Surgery Moved Up To Next Monday... Wooot And Aaaahhhhh!
DebInAZ replied to funkeechiggen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh yes I'm really ready, I've been on hold for 5 months, I wasn't supposed to have this done until next month but the Dr. relented, hahaha...I went in earlier this yr to have a revision from band to sleeve but woke up with just the band removed d/t erosion, not sever but bad enough that they couldn't do the sleeve, So here I've been sitting waiting all this time and now it's finally my turn I'm not to nervous just a little antsy, but doing ok.I'm starting to look like a stabbing victim though, 5 scars from the band, 5 new scars from the attempted revision, and now I will most likely have 5 more, in the end it will all be worth it, I don't think I will be wearing a bikini anyways. LOL -
As I come closer to my last pre op required appointment which is Thursday, then they will submit approval. I am thinking of more issues, being a revision I am terrified of losing weight and then regaining it just like with the lab band. I do not want put my self and body thru this all to regain the weight back. I know I didn't "fail" with the band, we weren't a good partnership. However, will the sleeve be a better partner long haul? =\

I just spoke to someone at Aetna . They denied my request for revision to gastric bypass due to the fact that I didn't follow up for the full 2 years after my surgery. Yes we did appeal. Anyone in the same boat. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Anyone wish they had gastric bypass instead of sleeve?
Macy6 replied to Girl on the Blvd's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went in seeking bypass and my surgeon recommended this. His big points were; my age (I'm 32), lack of co morbidities (I do have sleep apnea but he was talking about diabetes) and my difficulties with taking long term anything (vitamins in this case) He said if I were to get the sleeve now, and of course be successful that let's say 20-30-40 years down the road I hit a bump in life that revision to bypass is pretty easy, but if I get bypass and then hit a bump then I would have a revision to a band? He thought the sleeve would be good because it still gives me the power to control my weight better, without the worry of nutritional issues for now. I hope to not have to revise, but its nice to know that there is another option. I do realize you do take Vitamins with the sleeve but not like a bypass patient. -
I've tried coming off my PPI twice post-op and had acid issues again immediately both times. I'm okay with being on a PPI forever. I would rather that than have another surgery and revise to bypass with all the potential complications there. I mean, I'm already on vitamins for life, what's one more pill to take every day?

Insurance Preapproval Letter Received Today!
TaiDyed posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Moving forward...received the preapproval letter today from my insurance provider. Oddly, since I am a band to sleeve revision - they claim the sleeve is approved, but the removal of the band is not. Then there are additional notes indicating that "removing the lap band is considered part of the approved surgery on my stomach and that the code could be approved after the surgery" - I get that it's all an insurance and coding game and that my surgeon will do what he needs to do to make sure everything gets covered appropriately, but still it's like a puzzle to have to read between the lines. At this point, I go in on Monday 7/23 for the pre op appointment. Finalize paperwork and purchase the 2 week liquid Protein diet. I would prefer doing my own Liquid Protein, but of course they have their own product and require purchase from within their program. I went through it before when I had the band done through the same center back in 2008, so I know it's not miserable, but still, I wish they'd be more flexible. Oh well, it's a small price to pay. Band to sleeve revision surgery date is set for Monday, 8/6. Eleven days later I will Celebrate turning 44. I'm in the midst of a gazillion different emotions. Excitement. Fear. Disbelief. Doubt. I talked w/ my BFF tonight for a bit. She's known me since we were 15 and had seen first hand my struggles over all these years. She said that doing this needs to be for me and me alone and made it very clear that my friends love and adore me no matter what my appearance/weight is. I know she is right. In every aspect of my life, I am content and happy. Every aspect EXCEPT my weight. So, here I go. Again. Only a few more weeks to not over think things and freak myself out even more. -

Hiw Much Can The Doctor Fill You In One Session?
karewpah replied to lsj's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Your Dr will likely have a protocol. My suggestion is go with the protocol. Give good, honest feedback each session. Don't be quick to fill, fill, fill. Each fill will require behavior adjustments on your part both physical and me gal ones. It is my belief, un proven and just a gut feel, that many issues that arise come from being filled to fast without enough time to adjust to each feel. I've suffered a slip and revision surgery...i'm more cautious than I was before. I wish you a super successful journey. For now, drink tons of Water, crystal light or unsweetened tea and get your Protein in. And if you're really hungry all the time, don't use Protein shakes. Get your protein for lean sources of chicken, fish, pork. Beef...whatever catches you fancy. -
The Yellow Brick Road to Weight Loss

Welcome!!! I always love to see some new posters around, as our family grows we get ever tighter and tighter here I am also a revision from band to sleeve. If I had to go over it again, I never would have even given the band a second thought to be perfectly honest. It is much too easy to cheat and way to hard to lose with it. I never found the elusive "sweet spot" that so many rave about and ended up feeling defeated and like a total failure. Ever since being sleeved, and going in this with a whole different view than when I was banded, I know I'll be successful in the end! I'm not losing as fast as many here, but I Celebrate every pound and am enjoying the differences already! I'm fitting clothes I haven't fitted in since I was first banded, and now those same clothes are starting to fit a little loose!!! Yeah!!! Very soon I will be wearing clothes even smaller and I'm very close to my "Less than my lowest band weight" goal!! Enjoy your time here. Everyone is always very helpful and supportive. You will likely learn more here from those of us who are already sleeved, and many others here who are at goal, than you will from your own Doctor! That is because we are the ones going through the real experience. However, it is always best to follow your Surgeons advice if you are ever conflicted. All the best to you, and I believe you will do excellent!! I love my sleeve!!! -
anyone out there 6yrs+ or more ??

No issues directly with my band. I loved that little thing. About a year ago, I started having problems with esophageal motility (motility is the function that moves food through the esophagus into the stomach). My surgeon and gastro doc strongly recommended removing my band because it could be aggravating the problem. I had it removed in April 2012 and revised to the sleeve in August 2012. Last year I talked with my surgeon, local gastro doc, and a gastro doc that my surgeon insisted I consult. The consensus is that my esophagus was damaged from decades of "silent" reflux. In other words, I had reflux with symptoms that I didn't recognize as having a gastrointestinal source. I can remember going to an ear-nose-throat specialist in the mid 1980's because of a persistent cough. He told me it was probably from reflux, but I didn't believe him and didn't pursue any treatment for it (of course, back then, there weren't a lot of good treatment options). So the reflux had almost 30 years to make a mess of my esophagus. -
Hello Everyone! I am new to the RNY community; I came from Lap Band Talk. I am currently in the process of trying to get a revision. I have not been successful with the lap band and my doctors now feel the lap band is just not as successful as anticipated. Some people do amazing with the tool and some of us don't. I am 4 months into my 6 month diet; cardiac clearance is complete along with my psych evaluation. I still need the letter of necessity from my primary care Physician. I am nervous and haven’t asked for it, although we have already discussed this revision. I am one of those that don’t like asking people for things and GOD forbid if I have to ask more than once. I should mention this is a new PCP and I have only been there 2 months. My last doctor was a piece of work and I had to have my heart doctor get the letter of medical necessity from him because he was giving me a hard time. I can’t wait to meet the healthy, skinny me. She’s in there somewhere… But first she needs a letter from her PCP

The Yellow Brick Road to Weight Loss
Becca replied to virtualgirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
WELCOME-Congrats on your journey to get well! As far as which surgery to get, I have not been successful with my lapband and I am having it removed and switched over to the sleeve next week. Many others on the forum have had revisions as well. One thing that I really noticed about sleeve patients is how truly happy they are. This forum is so supportive because most everyone is experiencing success. With the band, there are so many different issues that can go wrong. Plus, you have a 85% chance of having some sort of corrective surgery within ten years. I really wish I would have known about the sleeve three and 1/2 years ago when I had the band. Had I known, I would have NEVER had that thing put in my body. I will be happy to talk with you more after I have my surgery. Good luck with everything! : ) -
Wavering back and forth which surgery choose the sleeve, about 3 weeks pre-op
No game replied to ccrim03's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A lot of us thought about the band first... But I don't think I've read one person have the sleeve and say afterwards "darn I wish I got the band" there is a sub forum here called band to sleeve revisions you might find some interesting stuff there. The sleeve is a major surgery and not easy at times but most of us are happy with it. Good luck on your research. -

ShrinkyDinkMe22 replied to ccrim03's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was going back and forth about band, vsg and rny. After talking with my Dr vsg was the best option for me. He too said soon the band will not be done any more. Too many complications. Most either revise to rny or sleeve a few years later. Or just have it removed bc of problems. -
You're reading studies about the old lapband from 15 years ago. There are 3 different versions of the band and the most recent version has a much lower revision rate. http://www.lifeshape.net/blog/2013/02/study-demonstrates-the-long-term-benefit-of-laparoscopic-adjustable-gastric-banding/

Before Pictures Taken Last Night
Sojourner replied to eyeononederland's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
A "reality check" is one of the best motivators for change! And instead of feeling depressed about your weight, try to redefine those images into ones of temporary and not permanent, because you have a real opportunity to change those images! I believe I am not alone with other members on this forum who really dislike seeing their "before" pictures. I am still thankful that I am granted an opportunity to revise those images with my diet. I want to leave the past in the past, and focus on where I am going, not where I have been. I never want to forget where I was, because the past and those images will continue to assist me to remain compliant with my diet and exercise. -
No band for me today
marfar7 replied to wordygirl74's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so afraid of that. My dr said he'd do it in one surgery, however if he goes in and it's not safe to sleeve me at the same time, he won't. My insurance only covers revision if it's from complications of the band cuz my bmi is 28. If I have no band, I doubt that they would pay for it with my bmi being under 40. I'm praying that my stomach is fine and he can do it at once. Please, please, please, let it be so... -
Why Not Sleeve? Surgeon Consult Friday
SashaWLS replied to drexelgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If the sleeve goes well, it's great. But if the sleeve goes badly, it's much, much worse than a band that's gone badly... For what it's worth I originally wanted the sleeve (badly) but after doing a lot of research, the decision came down to a numbers game... -- The mortality rate for the sleeve is 1/200... Mortality rate for the band is 1/2000. -- Sleeve complications are MUCH MUCH worse than band complications... 1% of the people who get the sleeve have a leak, and those who do are in agony, in and out of the hospital for up to 5-6 months at a time, and say they regret the surgery (search leak on verticalsleevetalk.com and see what that's like for them...) -- roughly 1/3 of the people who get bypass or sleeve gain it back with no other option afterwards than to get the band on top of their cut-up stomach (i.e. carny wilson) The sleeve seems to be a fabulous option when it works! But the risk that it could turn out to be a total disaster is also much higher. I have a 4-year old daughter and don't feel like I have the right to gamble lightly with something that might take me out... If the band works, then I'm done with only a minimally invasive surgery and no cutting up of my organs. People do have problems with the band, and if I were one of those people I might consider the sleeve as a revision. But a lot of people are also successful with the band, and for me, it didn't make sense not to at least try it and hope it works!!! -
Has anyone went from the lapband to the sleeve. If so is the weight loss slower after a revision surgery?

Purchasing Insurance this November via ObamaCare... Need Recommendations!
bwaydiva posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
Hi team! I'm moving forward with a revision surgery (lap band to sleeve) but will need different insurance. I have a small business and already have an out of network PCP whom I ADORE. Does anyone have any recommendations about insurance through the exchanges? Or an insurance they wouldn't recommend? I'm looking specifically for an insurance that has the "fewest hoops" to jump through. I live in Northern California and will be having the surgery with Palo Alto Medical Group. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!! Sheila -
Sugar... Questions.
LivingFree! replied to iHeartCWU's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There have been maybe two or three sleevers in the support groups I attend who have experienced dumping episodes occasionally. I personally have never had any dumping issues in my three years since surgery. Sleevers I know have not experienced it. Sorry your mom has to endure such extreme discomfort. Since her procedure was 15 years ago and there has been so much progress made in the field of RNY since then, I wonder if there would be any kind of revision surgery she could have done to correct this for her to improve her quality of life. -
His is it, the time has come. Tomorrow morning I have my sleeve revised to an Omega loop gastric bypass, I am so ready for this, mindset is spot on and the excitement has kicked I . Of course I am nervous too, see you on the other side Paul
