    Anyone heard of this?

I wonder if this is the original, non-adjustable band they started off with many years ago. They would staple off the majority of the stomach and put a band that was non adjustable and that was all the restriction someone would get, period. I don't know what the name of that band was but I can certainly see how that particular band would make a revision procedure quite difficult. Bands today are not too tricky to remove. The difficulty is with revisions from one procedure to another depending on scar tissue, type of procedure, etc.

    Close to goal...NOW WHAT????

I have been a big barrell of complications. The first of which was my port came up from the muscle back in April. I had revision surgery in August, and surprisingly enough it came up AGAIN. I have always had very very tight restriction, but instead of dealing with my doctor and discussing possibilities and solutions with him, I just continue what I am doing. I am not starving. I just eat VERY VERY little portions, but a few times throughout the day. I supplement myself with Ensure and yogurts. (I didn't mention that my doctor is extremely hard to get in touch with. When I finally do speak to him it is usually me yelling at him for the fact that it has taken me so long). Most recently I had pneumonia, which the doctors figured I had for a number of weeks without symptoms. That had a direct effect on my eating. I thought my band had slipped, but CT scan proved otherwise. With regard to what I eat. Well, today I had about 1.5 eggs with yolk for breakfast. For lunch I had a small arugula salad with goat cheese (but was only able to eat very little of it because my eggs sat in my stomach for so long). I had apple juice in between. Tonight I am having some tuna and salmon sashimi. That is a typical day for me. It is just some days, like yesterday, I can tolerate a lot more food. Then today my digestion is very very slow. I have gone days without eating, but that was months ago, when I was struggling with food challenges, coming to learn what my body can and cannot tolerate. I lose no weight when I don't eat. I just want to get through the next few pounds and have a slight unfill. I think that will help.

    port revision!

Last two visits to the fill doc didn't go so well. Needle couldn't go into the port...wrong position. It figures. My luck. I asked doc how often this happens. He tells me he has done hundreds of band surgeries and that I am the third to need a port fixed. It figures. My luck. Doc's office contacts insurance as necessary to see if they will pay for procedure. I'm STILL waiting. It figures. My luck. Do I sound a bit down? Perhaps so. I'm about to come up on my year anniversary with the band (Nov 07) and expected myself perhaps to be finishing up my last ten pounds. Instaead, I'm halfway. SO NOT FAIR..It figures. MY luck.
  4. Thank you. I had lots of problems with my band too. First band I had eroded. The second was working great and then the port flipped and the tube starting pushing out on my skin. I had a port revision to fix that and then shortly after that it slipped. So, now I'm going with the sleeve. I wish the sleeve would have been available when my first band failed.
  5. I honestly feel pretty damn good! I can def say I didn't feel this good after the band surgery at all. There were 5 of us done on Monday and I was last! As far as I know I was the only revision done. As soon as I got to my room, I was up to bathroom and took a cpl laps around the floor. Basically every time I got up to bathroom I would walk a few laps. Several of the nurses on that night said I didn't even look like I had surgery and praised me for being up and exercising. I crunched ice chips and sipped Water on and off through the night. By 8am the next day I was up walking for over a half hour. I was then taken down for swallow study and my dr came back up the elevator with me and said I could go home as soon as I drank some 1/2 apple juice+1/2 water in med cups. I haven't had any nausea and continue to tolerate fluids fairly easily as long as sipped slowly. I was the first to go home out of the 5 of us. I hope everyone else sleeved Monday October 29th is feeling better day by day!

Very impressive! You are a inspiration- My surgery is on Dec. 30th. I am about the same size as you, but a revision patient. Hope my results are that good.
  7. Is the surgeon that looked at it a band surgeon? Most of the time they don't understand what is going on with the band. I would get a second opinion about the surgery. My incisions all drained. Not unsual. I had to have a port revision surgery but that was because my port tilted. You don't want someone messing with the band or port unless they have experience with it. Just my humble opinion.
  8. My name is Becky and I'm a regular in the Gastric Sleeve forums. I had a sleeve in December 2012 and immediately after surgery developed dysphagia and have not been able to swallow anything other than pudding and ice cream in 1.5 years. I haven't lost any weight partly because I eat stuff like ice cream and pudding all day, partly because I have zero metabolism, partly because I get zero Protein therefore have zero energy therefore sleep all the time. It sucks, badly so finally I'm taking a big step and revising to a bypass. The surgeon swears it will stop the pain and minimize the achalasia which can lead to cancer. I'm totally scared though, all I hear about is malabsorption issues and trouble getting in protein leading to hospital stays and I can't handle much more. So, since this is my only option I need to hear some success stories. Can you guys please tell me that this has helped you and you aren't dying? I need some positive stories because the last thing I need is to make everything worse.
  9. Hello, My name is LaQuita and I am 'new' to this board. BUT I am not a new bander. I was banded in August of 08. I am 5'2 and weighed 241. The first fill I was supposed to have, I couldn't have b/c the port had sliped and turned sideways. The Dr could not access it for the fill. I had to have surgery again 6 weeks later so the Dr could secure the port with more stitches. I had lost over 40+ pounds (down to 198) before I had my next set of problems with my band. I got to 7cc and started throwing up so the Dr took out 4 cc, waited a ferw months and we started back again. I got up to 7cc again and this time I started throwing up and wouldn't stop. My Dr couldnt see me so me sent me to the ER to have a raiologist take it ALL out. We did this the week before Christmas. I saw the Dr the first week of January and he said that the radiologist said my and had silpped from all the throwing up. So, now that this has happened twice I am having a band revision. This time he will use the Relaize band on me. He is taking the 'other' one out and putting this one in on March 1st. I have since gained back some of the weight I had lost, from being able to eat more than I should. I am now at 225. I am an emotional eater, we have a special needs child at home (she is 20 years old) . I am her primary caregiver. I NEED encouragment especially since I feel that I have had so much trouble with my first band. Any encouragment that anyone can give me WILL BE GREATLY appreciated.!! Thanks so much LaQuita www.caringbridge.org/visit/shea
  10. I don't know why, but after researching bariatric surgery for a while now and starting the process of getting a gastric sleeve, I find myself wondering what the heck I'm doing. I don't know why I'm having these doubts. On top of my co morbidities, I am at my highest weight ever, I have constant back pain whether I stand, sit or lay down, and I'm experiencing the worst heartburn that I have ever had in my life. I recently have gone up another pant size which I swore I would never do. Yet, here I am finding myself looking up diets again to see if I can finally stick with one that will help me to lose all of this weight. I'm almost 80 lbs over weight which probably wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't so short. (4'11") Despite all of that, I've been asking myself why am I considering cutting off a large portion of my stomach, when the problem is not my stomach. The problem is my poor food choices. What if this surgery leads to complications to my health and/or constant revisions? I know in my head that obesity is just as much a threat to my health so why am I on the fence? Has anyone else felt this way before surgery? Has anyone gone through wls not knowing 100 percent that this is the answer?
  11. Hi - I am currently in the process of a revision from band to sleeve. The revision is due to my band either slipping or my body "rejecting" it. A debate between my bariatric surgeon and a couple of my other physicians is in progress - to slip or not to slip. At this juncture, I don't care about cause, I want the daily vomiting to stop and I want to begin losing weight in an appropriate way. I am excited about the revision, but I am running into a bureaucratic nightmare. I cannot seem to get an answer about what tests are required prior to surgery. I had tests performed at the end of September and some in October. I have a date with the the bariatric center on 11.11 (oddly one year to the day that I had the band placed) - and the office manager is telling me I need more recent results but won't divulge which tests need to be more recent After reading through several of your stories, I feel certain that I have made the right choice with the revision to vsg. Your experiences and the steps you have taken are both helpful and inspiring. I am ready to take the leap and join the group as a vsg newbie. I look forward to sharing my journey with this forum.
  12. I have lost a total of 36 lbs since being banded...2 weeks ago I had a port revision surgery because my port flipped. I just got my forth fill makes 7 cc now. I can really tell a big difference. I was so discouraged, thanking the weight was going to magically fall off it really takes discipline. I have to admit I wanted to lose more than 7 or 8 pounds a month. I am happy though at least I'm on the right track if I can ever recover from the surgeries and get started back on my exercise routine, I know that will help! anybody else around the same time is me? how is it going how are you coping? let me hear from you I need a buddy...
  13. Good luck to you!! Maybe you can do revision to sleeve or RNY??? Like previously said, no need to be embarrassed!

    Hi First Time Here.

Choc, although the bypass is somewhat more invasive than the sleeve, the surgeries are similar in many ways. I never had the band but there are a number of folks on the forum that have had the band to bypass revision and I'm sure you'll get some good feedback. I'm 30 weeks out following the bypass and I can tell you without hesitation that I would do it again in a heartbeat. You won't be sorry!
  15. This is a very personal decision, but if I were you, I'd give your band at least one more try. It will never magically make you lose weight, and if you don't follow the rules, it will never work for you at all. And you're going to have to follow the same rules if you revise to the bypass.

    What would you do ?

So here is the short version of my story. Banded 2007 did great lost weight kept it off, decided to revise to sleeve in 2013 because of how "great" everyone said it was and also honestly I was tired of feeling stuck for 6 years and just wanted to feel full for once. Since my revision Iv gained 10lbs, Iv felt hungrier (physically) than I ever did with the band (my stomach actually growls now !) and I can eat very large portions. Iv checked my X-rays and I know my sleeve is much larger than it should be and that my doc used a 42 Bougie and went very liberal at that. Iv obsessively researched options for revising the sleeve and Iv found a surgeon who is very experienced with this and who I feel good about. The question is, Iv had 2 prior surgeries with zero complications, is it crazy to risk it a third time ?? What would you do ?

    What would you do ?

I have a close friend who felt like she did not have enough restriction and who was always hungry. She actually works for the bariatric surgery center. There are two surgeons in the practice. She had the surgeon who didn't do her surgery order a scan to check her stomach size. That surgeon said her stomach was too big and it looked like the other surgeon hadn't taken enough off. He told her it looked almost normal. He did a sleeve revision on her and she recovered quickly and is now at her goal weight and has been for almost two years. So I think it can be safely revised, but it is a personal decision.

    Exercise, Exercise and more Exercise

I've been walking 2-3 miles a day M, T, R, & F. On Wednesdays my walking buddy doesn't walk, so I meet DH and we play racquetball. I'm trying to get to the pool more to do laps. I've been on hold the last couple of weeks after revision surgery. I don't want to overdo. Only walked a couple days last week. This week I'm hoping to up things gradually. I know I need to be doing some strength training, but can't seem to get my bootay to the gym for that. I won't be able to do that for another few weeks though (I'm not messing up my newly fixed port!).
  21. I totally understand her pain. I had my first surgery here in Des Moines IA. with Dr Eibes who did my lapband. When I went back to him when I stopped losing weight he told me that I should have probably had the sleeve in the first place. Nice of his to tell me then. We talked about a revision to the sleeve and they sent it into my insurance who denied me. Dr Eibes told me that it would take 2 surgeries from him.....the first to remove the lapband and then in another 5 months a second to do the sleeve. This would have cost me about $40,000 out of pocket. I could no way afford that so I too went to Tijuana Mexico and had both procedures for a total of $6000. When I came back I called his office and they told me that since I had the surgery in Mexico that Dr Eibes would not longer see me as a patient and that I too was not welcome at their support sessions. Told them fine. I have been following up with my primary care physician and she checks my blood work. I take all of my supplements and watch what I eat. If I should develop a problem I will just go to the ER and they will have to call and they will then have to take care of me if I need surgery etc. Other than that they can screw themselves. I am so sorry that this happened to you and that you too have no options. There are other surgeons within 2-3 hours of me but I have not contacted any of them as I had my surgery on Dec 11, 2011 and I am doing good. My primary care checks me on occassion and if I need she will send me to the ER> It is all about the almighty dollar for the bariatric surgeons here in the US. They all took an oath of "Do no harm". Guess they conveniently forgot that part.

    Finally

My surgeon has submitted to my insurance. I have a complication my hernia has slipped inside my band so I'm praying that will get me approved for a revision. Sent from my SM-G550T1 using the BariatricPal App

    Confused by Consult

Can you consult with anyone else? There are huge differences between the two procedures. I have read several posts on here about folk’s revising the sleeve. If you don’t stick to the guidelines you can just eat less crap and still regain the weight. Tmw my con worker is going from sleeve 8 yr ago to a RNY. The doctor should really be looking at all of your needs and concerns to help you decide what is best for you.
  24. Greetings All, It's been a very long time since I was last posting here. The lap band was removed after 16 months of my health worsening overall. At first I felt great! About 6 weeks post op I was really disappointed in no weight loss. At 8 weeks I had a fill and again @ 12 weeks, I lost about 12 lbs but was so ill with acid re-flux, diarrhea, and general malaise that I couldn't enjoy life. The short version is that my PCP gave me the choice of unfilling the band or removal. I chose un-fill. Ten months later it was removed. I suffered with adhesion and scar tissue, my asthma went off the chart hard to control. The whole process was scary and I am now about to regain my health (6 mo post op band removal) I have had shingles 3 times in the last year and am dragged down from that, I believe that I was allergic to the band material. My surgeon also thinks that but no test to confirm. My current weight is still less than when I started the pre-op diet. Now I am hoping that my health plan will approve my sleeve. I paid cash for the lap band in Mexico. My surgeon was Gonzales in Tijuana. The staff there were great. No Dr. who has seen me or treated me for band complications feels that the surgeon made a mistake. Many test were run to determine the problem, basically the band slipped and then caused erosion. While this may be linked to patient non-compliance (ie over eating) that didn't appear to be the case here. I believe that I may have over drank. Which I did not feel would cause a problem as long as I sipped over a time period. I now think that this may not be true or my restriction was too much. Bla, bla, bla...very bad deal for me! I don't recommend the band. I don't know yet if I will get the sleeve. Sorry, to be a bummer, but it's the plain truth as clearly as I can state.

    Home and improving

Wow! That is very expensive. I am very glad I found Dr. Aceves. I don't know about having his work published, but I do know that he has a lot of band to sleeve revision surgeries, and is doing 5 sleeves to every one band these days. I am sorry for everything you went through at the airport. I had them tear my stuff apart at the airport the last time I flew, and it was no fun. I can't imagine them doing it if I was feeling poorly. Lucky for me, I couldn't even tell I had surgery by the time I flew home.
