    Fage 2% Greek

totally with you - love Fage greek yogurt, it has made me a greek yogurt snob. I usually eat the 0% one because they sell it in a big pack at Costco!
  2. I am at my 11 week time and I never did the puree food stage. The thought of it made me gag. I drank protein drinks and ate yogurt, eggs, flaked tuna, salmon, and pudding. Never had any problems since. So happy not to do the puree stage. Remember, it's always best to talk to your doc if your not sure. I had no stomach problems that I know of.

im hungry and can barely eat

I'm 5 weeks also. I had my surgery the same day as you. To answer ur question, I do get full really fast with food which is why I'm still doing the bulk of my meals as Protein shakes so that I get an adequate amount of protein daily. Actually the only foods I can tolerate are eggs Beans yogurt and tuna. Everything else causes me to vomit and gets stuck in my chest.
  4. 6. Hello Everyone, Whomever opens this link and has any words of encouragement I would greatly appreciate all you could say. I was bande 11/22/10, 12 days ago. It took me a long time to recover because I do not respond well to anethisia. Once I did, about 4-5 days ago I started not doing so well with the post-op diet. As always I start off great. I have a protien shake for Breakfast and greek yogurt or Soup for lunch. But there has been about 4 days where I ate something a bit more then a "mushy". I did'nt understand why the doc said not to eat regular food. I felt NO restirction and food past through me with no problems. Then I read an article saying that harder foods make you not be able to heal properly inside and cause your band not to solidify with the stiches correctly and stuff and makes it more likely to slip in the future. DId I screw myself up already only 12 dayas out. I am devistated about telling the doctor. I see him tomorrow, day 13. I have lost about 4 pounds since surgery but the few meals I ate in the evening have me petrified. How do I know if I caused long term damage to my band? For those who have had problems, and had band surgerically adjusted or port adjusted, did yo9u have to pay surgery fees all over again? Please, any words of wisdom would help!!!!! Sandi

    Lactose intolerance

Sorry to hear about your problems. Some people become temporarily lactose intolerant. Can you try some lactose free milk? We have this in the UK http://www.lactofree.co.uk/ and there must be something similar in the US. You could try yogurt as a lot of people who have problems with lactose do OK with fermented products (that includes cheese too). I'd try just half a small yogurt to see how you go. I have IBS and I have a relative with crohns, so I sympathize with you. You could also try your protein drinks with water. If you still have problems it could be the protein powder itself giving you issues. I never did protein drinks as they make too unwell (cramps, bloating, etc). You should be OK to get your protein from real food now as you're nearly a month out. Just make sure you chew, chew, chew (fish will be easier on your new sleeve if chicken doesn't sit well just yet). All the best.

    getting worried

Hi horns10- I am an early April bander.4-2-07. I had the exact same worries. I have always been a BIG eater! Ya' know like, a side of beef, kind of eater. I had heard the stories, and for the life of me, just could not believe it! Not be hungry... satisfied with a small portion.... fill up quickly....stay full for quite a while????? It just did not add up! I went on blind faith... and.... Monday I went in, and out of surgery. I have not really been hungry! I can honestly say, I can not drink a whole shake in less than 12-15 minutes at all! Before/on pre-op diet, I thought, I could drink 3 shakes in 5 minutes flat- no problem. Not any more!! food still smells good, and I do have an interest. Today for example... I have had Water, a tea, a SF pudding cup(about mid-night when Hubby was snacking), a small bowl of tomato/basil Soup, strained french onion soup (less than a cup), one small SONIC fat free yogurt smoothie!! and <2 Protein shakes (that I shared with baby girl). I have felt full all day long! My fullness is still full, and fine, but a bit different.... Before it was a heavy, fullness, from LOTS of food, low in my "stomach area", NOW it's a higher up, tightness, pressure under my sternum, kind of fullness, from a small amount of food, and it does stay with me for quite some time! I still dream of the day that I can again, sink my teeth into an enchilada. But it is WAY, WAY more doable than on the pre-op diet!! It was painful to watch my family eat before, and now I can say " don't feel sorry for me, I'm just not hungery!". The hard part is before- not after- you can do this- even I did- Do it on your own before hand and the band will help you after (even if it's the swelling). Good luck Horns10- I will be thinking of you and praying that this pre-op stuff will come and go quickly for you!

    Sweets

I had to be physically broken of my sugar addiction. I was CRABBY for a good week. I still want sweets, but that is in my head. And for the most part I can satiate it with yogurt or fruit or a lighter version of something I used to eat. But every once in awhile, the old me comes out and demands I eat chocolate. So I have a little chocolate. But only a little. Not all the chocolates evar. LOL. Some people dump from sweets. I do not. The game is always mental with me. Ultimately it is up to me at almost 7 months out to say no to the sugary stuff.

SERIOUS ONLY: Giving up junk food.

tammy throw the cigs out and hand the starbucks coffee over to me, and no one will get hurt! just jokin. i have been doing okay..eatting with my eyes....and my stomach has been wanting to poke my eyes out for a few days. i don't think that im over eatting on junk, but i can still eat like a 3 ounce chicken breast, a cup of veggies and tonight i had a yogurt, then a cup of ice cream...Sugar free ice cream, but none the less, ice cream. i had a fill ohhh two weeks ago...i don't know if its time for another or what, but i am good alllll day long while im working then at night, the red eye food demon starts to stir.....and then lashes out at things...not bad things, yogurt is okay, but i feel like i am able to eat too much. I do feel the restriction....I have not pb'ed or anything, had one mini half stuck.......I am exercising......and the weight is coming off....but I hope Im not doing something to slow down the loss progress....I should keep a diary of my food...but like many other things in my life, i start it and then flub it. I found a great site, dont know if it has been posted here..... www.fitday.com and they have an awesome program that you can enter in your food intake....I should start using it huh???? All righty, thanks for listening.. TTYL

    What To Eat????

I have a greek yogurt smoothie during the work week. I add some additional protein powder (chocolate) and a couple of strawberries or a banana with some ice and 2 packets of splenda and blend it up in the blender. Yum, I love them. I have also used vanilla protein powder with frozen peaches. I get 1/2 of my days protein in the morning.
  13. Yeah, the pre-op diet is torture, for sure! If you were a caffeine addict (like me) and/or a sugar addict (also like me), then the initial cravings can be pretty intense. By day 4 or 5, though, you'll already be noticing weight loss and, for me, that gave me the motivation to keep going. Dropping 13 pounds in two weeks was a huge motivator. As Longer Life said, after surgery, you won't be hungry and you'll be pushing yourself to get in your fluids and Protein. "Diet" is going to be your focus for a while to come, although this is really a life change. By the time I got back to solid foods I was definitely over wanting anything sweet, or fat, or slider consistency. Try to find some Protein shakes you LOVE while you're pre-op, because post-op they might be barely tolerable. My tastes changed immediately after surgery AND I am now lactose intolerant. I can do cheese fairly well, but milk, cottage cheese and yogurt disagree with me. If you're having a hard time with the diet because of all the sweet stuff, try some warm broth. After surgery, I found that warm went down better than cold for quite some time. And, all in all, this is a VERY short time period compared to the rest of your life! Easy for me to say now that I'm past it, right? But, it is a short time and soon you'll be back to eating regular food, although not in the quantities you're used to eating. But, you'll be watching the scale zoom downwards, and that's worth a LOT, IMO. Good luck with your journeys!!
  14. I am 4 days post-op and had no problems until today. I have felt like I have a lot of air in my stomach since the operation. I've been taking in liquids - protein shakes, juice, etc. in moderation. 7 to 8 hours ago I had a yogurt smoothie and 1/2 hour later started to PB. I have had nausea and have been vomiting up clear substance (sliming). The only way to find relief is to stand up straight. If I sit and recline at all it starts all over again. I'm going to call my doctor as soon as possible -- but has anyone had this experience? The smoothie or no food has come up.
  15. I only had one puréed meal. I couldn't stand the texture. So since I had never had any complications, no pain, no nausea, no vomiting, my nut let me go right to soft, soft foods. I ate mashed potatoes, lots of cream soups, well cooked veggies and really moist chicken/turkey. And Greek yogurt, soft cheese, s/f pudding.
  16. I think there's a difference between "soft foods" and something like yogurt. I don't think you can over fill you're sleeve on yogurt - I've been told it's more like a liquid. But canned chicken, I don't think that would pass through so quickly? At 16 days, you're still healing. Please just be careful. .
  17. I have a book but it does not give any amount either just says until satisfied. Im allowed yogurt eggs cheese beans chicken turkey and fish.. . I also hsd an appointment yesterday and she didn't seems concerned that i could eat a full cup of yogurt.

EPIC FAIL ON THE PRE-OP DIET!

I had to do an 8 day pre-op liquid diet. The first few days were really rough for me and I broke down and ate a can of green beans only two days in. Then I talked to my dietician and she said I could eat yogurt and no sugar added applesauce. Check with your dietician to see if you can eat something when those cravings attack. It's no burger but it does the trick. Good luck with your surgery and God Bless!

    Second thoughts?

To be nervous is normal.. I had sleeve surgery on 9/1/16. After 8 months of going thru the process I questioned it all in the last week. It wasn't easy going thru the pre op diet for two weeks, but I got through it. I've added yogurt to my diet this last week and Sat I can have some pureed food. I've tolerated everything well, and basically was able to avoid pain meds day after surgery. As long as you are prepared you will do great! Good luck!
  20. I feel hungry but try to figure out what I want to eat and it's just too much trouble. After I come home from work out in the mornings I need to eat but often don't feel like COOKING anything. Seems like everything needs to be COOKED. I don't want to COOK! I just want some Cereal or something. Don't know what cereal we can have because our Nut says no cereal. I'm tired of eggs. Can't eat breads. Sick of yogurt. So I usually just drink a Premiere and get it over with even though our Nut says no more Protein drinks. Well, screw her. Eating is overrated. So is drinking. Today I forgot to eat again. Saw it was after 2pm. Oh snap! Ate a couple pieces of turkey jerkey. Meh, that's good enough. ::sigh:: now it's dinner time. Made a roast but it tastes gross. Not eating it. Sick of chicken, plus it gets stuck and then I have to make myself throw up so I can eat the rest of my dinner. Maybe I'll just drink another Premiere. Actually, I forgot to drink any today. Any liquids. oops. I haven't been very good with the liquids AT ALL. Gross. And they make you have to pee all the time. So annoying. But, I have to get back on track and eat regularly and drink. Does beer count? I really want a beer. I'm not much of a beer drinker but been craving it. Tried SF Root Beer. So gross. Anything SF tastes gross to me. Tried a half of non-sf root beer sno cone. SO divine! Felt sick after. No more non-sf sno cones for me. booooooo (but it's a good thing ) Tried sushi a few weeks ago. Was. Not. Good. Well, I mean it tasted super good but didn't feel so good in my tummy. Not sure if it was because I ate too many or because of the rice. I'm scared to try it again. Just ate an apple with Peanut Butter. 2nd try. Still not good in my tummy. gurgle gurgle wanna hurl. Pik, sure glad to hear you are doing better Have you been able to get off any of your meds since surgery? I'm off of my cholesterol med, half of my bp med, no more heart burn med and since stupid "top in the state" bariatric Dr doesn't do blood work on his patients until 6 months after surgery I got our family Dr to run the whole vitamin/mineral, thyroid, hormones, and whatever else panel the other day. Need to see how those B's and D and thyroid are doing. He's also running an arthritis panel because my joints hurt. They hurt worse when I drink SF liquids which I don't do anymore. oh Pik, I also had a 3 wk stall. UGH. My family dr asked how I broke it. Told him I pood. LOL! (sorry, TMI but true!) Seriously! That only happens once a week so he said I can take Colace or the like every day and eat Fiber. Isn't there a fiber pill or something? ugh LOL

    Soups

My Protein shakes fill me up, but they are shakes I make myself typically before heading to the gym. It's usually Protein powder, greek yogurt, and whatever mix in I have on had. Sometimes that's nut butter, sometimes a bit of rolled oats, sometimes a handful of spinach. I've even added baked sweet potato or pumpkin puree. I think 41lbs at 10 weeks is a good weight loss and eating 500 calories a day is fine. I was eating between 400 - 600 at that point as instructed by my NUT. I was allowed Soup during all liquids and always added a scoop of unflavored protein to it. I am allow regular soup now and have been since week 6 when I was allowed to eat whatever I could tolerate.

    Pureed foods

Approved on my plan: lentil or black bean soup (pureed in the blender), scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt (no fruit bits), small-curd cottage cheese, mashed banana or cooked carrots with protein powder. All in pea-sized bites chewed to applesauce consistency.
  23. Hi GreginMI, The instructions that I got from my surgeon are as follows: "For the first month following surgery, make sure to drink at least 2liters of fluids/day and get between 60-80 grams of Protein from soft vegetarian sources, eggs, fish and seafood." This is followed by a list of acceptable foods (i.e. cream of wheat, mashed potatoes, eggs, Beans, veggies burgers, yogurt, soups, fish, rice, egg noodles, etc.) Of course he also told me to avoid foods high in sugars, fats, and alcohol. At the hospital he told me just to try things as I felt like it, but to really push and prioritize liquids, especially for the first three weeks. Some surgeons are like this I've been told. He's one of the best in the country and has own reasons for not having his patients follow a staged plan, I'm sure. There are quite a few people on this site who have used him and have nothing but the highest praises for him. Incidentally, he also doesn't make his patients do a pre-op diet. The only thing I had to do was a clear liquid diet and drink Colyte 1 day before surgery. However, I tend to find it easier to have stricter guidelines to follow, which is why I plan to discuss the plan Golden laid out above when I meet with my surgeon on Friday. To be honest though, aside from the one attempt at the meatball, I have been sticking to a strictly clear liquid diet, simply because I didn't feel like eating anyway. Right now, clear liquids are about all that I can seem to consume comfortably, and sometimes if I accidentally take too big a sip even the liquids make my tummy hurt. Sorry, I guess this is a really long answer to your question. But maybe it makes more sense now? Anyway, ever since my adventures in meatball land I've gone right back to clear liquids and am doing ok here for the time being Thanks everyone for your advice and concern!! I think I'm on the right track now thanks to everyone's input. I have to say, this is such a great site!

Seriously.. What's up with yogurt these days?

when I was living in Bulgaria I became spoiled with fresh amazing real yogurt, after all as I was told MANY times, Bulgarians invented it (don't waste your breath telling them otherwise) and the bacteria is Bulgarensis, which is true. So after I finished the Peace Corps and came back to the States, the "Greek" yogurt craze was only just beginning and I was like, hey, why are they calling it Greek?!! It's Bulgarian!! And I was already used to the thick consistency. Making your own is the best but what is this no-lid stuff you guys are talking about? you must mean the little tiny individual servings like yoplait, (which I would NEVER eat because its pure sugar). Maybe I just eat more of it than most because I buy it in tubs and those tubs come with lids and I never have it long enough for it to go "bad". My favorite hands down is Brown Cow Organic Plain Greek. Low sugar, low carbs, good level of protein.
