My time is finally here! I am heading off to the hospital in just 1 hour for my surgery! My name is Gayle and I am 21 year old female that is hypothyroid and weighs 400 lbs. I am still surprised with myself that I have made the decision to have this surgery, and it still doesn't feel real yet. I guess I am still afraid something will happen to make the surgery get canceled! I made it all the way through the liquid pre op diet, and that wasn't even that hard! My mouth right now is kind of dry, but I am not supposed to have anything to eat or drink after midnight so I guess I will just have to put up with that. I didn't sleep much, too much excitement. Actually haven't been sleeping well for about a week now! I am so ready for this to happen for me! I will post about my surgical experience later, but I just couldn't wait to post about this! Thanks everybody!

Before and After Stories?
KristieAtkinson replied to taurabird's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I started the 6 month diet process, exercise was a four letter word. I couldn't do a lot. Walking was a chore. I started at 338 (my highest weight was 354). Following the doctor supervised weight loss plan (about 1200 calories a day) & joined the Y. I could barely do Water aerobics when I started & only 3 minutes on the elliptical. I wouldn't have ran if I was chased by a masked man with a butcher knife. During that 6 months, I lost 50 pounds! On May 18th, my surgery weight was 288. I walked the halls every time I had to pee, which thanks to my IV, was once an hour. My doctor cleared me to go back to the gym at 7 weeks post op. I was shocked at how fatigued I felt & that I had to start all over. I was at the gym for 2 hours the day before my surgery. But it didn't take me nearly as long to get back up to speed. I'm now 11 months out & down 143 pounds total. Ive bounced up & down from 195-205 for THREE months. The scale seems like its going to start moving again soon! I'm 195 pounds right now, from a size 30/32 tops & jeans to a size MD/LG & 11/12 jeans. . I'm 5'7. My goal weight is 160. I'm having a corset trunkplasty on May 28th which is estimated to take off 15-18 pounds of skin & fat in my stomach. The surgeon took a girl similar height & weight loss to mine from a 12/14 to a 6/8 after the surgery. I started saving my taxes & anything I could scrimp together when I started this whole process cause I knew I was going to have stomach skin issues. Now I can hit the elliptical for an hour to an hour & a half at a time. I lift weight, low weight lots of repetition to sculpt & not bulk. I can RUN! On purpose! I can run a straight 11 minute mile, walk 3 minutes, run another mile, walk 3 more, run again. That's 3 miles baby! I'm training for my first 5K. I plan to run the entire thing. I love Zumba & spinning and can do the entire 1 hour class without issues. This has been the hardest change I've ever made but so worth it! Good luck to all you newbies, you CAN do this! (If curious about my exercise or food at a year out, feel free to add me on MyFitnessPal, my diary is open. User name: KristieAtkinson) Kristie -
I would agree that an eight week stall at five months out would be a good reason to contact your medical team. And though it sounds like a cliché, weight loss or gain is usually directly related to calorie intake. Are you logging your food? If not, My Fitness Pal is a fantastic app that is free and highly recommended by many (myself included). It's easy to use and has a huge food database that has just about anything you can imagine. It also has a bar code scanner that makes scanning in packaged foods a snap. Research has repeatedly shown that folks who log their food are more successful at losing weight and at maintaining their goal weight. Stay focused on following the protocol as closely as you possibly can, stay active, and stay away from the scales for at least a week and two would be even better. You're gonna love the new you!!

You can add water in MFP just like you would add food. When you select "Water - Municipal", it comes up as one cup or 8oz. All you have to do is tap "Number of Servings" and select whatever amount you want. So to put in 1oz, just select "1/8" as the serving size, 2oz would be "1/4" etc. If you add one oz of water to your "Frequent" list, then all you have to do is select it and change the serving size to however many oz you want to add. Sounds complicated when you explain it in words but actually doing it takes about 15 seconds! I'm not sure what protein total you're looking for but MFP totals protein (and much more) on a daily basis - tap Home > Daily. For example, I know that I had 122g of protein yesterday, 101 the day before, etc. It also shows weekly protein totals - tap Home > Weekly > tap the center button on the upper right side of the screen. For example I know that I've had 325g of protein for the first three days of this week, 632g for the entire week of Jun 17th, etc. And again, it also shows the same daily and weekly numbers for Fat, Cholesterol, Sodium, Potassium, Carbs, Vitamins A and C, Calcium and Iron. It also shows what your goal numbers for each of those and how much you are under/over your goal. And you have control over your "goals" by the settings you choose. Very powerful app!!

Weight loss question...
NJVSTuser replied to kledislynn's mommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not sure about the fingers as don't wear rings but have had to tighten my watch strap about three extra holes since the surgery, my arms are much thinner for sure. Seemed to be the first thing to slim down as I lost weight. -
Hunger/Stall
BrookeTiffani replied to Benjamin Prez's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm totally in the same mindset. Feel like surgery was a failure. I am 3 weeks post op today. Scale hasn't budged in a whole week. I think inches have but haven't measured. Feel like I'm eating to much through the day or doing something wrong I am on my soft foods stage in my diet so I'm eating pretty well anything that's not to hard or hard to digest. Blah.. I also feel like when I say I've only lost 33 lbs since my pre op diet to now it seems so minuscule. Even though it's a good amount and I didn't gain my weight overnight. I feel like I'm expecting it to be gone over night. oh how I feel crazy. Sent from my SGH-I317M using the BariatricPal App Yup. that's exactly how I feel too. It's like the progress we have made is amazing but then it stops suddenly and you feel like you won't ever pick back up again. I didn't think about inches.. It's weird I stopped losing but clothes still felt looser than they had. Maybe I can have them check inches next time I go too. I also feel like I am eating too much during the day too. I felt like I was stuffing myself until I got my food scale and have been able to track it. and what feels like a lot now really isn't. I was so shocked to see 3 oz made me feel like I was pushing it. Yup. that's exactly how I feel too. Hunger feelings are normal in the early weeks because a swollen stomach, your stomach healing and the excess acid your stomach is making. Your stomach is used to making enough acid for a much bigger stomach. All those things will mimic hunger. Just make sure you take your antacids daily as your surgeon recommends. My hunger dropped off on day 16 or 17, some take much longer before it drops off, and others quicker. Just make sure you get your protein and Water levels in, and things will improve. Good luck!

This may be TMI but...

I would wait a few weeks before taking that Vitamin... ask your doctor, it seems too soon. -
I had my gastric bypass on March 22nd. The surgeons and other people say I should be re-introducing soft foods into my system. Some days I can eat pudding Jello yogurt....and some days even broiled/grilled chicken. However for like 2-3 days I haven't been able to eat anything. I'm barely even drinking Water. I force myself to so as not to become dehydrated. Before the surgery, I was on a partial liquid diet and I drank glucose controlled Boost and Glucerna shakes. Do y'all think it would be ok for me to resume drinking them just to get some type of nutrients in my system? Even the Protein shakes come back up sometimes and the water based ones are just gross. I went from weight 403 to 377 in 3 weeks. I don't see a difference but I feel it in the way my clothes fit

A buddy/ mentor sounds great to me...
natalie_christin posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can use all the support I can get.. Lol My surgery has been approved by the insurance… The tentative date that I have right now is for the 17th. I'm looking forward to it… I admit though I'm a bit scared and anxious just dealing with the idea of having surgery again but the procedure doesn't take that Long… It's all in the healing in the aftermath. Does anybody want to be on a liquid/broth diet with me for the three weeks after surgery? The diet isn't worrisome to me. It is just having yet another surgery. I have had approximately 20 now... I have my father as support... My husband walked out on me a month ago... So, that is. Difficult, but I am working on it and through it. One step at a time and one day at a time. Blessings, Nat -
I had my surgery on 2/19/14. I lost 10 lbs before surgery and only 9 after. I've been at the same weight for five days. I'm walking 5 days a week and I'm getting pretty much all my protein and water. Did anyone else stall that quick?

I was a band went to sleeve now getting bypass
pinklove posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Got my band in 2009. It never really worked kept getting unfilled because of issues finally it was discovered the band had dilated my esophagus so I was revised to the sleeve. The sleeve was great in the beginning then in month 3 bad reflux throwing up at night on three different meds for it. Got dilated four times had the bravo test and other so now I have to do bypass. I didn't choose bypass in the beginning because of the rearranging I am nervous and scared but I can't live like this with the reflux I also don't want to lose too much more weight. I went from a size 18 to a 10. I lost nearly 60 pounds and I work out so I've lost more inches. Anyone else in my boat any stories. To share. My surgery is in two weeks it's being done as medically necessary. I have blue cross federal basic -
@InnerSurferGirl I haven't been regular since I got sick so that might be what's causing my weight. I'm going to ask my doctor what I should do since I haven't gone number 2 in about a week. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My Journey began Sept. 28th, 2016

Things to pay attention to: - Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), this is the amount of calories your body needs in a day just to exist (think in a coma, alive but not moving). BMR drops as we lose weight and as we get older. So it's something that should be calculated and monitored with WLS. https://www.active.com/fitness/calculators/bmr - Your water intake, you stated that you try to hit your protein targets, which is great, but your body just cannot break down fat if there isn't enough water. - 3.5 miles 2x a week isn't near enough. The minimum basic goal is 30 mins of targeted physical activity EVERY DAY, for WLS, it really should be 60+. Also, running is great, but running will **ONLY** lean out muscle, if you want to burn more fat minute to minute, you need to be building muscle mass. - Without seeing (or being a doctor specifying in plastics) It's entirely possible to have 20 lbs of excess skin - Have you had your body fat measured? I'd be interested to see what your lean mass to fat mass numbers are. I'm 5'9 currently at 258.9, 37.2% body fat, My scale calculates that I have 162.7 lbs of lean muscle and 96.2 lbs of fat. I'm shooting for 200 lbs, so if I do make it to 200, I'll still have 37.3 lbs of fat that *could* be worked off if I really wanted to, this doesn't count skin weight though. If you are really stuck/stalled and frustrated, try re-doing the pre-surgical diet to "reset" things. I also highly suggest starting to track your intake and burn again, if you are burning more than you are taking in, you *WILL* lose weight.

I doubt seriously you ate enough to gain that amount of weight in one week. It could be Water retention, constipation, or something else. Not knowing what your illness is, if you are concerned, you may want to run this by your doctor.
-
Yeah, I'd head over to the hospital. You might have pneumonia. That's how mine started - fever and shaking/chills. I had no respiratory symptoms until a week after the fever started.

What Kim said. It does get easier. When I gave up smoking years ago the first 3 days were pretty miserable. You'll get over that hump and it won't be so bad. It was the same with the liquid diet. Hey...at least you get a bar! I would have cut someone for a packet of saltines after the first week. You got this!

Today was my first post- up from surgery 12 days ago. I still can not walk or stand for long. No pain just winded every time I try walk, I can't even stand to take a shower or even brush my teeth. The Doctor sent me straight to the ER. I had a Cat Scan and X-ray. All good. No blood clots. All good, but why am I soooo out of breath? They gave no answers. I have a follow up appointment with my Dr. at end of week. Anyone have this happen to them?

Yes I did last week when I had the flu. If you think this has something to do with your band surgery call your doctor. Hope you feel better.
