RaisnHL- I had to complete my 6 months of medically supervised dieting with a dietician, psych eval, EDG, blood work and pre-op clearance from my PCP before they scheduled my surgery date. I was told it typically takes 6 weeks for insurance authorization so they tentatively schedule you 6 weeks out. I also had have a phone call with a financial coordinator to discuss the cost and payment of the surgery.

I’m curious… how/when did you guys get your surgery dates? I’ve been really hoping to have surgery in June because school will be out, but I’m not sure what to expect. I’m self pay, in Virginia, and my doctors office wants me to complete 3 diet visits (my last is in May) What should I expect next? I was hoping then I would move straight into the pre op diet phase and get a surgery date.

Gas X after vertical gastric sleeve.
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Vivis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, I took it every 4ish hours for the first 2 weeks post-op. I didn't have a ton of gas pain, which I'm not sure how much was my surgeon and how much was the gas-x, but most surgeons do recommend it at least for the first few days after surgery. Walking regularly, sleeping somewhat propped up, and a heating pad all also help. -
May 6th! Liquid diet for one week starts TODAY. Right now! 🤣

Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.
fourmonthspreop replied to Donna zariya's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Agree with this. It's all about how you feel and if you think you can handle it. At the end of the day it's best to stick to your dieticians word. I'm not trying to give you a reason to do anything but I have noticed the wls guidelines in the US are very anti drink vs. Europe. I personally think you're too early on and your stomach is probably still healing. I will tell you I went against my dieticians word and had a drink before the 6 month mark she gave me because I go to a lot of events and parties. I had a long talk with myself and my mom (who is a physician) and came to the conclusion to just try one drink. I made sure it had no sugar or carbonation in it so I did a vodka water with lemon juice. Personally it didn't hit me any different than pre op. I had the drink 2 months and some weeks post op. I will say you can feel the alcohol a lot more (not in the getting drunk sense) but you can feel it go down your esophagus and into your stomach and intestines and it hurts and burns and even makes you cramp a little. Not very pleasant. Anyway, it's up to you. 3 weeks is pretty early on. I will say at 3 weeks I was so focused on feeling better and hydrated I did not want a drink. It might make you feel awful because you're recovering. In my opinion, just have a mock tail. If not, try to decide if it's really worth it, if you can handle maybe getting sick at a big event or bad dehydration without being able to chug water or eat greasy foods the next day. Nausea and fatigue after eating
catwoman7 replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
if this is happening right after eating, another strong possibility is a stricture. They happen to about 5% of gastric bypass patients, and you're in the right window of time for it (they almost always occur within 1-3 months post-op. They're very rare after that point). I had two of them - one at four weeks out and the other at around eight weeks out. They're an easy "fix". Regardless, let your clinic know what's going on. What you're experiencing is not normal. -

February 2022 Surgery Buddies

I am starting to go back to my old habit of grazing and other mindless eating habits. I don’t eat as much of course but the habit is not something I want to continue. It’s the festive season in my community so there’ve been more snacks around the house. Trying to curb that. My water intake hasn’t been great but my protein’s not too bad. I aim for 20-25g (about 800oz I think) Anything less and my lethargy will render me useless. I’m envious of all the weight loss you guys have been having. I’m only at -40lbs 10 weeks post surgery. I haven’t been moving as much though. I got covid 7 weeks post surgery. The recovery is slow and the fatigue is TERRIBLE. -

I am having a lot of pain in the shoulders & chest & collarbone. I have to lay on my back with a pillow under my butt and that seems to stop the pain going to my shoulders. They told me to not take my vitamins until the 2 week mark. Good luck too!! -
My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)

Day 2 is done, now on day 3. Hubby went to the store and bought me some V8 (I love the stuff), some sugar free iced tea, and some pho broth (my absolute FAVORITE). It's really helped. And tomorrow he's ordering chinese food for dinner and getting me wanton soup (my other favorite - but I won't be eating the wantons, sadly). He's really going above and beyond to help me get through this diet, and I just love him even more for it. Surgery is 5 days away. I got this!!! -

You are right this is hard! But worth the effort. My doc started me out sipping 1 ounce every 15 minutes, it seemed crazy at first but the small sips were comfortable. I am 3 weeks out (RNY) and drinking 52-64 oz a day comfortably now. I keep my drinks varied. Plain water is of course the best. As far as food goes, go slow. Introduce 1 food at a time 1-2 tbls. at a meal. I was on clear liquids for 2 Wk post op. Most of us went from clear liquids to purée. I am using a lil baby spoon and a lil seafood fork to keep my bites small. As for vitamins, they are very important post op because our nutrition is so limited. You can try a Bariatric High Protein Meal Replacement like Bariatric Advantage for a lil extra nutrition in your protein drinks. Talk to your doc or dietitian Re your challenges. This will pass. Keep trying, but go slow. -
It should be gone within a week at most. Some find it’s gone in less time. It just depends on how much they used & how you process it out of your body. Walk, heat compresses, long slow deep breaths, gasx, warm drinks can offer relief. I used to stretch my arms up & down to sort of try to pump the gas out 😁. Pain meds don’t seem to help the gas pain just the surgical pain.
-
I had hoped that by day 3 or 4 that pain would diminish, and for me, the first turning point was at about day 6 or 7. Til then I was a mess! I couldn't even inhale. (For me it was more at the incision sites than gas pains.) The very strong pain meds really helped, especially at night when I just needed to sleep. Don't expect it to be gone by day 4, but by next week this time you will be amazed at the difference!!!! I know that doesn't help now, but maybe emotionally it will help... Please make sure you have a really good pain reliever, like Tylenol with codeine (which my surgeon prescribed). it made all the difference the first few days. Best of luck, and please hang in there!

How to tell when you’re near full
Arabesque replied to Eshh's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You are only in the early stages. I was advised only to consume 1/4 - 1/3 cup of food from purée & slowly increase as I was able. It took me to 6 months to be able to eat about a cup. That’s fine if you can eat more but being able to doesn’t mean you should. Check with your surgeon &/or dietician for your portion size recommendations. Fluids & even purées tend to go through you more quickly so you rarely feel ‘full’ unless you eat/drink too quickly. When you get to solid foods you’ll start to feel full but full will be different to how it felt before. Being mindful when you eat & listening & looking for your physical cues will help you discover your signals. I often find it’s just a feeling not a physical signal I’ve had enough. On days I may be distracted & not as mindful about my eating I’ll start to get a heaviness in my chest. If I eat or drink too much too quickly I’ll feel my restriction (a rather painful tightness higher across the chest - i often thump my chest to try to ease it - doesn’t but …). It’s always better to eat until you’ve had enough & not until you are full. There’s a big difference between actually needing the next bite & just wanting it. Because it takes time for the full message to get through, by the time we feel full we’re over full. It’s one of the reasons we’re advised to eat slowly. Some days you’ll discover you can eat a little more or less than others which is why you need to learn your cues. It can take time to work it all out but you’ll get there. -

Congratulations! The walking is really the key to getting rid of the gas pains. Move around in bed as well. It normally takes up to day 3-4 to really feel like they are gone. Keep sipping and just know this will all be a distant memory soon. My doctor wanted us to do enough laps around the nurses station to equate a mile before going home. I thought she was crazy until I walked beyond that and really felt stronger and less gas pain every time. I slept in my recliner night one at home then I was able to use pillows for comfort. It was no time and I am sleeping on my belly and side. My RNY was 4-5. I feel amazing!! -
Vasovagal Syncope ( Fainting ) episode
PhantumBelly replied to catfish87's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Could really be a number of things for many of you here. I use an at home monitor and I was having low blood pressure 88/58 etc. .. For those who speculate orthostatic hypertension diagnosis can be confirmed with the tilt table test mentioned by a poster in this thread it could also be,for those with bypass, reactive hypoglycemia (occurs like 3 hours after eating something substantionally Carby) which u could use a cheap glucometer or borrow a friends during an episode to test if your blood sugar is low. For those who want a diagnosis after having low blood sugar it can be confirmed with lab test gtt (glucose tolerance test) extended 4 hours -
Tomorrow will be day 3 from for me. So I pray I wake up and the gas pains be gone.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
MistySkye replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m 11 months PO. Rarely had rice pre-surgery, so don’t eat it. Wasn’t really a pasta eater, except Mac & Cheese. I can have maybe 2-3 tablespoons tops. It sits heavy (plus I always eat my protein first, so not much room). I have it on occasion. Bread - I had Hot Cross Buns at Easter. No issues. I mainly eat around it (like a chicken burger…I’ll eat the protein maybe a bite or two of the bun) I love mission carb balance Street tacos. Perfect size. I do aim to keep my carb count under my protein number. -
I had surgery on April 18th. For me the gas pains lasted about 3 days. I needed help to get out of chairs for about a week. I still cant lay in my bed. I have been sleeping sitting up in a recliner and sofa.

Hey! I had my bypass Feb 14 this year. It's been pretty smooth sailing honestly up until the last week. Everytime I eat, about 15 minutes later I get extremely nauseous and even start retching. I threw up the other day actually after eating a protein yogurt but nothing came out. Just some red stuff from a pill I took. I'm not eating sugar or high carb foods. It's all stuff I ate before no problem. Liquids seem to be fine but I've had things like eggs, avocado, protein yogurt, cheese and cooked vegetables and wow do I feel like I need to throw up after. I eat slow and stick to small portions too. And then every now and then after eating I get incredibly fatigued and feel like I need to go to sleep. I've never had issues with insulin/pre diabetes or diabetes and feel like that's unlikely since I've been in weight loss mode and barely eating. It's getting difficult to reach my protein goal because I get so sick all of a sudden after eating. I really don't want to fall behind on things. Wondering if this is a stricture or normal? Am I becoming intolerant to certain foods or is the restriction just going strong? Feels so all of a sudden. Is there something I can do for a couple days to "reset" like only liquids or something? My insurance doesn’t cover WLS. I am making arrangements to be able to pay out of pocket and started the process at Duke in NC but then the surgeon said she wouldn’t do the surgery since my insurance wouldn’t cover the surgery due to risk of complication and high medical bills. Has anyone else experienced this??? I have an appointment with WakeMed BARIATRICS on May 10th, I explained to them what happened at Duke and they seemed surprised by it and said they except self pay. I am just terrified that I am going to be be crushed again for the 2nd time in 3 weeks and don’t know if I can take it. Any advice??? I have checked in to ACA insurances and multiple agents said none of the policies cover WLS.

I am happy to hear you finally have your surgery date. Don't stress over any of it and just follow what your doc suggests. My surgery and recovery have gone extremely well. I did hit a stall for a week in my weight loss but am doing all according to plan and it will turn around. I pray all will go as well for you.
