    Delayed Restriction?

I really needed to read the exchanges regarding this subject today and I'm so glad I did. It sounds like I am not alone. I had my band implanted on May 20. I had my first fill of 2 cc added to my 10 oz. band on June 27. I don't feel hungry for meals or in-between meals, but I seem to have little to no restriction for eating things that I was hoping for. The thing that is very discouraging is that I have not lost any weight since my fill. I'm still at 261. I seem to be a plateau of some kind. I am grateful for this because I normally go UP and UP with my weight. I have lost 26 pounds so far but I'm anxious to lose more. I've been the same weight for 3 weeks. I have another fill in a few weeks and I hope that will give me more restriction. I want to be restricted because I eat so much less and it scares me. I don't return to the insanity of gaining/losing, etc. Ths concept that the restriction "kicks in" is very interesting to me. My doctor said after my first fill to go on liquids for 24 hours (Soup, Protein drinks) which I did but after the 24 hours passed, I realized I could eat almost anything. I am still on track in many ways (eating good things and exercising) but I wonder if this restriction will kick in soon or I will have to have several fills before the restriction takes effect. I encourage others that are ahead of me to write in their experience regarding this subject of feeling restricted with foods and fills.

    Delayed Restriction?

This thread helped me! I had my 1st fill yesterday (3.5cc), and I was starving last night and today so I ate some mushies even though I am still supposed to be on liquids. I get full quickly, then hungry fast again. I of course called the nurse, and she said that I was a few fills away from the "real deal" in my 10cc band. She also said I probably would not stay full on three meals and would need to add some protein shakes or snacks. I do wish they would tell you this at the time of the fill, but I guess they do not want to open the door to any extra eating. Reading this made me think maybe something will "kick in" this weekend and I will not be ravenous.

    Three months out...

I lost 33 pounds since may 2008 and 11 pounds since surgery june 30th but im stuck on 237 for about 2 weeks got my first fill yesterday 2.5 cc in 8 cc band
  4. I was getting my first fill 6 weeks post-surgery. The doctor said he was giving me a 1.5 fill. I was lying on the table and he had me sit partially up a few time to help him find my port. He then inserted the needle. It was in there quite a while and burned a little bit. He then withdrew it and then reinserted in and said something like “that’s it.” It burned a bit again. Then I felt liquid oozing on me and the doctor said “Don’t worry, it is not coming from you. I just had extra liquid.” The needle felt like it was still in me when this happened. After I saw the needle was out, I asked if any liquid got into me and he said “yes, I just had extra liquid.” Afterwards, I asked him about the post-fill diet instructions. He started handing me written instructions, then stopped and started to say something, then he said “never mind” and to follow the instructions and give it at least two weeks to see if I feel a difference. It seemed like he wanted to tell me something and then changed his mind. I am not too confident, that I got a fill. I think maybe the liquid never got into me and was just spilled on my skin. Maybe he was going to tell me that and then changed his mind. I don’t feel any differently although it is only 2 days after the “fill.” Am I just being neurotic? I asked the doctor once if I got a fill, I don't want to ask him again. Did you ever get “extra liquid” spilled on you during a fill?

    Unjury

I actually thought the chicken broth was great. I'd also warm a can of beef broth and add a scoop of unflavored Unjury for protein. I got a lot of use out of unflavored Unjury. I cooked a vegetable beef soup for the family today. Since I'm only three weeks post surgery, I strained a bowl of soup and added unflavored Unjury to the broth.

    Numbness

I don't know if its normal but it happen to me...my stomach under the incision where they took my stomach out was numb for almost 2 weeks, one day I noticed it wasn't numb any more. When I went to my 2week check up my dr said my incisions had healed perfectly and they removed my stiches and that I was ok. He told me to be concerned if I had fever, my incisions bruised or oozed.
  7. Hello I was banded 16 months ago and now have BMI 22. Obviously great news. About a month ago I had my band completely deflated because of reflux symptoms. But now I have a new symptom of pain. For about a week I've had pain on eating or drinking, I can't eat more than a few mouthfuls before resting, so I don't think this is a pouch dilatation. Then there is awful epigastric pain, sometimes going through to my back. It's relieved by drinking lots of Water, though not always, and it's kept me awake at night a few times. I wondered if it was reflux oesophagitis and bought some gaviscon advance which really helped for a few days along with a soft diet. Although last night the pain was so bad I had to get out of bed and ended up vomiting food I'd eaten a whole 6 hours earlier. Vomiting made the pain go away. So now I'm worried I have a band slip. But in between eating and pain I mostly feel fine. Wait it out or get some advice? Thank you!

    how do i move on?

This forum has been a life saver to me. I was sleeved on 7/18/11, exactly 6 weeks today. At first, I thought I would never feel normal again. I had a day or two of what have I done, but for the most part have no regrets. That being said, I feel like I turned a corner between week 4 and 5. At first, I didn't think I would ever feel normal again until that time. I started to get most of my water and protein in, my routine became more normal. I feel like myself again. The only difference is that I feel like I am a picky eater, not a restricted eater. There are very few foods that I cannot not eat, but a lot of foods that I choose not to eat. Its not that I felt bad before, its just that I feel sooooo much better now. I think you are too soon in to see all the good things that are happening to you and will continue to happen. Although some of us had a shorter process than others making it to the actual surgery, all of us had many attempts at loosing the weight before we considered it. I bet you are the same way too. I think you will feel differently in the near future. Remember, this is a process. We will have our ups and downs. Own it and move on. One word of advice, that I have found helpful.... be prepared when you leave the house. Take snacks and always have something you can eat with you. You will not be worried about what you are going to eat and what people will think of you. It has worked for me, sounds silly, but it is great advice. Good luck

yep another ? to pick ya brain

you know, i get the hiccups too. all the time tho, whether im eating or not. its not too pleasant right now being that im only 1 week out. its more annoying and it hurts.
  10. I have an appointment to get another fill tomorrow. I was feeling like I really needed one when I made the appointment. That same day at lunch I could barely get my food down. I have felt great restriction for the last week...then yesterday I was able to eat more than I should be able to. I have not really lost any weight since my last fill and then unfill. Maybe they took too much out? If I could have restriction like I did last week it would be great. My challange is to make the decision to go ahead and get the fill or to see if the restriction starts back up again. Since it went away yesterday I feel like I should still go ahead with my appointment. Has anyone else had this experience and what did you do?
  11. Rarely if ever do first fills give you any kind of restriction. Usually it's three or four or more before you hit that "sweet spot." I think you did very well with your amount of food consumed and sometimes for some people it's no longer a stuffed feeling, it's a loss of interest with eating, or it's a hiccup or their nose runs or they get a golf ball feeling, it's it sooo different for each of us what satisfied feels like. Read Wendell's post about fills and unfills in the FAQ forum, it's very informative.

To Fill or Not to Fill?

Angie -- I have my first fill scheduled tomorrow. Have been able to eat pretty much anything without restriction for the last week and then today I thought I was going to die while eatting a cracker. I think this is as close to a PB as I've ever been; pain, sweating, feeling like I was going to vomit. So yes there must be something to the pre-fill jitters.

    In a funk

So my surgeons office will be calling me Thursday to make an appointment to meet with my surgeon and then at that appointment he will give me a date which I was informed would be at most 1 month from that appointment... I have been so positive throughout all of this and I've been doing great losing weight and being active and eating right. Well I woke up this morning from my third bad dream about this surgery in the last week. Today I just feel fat and gross and like I'm going to be like this forever. Idk what is going on with me today but I can't snap out of it. Going to the gym here soon so hopefully that helps. Ugh thanks for reading.
  14. Hi Toni. Like you I am also worried that i will be denied by my insurance company. As of last week I have completed all the required PCP visits, testing and attendance at support groups. Now the waiting begins. My bariatric surgeon seems confident that it will be approved and said if it's not we will appeal. I'm hoping the first time is a go. I need this surgery for so many reasons. Good luck to you.
  15. I have the same thing also. I wanted to mention it when I got my fill, but I forgot. I have an appt with the office in 2 weeks, so I am going to mention it when Iam there. Its not bothering me, and I know not to pull it, and nothing is infected, so I will wait for him. From what I am hearing, its common

Support needed, 5 days post op!

I am now 10 weeks post-op. I have struggled with feeling hungry BIG TIME! The more solid food you eat the less you will feel hungry. I have found a couple things that help with the hunger pains. You should definitely be on an antacid. Get in a minimum of 64 oz of water a day. The more water you drink the less you will be hungry. It's hard to get hungry if you're constantly filling your sleeve up with water. Once you get to soft & solid foods veggies are your best friend. I get in my protein first (just like the NUT ordered). I am almost always still hungry after my protein. Sometimes it only takes a few bites of veggies to then get that full feeling. As far as vitamins, I too have a box full of very expensive bariatric vitamins. The problem was that they were so gross I wouldn't take them. I switched over to gummy vitamins (both multi & a calcium chewable). I figure that it is better than no vitamins. Just keep pressing on. You'll be okay & will feel better the more weight that comes off. The beginning is really tough! Keep working your program & keep posting.

Pre-op peeps- I want to give you

Hi Meggie, so glad you're doing better each and every day. I watched your Youtube videos and really appreciate you doing them. To be honest I haven't watched a lot of them but probably will in the next few weeks. I wish you continued success each and every day with getting in more and more water and protein too. Like everyone say's each day it gets a little easier. Take care and I look forward to more wonderful posts and videos.

    It's worth it!!!!!

So I went and met with the personal trainer yesterday. She is very straight to the point and willing to help. She knows her stuff I must say!!! She is ranked in the top 50 personal trainers in the United States! So no big deal we are talking about nutrition and what I have to do. 1100 Calories sounds like ALOT  But like she broke it down for me and if I eat around five small meals a day.. that makes each meal only about 240 to 250 calories!!! :phanvan That sounds like NOTHING!!!! But I am real positive. The nice thing is she is not paper thin, but yet she looks really really good! So the dreaded question.. how much does she charge! I thought about 600 a month. I don't know how trainers work! HAHAHAHAHAHA Boy did I make myself laugh :whoo: For 12 weeks and four times a week the grand total is $2,280.00. Thank god for tax return season is all I have to say! To me her training me for three months is WORTH it. So I meet with her today we are going to just do measurements... the DREADED measurments! :cry But... I the good thing is I won't have to dread measurments or getting on the scale ever AGAIN!!!!! :biggrin1: I cannot wait to see myself in 12 weeks, just the improvements. You know she said something wise to me and it really stuck. "people think that eating does not control them losing weight, and it is the key factor, you cannot just do 2 hours of cardio and strength training and not watch your calories, and you cannot just do cardio and skip what you eat." Makes alot of sense from that perspective. She said we have to have ALL of the pieces of the puzzle. So true, and my whole life I have NEVER had all the pieces to the puzzle! All I can say is LOOK OUT WORLD CAUSE HERE I COME!!!!! :peace::peace:
  19. I had my consult with surgeon last month, along with my first of 6mnths diet. 2nd diet appt is 11/22..had lab work, pulmonary test, Upper GI completed this week. My next move is to inform my PCP of my plans. If he gives me any issues whatsoever, unfortunately he will be dismissed. I really don't need anyone negative attitude. It was hard enough for me to come to the conclusion I wanted to have WLS. Looking forward to hopefully April/May 2014 if God willing insurance approves. Anyone nervous and excited all at the same time?

    Many questions regarding Kaiser

Thank you. I changed my PCP and saw my new one today. She said that she doesn't make the decision and she has to have me go to the "weight management overview" class first which I have scheduled for next week. So does that sound right or not? I am also going to have blood tests done tomorrow that she set up. If the class is indeed the first step, then what is next?
  21. you Know how long did it take you to get your freak on:kiss2: ofter surgery..Is it like 6 weeks or less?
  22. I went to my drs today and seen him for the first time except the seminar. He asked me how much weight I needed to lose, I said about 95 pounds. He said a successful weight lost is 55% of your weight so I should lose 55-60 pounds. Of course I want to lose more than that! Can anyone explain what he meant. If I work hard at this I can lose the rest, right? The lady that does the insurance said it takes about a week for her to get my paper work ready, then the submit it to the insurance and they have 45 days to respond but normally respond in a 2-3 weeks. I have seen so many of you say you got an approval in a few days, I didn't know it was going to take that long. Then she said he would schedule my surgery in a month after my approval, wow, during the holidays!! Oh well, I'm not going to put it off, that is for sure. I'm not even sure if my insurance is requiring 6 months yet. They said it normally does but I don't think I have B/C B/S PPO of Florida, my husbands corp office is Ohio so it may be from there. Does anyone have B/C B/S PPO of OH and know their policy? Thanks for any help.

    Sex And A Port?

My husband is a big guy too. I am 4 weeks post-op & we have no problems with the port. My port was so sore that I can just now finally sleep on my side....but sex has not been a problem.
  24. You'll discover that you'll hear a HUGE range of answers on this. In all cases you must realize that experiences are highly individualized. I had surgery on a Thursday, stayed overnight because I use a CPAP and they monitor you after anesthesia. I went back to work and school on Tuesday (Monday was a holiday.) Take a week off of work, a full 7 days! Go back to school after about 3 days, or as soon as you feel that you can. You will NOT be able to carry a backpack or laptop bag, so invest in a rolling bag or work out an alternative. The post-op gas appears to be 90% of the reason that people suffer after surgery. I told my doc to "squeeze me like a Ziploc" before he closed me. Turns out, none of his patients have the gas problem 'cause he's really good about that anyway! The pre-op diet is really important for two reasons: 1) to shrink your liver so that the surgeon can move it out of the way well enough to not have to do an open surgery (open is when they actually open you like a c-section scar size) and, 2) to begin your mental adjustment to leaving food as you now know it. I thought that the mental adjustment was the hardest. You have to figure out how to recognize "head" hunger and develop some strategies for working against it. Along those same lines, you will need to learn how to quit focusing on food and drink being such a focus on your socializing. You will eventually be able to eat nearly anything you like. Everyone has foods that they, individually, cannot eat such as Pasta, bread, steak, tough veggies. You'll figure yours out. Whenever you are out, just stick to things that you know are "safe" for you. The drinking isn't out of the question, you just need to come to grips with the fact that it isn't worth it. First of all, booze is all carbs so it really is an awful waste of nutrition. Personally, I take a half glass of wine once a week or so, and have had a shot. No point really in the shot. Not fun, and socially not really satisfying. Remember that you will be chewing whatever you eat a LOT. Order a very small portion (appetizer or kids, or share) and as long as you are chewing properly it will last the entire meal. That's assuming that you stop when you get full too. You believe that you've made a good choice for yourself, so you'll be able to make the band work. It'll be hard for the first two months or so, but it will get easier after that.

Support needed, 5 days post op!

Week 1 was pretty hard for me and i was ALWAYS hungry! I was only taking otc pepcid. At my first post op appointment I mentioned it to the Dr and he started me on a prescription strength Prevacid. Well guess what the hunger pangs are gone! At my appoinment last week he told me to take the prescription in the am and to take a pepcid at night. Becuase i have noticed that by 5 or 6 pm i start feeling alot of reflux. Talk to your Dr. at your appointment. As far as Vitamins, I take gummy vitamins and they dont bother me 1 bit. I feel like i am eating gummy bears (sort of satisfies the sweet tooth) And then i also take the B12 which if you really want you can have your PCP give you a monthly shot instead. I also take Vitamin D3 and Biotin (wanna make sure my hair doesnt fall out). I will be 5 weeks post op on thursday and like the other posters said before It does get better, easier, and it becomes a no brainer! Good luck to you!
