Hi there, I've had my sleeve surgery on 29/04. I was so scared but after the operation I was good. I struggled to get water down after operation. This Friday it would be two weeks and I cannot wait to start eating healthy food. Miss chewing. Anyone else on here from Melbourne, Australia? Sent from my SM-G998B using BariatricPal mobile app

    So cool!!!

So when I had my surgery, I was able to see pics of the inside of my stomach as well as the part that was removed after the surgery. I just logged into my patient portal and I was able to read the surgery notes and pathology notes. The part of my stomach they removed was 8 1/2 inches long and 2 inches wide. A regular, empty stomach is about 12 inches long by 6 inches wide and can hold up to a quart of food. That means my remaining stomach is only 3 1/2 inches long and 4 inches wide and can hold 3 ounces lol Very, very neat...
  4. Ever tried Korean Hot Dogs? Think: corn dog on steroids. Picked these up for the fam this afternoon and i had about 1/3 of the furthest one on left for dinner-ish. Its a “Volcano” (spicy) beef hot dog, battered and covered with Frosted Flakes (and I’m assuming deep fried), lol. It usually comes covered with a bunch of tasty sauces and seasonings, but i ordered the sauces on the side so the dogs didn’t get soggy in transit. Im guessing 290 cals for what i ate? P.S. i also had a more-approved restaurant-made greek salad for lunch-ish that I shared with Mr. that I didn’t take a pic of (it was meh, i like my salads better).

I think it was about vitamins. Not taking them 1 week before surgery.

    my dinner

So I gave the Nuwave a shot tonight, should have taken a picture but I forgot. I took the frozen salmon, put some olive oil on, and Mrs. Dash seasoning, then 25 minutes (from frozen) in the Nuwave, it came out pretty good! I put on some Teriyaki sauce when it was done for flavor and it was good. I think I prefer the pressure cooker though, it comes out more flaky and soft, this was a little tough although I might have put it in for too long. I had a side of corn (3 oz) also with teriyaki sauce, and it was a pretty good dinner!
  7. Ask your doctor because the weird thing is the pre op diet varies sooooo much depending on your program. I was suggested 2-3 shakes a day and one protein meal daily. That meant a meal consisting of 4oz of a protein and 2 oz of low carb vegetables once a day. I was also allowed sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello, and broth. I usually had my shake for breakfast, followed by a lot of Gatorade zero and a jello. Then I had my protein meal for lunch, jello as a snack, protein shake for dinner followed by 1-2 sugar free popsicles all while drinking A LOT of water all day. I rarely drank 3 shakes a day because they make me so constipated. I did have veggie broth every other day to have something savory. God, I don't miss those days. Clothes?

Thank you for saying that. It is very encouraging and the thought of it makes me happy. It’s getting hot in NC and I still have school for one more month. I actually received 4 pairs of pants and 1 shirt and they all need to go back. Your idea to buy the next 3 sizes down is a good one as we wear summer weight here until Thanksgiving. Thank you again. Your comment made me smile!

    Dumping?!

To repeat again, only about 30% of Gastric Bypass patients dump to any degree. Back when I had surgery 50% was the quoted rate, but back then the bypasses were a bit more distal which would make dumping more likely. I am one of the few, the proud, the dumpers! I dump on sugar and fats. Less so on fats. Not enough to dump on cheese, thank goodness. I am glad I dump as it takes sugar off my menu when otherwise I would abuse the crap out of it. While dumping sounds horrible, it's not quite as bad as it sounds. I don't often dump these days as I have a good sense of how much sugar I can consume when. When I am fatigued, stressed, sick, or in other ways out of sorts I dump easier, so at such times I try to be extra careful, but still misjudge and it get's me. When I'm in public I don't do sugars at all, though I don't do them much anyhow. I asked my surgeon for a little extra bypass, a little extra restriction, and dumping. 18+ years later I still dump, my restriction is still in place. I have no clue on the extra bypass. I have dumped on fruit but rarely. My first dumping episode, at about 3 months post-op, was orange juice. Good luck, Tek

    Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first

I'm only a week out, but I was taken off all my diabetes and blood pressure meds the day I had my surgery, and I have to check both twice a day now to watch for any indication I need them back. As of today, literally 20 minutes ago, my blood sugar is 119 and my blood pressure is 128/76!!!!!!!!! So it looks like I'm holding steady completely off those 3 meds!!!!! Massive happy dance going on here I have been on blood pressure meds since 2010 and diabetes meds since 2009. This is AMAZING!!!!!

    Dumping?!

From what I've read, only about 30% of bypass patients and very few sleeve patients dump. Usually on sugar but also on high fat foods, for some people. From what I can tell, it's best to eat "new" foods at home the first time in case they don't agree with your new tiny tummy (this is true even if you don't dump - some things can make you throw up: I ate some dry chicken a few weeks after surgery and threw up!). If I were you, I'd be very careful with what I ate when out of the house, and "experiment" more when I was near my own bathroom!

    IS THIS NORMAL?

I'm 7 days post op, and for the last 2 days I can take much larger sips. I was very limited the first 3 days. VERY. Day for was better, and yesterday and today I can drink even more. Still not as much as I could before surgery, but a lot more than I could right after.

    Dumping?!

So I want to know more about this dumping thing. When I was getting ready for surgery my doctor never mentioned anything about it, and none of the information he gave mentioned it either. A couple months before my surgery I started reading about it in forums like this one, and it seems like an awfully major thing to not mention. So I brought it up to the some of my doctor's nurses and all I got was cagey non-answers. So I had the surgery, doing pretty good, getting in the protein and water groove and lost 45 pounds in 5 weeks. BUT I'm sacred to death of dumping and this casts a shadow over trying anything new. I ate 4 cherries the other day because they were so good, but I worried the whole time because someone on this site said they dumped on cantalope. I was fine with the cherries, btw. I'm worried that I may be at work or awya from home and have a bout of dumping which would be really bad. What I want to know is: 1. Do ALL gastic bypass patients dump? 2. What is the riskiest thing to eat: sugary things (including fruit) or oily stuff? 3. What if you were away from home and dumped? Has anyone experienced this? I'm not planning to binge on sweets or grease, I'm happy with my wait loss and want to continue it. I just want some answers so I don't continue to be so fearful about eating. Thanks for any imput!!
  15. Me too - really noticed this over the last couple of weeks - I thought there was something wrong with my office chair! Also bath sheet wrapping around me completely with an overlap. And the tiniest sliver of light between my mid-thighs even when I press my legs together. Amazing what encourages people, isn't it?

    Clothes?

Honestly, you are likely to lose weight so quickly it might be a good idea to exchange them for one of each of the next 3 sizes down!
  17. They really can be amazingly different. I wasn't even asked to stick to only liquids - I was allowed 800 calories in whatever form I wanted for 2 weeks and then I think a liquid/low residue diet for a couple of days beforehand (hard to remember now!) Good luck - some people find it really tough, I was fine with it because I was all 'eyes on the prize' after my surgery was cancelled 2 months previously.
  18. Actually, because I was dealing with a lot of hunger, my surgical center said it would be okay for me to eat plain, non-starchy veggies between meals, but because of my travel (and also my dental issues!) I have had a lot of trouble doing that. It's been drilled into me so well not to graze, so I think I've just been eating a lot at meals (Not A LOT, just ... maybe 3 oz of meat, 3 oz of veg, but it still hurts, especially fruit and salad, which I love). I am going to try to slow down some more, see if that helps. The other thing I'm struggling with is how nauseous I get from my multivitamin. I would say about once a fortnight I will actually throw up. I've tried three different brands, and the best I've found is to take it with a heavy snack before bed. This week it's been low sugar trail mix, which I never ate before surgery, but seems to work well for me now.

    TMI question 🙋‍♀️

Currently 4 days post op. I immediately began taking a stool softener once home from the hospital. I took one with each shake and had 2 BMs on day 2 post op and another one today on day 4. I'm also adding Benefiber to my morning water. I'm actually surprised I didn't have issues with constipation because historically I do. My gastro had me on Miralax daily before surgery which I plan to resume at the two week post op point unless I need it sooner.

Do you ever "forget" you had surgery?

When I'm hungry I eat. I eat to my plan which became my normal way of eating by about 6 months post-op. I eat my meals but rarely until I am full. Full is not comfortable so I try not to get there. The content of my meals are as they were 6 months post-op, but it's not as if I measure anything. I don't count calories or grams. I haven't done so since about 3 months post-op. All my choices and habits were built because of Gastric Bypass 18+ years ago, but it's the habits I pay attention to now, not the surgery then. When I am full it's because I am full. This is how full feels. I eat what and how I eat because it's what and how I eat. Ask a Non-op why they eat the way they do now. Ask them how full feels. Does it hurt? It's the way it is. For me the question was "Does eating ever feel normal again?" Yes. A new normal, but yes. Good luck, Tek
  21. All the time. But honestly, i forgot about having “the surgery” not much after i stopped feeling the surgery recovery pains. After losing a bunch or weight and no longer hating food (around 3 months post), it just sort of became a new normal, you know? But at the same time, I will always identify as a WLS patient, its just not forefront in the mind. Time (and repetition) changes what is normal. Im not sure if i made any sense with all that, but it’s the best i can do and it makes sense to me, lol.

I just saw this comment. What is it that your surgeon says to start the week before surgery?

    Slider foods and dumping

Slider foods are not directly linked to dumping foods. Dumping foods are easy to identify if you dump which I do. Sugars and fats are what can make me dump. Symptoms include palpitations, sweating, chills, fatigue, diarrhea. For me they also don't last that long, perhaps 30 minutes to 2 or 3 hours, usually an hour or two after eating / drinking the offending food. Dumping is not consistent in that I will be more likely to dump when I am fatigued, sick, or stressed. Even a change in medications can throw me off enough to make dumping easier. Dumping helped keep me on the straight and narrow. Candy, cookies, cakes, are just not appealing anymore. I can eat a bite if something does appeal, more than that and I risk dumping which is something not to be experienced eating out. Slider foods are as the name implies, foods that once you chew them just slide through easily making it easier to eat more and more. These types of foods were very much discouraged as they were generally empty nutritionally. Slider foods are dangerous as their nature is eating more and more. It's like the Lay's tag line "You can never eat just one... bag." and eating more and more of anything was contrary to what I was trying to achieve. Since slider foods are easy to eat and eat they can be a trap. I can't say I avoid slider foods completely, but I generally avoid them because I don't need them getting in my head. @Tomo you are indeed dumping on cereal. I also dump on cereal to about the same degree, so I generally avoid it. Good luck, Tek

My surgeon's office recommends to start the week before surgery because will not be able to take them the 1st week or 2 after surgery while our stomach's are healing.

I've been on my pre-op liquid diet for almost a week now and while it's not the easiest thing in the world I'm using this exact mindset. Glad to hear your surgery went well!
