  1. Good luck with your surgery in the AM. I got revised 4/15. Highest weight 311, Surgery weight 288, Current weight 243. I did good with my sleeve till the I fractured my spine. I developed a hernia and my GERD was rediculous. Then I got a pregnant a year later and only continued the weight gain with post partum depression. Doing great mentally and physically now, steady weight loss but I am right on par considering the meds I have to take slow it down. Sent from my SM-G973U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Acid reflux at nightime

most surgeons will recommend that patients who have reflux issues go the bypass route rather than the sleeve route. Bypass usually improves if not outright cures reflux. Sleeve can make it worse. It doesn't happen to everyone - in fact, some sleevers have said theirs improved, but for about 30%, it does get worse. Those odds were too high for me, so i went with bypass (like you, I had issues with it before surgery). Many cases can be controlled medically (by taking PPI's), but some people end up revising to bypass. regardless of which surgery you get, a lot surgeons automatically put their patients on PPI's for the first 3-6 months post surgery just so any potential acid issues don't affect the healing. If yours doesn't, and if you start having issues, ask. They'll probably put you on one.
  3. Since most surgeries are done laparoscopically, and most go home the next morning, other than someone driving you home, it's very doable to recover alone. They had me walking the hospital aisles every few hours right after the surgery till I was released at 11 am the next morning. I walked around a lot the day I got home doing light chores... Etc. Back to desk work on day 3 but you do feel very tired for a week or so. Again, as everyone will tell you, everyone is different. These are my experiences (both with vsg and revision to rny).
  4. Welcome, Amanda! What type of surgery are you considering? I had a VSG a year and a half ago and am getting ready to have a revision to RNY. There are a lot of really great and knowledgeable people on here so be sure to ask questions that will help you on your WL journey! You’ll find that once you decide on the type of surgery you want to have you should join more specific groups. People are very happy to share their thoughts and answer questions. So…. glad you’ve joined us!😁
  5. Some surgeons will tell you to stay away from tomatoes at first if you've had a history of gerd or is susceptible to getting gerd. I had severe gerd and had a revision because of it but I was allowed tomato soup "with caution".
  6. I actually had a hiatal hernia of my sleeve which is what lead to my revision. I’m pretty happy with my results from it. The only complications I’ve had have stemmed from my uncanny ability to develop hernias leading to one of my mesentery followed by 2 more of my mesentery and intestines that lead to a small bowel obstruction with necrotic tissue after developing 2 seromas from the first mesentery hernia repair. Plus, I already had a hiatal hernia repaired when I had my sleeve (this is totally genetic for me- being hernia prone and is totally atypical of most revision surgery patients).

    Lost about revision

Hey there you all! Sorry for not replying until now. Thank you all so much for replying back to me! So I got a made another appointment with my doctor and she referred me to the medical doctor who works with my previous surgeon (which I really did like). This lady was absolutely wonderful. First of all she got me a new sleep study, the one I had I told her about she said they were idiots. So I am going for that but we are going ahead with a revision. We are going to wait on my sleep study results. The lady that I met with about the sleep study was the most interesting lady I have ever met. I never knew so much about sleep disorders and I was thankful to be sent to someone with such knowledge. Again thank you al! I will be uploading more because God knows I need buddies. My only one recently got taken away, so throughout this journey I will be alone. have a wonderful night!

How many tacos one year out?

I'm at one year revision to RNY, lately I've been into eating one taco (~69g), mixing it with a serving of lettuce, and maybe a tablespoon of fat free sour cream, pouring hot sauce on it as dressing (zero cals). It's really good and filling too. I think I could probably eat 2 small tacos but I prefer using extra lettuce to fill up.
  9. How has your recovery been going after your revision from sleeve to the bypass? Are you happy with the outcome? Have you experienced any complications ? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I’m so glad this is working for you. I also have Aetna. I have GERD, but the EGD only showed a hietal hernia. I looked at the guidelines and they changed the requirements if get a revision to bypass only for GERD. I’m hoping the hernia repair will be enough to get approval. anyone knows more about this?
  11. hey! how was your surgery, how are you feeling? I’m on the same boat trying to get the surgery. Same thing, GERD after sleeve, EGD showed an hernia and I want to get revision to bypass. My BMI is 31 and my fear is that my insurance won’t cover it 😢
  12. I’m on the same boat. I already started the process to get a revision to bypass with a BMI of 31. I had very bad GERD but the EGD only showed up a hietal hernia, and I guess Aetna guidelines says esophagitis. I’m terrified they would not approve me because of this 😭

    New Member/Revisions

Anyone here got the revision from sleeve to bypass with a lower BMI? Long story short, I got a revision from band to sleeve on 2016, reached my goal weight, and started to have lots of reflux and life and my current BMI is now 31. I started the process to get a revision, and the EDG only showed a 4cm hietal hernia but nothing related to esophagitis. I have to go back to the doctor next week, but I’m fearful my insurance will deny me because they would need more proof of my GERD. I read the guidelines for Aetna, and it says esophagitis 😭

    Liquid diet

I have been using the patch multivitamin too for about 7 years. First with the VSG, and a year now after my RNY revision. I do add the Calcium chews caramel apples or grape flavor from time to time. If I don't use my patches (i.e. ran out and waiting for new order) I like the Barimelts ADEK. Vitamin/mineral blood tests good. This year I switched brands though and went to PatchAid since my old brand changed vitamin/mineral percentage.

3 months post VSG and NOTHING

I feel your frustration! I’ve only lost about 60 lbs in the past year and a half since my VSG. My dietitian isnt very helpful in my trying to get my grams of protein other than adding protein shakes which definitely slows down my weight loss! I’ve resorted to eating (and tracking!) an all protein diet (eggs, fish, chicken, etc..) and adding in small amounts of green veggies. To get to my protein goals I have to add a protein powder like unflavored GenePro to my food and drinks. I only weigh myself a few days a week. Now I’ve developed terrible acid reflux and a hiatal hernia so I’m going to be revised to a RNY. I’m hoping it will fix a multitude of issues!!! Hang in there! Take a look at MyFitnessPal to track your food and macros!

    7 Months Post-Op

Even though you’ll need to have a revision, I am glad they discovered why you were struggling to eat. Are you sure you have to go through the full pre surgery diet process or just the usual nothing to eat or drink from the night before the surgery practise? Your liver has already shrunk, you’ve lost a lot of weight & your general health would be way better now then when you had the first surgery. But … 🤷🏻‍♀️ You may find it isn’t as difficult this time as at least you’ll know what happens & to expect after surgery. All the best.

    7 Months Post-Op

Congratulations on your weight loss! Sorry you have to have a revision. I guess all surgeries come with risks, it could be worse, try to stay positive. Hope you feel better soon!
  18. VSG is actually stage one of the DS. Years ago many surgeons did the DS in two stages (first, the sleeved stomach, then a few months later, the bypassed small intestine). Some patients did really well just with stage 1, so they started offering the sleeved stomach as a standalone surgery. Ta da! The VSG was born! so yes - lots of DS'ers had their DS done in two stages (esp those who had it done several years ago), and there are definitely people who've revised from VSG to DS. It's a more straightforward surgery than going from VSG to RNY, since you're already halfway to the DS when you have a VSG.
  19. Hello all, This is my first post here so if I mess up on etiquette I apologize. I am two years out from a very successful VSG surgery. I went from 265lbs to 175lbs - I’m 24 and 5’2, barely any loose skin, and I’m very happy with the results. However I have PCOS and was estimated to be able to lose more if I didn’t have that to contend with, and I wasn’t able to hit my realistic OR ideal goals. I know I’m much better off than I was by far, but I still wasn’t fully happy, so I put down a deposit for a DS revision surgery. Because of Covid I had to reschedule it to January 2023. But now I’m suddenly worried and having doubts. I can’t seem to find anyone who has revised from VSG to DS, and I’m worried about losing TOO much weight. My surgeon has had me come entirely off vitamins as my labs are perfect without them, and admittedly I don’t miss them, so that’s a downfall but one I’m willing to accept. My surgeon does also perform RNY and reconstruction but my sleeve hasn’t stretched back out, and he has told me that DS is often referred to as the second stage to VSG. Mostly I’m looking for advice and anecdotes from this forum! Is there anyone who did it in two stages instead of one? Pros and cons? Tips? I’m desperate for anyone who has any experience with this.
  20. Mine took quite a few years. After that it was like gurgling acid in my sleep and a burning esophagus day on and day out. When you can't sleep, one tend to eat for energy. That didn't help my weight loss. It was horrible. I had a revision last August, and I feel so much better.

    Nutritionalist consult

My 2 week pre-op diet was 3-4 shakes a day with no more than 200 calories each and minimum 15g of protein, celery and cucumbers, and 1-2 cups of chicken or beef broth a day. Absolutely NO popsicles or sugar free jello. I would constantly be shaving celery with a peeler into “noodles” and then adding it to the broth for a soup of sorts. AND I was super lucky enough to do it twice in an 8 month period. 😂 (needed a hernia repair surgery that was coupled with a VSG to RNY revision to reduce chances of future hernias.)
  22. I went with a totally different hospital/program after having a bad nutritionist. Like @Daja I had to get an upper endoscopy and a barium swallow test done which was required. My first consult the doctor told me a revision would be best if I had severe GERD but they weren't going to approve me for surgery without doing tests...LOL During my tests they found the reason for my GERD and deemed it medically necessary. The surgeon did tell me if they found a HERNIA he would've performed SAD-IS procedure or a DS.
  23. I have decided to get a revision from a sleeve to gastric bypass. My heartburn is getting worse and i'm gaining weight. I was originally sleeved in 2017. I am ready for this second chance because I have to self pay. I can't believe I have two full-time jobs and I'm still concerned about costs for this procedure. My first job won't cover the procedure and the second contracting job won't either. Since being sleeved, I never got to my goal weight. If you have any recommendations for bariatric surgeons in the Atlanta area, please let me know because my original surgeon has since retired during covid. I've found one surgeon, but he's very pricey at $24,000 and it doesn't include post-op appointments (insurance can cover), labs (insurance can cover), nutritional visits, (not covered by insurance) or supplements. Any feedback is welcomed.
  24. I went with a different surgeon due to insurance issues. Had major GERD issues with Barrett’s esophagus, my GI had me maxed out on PPI’s and did PH monitoring, EGD, and Barium’s swallow tests. All of this is usually required by insurance companies before they will pay for the revision. Sometimes GERD is caused by a change in the anatomy of the original sleeve (which was not the case for me) my Dr told me if that is the case they can use a ballon to change it to what it should be or try to resleeve rather than a revision to RNY. It’s definitely worth a consult before such a major surgery. Wishing you all the best…
  25. Yes, my doctor is deciding whether or not to appeal or just submit a new request for authorization for repair to my hiatal hernia (and I self pay the bypass portion.) I have BCBS and they said my revision was not medically necessary. I’m afraid if my doctor submits paperwork for an appeal (and the whole thing gets denied again) then that’s the end of the road for me. I don’t mind paying the bypass portion since it’s very doable ($2600.) I almost feel like the hernia repair is more likely to be authorized. What do you think??
