    "Good Eats"

    I can eat most any animal protein, legume, cheese and eggs up to 4 ounces per meal. No dairy (yogurt, milk, almond milk, soy milk, sugar free pudding, cottage cheese, etc) until the six month mark. At five weeks 1/2C vegetables are added but no corn, peas, or potatoes. At six weeks 1/2C of fruit was added once a day but not to be consumed at the same meal as the vegetables. I can substitute another serving of 1/2C vegetables for the fruit if I wish but not the reverse. Have to take one Co-Q 10 and 12 grams of fiber supplements per day plus a Bariatric vitamin three times a day. 64 oz of water of which at least 32 ounces is plain water with no added flavorings. Sugar free Popsicles, sugar free jello are permitted. Absolutely no snacking on anything between meals and no caffeine or alcohol. Some limited carbs are added in when I reach 75% of my weight loss. However I was advised to try not to start back on carbs if I can.

    Plain protein powder

    Isopure and GENEPRO both have unflavored varieties. I use Isopure. It's not 100% flavorless, not are. It's just there are no added flavorings and sugars. it's just pure 100% whey isolates. For me the taste is minimal. I add it too coffee, tea, Soups, yogurts, etc..... If you buy it, keep your receipt. If you don't like it you can return the unused portion.

    How to be Successful?

    I agree totally. This is great advice. This exactly what work for me. I just do not eat meat. So my protein snacks were cheese, nuts, and lots of Greek yogurt.
  4. No surprises during yesterday's appointment. Everything was logical and straightforward. Got some samples of Protein shakes and a ton of great information and ways of approaching the next six months and beyond. Two of my fears were allieviated: giving up cafinated coffee and my Diet Mtn, Dews. The coffee will just be for a limited period bracketed around the surgery date. Carbonated diet drinks will be dictated by what I can tolerate post-op. So...not having to give then up entirely.....just avoid for a while. Sounds like I'll naturally lose interest in the carbonated stuff on my own. She's started me on an 1,800 calorie per day "budget" with 3 meals and 3 Snacks. I've got some well layer out meal plans that are super convenient with Healty Choice meals, yogurt, 100 calorie snack packs as well as lots of good stuff to cook. Work days and days off will be easy to cover. Today was day one...no problem staying under 1,800 calories. The snacks kept me from getting overly hungry why mealtimes. Chewing things up really, really well.....much different than my normal way of rushing through meals.....was a good way of slowing down and enjoying everything. Using myfitnesspal to track. I'm pleased that nothing is really off limits like it was with my stint on the Atkins diet. I don't feel like I'm caged in. This is going to be easier than I thought, in terms of planning, cooking & convenience. Optimistic and glad to getting the pounds off by whatever means are available.

    I tried it on week 3, purees. I made a really soft scrambled egg with a bit of greek yogurt and shredded cheese mixed it. Best thing I ever had.
  6. I took time to read through this thread before posting. I'll say this as someone who still has a long way to go; when your starting weight is over 300lbs the rules are different. Sure some can make goal within a year, but for many of us that's not realistic. I started at over 400 lbs. I've been losing steadily but except for the big drop within the first 2 weeks, I can't say I'm losing particularly fast. On average I lose about 10lbs a month. I have severe allergies and some other ongoing, non-weight related health issues. I am menopausal. When I started this I knew that any changes I made were going to be for LIFE! I also fully expect this to take at least 2 years. I remind myself of those 2 facts every day and work at it each and every day. I'm not worried about the past, or being super thin. I want to have a normal BMI and I want to be under 200lbs. I don't compare myself or my progress to any one on this list or in my support group. If I feel tempted to, I log off of this board for a few days and focus solely on me. I think it's a good idea to meet with a nutritionist. I think it's important to not only be told what you should or shouldn't eating, but why. Having an understanding of things like complex vs simple carbs, natural vs artificial sugars and sweeteners, healthy fats vs bad fats has made a big difference in how I plan my meals and choose what foods I can have. Those are things that might be helpful in your discussion with the nutritionist. It took more than 2 years to gain the weight, it's honestly not unreasonable that it takes 2 years to lose it. I am on MFP as Milaxx. Feel free to send me a friend request. I share my diary with friends and try to be supportive. I am vegetarian. Between that and my food allergies, my eating is a bit different than most. I eat a lot of yogurt and eggs, but I also eat other things. I wish you success in whatever you do.
  7. I need help and ideas on what to eat?? Tomorrow will be my second out six nutrition class and I am already going crazy on what to eat.. I received paperwork listed with things I can have , but I can't buy them right now. For the past month I have been eating nothing but chicken, fish, oatmeal, boiled eggs, and light ant fit Greek yogurt. I find myself getting bored eating the same things over and over again. Oh I have had salad and salmon too! I lost 6lbs doing what I am doing and happy with the results, just that if I eat chicken for lunch I don't want it for dinner! My plan allows me to eat 3 out 5 food categories, with no fruit it carbs after lunch or dinner. I just have to make sure I am eating my Protein. I need some food ideas so can you please post me some good things to try other than the usual or a way I can be creative with what I eat. I really really want this to work . Thanks to everyone in advance ! I feel like a lost puppy.

    A week Post Op

    Hi All, Me again! Thanks for all the support and advice. Over the past couple of days I've been feeling better. Still haven't been able to get much liquid down but better than it was. I'm currently switching back and fourth from G2 lower calorie and Water, the sugar free crystal light is way to sweet for me! I can't believe that. I'm currently being monitored for any more signs of dehydration, I've called the surgeon, and if it gets any worse than I should go. I was able to get a yogurt down today. I guess this is where I acknowledge that we all are different and our cases our different and it takes one day at a time to try and get through the pain. Again, thanks for all the support!   9. Thanks! Better to be safe anyway I guess. I tried the ricotta and marinara blended for lunch and it was yum!! Everything is tasting so good. Even yogurt flavors I never really cared for before. Since being on liquids for so long, it's all amazing!

    June 30th Sleevers?

    I'm so ready to eat real food again all I've been doing thus far is sugar free pudding, water, apple juice, and my premier protein shakes. I am one of the pickiest people ever I hate cottage cheese yogurt and fish so I'm really concerned about the soft food diet.

    band bulge

    As several people above mentioned you are not so much feeling your band as you are feeling "full" in that area and perhaps even more than a bit sore right now. These early months are all about healing you did have major surgery ya know So take it easy and use the time to practice all the good band eating habits and start adding in some exercise by increasing your walking taking it slow and steady. Try to make good choices in the items you eat, and if you are still on mushy foods don't lean towards things like ice cream and chocolate. Steer toward sugar free ices, yogurt, turkey chili, and some hearty Soups you can blend up. You want to keep the Protein high and the carbs and sugar low. This will help with losing weight as well as help you making choices of what to eat and not eat for fueling your body. Take at least 20 minutes no more and no less to eat your meals. Sit and enjoy the food and try not to mulit task while eating if you can help it. If you are eating past 20 minutes you are eating into your next meal, if you are finishing your food before 20 minutes slow down. Practice getting in all your Water for the day, if your drinking your not eating...and if your hungry try drinking some water first and then waiting 30 minutes before going to that snack or next meal if it's been less than 3-4 hours since you last ate So many tips and tricks that will help you as you get your band filled that you can put into practice now and all these will help with the ultimate goal of losing weight and getting healthy!

    3 - 5 meals without grazing

    Make sure that they are all actual meals and that the other 2 aren't "Snacks." And also, eat them on a schedule when you're actually hungry or getting hungry, not just because they exist and you were told to eat them. Somedays (especially after a good workout) I am starving and feeling hungry many times a day. Other days (rest days usually) I'm not that hungry and normally eat maybe twice, with a string cheese or a yogurt in between to stop me from having any headaches. You're grazing when you run to your fridge, take a bite or two of something and then go away...then return 15 minutes later to do the same thing. If you're sitting down and focused on a balanced meal, comprised mostly of Protein, and you're treating it like a meal, then it's a meal.
  13. I eat a small amount of almonds almost every day with my plain Greek yogurt. I'm 9 months out. I just started eating nuts a couple months ago.
  14. Hello, just wondering why you would skip breakfast? You can at least have a protein shake or bar? Because that is what will kick start your metabolism. By starving yourself like that, you are actually slowing down your metabolism. That would probably help with weight loss but I am only almost 2 months post Op. I never skip breakfast and I either have a shake or lowfat Greek yogurt. Good luck!

    Dumping Syndrome?

    I don't know if I have had true dumping but sweet drinks have caused my to get sweaty and crampy. I think dairy may be playing a role, although I can handle yogurt, cheeses without issue!
  16. You're still really early to worry too much about Protein. At the point you're currently at, you need to concentrate on liquids and calories - protein is great, but just try to keep your fluids up right now. Once you hit the puree stage, then you can start packing as much protein in as you can. I can't stand the protein powders (still make me throw up, and I'm just under 7 months out!) but if you can tolerate, get what you can. Dairy can cause gastric upset/bowel issues, but if you find that you're able to drink milk or eat yogurt, look for high protein versions. I am lucky as I live in an area (Texas) which has HEB grocery, and they have a product called mootopia (love that name) with lower lactaid and twice the protein of regular milk, so it has become my go-to for getting fast protein in a small cup.

    I'm stick and I'm losing hope!

    I'm 6 weeks out and on my 2nd stall so I hear you! Mine is probably due to not enough fluids due to my work and the stress of that on top of getting sick when I eat any soft food. Back to clear/full liquids especially at work to stretch my shrunken tummy out enough to hold 1/8 to 1/4 cup of food in a few weeks. My job keeps me from being able to eat over 20 minutes (usually takes 1-1/2 hrs to consume meals even yogurt) on top of the 30/30 Fluid rule so not drinking Water for 2-2 1/2 hours then it's time for my next meal. Going back to work has stressed me out and now I can't eat the way I'm supposed to equals nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, dehydration, poor nutrition, even smaller stomach, exhaustion, plateau, and more stress! I've been a mental basket case blubbering at the least provocation and full of rage the next second! Not what I expected at all but per posts here on BP, my daughter, and my best friend this is normal and will pass. I just want to be able to eat food not just exist on liquids forever and I too want to lose more than 16 pounds....I have between 81-91 pounds to hit my goal. Sigh.....this too shall pass! ???????????? Michelle

    Getting the protein in

    My best friend is a pharmacist and told me about beneprotein. It's a little package of unflavoured protein already measured out. I add it to my Greek yogurt in the morning and sometimes to sugar free pudding. I got very sick during my pre-op phase and was only on protein shakes, now I can't stomach any of the protein shakes but this powder is at least tolerable. I find it very difficult to get in my quota of protein too but have been mixing cottage cheese on my soups etc.. Doing the best I can looking forward to seeing some ideas too!
  21. @@deeberry I'm sorry your having a rough time of it. The first thing I would do is make an appointment with the Dr. If your too tight that is defeating the purpose. The more irritated your belly gets from throwing up the more inflamed it makes the stoma around the band and the tighter the opening of the stoma can be making it more and more uncomfortable. In the meantime go back to liquids to give the stoma a rest and maybe ease some of the swelling as well as to reboost your weight loss. When I get into that spiral that is what I do. I take it back to basics. If I am swollen and it can happen sometimes just from certain foods I eat if they are too spicy or if I am sensitive to them, or even medications that I take. It can even happen as a result of a cold or allergies where I have excess (nasty) stuff in my throat and my band is tighter. I give it a rest and just revert to a shake now and then and once I feel that it is relaxed and not irritated I will resume eating solid foods. If you think you don't need to be unfilled and just need a rest, then try doing liquids for a few days. If your still having trouble with the yogurt after a couple of days of liquids then you need a small unfill. I know it can be devastating when your not able to move around like you did before. I broke my foot a few years ago and I had to be totally off of it and I was in cast and then a boot for nearly 4 months. The plus part of that was while I was on crutches I was getting so much exercise having to lift and haul my body weight around I actually LOST weight, but that was long before WLS. As you can get to moving around more start to incorporate that into your daily activities even if it's just a few extra steps or a couple of parking spots from your usual spot etc. every step counts!! Let us know how your doing...and don't give up hope!!! We can reset our minds and our bodies any time we choose to, and make a fresh start. So let this be your new start...and here we go!!!

    Getting the protein in

    That's true about other foods. I just feel as though if I actually wanted to meet my goal for Protein, I would need to eat things with the highest amount.... most cheese has 7g (I hate cottage cheese, unfortunately), whereas steak has has double that in the same amount of oz. I have been having a greek yogurt snack each day to get in an extra 9-14g. I also unfortunately hate the taste/consistency of unflavored protein in things, but I guess I should keep trying to find something to mix it with that's bearable. I did read after I posted this that getting a normal level of protein at this stage really isn't possible. So maybe the answer is really to just aim as high as you can and not stress too much about it. I'm looking forward to be adding things like nuts back in - that will also make it easier.

    There are other foods high in Protein too. cheese, yogurt. To name a few. I'm having the same issues, but I talked to my NUT, and you can help by adding unflavored Protein powder to things like yogurt, cottage cheese, V8 juice etc. I am only required to get in 50-60 grams a day, and 700-800 calories. I'm not supposed to be on shakes anymore. They don't want us dependent on them for our protein needs. I'm not even close to goal in the calorie dept, I get about 400 calories in daily, and about 10-20 grams short of protein on any given day. A person can only eat so much with this tiny pouch. LOL Wishing you luck!
  24. I had my RNY done on 6/22. Recovery was a breeze and I'm back to work this week. I also graduated from the liquid diet to pureed food this week. Kinda confused on what I can eat but I picked up some thicker Soups for a start and of course, my bff Greek Yogurt. Today, I had some cottage cheese. OMG. It tasted AMAZING. Like - I cannot believe how great it tasted. I also have had this weird feeling all over my tongue like I've been sucking on a cotton ball...no matter how much I brush my teeth or how much Water I drink, it's there. I emailed my NUT and she suggested some sugar free candy to suck on. So I picked up some peppermints and they tasted amazing too!! I feel I'm eating for the first time ever all over again!! Also, who stalled out at week 2? The scale hasn't moved since Wednesday.
