1 Year Post Op - What are you eating?

I'm kinda curious what type of protein shakes you're drinking that would even need the ice cream added to it. Thats a new one I haven't seen people doing. Like Premier Protein already tastes like melted ice cream to me. I hope the low fat ice cream is also a low sugar/high protein one (like Halo Top) otherwise you're just adding unnecessary calories. My breakfast is either eggs or Oikos Triple Zero yogurt. Lunch is usually a P3 and raw veggies with hummus or a dip made from greek yogurt. I'll have a Quest protein bar in the afternoon as a snack. Dinner is lean meat like chicken or ground turkey. Before bed I usually have a rice cake with PB2.

    Calorie Counting??

On the average day I get in well over 100 grams of protein. I eat greek yogurt and put kashi in it. That's a lot of protein there too. Just read labels. You'll be surprised how fast it adds up.

    Food Suggestions Needed Please

Ok...sorry ,some tough love......your lunch is definitely all wrong.....besides not enough Protein, too many carbs. And I would skip the crackers at Breakfast. How about celery with Peanut Butter for breakfast if you can digest it ok or greek yogurt? eggs and bacon are good. If you are worried about fat, try some turkey bacon. I start my day with a Protein Drink rather than end the day with it so I have 30 grams in me right away. For lunch how about Tuna salad? Egg salad? chicken salad, deli ham or turkey with some cheese and a pickle. Deli ham and turkey are usually moist and easy to digest. Chili, lentil Soup, black bean soup. There are tons of alternatives that are better than peanuts and goldfish.
  4. Thanks for the support. I lost 6 lbs after discharge (I waited a few days to weight myself because I am a nurse and know the weight gain from the Iv fluids was going to happen) but after waiting 5 days I had gained 3 lbs. Right now I am drinking about 32 oz of protein shake mixed with light and fit Greek non-fat yogurt to make 64 grams of protein a day and about another 40 oz of water or low cal/no cal fluids. My diet advanced to puréed soft foods such as tuna or chicken moistened and mashed potatoes as well as cottage cheese and soft foods. No real problems with digestion this far, broths and soups are good as well. I am definitely trying to watch the sodium intake. I guess I'm just nervous I'm eating the wrong things but I'm following my physicians plan. Thanks

    For The Kettlecorn Lovers

They have a line if syrups (regular and sugar free) that a lot of coffee houses use to flavor specialty coffee. They are a sleevers best friend! Here is their site... http://www.torani.com/ There are other brands too, but this one is most available to me where I live. You can order directly from them, or on Amazon I think. I use them to flavor shakes, in Protein ice cream, to flavor plain greek yogurt, you name it! I used it in place of oil in the popcorn recipe..sweetens as well!

    Fruit Anyone?

I'll be 10 weeks Monday... I have strawberries regularly- with greek yogurt, on a breakfast tortilla pizza, in pancake bites (thanks EggFace). I bought some red seedless grapes last week and had no problem... until I logged them on MFP and realized how sugary they were. I've also put peaches in yogurt. I've done bananas in shakes and on breakfast pizzas. I've made a few recipes with pineapple, haven't had it by itself. At 4 weeks out I had some watermelon. I haven't had really any problems with fruit.

    Fatigue At 3

Generally, the complex carbs (the courser, whole grains and more fibrous vegetables) are the preferred, but the simpler carbs can be worked in as well if combined with your Proteins - a little fruit mixed in with greek yogurt, for example. Carbs in general don't provide much in the way of lasting sataity and can even promote hunger in short order (that's why restaurants often hit you with a bread basket as soon as you sit down - it sells more appetizers and bigger entrees!) but if combined with proteins, which provide the longest sataity, things average out. Some vegetables mixed in with meat is great - a stir fry or stew, or extra veg added to chili. A few whole grain crackers or half slice of whole grain bread with some sliced meat and/or cheese worked well for me - the trick is to add just enough without going overboard, and watching if any of these things trigger you into overconsuming them - you don't want a couple of crackers to lead to the whole box! The premise of the low carb diets, whether done intentionally or just as a result of low calorie/high Protein diets that we are typically on post-op, is to keep our body's reserve of glycogen (short term stores of carbs) at a minimum to promote fat burning from our long term fat stores to get the energy that we need. The problem is that some of us don't metabolize those fat reserves all that quickly so we run out of energy easily, or we have fairly high activity levels that burn through the glycogen quickly - it's somewhat like the "good old days" when if we wanted to buy something we had to go to the bank to cash a check rather than just use a debit card. The trick is to keep your "pocket change" of glycogen/carbs high enough for routine living while still low enough to keep burning that fat.

    Granola

So I made my homemade granola for my yogurt because I really don't like the tanginness. I added cinnamon and Splenda to my yogurt then I made my granola, here's my recipe: 3 1/2 cups rolled oats 1 1/2 tbs ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 cup SF vanilla syrup 1/2 cup SF almond syrup 2 cups slithered almonds Mix it all together and place on a sprayed baking sheet and baked at 325 until golden brown and crunchy. Tastes so so good.

    14 Years Post Op

It is common to have some limited weight gain after weight loss surgery. They call it a 20 pound bounce. The important thing is not let go beyond this 20 pounds. Most times this weight gain is due to a poor choice of snacks. Snacks should be limited to primarily to whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. Also do not expect to lose weight at a rate similar to right after surgery. Generally if you gained the additional weight over a couple years, then it may take a couple years of watching what you eat to get back down.

    Diarrhea

Yes, I am 5days post-op and had extreme diarrhea since coming home, except for today. I called my RD Friday and she told me to check the "sugar-free" liquids bec many contain sugar alcohols (sorbitol, sucralose, etc) which can promote it. My protein shakes are pea protein based and only have stevia, however it was also giving me loose stool. I also notices that my B-12 quick melts & calcium citrate soft chews have sugar alcohols. My RD suggested that i drink some Pedialyte and then advance to full liquids (hot cereal, cream of wheat/rice, grits) and non-dairy yogurt. Today (Sun), i only ate the Cream of Wheat, Cream of Rice and Grits made with high protein almond milk, non-dairy yogurt and drank water. I have had NO diarreha, but I also have NOT had a bowel movement at all today. Which, Im ok with for now, but I am about to try and drink a protein shake and hopefully my bowels will move w/out giving me diarrhea. I hope this helps a little. my story... my emotions

Thank you Tony for replying to my post! I saw my husband eating mexican food from the favorite place we like to go and that did it for me. I been crying, cursing and everything. I can't tell ppl not to eat in front of me and tv forget it. Fast food one of my weakness. So I am in a way glad to hear its just not me. As far as eating I can eat a whole popsicle n feel fine. I only take about four or five teaspoons of Soup and then stop. I'm just so scared to take more and regret it. Water kinda hurts going down but gatorade is ok. Apple sauce is the worse but I can eat a whole 3.9 oz. and I can eat a low fat 6 oz yogurt slowly. I dont feel any restrictions. Im so clueless. I wish you the bestest luck and hopefully soon we can be able to say we did it thank you so much!

    my story... my emotions

I got quite emotional when I was at day 5 or so too. That little voice was telling me that I had really screwed up doing this to myself and it was never going to be the same. It was all negative. I cried about it. I was pretty depressed. Then, I was at week two and found I could add Protein shakes and I tried that and it was a little better. Week three added milk, cheese and yogurt. I was so happy to get to eat cheese! I could chew it! Before I knew it, I was on soft food. I cant hold very much, but it feels good to get to eat what my family is eating. I have one more week of soft and I got to regular food! It does get so much better than the first week! Hang in there!

    Ready To Give Up

Thanks! I know i have to take it more seriously. The eating that is. As far as Protein, most of what i like are soft ones like greek yogurt, cheeses, milk, hummus, Peanut Butter, etc. The solid Proteins that i eat are chicken, chopped meat, Beans, eggs, and i can tolerate tofu (although i've never prepared it). The nut is allowing me to have my egg white omelette on a piece of toast cuz it just grosses me out to eat it alone. That's usually my Breakfast. For lunch she recommends salads (with chicken or beans) but that has never ever filled me up unless i had a sandwich to go along with it. I am still hungry after that and end up going for a bowl of high Fiber high protein Cereal. The reason why i feel like giving up is because i feel so deprived and whenever i feel deprived, i go for the foods i'm not supposed to be eating (and somehow those go down perfectly, and in great quantities). I'm wondering if i should even get a fill at my appt this monday. I mean i can get through the egg on toast with sliced tomatoes pretty well. It's dinner that is always my problem.......in those first few bites, either i'm not chewing well or i'm eating too fast cuz i'm not concentrating and then i get stuck.... what do all of you eat for your meals? lapbandaddy, i'm with you there. Protein was really never the star of my plates. I always ate protein but not in such great quantities and certainly not by itself. What Protein Bars have you found to be good?

    Which fruits to have?

I haven't had a problem with any fruit. Early on I ate applesauce, bananas, canned peaches and pears that were canned in Water and not syrup~ so no added sugar. Now I can eat almost anything. I eat blueberries and strawberries daily (with yogurt, almonds, flax and chia seeds) I had watermelon the past couple of days and it was fine. Apples can sometimes be tricky for me I don't chew them enough. Soft fruit like peaches, pears, plums are all good! I haven't had any adverse reactions (Ie. dumping) with fruit. BUT, I have had candy that didn't work out so great!

    STALLED FOR ONE MONTH!

Yep! Embrace the stall. It happens. Stalled eating 800 calories a day for 20 days. Would not have believed it if I had not experienced it myself. Just Stalled up/down 2 lbs for 3 weeks. Then dropped 4 lbs in 4 days. Just keep following the rules. I also tried switching more animal Protein for milk or yogurt and that may have played a roll. Keep at it. You will succeed! How much do eat.

Everyone's program is different. ON day 1 after surgery, I was on water and ice chips (30 mls water every hour). On day 2 after surgery, i was on 4oz of high protein shake or low-sodium strained cream soup three times a day, and 64 ounces of clear liquids. From day 3-day 14 (so now), I am allowed four 8 ounce high protein shake (less than 150 calories per 8 ounces), 32 ounces of clear fluids. Sugarfree popsicles count as clear fluid, but no jello post-surgery. I can substitute one of the protein shakes with strained low-fat healthy request cream soup or a light greek yogurt (Dannon light and fit Greek is what's recommended). Premier protein shakes are discouraged as they are made from whey protein concentrate (instead of isolate) and have oil, cellulose gums and gel, and carrageenan in them. After 2 weeks i will have a follow up visit with my surgeon and nut, and they will determine whether I advance to the pureed stage or stay on liquids for another week. I was on the liquid diet for 2 weeks pre-surgery, so it's getting pretty old. Yup, 19 days with no solid food so far, only 11 to go!
  19. I was banded in May 2011 by Dr.Ortiz in TJ Mexico. I can't believe it's been 9 months since surgery. I have only kept the first 10 pounds off since surgery. I have had 2 fills & I'm at 8cc in a 10cc band. I know what I'm doing to sabotage my success...I don't exercise, I eat foods that are "easy" to eat (ice cream, yogurt, pudding, and i have found that if you smother things with ranch dressing & butter & it goes down easier, and chocolate!) I get VERY discouraged but I've realized it's not the band, it's ME! I thought it would be a quick fix, I yo-yo with my weight & I wanted something that would regulate my food, which the band does, but I have gotten used to the loop-hole way of eating around the band. At least I can say I haven't gained. I started to go to the gym about 3 weeks ago & that has helped a lot, now I need to work on the food side. I would like to lose the last 30 pounds by my 1 year anniversary date in May....so I've got 14 weeks...and I hope with the support of this site, and my new found resolution to be rid of the control I let food have over me & realize I'M WORTH THE EFFORT, I will achieve my goal!! Thanks for reading my rant, I hope you all have success on your lap-band journey, cause it ain't easy!!!
  20. Trouble - I was sleeved 5 days ago and about 30 min before my surgery I got really scared and didn't think I could go through with it - but I did. And you know what? I am so glad I did. I think I posted on another thread that it was the best gift I could ever give myself and I truly believe that. I did feel pretty tough for about the first 6 hrs after surgery but by the next morning (my surgery was at 6pm) I was up and showering had little if any discomfort and it has only gotten better from there! You have half of the post op battle won - you already know what the adjustments to eating smaller portions are like from your lapband. I really think that your husband knows you are afraid and that makes him afraid too. Talk to your surgeon and tell him your fears, and if you aren't ready just yet then wait until you are. You need to do what is right for you. I hope you can find peace with whatever you decide sweetie. TX HS FB Coach - I was sleeved on Friday the 16th and can start the mushy/soft stage this Friday. There are alot of good threads about what to eat in those stages here, you might try looking around for them. A few things I have seen that others are eating in this stage are scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, refried Beans, cottage cheese, applesauce, soft cooked veggies, tuna-chicken-egg salad, cheeses, yogurt and I have seen where several like to take a deli slice of turkey with cream cheese rolled up - I can't wait to try that one. I hope this helps some.

So I lost 1lb and ate a lot of food?

My kids are visiting me this week and I have taken them out to eat at great places in Chicago. Now mind you I am eating way less than before but I stuck to the plan religiously before they got here and did not lose 1 oz but then they come and I lose 1lb??? Go figure! I guess its the walking around and bowling that helped. I am also trying to stick to the rules, no bread, no water with meals (that is really hard to do), eat the good stuff . I ate pasta, a little, some popcorn and some frozen yogurt. I nibbled on this and that but no where near the crap I used to inhale. I guess the band is doing its job. Now I have to do mine:thumbup: and I get my first fill this week!

    Can everyone PLEASE post

I was banded on December 31, 2008 and have lost (since surgery) 63lbs as of yesterday's Doctor's visit. It had been six weeks since my last visit and I lost 12lbs in that 6 week period with little or no restriction! Loosing too fast definately makes me nervous because the reason for choosing lap band over any other was for the gradual more natural loss. I was also filled for the 3rd time yesterday bring me to a total of 6cc in a 14cc band, and was nervous about that also because why on earth would I want to be filled and have been loosing between 9 and 12 lbs each month! The doctor calmed me down though and explained to me that because I was loosing on the high side, I did in fact need a fill and this was the reason behind me not feeling that restriction....everytime I loose, I get a little wiggle room in my band...lmbo I do eat more than 4 oz...believe me...lol but as stated yesterday I'm kinda buring off what I eat... It makes sense. My snacks consisted mostly of yogurt n' protein shakes, etc...... and while this is okay...I was advised to switch some of my snacks to full solid proteins like fish etc...and limit the full liquid and softer protein snacks and that I would find that I would get back closer to 4 to 6oz for those 3 meals as opposed to that 6 to 9oz that I was doing...lol lol. I tried this today... and one of 2 things happend...either this fill hits the spot or the change in menu is working....I'll keep you posted...lol EVERYBODY is different! Once you get the hang of what a typical meal should consist of...and what you should be eating only in moderation.....and balance that with a little exercise...even if it's shopping in Wal-Mart or the mall for about an hour a few times a week...or going there for that one item you keep forgetting and using that as an excuse to walk the store to see whats new...lol and finding yourself a hobby or 2 that really express that part of you that you never knew existed.....hint hint...you get the idea!

Day 3 On Liquids And Crazy

Jennabe, I'm day 4 post op and having hunger too. My hubby's been gone away on business (he comes back tonight) but he eats in the other room and has been eating things I really don't like this past weekend. Maybe you can ask them to go in another room and tell them how you are feeling. They need to support you! I have no tips on hunger right now. I've eaten some jello and popsicles and it helps for a few minutes. Saturday I can start full liquid with pudding and yogurt which I hope will help. I have no advice on what will help since I'm in the same boat with you. Good luck and stay strong! It's hard right now.

    Not Enough Calories?

Turkey and chicken are good sources of protein as well. I like slices of deli turkey or chicken around string cheese or even a low fat sesame stick. My little snack in the afternoon is 1/4 can of the chicken breast, chopped up really fine with some cilantro and onion and a smidge of miracle whip, using carrot sticks or sesame sticks as dip. You get a lot of protein, a little veggy or carb, and it holds you over for a long time! The other ideas are protein shots or greek yogurt. Good luck!
