will do a week of these liquids before moving to the next staging post. I have no hunger and get full signals on so little liquid, About 4 oz. Should I continue with the soup/ milkshake at a later time ? Or call it eating over Any help gratefully received

Generally the average daily recommended amount of sugar an adult woman should consume each day is 24g but we should be consuming a less while losing. Check with your nutritionalist as to what she requires as plans are different. I wasn’t given a specific maximum amount not to exceed. Some protein shakes have a lot of sugar so you’ll have to shop around to find the ones you like with the lowest sugar content. I only had to have shakes for the first two weeks post surgery. I wasn’t overly worried about sugar (or fat or carbs) those first two weeks but then I wasn’t eating much anyway -<300 calories. I only had one a day & a serve of soup/broth so not a big issue really. Once I stared purées I was very vigilant. But again check with your nutritionalist about this. While losing I only ate meat, dairy, vegetables & fruit so the only sugar I had was in yoghurt & the naturally occurring sugar in milk & fruit. I still keep my sugar low & continue to avoid things with added sugar, articulate sweeteners or sugar alternatives as much as I can. But that’s my choice now. You’ll discover that everyday you’ll decide what you’ll eat based upon the food’s nutrient value. Checking the sugar, fats, carbs, protein content & keeping a running total of how much you’re eating as the day progresses becomes a daily part of your life & will influence your food choices throughout the day. Reach your maximum sugar in the morning then avoid it for the rest of the day. Oh, and while dumping is uncommon with gastric sleeve it can happen & sugar is often the cause. So tread carefully. All the best.
  18. I had my surgery about five years ago and maintained a loss of about 50 pounds after that, far short of my goal. I'm also diabetic, so was put on Ozempic for that about six or seven months ago and have experienced the appetite suppressant effects of that, very useful. So I started losing quite slowly with that, and then, on the advice of the psychologist my diabetes doctor recommended, I signed up for Noom about a month ago. I was very skeptical but I am kind of a convert now, as I've lost another ten pounds or so with it. It's on my phone and while there are psychologically-based lessons and support groups to post to, what I find most useful are the daily weigh-ins and food tracking (on some phones it will also track your steps, but my knees are shot and walking is not my thing--I swim for exercise, just not enough). You enter what you eat and the program keeps track of the (estimated) calories; I have a 1200-calorie daily limit. The program is very supportive and recognizes that this isn't a straight-line process. We do better some days than others. But I'll admit that I think twice about eating something caloric when I'm at or near (or over!) my daily limit. I'll add that a side effect of the Ozempic I'm on is that on the day I take it and the day after (it's a once-a-week shot), I've learned to be very, very careful about what I eat. The side effects if I have something carby are not pleasant, let me just say without further details!

    Post op day 4 vomiting

Sorry to hear this. According to my nutritionist, vomiting is not normal. Was there something that precipitated it? Circumstances? I had vomiting for weeks and could try to help. Call your doctor’s exchange if after hours. GL!
  20. @MsTina1984 - Hi surgery buddy! At least we know we’re not alone on the struggle bus. I hope your surgery goes smoothly. @smanky - I couldn’t imagine doing this for more than a week, there’s no way I’d get through on so little food. I’m a runner and it’s killing my mental health not to be running this week. I’m glad to hear that this is the hardest part. It really is only 3 more days. I really just was looking for reassurance that this was the difficult bit. Thank you.
  21. Your pre-op diet definitely sounds stricter than most, but at least it's only for a week. A week of hell, but still only a week (mine was two weeks, some go for three or even four!). It may be a similar diet to the milk diet some are put on? Basically a starvation diet to shrink the liver. I'm sorry it's such a tough one for you! The pre-op diet is 100% the HARDEST part of the WLS journey, and no one has a good time doing it. Just remember: It's not forever! You've got 3 days to go. Find something, anything to distract yourself and keep your water up!

    This surgery is bullshit...

Pay attention to the measurements not the scale. Also switch up on what you eat to trick your body out of the stall but with healthy stuff

Anyone else struggling with panic post-op?

Post-Op racing heart can also be dehydration. Dehydration reduces your blood pressure and shoots up your heart rate. So have to make sure to take sufficient fluids. That's my only concern first week. Other than that, I am taking it a day at a time and hoping things fall in place. But definitely there may be multiple concerns each of us may have down our journey. Just have to make sure not to go into any negative mindset because what is done is already done. Surgery is over and you can't undo. So make the best of what you can and focus on your end goal. 😊

I hate that I had this surgery

i was the same, I am now nearly 5 months out and finally feeling so much better( I got that bad I was put in hospital on suicide watch) then sent 6 weeks on my sisters couch. It gets better I didnt believe it when people would tell me that but it doe. your hormones are most likely going haywire ATM too. given the choice again knowing what i know now would i do it again probably not but we cant turn back time but in saying that i would still be over 100kg instead of 77kg. I still have bad moments/days but it does get better. P.S. I too am wondering about the OP hope she is doing ok
