  1. hi carbgrl if i had a bad toothache, went to the dentist, and he kind of screwed up the filling - when it got worse, i wouldn't go back for the filling to be fixed by the same dentist.. How bout you??? kathy 12/15/11 btw - i never had to have a lapband/sleeve revision
  2. Ask your surgeon for his practice's stats. What I was told is that the general info out there is that revisions don't lose as well. The theory is that they have become accustomed to feeling overful and are more likely to stretch the pouch. My surgeon's office is however reporting similiar/same results for revisions as for "virgin" sleevers. I think it is because they focus heavily on education and follow up, but that is just a theory.
  3. I am sorry I didn't see this earlier. My lap band removal was approved w/my revision to RNY bypass being denied. Long story, but the insurance clerk at doc's drug out the process...all I needed according to my insurance was peer to peer review (my treating doctor to insurance doctor) to discuss reason for needing the revision surgery. Anthem bc/bs told me if I were to appeal first, I would give up my option for the peer to peer review. I called my doc office and they scheduled a review time (by phone). I got my approval letter that week! didn't even do an appeal letter. (now my dr office wants both approvals to be put on one letter, so I am waiting again for that). But...maybe a peer to peer review will help the insurance company to understand you are not doing this for weight loss but the effects of the GERD from the original surgery. Good Luck.
  4. I have read several comments that revision patients don't lose as fast as "virgins". Why is that? I am back at my pre and starting weight, so it's not like I only have a little to lose.....
  5. Ok, so I received the Lapband 12/31/2009 paid by BCBS. Now that I am with a different company and have AETNA POS II- will I have a chance of getting them to pay for the revision to the sleeve? I had my consultation and the insurance coordinator advised me that she will need me to have a sleep study (which I did last night) and the next 3 months to meet with a nutritionist. She also advised me that she is requesting my weight history from my last surgeon. Do I have a good chance of getting an approval? Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks in advance for any comments or feedback.

Revision- Aetna Did Not Pay For Lapband

Are u having any problems with your Lapband ? I read some where in Aetna policy about revising to the sleeve and if I'm not mistaking it said if it was medically necessary ... You should read aetna policy it online but u no our employer pick there on stuff that they want us to be covered for
  7. I am scheduled December 12th to have my lap band removed and revision to RNY. I leave in May for Europe for wine cruise in Bordeaux France and then an additional 3 weeks in Spain and Portugal. I would like to enjoy some wine and tastes of on the various foods we will be served. I will be traveling with 2 other couples. I need help understanding where I will be in 6 months. Can I eat and drink just about anything within the small servings guidelines? Being able to keep up with the other couples and being sick and tired of being so heavy and out of shape is my driving me to do this now. The other issue I have is that my mom is being referred to hospice. She is 95 and not sure if she has days or weeks left. How long will it take me to recover from surgery so I can get back to visiting her. She lives near me. Thanks in advance for any comments.
  8. Below is a repost about me!! I'm glad this group is available for us!!! Hey Guys! I am a 36 year old teacher and doctoral student from Chicago.. I have been researching WLS for a few years now. Until recently, I never took the next step to meet w/ a WL specialist and surgeon... I'm in my 2nd month of a 6 month pre-approval process.. I was dead set on the band, even w/ the failure percentage and probability of revision and port problems.. Yesterday, I met w/ my surgeon Dr. Gerald Cahill and he gave a thorough explanation of why I am a prime candidate for the sleeve.... I'm still apprehensive, but upon perusing the board, I'm encouraged by the success stories and the support provided here... I am so SCARED to share this news w/ my family... a little over 7 years ago, my 28 yo cousin died from complications of gastric bypass, because of this they are not very open to WLS...Also, because I am active, confident and successful... my friends and fam don't think I need WLS... I've been losing weight fairly steadily, but I aggravated an old back injury and can't workout like I need to.. and for the past 2 months, I've not be eating properly and essentially sending my body into starvation mode and an imbalance in my blood sugar..... I think I just got disgusted w/ my weight and kind of said.. whatever!!.. I'm much better now and excited to start focusing on me and what I know I need for my life... How did you tell your loved ones?? Or should I wait until after the surgery to tell them??? I'm willing to accept all advice, input, etc.... I'm going to do it...I want my life back!!!!
  9. My LapBand was removed in June/2018 and my stomach was not healthy enough to do the sleeve. Inflammation, erosion and very thinned walls. The next day i was rushed back to the hospital and sent back into emergency surgery because a hole opened where the buckle had been. A month recovery and a couple months of trying to get back into my routine. I am working towards getting the sleeve again. I had a Endoscopy that went very well except for seeing some food particles in my stomach. So my surgeon wants to do a Gastric Emptying study before he agrees to do the sleeve. I'm excited and nervous but just working hard day by day to stay on track. No matter what his decision ends up being i am just ready to be at a healthy weight. Anyone else have such a hard time with the revision ?

    Taste Change?

Most of the changes for me have been for the better. The only negative I have experienced so far is that my favorite protein shake pre-op now tastes TERRIBLE! So I have 2 pounds of it sitting in my pantry just praying it will taste good soon. Aside from that, everything tastes so much better, it's amazing. Each meal seems better than the last, which is a nice change since before I just kind of ate to live and nothing really wowed me. I've not really moved myself to full meats since my revision, so I'm not sure how I will tolerate everything well yet, but we shall see!
  11. I don't know what to do. I had a band revision surgery on Friday (old band removed and new one put in due to slip.) I tried to eat some oatmeal for dinner and haven't been able to keep anything down since. I tried to sip on hot water but that just came right back up. I drifted off to sleep but woke up coughing/chocking. I tried to call my doc and the after services people said they would page him. That was almost an hour ago. I'm afraid if I go to the ER, they won't know what to do for me. Is anyone awake? Any suggestions? Thanks, Angie
  12. Hello everyone! I am so glad I have found this place. I have been having so many questions about my revision and how other people have dealt with their band to sleeve. Just to give you a little bit of background. I was originally banded back in 2004, I had a slip of my band in late 2005. Got my slip fixed and my band replaced and then another slip in 2007. I have been living with a slipped band for the last 3 years due to my insurance refusing to cover any surgeries related to WLS. I finally switched insurance and have been hot on the trail to get my band taken out and get my sleeve. I am now scheduled to get my band removed on Sept. 1st and get sleeved at the same time. One of my main concerns is that when I met with the doctor originally he was stating that I would need to have my band removed if I wanted my band fixed due to inflammation and dilation of my esophagus. Why now would he be okay to remove the band and do a sleeve? Have any of you had this issue or ran into any of this? I'm already nervous about the surgery and I am starting my pre-op diet tomorrow. Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch! -Jen

    Large port lump

I had my surgery 11 months ago and the thing I hated afterwards was the lump - I was very upset about it - my scar was very deep and there was sort of a pooch like the skin wasn't pulled tight enough - In February I had a mini-arm lift and at the same time the PS revised the scar - the port is still obvious by sticking up where I can see it and feel it but the scar is straighter and not as jagged and looks much better so the port sticking out doesn't bother me as much - to be honest I loved the band as far as helping me not overeat but hated it because of the lump. I think eventually I will have the band and port removed because if I get to my goal weight it will stick out even more and it sort of creeps me out.
  14. I've had a crazy year. August 1, 2012 I was getting my band removed with revision to RNY but woke up with no RNY. Then had 6 months to wait til my RNY. As of today I'm 7 months post-op, 57 pounds down, 44 pounds to a healthy weight. It's been one heck of a journey dealing with the highs and lows of not getting the surgery and being frustrated waiting...so, I just wanted to say thank you to all those who have replied when I've asked questions or responded when I whine. My friends, family, and coworkers are awesome....but they just don't understand! You guys are my weight loss family,my friends, my cheerleaders. Thank you all so much for the support you've given me the last 13 months. We really are all rock stars for doing what we're doing! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 199

    Revision surgery

I am having a revision 11-5 due to the opening between my stomach and intestines being way too big. My pouch is still fairly small but Things are passing through my stomach quickly. I have gained about 40lbs. How was recovery for everyone? I’m having the usual pre-surgery anxiety. Thanks, Mary

    Sleeve revision

On the pre-op diet front, that depends upon the surgeon - many of us do no diet at all other than the day before to empty the GI tract. If you are talking to the same surgeon who did your original surgery, and he normally imposes such diets then you will likely be told to do it again, though one can make a good case that since you are at a reasonable goal weight you don't need to "shrink the liver", assuming that is the rationale that they use for the diet. All you can do is ask. When contemplating a revision, it is always a good idea to get a second (or even third) opinion, as these surgeries are often more complex and their causes more variable. If the cause is a shaping or other structural issue with your sleeve (which can have a big influence on GERD problems) then it may be better to correct the problem with the sleeve rather than replace it. As the sleeve is still relatively new to most bariatric surgeons, they may not really know how to correct a problem with a sleeve and prefer to stick within their comfort zone by converting it to a bypass, which they tend to know very well. A good starting place to look for second opinions on something like this is in the DS community - look for a surgeon who is experienced with the DS, since as that uses the sleeve as its basis, they tend to be more experienced with them than most, and tend to be more comfortable in correcting them when needed. The practice that did my sleeve had been doing them for around twenty years, and that was seven years ago - most bariatric practices at that time had only been doing them for a year or two at best.
  17. I had VSG in Aug 2017. Dr says I’ll need to have revision due to acid reflux/Barrett’s, etc......Does anyone know what the preop for revision surgery is? Do you still have to do 2 week liquid, etc.....? Just gathering info to make an informed decision. Thx!

    Sleeve revision

This is going to depend on your surgeon (and maybe insurance) but, my revision from Band to Bypass required a minimum 2 week pre-op diet.

    Liquid Diet???

I too am 5 yrs out. I've had my band revised in 9/2011. I've gained back 50lbs since all my problems in the last 2yrs. It sucks. I don't have good restriction still. I have 7.4 cc. VERY FRUSTRATING. It's also frustrating to hear from my doc that they are finding that 4-5yrs out is when they (not just my doc) are finding people have issues. :-(

    MGB or RNY?

I had MGB in Canada in Sept/17. I was told that it was a less invasive surgery than RNY (one anastomosis vs 2) with fewer surgical complications, but similar outcomes to RNY. I had mine as a revision surgery 9 months after having my Lap-band removed. I lost steady in the first 3-4 months, but then slowed due to issues with hypoglycemia related to late dumping syndrome (blood sugar was spiking immediately after eating any carbs then dropping rapidly. Too much insulin production = poor weight loss.) Now that I'm getting this under control with medication, I'm losing again (only 14 pounds from goal). However, taking into account these complications, if I had to do it all over again, I think I would have gotten the sleeve.
  21. Question for anyone with sleeve to mgb revision: Did you taste buds change again after revision? Did you go through food phases at same rate? Liquid to soft to solids, etc? Like after sleeve it took 6 months before I could eat lettuce again. Should I expect same? Thanks
  22. I'm almost 2 months post op revision to the sleeve. I do not get that stuck feeling. I get more of the full feeling and a hiccup. I do not over eat or even try. I have read ppl on here say they can eat and eat. I have no desire to even try. I prob eat 1/2 cup at most.

Can you compare restriction band to sleeve?

I am 11 weeks post-op. I remember that stuck feeling with the band. It made me stop eating immediately and after suffering for a bit I would usually go throw up and meal time would be over. I also remember how good it felt if the stuck food actually passed through. It was like total relief. All of that is gone. It does not happen anymore. I also don't feel the port anymore in my abdomen. I had the band for 10 years so I was used to all of those feelings that come with the band. It is really nice having it out of me. I hated that lump in my stomach and explaining it to doctors that were examining me for something unrelated to it. I also want to say that it worked for me for 8 years perfectly. I lost 100 lbs with it in a years time and maintained that for 7 years. I didn't have the problems that lots of other banders have had. I started gaining weight about 2 years ago and I noticed that I could eat alot more. I developed problems that I have talked about in my profile section under my story if you care to read it there. So, I had the sleeve revision in March. It was painful for me. I was hurting bad for about a week. Now that the incisions have healed and my stomach is far along with the healing process, I have become very satisfied with it. It was about 4 weeks post-op and I was into the solid foods portion of the plan that I noticed "restriction" for the first time. It was painful to me. This is not the stuck feeling of restriction from the band, it is a painful feeling from your stomach saying "No More Room". I stopped eating right then and after about 30 minutes it passed. My stomach was still healing and I pushed it too far with food. I then became more diligent with my portion control. I am now 11 weeks post-op and I do not feel any pain at all. I feel full. It is a full feeling that I used to get way before all of this. The problem is that in my head I can see that I have not eaten very much and I think that I should eat more, but my stomach won't let me. When my band failed I was able to eat much more, and I did, and I regained the weight. Now I have to retrain my head again to think that I have eaten enough. I eat less than my 3 year old foster daughter. She thinks it's funny because we eat from the same kind of plate. One of those little plastic child plates that are sectioned off into small portions like a tv dinner tray. She gets a kick out of watching daddy eat using her pink kids plate. The only difference is that she gets dessert after dinner and I don't because I am full and can't eat anymore. Good luck to you.
  24. I am beyond miserable! The band was the worst thing I ever did to myself!

Bypass or Duodenal Switch or SIPS

Hey mountaingirl! I am a RNY patient looking for a revision due to weight regain. I have decided on SADI. I think that is the same thing as the SIPS. It is the option that my doctor recommends and I have read some research that it is a better option for RNY patients because it has proven to give better initial weightloss. Bypass does give you restriction but you can eat your way out of it. I think in your situation any of these options would be a good call accept I believe the DS requires more vigilant attention to vitamins and supplements. I found it hard to find revision patients on forums who could give me much information. I suggest you do some research on the web and maybe at a college library on the revision surgeries. Good Luck!
