Two Things. Gas After Eating? Stability Of Band And Port?
MissManders posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tomorrow is one week post op for me. Over the past few days I've noticed that after I put anything in my stomach, whether it be a Protein shake or applesauce or yogurt, I end up getting gas. Sometimes it's just a minor annoyance, but sometimes it is gas pain and makes me feel....not nauseated, but definitely not a happy camper. Is this something I should worry about, or is it normal? Also, how stable is the band and the port. I've been keeping mild activity, such as walking, and doing my best not to stretch and pop my back, but I've had a couple of coughing spells and sneezed a few times, and I'm worry about things moving or slipping in there. Am I just being overly paranoid? -
The Smoothie and Protein Drink Debate
BladeFox replied to 7 Bites_Jen's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
I see no problem in continuing the Protein shakes actually for life. Sometimes it comes in handy when you are running all day and just haven't done a good job at getting your protein in. I am 4 months out and my must haves at home are Jay Robb whey protein (chocolate), soy milk, cocoa powder, skinny girls stevia, cottage cheese, greek yogurt and babybel cheese in those rare cases when I know I didn't get my protein in for the day. Plus, instead of eating something before and after a workout, it sometimes feels good to drink a Protein shake. Cool and refreshing. -
How long does everyone stay full?
topazz replied to Niki1617's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also feel hunger after 2.5 hours. I usually take a protein shake, yogurt, cottage cheese and fruit or cheese stick if I get hungry. I only have 2 cc's right now. I go for another fill on tues, so I am hoping to see a difference. -
26 days since surgery and bored with my food options

Sorry to hear about the extended puree diet. Use some gravies with your meats in the blender. I found just chewing about 30 to 50 times pretty much purees anything naturally. Try different meats like italian sausage in the blender with some tomato sauce. Try an oldie, Deviled Ham and Deviled chicken. Steam vegetables until real soft Bananas soft scrambled eggs poached eggs Cottage cheese Greek Yogurt (higher in protein) than normal yogurt Mixture of Ricotta Cheese, tomato sauce and hamburger Just go up and down all the aisles of the grocery store you will find more stuff -
I made Greek yogurt, banana and a little peanut butter drink. So good!! How often can I sip on it. I really don't want to over do it. Thanks

1st time throwing up liquids- why???
Just Banded posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Could I have aggrevated my esophogas and stomach from my pbing yesterday? I cannot tell if I actually have post nasal drip or am just feeling this way from the pb. Anyhow, managed to drink 18 oz. of tea this morning sipping from 7:30 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. wasn't hungry until about 12:00 p.m. and tried one spoonful of yogurt that caused major gurgling, so I waited until 2:00 p.m. to have the broth from wonton Soup and just the broth, which I could only take in 1/2 cup without feeling intense gurgling. I have tried sipping on some green ice tea over the past hour and recently it just all came up. Just pure liquid... I am worried about dehydration even though I feel fine now. I am also worried about what to do since the dr. office is closed. Anyone have any advice to get me thru the night?????? This has never happened to me. I heard that slips would cause major pain and I don't feel anything but gurglly bubbles moving in my esophagus. -
26 days since surgery and bored with my food options

CoffeeBean, Thanks for replying. Yes I can have yogurt but I haven't tried refried beans or split pea soup. I honestly hate soup but I will try some blended Soups with meat to see how that goes. As I think about it corned beef hash is pretty mushy and I like that so I will see the how the texture of that works tomorrow for me as well. -

Back Pain And Find A New Doctor In Los Angeles County
ddrag posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All, I was banded July 7, 2010. I have lost 75. Been stuck at this weight loss for at least 6 mos. I just can't seem to hit the 80 pound loss mark. Last week I started getting sharp pains in the middle of my back when any liquid or food is digesting. I can barely eat anything solid without getting this pain. I am wondering what is going on.. ???? Before this pain, on a regular day I can have coffee, banana fir Breakfast, maybe turkey, Soup and crackers for lunch. Then for dinner maybe I'll nibble a bit from the reg dinner my sis cooks, or if I'm good, ill have peppers, hummus and some yogurt. Im a sucker for chips and salsa and chocolate with red wine... I have to start running again, that made a huge difference in my weight loss. But right now I'm just worried about this pain. My regular doctor no longer works for 1800GetSlim so I need to find a new one in the Los Angeles area. Suggestions?? Dena -
I had my surgery one day before yours, I do find myself getting hungry but not half as much as I was prior to surgery. I do not know how much protein you are managing to get in but I have determined that as long as I am eating something with high amounts of protein then I usually do not get that hungry. I have resorted to some clear soups as well as sugar free popsicles but have noticed that they do not hold off my hunger for long. If I have some greek yogurt then that will last for several hours vs maybe an hour or so for the soup. Not sure if it helps but good luck!

I like to keep it simple. 1. Cottage cheese (or yogurt) and fruit 2. black beans and sweet potato 3. Spinach and banana smoothie

I made some wonderful baked potato soup yesterday, so easy... Potato, low fat cheese, skim milk, flour, butter, onion, salt, pepper, garlic, green onion, precooked bacon, greek yogurt Saute about 1/4 c of onion and 1 clove garlic in butter or olive oil, add 2t of flour Stir in 2 c milk, will thicken Add 1 small potato baked in microwave, chopped Add crumbled precooked bacon Blend to make smooth Return to pot, bring to simmer, add 1/2 c low fat cheddar I thinned mine out a little more by adding more skim milk Serve! Garnish with finely chopped green onion and dollip of greek yogurt

Hi!! Good for you venturing out and congrats on your sleeve. So full liquid stage is pudding, soup, and yogurt right? I think it's the most challenging because you get tired of the sweet stuff pretty quick. For me trying different cream soups really helped because of their rich savory taste. Cream of wild mushroom, tomato bisque, cream of asparagus, and even cream of brocoli were all good to me. How much longer are you going to be at this stage? Just focus on how these lovely light meals are contributing to your weight loss and bringing you one step closer to goal. I don't feel I grasped this during the limited eating phases, but ultimately this is the time to get your mind to focus on the fact that food is primarily about nourishment. I wish you the best of luck and welcome to the loser's bench!!!

Planning is key! And I am horrible at it. I know what to do but it is hard to do. However, it is the biggest part that will help you succeed so I applaud you asking this question now. A couple of things. YOu know your food log that you are supposed to keep? If you fill it out on Sunday for the entire week, you will know what you are going to eat for the week and can get everything prepped early. Fill out what you will eat/drink for every meal and snack for the entire week. You can even cook it all on one day and just reheat it throughout the week. I think I am more successful when I fill all this out on paper but I also tend to not do it on paper so that isn't good. So I used an Excel spreadsheet . Just keep going down the spreadsheet for the next days. Oh, it wouldn't let me post it!! ******Note that I am a year and a half out so my food list will be different from yours!!!!!***** Basically, it should be kind of like this (though things probably won't line up here. Aug 3 Breakfast 2 eggs scrambled 12 g coffee black 0 g Snack Greek nonfat yogurt 12 g Lunch 2 oz chicken 14 g raw veggies 0 g balsamic vinegar 0 g Snack Greek nonfat yogurt 12 g Dinner chicken marsala 14 g Total 64 g But WHAT to make?! That is where I fall short. I have my dishes that I know how to make but I'm not a very good cook and don't have a wide variety of things to make. I'm still a work in progress! I would love to also hear what other people do.

I'm only 12 days out and I completely understand where you are at. Right now, while following the post op diet (and don't forget, this part is about healing safely, not losing weight), it's a mind over matter thing. Find something to do. Come up with some novel sugar free drinks to have between mealtimes (I bought an infusion pitcher and made my own cucumber-melon Water (much more interesting than bottled stuff or plain water). It's a full time job right now to work on getting in your fluids and Protein. Maybe go to the grocery store and hunt down some more interesting Soups that you can have for the next week or however long you're on full liquids. If you only have a few choices, you will be super bored. I also hunted down more interesting protein sources. I found a kefir that has 16g protein/8oz (cultured milk probiotic drink, basically a thin yogurt). I found it kind of fun (maybe interesting is more appropriate than "fun") to read labels and really look at the sugar and protein in various yogurts and soups and whatnot. Time spent prepping for your next stage is never wasted. Good luck and keep up the good work! You'll make it!

Suddenly Lactose Intolerant? Help Please
Lee replied to Lee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the replies Tiffy, Nikki and Jewels. I think this is just going to be a learning process for me. I did ok on Greek Yogurt this morning followed by Cream of Wheat w/soymilk for lunch. The Cream of Wheat was great after living on Soup and yogurt. -
Suddenly Lactose Intolerant? Help Please
Lee replied to Lee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Carol. It's interesting that I'm fine when I eat greek yogurt and cream of wheat w/soymilk, but as soon as I add in Optimum Nutrition Whey powder or Chike, I go off again. I haven't had any cream soups, except Trader Joe's Organic Creamy Tomato soup and I think I was ok with that. It seems to be the Protein powders that do me in. I'm hopeful that I'll soon be on pureed foods, just another week or so, then I can get my protein from better sources. I'm glad I'm not the only one in this boat, but that said, I'm sorry it happened to you as well. I'm glad yours cleared up. I'd hate to not be able to eat cheese etc. -
Suddenly Lactose Intolerant? Help Please

Hi Bored, Are you able to tolerate Greek Yogurt? I am really relying on it right now because it's so high in Protein. I've never been a milk drinker but I am hoping that small amounts of cheese will be fine once I get to that stage. -

Dr. Trace Curry Patients, Diet Instructions After Surgery
OCNYMom replied to 2012's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok....I'm confused too.....does mushy count as a meal? Was banded on 6/27 and I go back to the doctor on Monday. For the last two weeks I have been doing protein shakes and liquids. My doctor said 2 weeks of 3 shakes a day and 48oz - 64oz of liquids a day. I'm not taking in the liquids I should....seems like too much. I'm supposed to start mushy on Monday. I will admit I have had a little bit of chicken salad with the chicken ground up so fine its like powder with some light mayo and I seemed to do ok with it. My thing is after eating something mushy...ie: yogurt, or the chicken salad or scrambled eggs....are we supposed to still drink the protein shakes?? And when you are on mushy are we still not drinking anything with that? ARUGH!!!!!!! -
I’m 4 weeks post surgery and I’m still not up to 2 oz per meal. If I eat over 1 oz (of solid food) it hurts. I feel like I have to throw up and my mid section hurts. Sitting, standing it’s just uncomfortable. Eating yogurt and other super soft foods is ok but if I attempt anything remotely solid it feels like it gets stuck. I have a doc appointment in two weeks but didn’t know if I should get in sooner? Anyone else experience this?

Banded Monday, Diet Questions
honk replied to pbmls223's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I could have smooth soups like tomato, sweet red pepper, squash. I could not have yogurt until week 3. I did use a hand blender on the yogurt to mince up the fruit; and added milk since greek yogurt is really thick. Week 2 I was having yogurt so I had soup and protein shakes. When I moved to mushies I would have the soup wait an hour and have my protein. -
Frustrated... Having a Hard Time w/ So Many Things
54Shirley replied to ChelseaRae2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I first think about my calorie intake for the day, shooting for 800-1200 calorie window, with 60 to 80 G. of Protein So then I figure out my meals. I drink with every meal that I have. It's to painful to try to eat by itself. So I eat some, and drink some, so I don't get stuck. I checked this with my Surgeon, and like he said I am to sensitive ! So if this works, then do it... I eat 3 meals a day, that way.. and a snack ? Well if its wet like light yogurt, I can do it without Water. Even mushies would get stuck for me, and you bet I chew it up well ! So I drink some water. As long as I stay within that window for my calorie intake,,, I'm fine.. Pop is not a good thing because it's carbonated. I drank a glass of ROOT BEER one summer, and I thought it was going to kill me... Could be me though ! But I know he said no pop, alcohol, or chewing gum (could slip down, and get stuck.) So I am a Cheap Date... LOL.. Hope that answers some stuff, that's how the band works for me, and I am very comfterable with it. Shirley. -
Why The Liquid Diets After Surgery??
honk replied to Stacey Flowers's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are on liquid post op because your doctor probably has sewn your stomach above and below the band to prevent it from moving; and you don't want your stomach churning (if you were to eat solids). Please follow your doctors orders. I know it's sucks but it is for your own good. My doctor said 7 days clear liquids (stock)and then on day 8 full liquids (tomato soup) for another 7 days. On day 15 I could have yogurt which I mixed with stick blender and added milk to make it thinner. Greek yogurt has more protein which makes you feel full longer. I recommend having your broth/soup and then wait an hour to have the protein shake. This will help with the head hunger. If you have everything at once you will have another 4 hours before you can eat again.
