  1. I had my gastric bypass surgery on January 4th and I’ve just transitioned to full liquids. I’m sitting here sipping my soup, and my NUT said that I would only be able to handle 4oz or so of any food, but I’m not feeling full at all. I’m super worried about like, popping my staples or something! EDIT: I made myself stop just because I was concerned, but what is normal?
  2. I had battled alcohol problems long before WLS also due to PTSD and physical ailments. After WLS I gave up alcohol for a year and a half, but due to a series of crises this year, I began to "drink-medicate" again -- just to escape the terrible feelings of stress, anxiety, fear, and sadness. "It's only a couple of glasses," I'd reason wrongly. But I had two binge drinking episodes after sudden crises that finally provoked me to give up alcohol altogether. The first caused me to end up in urgent care, with elevated liver enzymes. The second caused me to fall and get a gash across my forehead. Because I am an atheist, I wouldn't consider AA. But I was directed to an amazing book called "Alcohol Explained: Understand Why You Drink and How to Stop" by William Porter. All I can say is it is absolutely incredible and since I finished the book, I haven't touched alcohol and don't intend to again. Porter explains what really happens when we drink: the wonderful calming and relief from worries... followed hours later by an increase in anxiety, depression, and hangovers as our brains readjust to the alcohol (which is a toxin). So the vicious cycle begins -- drink to stop the bad feelings... the bad feelings get worse after the drink effects go away... requiring us to drink again... etc. And there's so much more to it, too. Porter does not believe that alcoholism is a disease (the AA model does) but it is a behavior that can be changed through learning, reframing, and changing behaviors. I can't recommend this book enough. Lastly, something I should have been thinking about all this time... Before WLS, my surgeon told me he had only had one patient die after the surgery. The man binge-drank a few times over a three month period and succumbed from alcohol poisoning. His new body couldn't handle the volume of alcohol he used to drink prior to the surgery. We never think such a thing could happen to us but... now I know.
  3. @MelanatedQueen It's totally the three-week stall. Your body is rebalancing its fluid levels and stuff. While there's some variation (hello, hormones...), generally the rule is CICO (calories in calories out). If you're eating 500 cal a day, there is no way you're not going to lose weight. Even if you're very petite, your body requires a certain number of calories just to exist, and 500 is below that number. If you get through another three weeks without moving, talk to your surgeon, but nearly everyone breaks that stall in a week or two.

I don't thi!k you should get discouraged just yet. Like others mentioned speak to your medical team about the concerns you're having. I didn't have much side effects of the surgery but 1st month was definitely difficult in terms of energy. I didn't even have energy to walk few mins on a treadmill which has gotten so much better now 6 weeks post-Op. Now I can easily do 30 to 35 mins. Even now though, there are some days which are easily fatigued than others. I am sure as time passes, it'll go away too. Plus as you progress, you should be able to tolerate various foods. I have tried other foods, and I haven't gotten dumping yet. So I am sure down the line, we should be able to enjoy our favorites, ofc in limit. As for gross tasting protein, try other brands. And even if those don't work, try to get protein from wholesome foods. On my program, we aren't allowed protein powders or any processed protein. We are told to consume protein from food. I am also vegetarian, so my options are mostly dairy products. And I still make my goal of 70 to 80 grams of protein. So protein powders aren't the only means. Try Greek yogurt or even better *ice landing yogurt*. Both easily available at grocery stores. Ice landing yogurt has 15 grams of protein on 0.5 cup. I can have about 1 cup a day (split) and easy 30 grams in. Then therea are various cheeses, cottage cheese, milk, lentils, beans etc. So many options out there for protein alternative. Good Luck with your journey.

    Reverse gastric bypass

they usually don't do reversals unless you're having serious medical issues that can't be resolved any other way. talk to your surgeon. They may be able to suggest or prescribe things that help. Plus like others have said, you're still very early out. A lot of this will clear up in the near future. The first few weeks can be tough, but then it gets a lot easier. I honestly don't notice a difference anymore - other than my stomach doesn't hold nearly as much food as it used to.
  6. Have you contacted your team. I don’t think new pain that is so severe you can’t stand up at 13 weeks out is very common. They should have someone after hours to advise you.
  7. Hi, im 13 weeks post op and having severe back, coccyx and stomach pain. I’ve tried meds etc and checking what I’m eating but it won’t go. The stomach pain is uncomfortable and painful where I can’t even stand. Has anyone else had this at all? a

    1 month post-Op work out/Exercise?

Eh, as much or little as I felt like, really. I knew if I made it too 'perfect' and too strict I wouldn't do it. I just promised myself: I will walk. 3 times a week. Sometimes with a friend, making it a long frosty trip around the lakes; about 2 hours with bench breaks, looking at the dumb ducks. Sometimes, I'd walk 10 blocks out and 10 blocks back at 9.50pm after a long day at work, 20 minutes or so. I knew I needed positive experiences, and my competitive gene would carry me the rest of the way. Sometimes, I walked more days in a week. Because it wasn't a sad chore, it was something I wanted and could manage. It doesn't matter how fast you walk or run for that matter, all that matters for calories is distance. Actually, the only thing that really matters is you do it. Just walk. Get out there. Promise yourself you make it a short one when it's a rainy day, and that you'll make it a longer one when the sun is shining. Bring people along; a podcast; bread crumbs for the dumb ducks
  9. I'll be 6 weeks this Tuesday and I have also only lost about 18 pounds 😂 I totally understand what you mean, it can get to you when scale simply doesn't wanna co-operate. Plus I also have PCOS, so could be why I am one of the slow losers. But give it some time and see how it goes.
  10. I thought I wanted gastric bypass but two of my healthcare providers convinced me to do the "less radical" thing of sleeve surgery instead. I was a 40 BMI, not huge but still morbidly obese but not too many comorbidities to be concerning. I had the sleeve and I have no regrets. It works! It's a tool - the work of eating right was still up to me. Three years post-op it still works for me and keeps me from overeating. Either surgery is good and ultimately it's up to you.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I had the loop DS 7 weeks ago and have lost 33 lbs (83 total). My three week stall ended up lasting a while 3 weeks. 😅 I am really happy with my progress. I feel well. My face looks like me again, and I keep sitting awkwardly on my now saggy stomach. I can still only eat 1.5oz at a meal and am not hitting any goals but the surgeon is happy with my progress.

eholmes89 I had the same surgeon and nurse!!!! Same hospital. Now 3 weeks and 1 day post op. How are you doing? I’m struggling with liquids only and puréed/mashed. I want real food! X

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

I did, because it was one of the few approved foods that tasted good to me. Even now, at 9 weeks, I still eat them with a laughing cow piece melted in a serving…. What’s weird is that when I hit a stall for a week, a couple of servings of potatoes kicks it back into gear. I have no idea why, but it does

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

What surgery did you have? I had DS and I’m a little more than a month out. I was very close to same starting weight as you on surgery day. I lost a significant amount for my first week follow up, but it doesn’t seem to be super noticeable, so I’m losing motivation. I’ve a long-time scale phobia, so I’m not really checking. I don’t go back to my surgeon for a follow-up until March, but I feel like I’m maybe gaining, not losing. I tolerate everything. Over the holidays I even had things I shouldn’t. Nothing seems to kick back. I’m a little concerned, actually. I feel like I can eat way more than I’m supposed to be able to eat as well. Can anyone drink a whole premier protein shake at a sitting? Because I’ve been able to since I started full liquids, and it’s freaking me out. You should be really really proud of yourself, Tristen! Sticking to the plan is super tough, and you are doing great! Don’t lose focus!

I used Ramsey Healthcare at the Woodlands in Kettering. My surgeon was Mr Sutton and bariatric nurse was Emma. They were and are an amazing team. Yes I paid a premium, but I have so much after care and lifetime support. I interviewed 3 different surgeons across the country before I made my decision and I am glad I chose him. Within 6 weeks of first consultation I was in and having my surgery. i had my surgery in 13th July, I weighed 15 stone. I now weight 9 stone 10. I have had no complications at all! I used a bank loan to fund this as the interest rate was more favourable. It did cost me £10k but it’s the best money I have ever spent! i also have an on hand dietician and an app which has lifetime support and contact with a range of professionals good luck in your journey!! 😊

I used Nuffield through a company called Healthier Weight that was recommended by my surgeon, this was after being told in July that the NHS waiting list was at least three years and I decided that was too long to wait to get my life back together. My operation was in November so I didn't have long to wait in the grand scheme of things and I can't fault any of the care I have received.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Oh it's hard enough without thyroid issues. I think you're doing brilliantly but I know it's you who has to be happy. 28lbs in 6 weeks is amazing. January is going to be a good month for losses, I can feel it!

Yeh I get the "down feeling" when scale doesn't move after weeks. But hoping it starts becoming from friendlier with us 😂😂 Hang it there and hopefully we shall make it too.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I haven't been keeping track of dates and weight, but I feel like a slow loser too. No surprise as I don't have a thyroid. I'm in my 5th week and hitting a stall. I was on the pre-op diet for a week before surgery and have lost a total of 28 lbs. I am so very happy because I can SEE and FEEL the difference, but the number of pounds and this current stall do kind of get me down a little bit.
  21. Hi! I am almost a week post op VSG and have extreme nausea! I can’t even stomach water or my Powerade zero. I have been forcing myself to drink my 2 Fairlife shakes to get my 60 grams of protein in but that’s all the intake I can tolerate. I might be able to get 20-30 ounces of other fluid down during the day. I sip slowly like I’m supposed to, sit up when I’m drinking and I’m even taking Zofran once to twice a day but it gives me a terrible headache. Did anyone else have this issue and any advice? And please tell me it goes away soon!
  22. I am three years out I also gain weight. After my poppa passed away it was 2 years on new years eve .and I was so depressed about it and started gaining weight. Trying to get my on track and now my thyroid is off the charts and I am so mad at myself about it. Sent from my SM-T307U using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. Hello all! I had the SADI-S on July 24, 2020. I weighed 393 pounds at my highest and 368 on the day of surgery. I am so excited because today I finally made it to onederland! When I started out I was hoping to get at least down to 200 pounds. I am so happy to be officially under that number now and I hope to go even lower. My weight has slowed down a lot in the last few months and sometimes it's hard to stay motivated but I am not giving up! My wonderful, supportive husband gave me the shirt I'm wearing in this pic to celebrate. It came last week and he wouldn't let me open it and I thought it was something for the anniversary of the day we met, which also happens to be 18 years ago today. I was so surprised by the shirt. Anyway. I just wanted to share because I am so excited and had to tell someone who understands. [emoji4] Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I am right there with ya. Slow loser I think so too 🥲 Last 4 weeks and I have lost only about 6 pounds. There was ofc 2 or 3 weeks of stall but even now my scale isn't budging much. It can get very frustrating and disappointing when it's only the beginning of the 2nd month. Le sigh, hope by the end of the month I can at least lose 10 pounds in total for this month, otherwise it would be highly disappointing 😭😭😭
  25. I hate to say it but if that is where they stand right now you may not be able to get them on board within a week. I am not sure whether I would even continue to try if I were you. I know that their concern is coming from a genuine place but their expression is not rational or productive. And it’s not okay! My mom has pulled similar stuff with me and it has taken years in therapy to be able to set boundaries with her. Assuming you are an adult you need to be able to make your own decisions free from guilt and manipulation but a change like that will not happen overnight. This surgery is a big decision and it’s one that you should make for you. You don’t need their approval. If you need support, you have found a great source of it right here.
