When do we stop focusing on food?
Read2016 replied to girl4god77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think the focus on planning food will never end... As a teacher we have a saying if you don't plan for kids, they'll plan for you... I kind of see it the same way with food, if you don't plan your meals you will wind of making poor choice.. I do believe the longer you follow high Protein eating the easier it will be and as you move along in the process you will find more and more sources of protein..600 calories does not sound healthy to me.. During my trip to traders joe yesterday, I found hemp seed... 10grams of protein per serving, good for adding to yogurt etc... Different Restriction through the day
ResaRoo posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 6 months post op mini bypass. I’ve noticed in the last month or so that I feel restriction still in the mornings and can eat very little (ex. 1/2 cup yogurt and some berries). But in the evenings, I can easily eat 2-3 times as much as in the morning before I feel the restriction. Is this common? Is it because I haven’t eaten at night so my stomach is less “stretched” in the morning? It just seems very odd. I find that if I’m not portioning out my meal properly in the evening, it can be easy to over eat, or at least eat more than I plan to eat. -
I'll be interested in what your doctor has to day. When I was 2 days out, I went in for IV therapy and after I got home, it was magical because from that point on, no more tiny sips! I was able to drink a normal drink of water and shakes. I wasn't parched or anything like that. Six days post op, I called my doctor about another issue and during our conversation, I mentioned how I was so tired of shakes and broth and it seemed I was hungry. She told me to start eating scrambled eggs and if I was okay with that, I could then move on to other soft/pureed foods. I think the yogurt and other foods like soups and even the pureed foods just are easier to eat without giving us a full feeling. Once you move to textured foods, you'll be able to feel full.

I can not believe how excited i am to add yogurt! Woo hoo!

Okay I'm post op 8 days now. I'm done with liquids and on to mushies ... but I need a little advice cause I don't think I'm being creative enough. My question is what do I eat. I have made some home made tuna salad, soup, and yogurt . Everything hurts going down that I have to chew so I really don't want to try anything else even though my doctor says I can. I do have this new zest to work out though. I just in need of little motivation I guess.

6-days post op and already cheating :(
ParrotheadCathy replied to _Kimo_'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Kimo, solid food takes a different process to digest. Liquids simply pass on through the pouch and through the rest of your stomach sort of "at will". Any solid food requires your stomach to "churn" it....and that action can cause complications INCLUDING SLIPPAGE. Call your doctor's office, tell them about the bread, and ask for help with what you can have to help satisfy your hunger. I was on liquids for 10 days, mushies for 10 days, then added solid foods slowly. But while on liquids, I could have as much as I wanted when I wanted...double check that with your doc! Pudding, jello, broth, soup (puree the ones that have solids in them), yogurts, popsicles, frozen lemonade, make stock from scratch (it has a lot more flavor). If you need to know how, private message me and I'll pass it on. I've posted it on here so many times I'm just going to offer it if you want it. -
6Days Post Po And Starving
ambertuttle replied to ambertuttle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm glad that others are experiencing this too... I'm going to call my dr and see abt maybe progressing to mushy foods. I did have some very runny mash potatoes for dinner n now i am not feeling hungry like i was... But I think I'll try the Greek yogurt bc I'm needing more protein. -
Sounds like you are confusing volume vs weight. My doctor says that at perfect restriction you should be satisfied at 4 oz (weight) total per meal and not be hungry for 5 hours. Since I am not a rescriction that is not enough for me. After my fills I do 24 hours full liquids and then 24 hours mushies. Full liquids I do 8 oz of soup (like tomato not broth) and a while later a protein shake (at least 8 oz). When I move to mushies I have for breakfast 6 oz greek yoghurt (thicker than regular yogurt) with 1/4 scoop protein powder, for lunch/dinner I have canned chicken made with laughing cow cheese 3 oz, and half sweet potato. When you are on liquids or mushies I would try spacing out your food so that you eat every couple hours. Yes you might have more than 3 cups a soup that day but if they are low fat/cal (100 cal.) what's the big deal?

First banned in 8/2008 @ 385 lbs went well, lost 100 lbs,,,,after 4 yrs blow it out with major slip from stress etc,,,,,removed waited and replaced in 2014,,,,,regained of course. Started over and was so scared of another slip I didn't have regular fills. Managed to get down to 350 with only one fill post op. Finally went back and had fill under fluoroscope last month 7/2020 and looked good, filled from 5 to 5.1. Felt no difference so just added 1 cc more Aug 2020 and man I am restricted. I don't remember filling this way after a fill. I drank the water in the office and seems ok but really should have just got .5 cc but wanted some restriction, I feel full all the time and water goes down slow, if I eat soft things it does go down but feels like it's still in the band. It's been 4 days and just now on soft food, yogurt, soups etc... Should I go back or just wait a little longer,,,I just can't remember if it takes a while after a fill to not be belching and slimming all day long. Believe I have the 14 band and think I maxed out at 7 cc yrs ago.

Almost 2 Weeks Post Op
Kime-lou replied to bonmah77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was allowed to have milk at day 4, just depends on your doctor. You may want to make sure you tea is decaf, caffine tends to increase your hungry- I've been dealing with that myself lately. Soft/Mushy stage: thin creamed potatos (made mine with chicken broth and added a little cheese- YUM), yogurt, SF pudding, thinned oatmeal or grits, mushed up soft cooked green Beans, baiscally anything that is of the yogurt consistancy. Beware as you enter into this stage people who have seen weight loss tend to see a slight increase. Just stick to your basics and you will be fine. Right now concentrate on healing your body. -
@@leag78 I would try ditching the processed carbs altogether... Were the baked nuggets breaded? I'd ditch the uncrustable altogether. I'm sure it's not providing the kind of nutrition you need. As far as Snacks go, try a sugar free Jello, a low sugar yogurt, string cheese, slice of lunch meat, boiled egg, or a couple baby carrots or mini peppers. I find that I have greater success with "real food".

Approved for Solids at 1 week post op
losingitat41 replied to Rocky_Mountain_Mama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so glad to read these entries. My doctor approved soft foods- yogurt right away then after he checked me 10 days post op i was on thicker foods and approved to move to fish and move on to whatever i could tolerate. I have been following a very clean eating plan- smoothie made with protein powder and fruit for bkfst, yogurt for snack, some hummus and vegetables on ryvita crisp bread for lunch another snack, maybe hand ful of nuts, then fish and steamed veggies or quinoa or tofu for supper. sometimes a little protein shake before bed. i have also made hamburger patties (very moist) and we had that one night. I can pretty much eat everything and i was banded on July 22nd. I am anxious for a fill b/c i dont feel full. I try to limit myself to 4 oz- 6oz per meal, but i am still hungry. I am self pay so i feel ike i just paid 20K to diet!!! But i do know that with the fill i will be feeling more restriction. After reading about strict diets of liquids and mushies for a month, i was a bit scared that i had moved to fast but my doctor seems to think its just fine. -
my foods, what's wrong...so frustrated..
deedeemuffin replied to GlendaLee's topic in Food and Nutrition
That's cool that we have the same surgery date. I definitely agree with not weighing yourself daily. As someone else pointed out the scale can definitely be a liar. I would really suggest making an appointment with your nutritionist. I would not recommend going back to only liquids. Our body is past that point. We need to be able to eat real food. Going back on liquids is like our past yo-yo dieting. A liquid restart would be for someone who had really gone off the rails in terms of eating. Every surgeon's office is different in their diet guidelines. I would definitely take a look at your sodium intake. When I see lunch meat, Jerky and a bar of some sort they are all LOADED with sodium. I have found that getting all my Water in is crucial to my success. Your body actually retains more Fluid the less you drink. Like I said, everyone's surgeon has different nutritional guidelines, but I will share mine with you. My nutritionist does not have me count calories. My guidelines are 60-70 grams of Protein, less than 40 grams net carbs (not including fruit or vegetables) and less than 1,500 mg of sodium. I do not vary what I eat very much as I have found that what I eat right now works pretty well for me. This is a sample of what my day looks like: Breakfast: 8 oz. almond milk, 1 scoop chocolate Designer whey Protein powder, 2 tbsp. PB2 & half a frozen banana blended into a shake. (Total of 24 g of protein) Lunch: Chobani 0% fat plain greek yogurt with 2 tbsp. of PB2 & 1 packet Truvia. (Total 23 g protein.) Snack: 2 Polly-O String cheese or 1/4 cup edamame (Total 14 g protein for either snack) So: before I even sit down to dinner I have had a total of 61g of protein. Dinner is always vegetarian: Tofu & veggies, Beans & rice, etc. If I feel like I need something at night I have a serving of fruit - strawberries, blueberries, red grapes & cantaloupe are my new favorites. I drink 16 oz of water in between Breakfast & Lunch. Then another 16 between lunch and snack. Another 16 between snack and dinner and my final 16 after dinner. I always follow the rule of no liquid 30 minutes prior to or after a meal. Sorry, I know that this is a super long post, but if even one thing helps you then it is well worth it. Don't give up. I started at a much higher weight than you. So, it makes sense that my weight loss is a bit of a higher number. This is really such a learning process of how to fuel our bodies not just feed them. I also think that some of us expected to lose more quickly, feel more restricted and lose huge numbers. I was sure that I would be down 100 lbs in the first 3 months & here I am 4 months out & down 75 lbs. Don't get me wrong, I am certainly not complaining! I just know that personally, I am learning to use my sleeve as just 1 tool in my weight loss efforts. I would say that I average between 750-900 calories a day, but I choose what those calories are comprised of. I can have 700 calories of healthy, body fueling food or 700 empty calories. So, there is still the aspect of needing to put healthy food in our bodies and exercising. Add the sleeve and you have a good weigh loss trifecta. The most important thing is not to give up. There are a multiplicity of reasons that you are not losing at the rate that you want to. It's up to you to find what that is. We continue to be here for support. I really hope that you are feeling better soon! -
I think a lot if the artificial sweeteners make some of us, like me for sure...sick and splenda definitely leaved a bad taste in my mouth I can't get rid of I use natural stevia , experimented to find one I like lol and that helped if I really wanted something sweetened. I use g6 sports vanilla Protein powder sweetened with stevia. It's super clean, dissolved easily and, to me, tastes great. I put it in skim milk and sometimes add some fage Greek yogurt for more protein. The powder has 25grams if protein but it's a bit more expensive then most protein powders however if you have a GNC near, they give you a free membership and significant discount. Getting out . most artificial sweeteners brought my mouth, gut and stomach back to peace and I like my food...

To lower the amount of carbs in the foods you mentioned, use Water for the Protein shakes instead of milk and look for the low carb yogurts. I like the Dannon light & fit greek yogurt. a serving has 12 g protein, 8 g carb and no fat (80 cal)

6 days post op, calories, and hunger
mythreechildren2001 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 days post op, and I was allowed to go to purees upon release from the hospital. I didn't then as I had zero interest in putting anything in my mouth! But now I'm feeling that gnawing hunger that you feel in the pit of your stomach. I didn't expect to feel it, and I don't really know what to do about it. Here is what I have eaten today: 6 oz 99% ff yogurt (in this I mix my PPI and my gallstone prevention med) 1/2 low carb slim fast 1/4 cup of oatmeal made with 1/2 cup of milk Water, ice chips, and a sf popsicle When I enter this in fitness pal, it says I have eaten 410 calories...and it's only 1 pm here! That is more calories than I feel I should be having, but at the same time I feel hungry. I'm so confused, and I don't really understand any of it! oh and I've lost 10 lbs in 1 week. -
6 Days Post Op And I'm Starving.
barrbdoll replied to CHELL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was able to add shakes and drinkable yogurt after day 4...and on day 7 I could add creamy Soups (no chunks). Each surgeon seems to have a different post-op diet.... I would check to see if you can have Protein shakes and start drinking at least 2 per day... Of course, check with you surgeon.. he may give you clearance to move to the next stage. Good Luck! -
4 Weeks Post-Op On Tuesday And I Can't Get All My Protein In Is This Normal? When Will I Be Able Too?
MegInNOLA replied to Karen2012's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I couldn't tolerate any form of protein shakes, either, until I made my own using "real food." Greek yogurt, milk, flavorings, a couple of ice cubes. You can bump up the protein by adding nonfat milk powder or Egg Beaters (they're pasteurized). Zap in a blender and voila. It's not as high in protein as a ready-to-drink or powder, but you can get all the ingredients at the store, plus I found it really easy to customize to fit my tastes (plus my sleeve actually let me keep these down!). Hang in there. It gets easier when you can move to mushies. -
4 Weeks Post-Op On Tuesday And I Can't Get All My Protein In Is This Normal? When Will I Be Able Too?
aldmb2 replied to Karen2012's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I cant tolerate the shakes. They made me vomit, and I ended up back in the hospital. My Dr. said not to worry about it. Keeping hydrated was more important. I try to eat an egg for t, mushy ceral & greek yogurt, and flaky fish. Of course your diet depends on your Dr..... I can have chicken (skinless) starting next week. I've lost 26lbs....there are other ways to get protein than those nasty over priced shakes! -
5 Days Post Op And Hungry!
jannaboo replied to jannaboo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just started pudding and yogurt. It's helping. Thanks everyone -
Yes, my nutritionist told me I could eat VERY soft veggies... cooked to mushy stage... so that's what I did. I used the boiled chicken mostly (with a variety of sauces for added moisture, sometimes very softly sauteed onions, peppers) and stayed away from high carbs (no Pasta, breads, rice, etc.) with the exception of mashed potato and sweet potato. I ate a lot of boiled yellow squash during that phase... and even now, I find it a good veggie to add to whatever portein I'm eating because it's very soft and not dry. (I usually keep a cooked bowl in the fridge.) I allowed myself olive oil to cook with, but sparingly. I hardly ever use butter any more, the spray butter works great for me. I usually cooked up a good batch of boiled chicken then portioned it out in the little Gladware containers that hold 1/2 cup. That way it was portioned and ready to go when I needed it. I'd do the same with my potato and veggies. Scrambled eggs or egg beaters with lite shredded cheese was usually Breakfast , and cottage cheese or potato with cheese was a staple as a snack or alternative lunch. (I'm not a yogurt eater) It didn't bother me to eat a lot of the same things to get through the "mushy stage"... the joy of eating "normal" food came quickly enough and the great weight loss during that phase was really encouraging! Some people experience gains before their fills, but it wasn't the case for me. I stuck to the rule, Protein first, then veggies.. I could easily eat up to 2 cups of food then, (usually 1/2 c protien, rest veggies...) but still lost weight because my food choices were healthy. I can't eat that amount now, (now maybe 1/2- 1 cup per meal) but the discipline of eating healthy foods has stayed with me so far! Don't worry, you're going to do GREAT! :cheer2:

When to drink and when not to..wow this has really turned out to be important for me. I still don't have alot of restriction, but if I drink anything within a half hour before eating it's a free for all *no restriction*. Still, right now I don't even have to take small bites or chew well. I'm even pondering if I have a leak. Today's Eats 1 mini orange 1 sausage and cheese sand 1/4c nuts 1 sf yogurt w/berries 1 mini orange cup 5 sf peanut candies 1 sausage patty 1 atkins bar

Oh, boy, am I going to regret this. Blech. I've been nibbling all day, and haven't been drinking at all. Bad, and bad. Then on my way home from work I gave in to a craving for a frozen-yogurt mix-in with Peanut Butter cups. Then I get home and proceed to eat 10 miniature peanut-butter cups left over from Easter. YUM. and YUCK! That's it for me. I'm done for the day. (Is there any Protein in peanut butter cups?) Part of me hopes I've made myself sick. Pooh.
