Can someone explain PB powder, how you use it, benefits, etc?
jess9395 replied to LisaMergs's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I don't like that when they take the fat out they add sugar. I used to use it a bit, mixed with Greek yogurt as a dip or sprinkled in oatmeal or a protein shake... Now I just use real no sugar added peanut butter or Syntrax matrix PB Cookie protein powder -
Puree stage - any recommendations?
kmvalade replied to cuchas's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ate yogurt, cream of wheat, got homemade Soups from the grocery store, applesauce, drank 2 Protein drinks a day (Premier Protein 30gms) SF pudding, at that phase I wasn't really hungry. A little bit goes a long way. I spoiled myself with mashed potato and gravy from KFC. I couldn't deal with mashing things that have texture. I looked at baby food but it is so high in calories, carbs, sugars it's not worth it. Best of luck on your journey! -
I just had my surgery 9/5 so I am not at your stage yet. However, I do know the recommendations on my bariatric group's plan calls for everything other than the Protein shake/jello/yogurt to be pureed from after 14 days and for 4 weeks hence. Maybe pureeing the food would work. You are eating the food as recommended but just a little more broken down. Most pureeing recipes call for a drop of broth to moisten the food once the tuna, chicken etc is put in the blender I definitely second the advice on sipping. They say being dehydrated is going to make everything harder if not dangerous and I bet digestion is one of those things that is harder. You are so lucky you have your wife doing it at the same time. Even though she is tolerating the un pureed food maybe she will enjoy it better. Good luck and love to hear how it goes

Just being goofy
I can do this too! replied to confusedturtle3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I always thought the size of those cups of yogurt were sort of a joke! Who could ever just eat one and be full. Now I know, sometimes I can’t even a full cup of yogurt! -
My diet is very similar to yours in the sense I have to do just the shakes and yogurt too; however I have to drink their shakes. I plan to drink premier after surgery. The banana flavor is pretty good! Want to try strawberry

My husband isn't being supportive
Kristy29 replied to Kristy29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I have some friends here, but they aren't what I would consider close friends. People at work, etc. They aren't the kind of people I would turn to for support with my surgery. Yes, they might see me and say some encouraging things if I've lost weight, but they aren't the kind of people I will unload on if things are going wrong or if I'm struggling. My husband would be who I would choose to turn to in those instances, but I am afraid that the whole time I am going through the weight loss, if I mention to him that something hurts or I am hungry or something, he will say see you are failing, why don't you just quit. We had another argument today about it. He kept pointing out that I haven't started a real diet yet, and he doesn't see how I am going to lose 15 lbs in 3 months. Which yes, I am still not eating great, but I am trying a little. I am trying to do this slow, because every time I get gung ho into a diet from the start and then get hungry and fail, so I am trying something different this time, and it is also how my doctor suggests we do it. They said cut out Snacks first. I have tried, but sometimes I am hungry. I work from 4-10, and usually eat lunch around 2 and then dinner around 10:15. So sometimes while I am working I get very hungry. Well the last few times that happened I ate a small bag of plain almonds. Also, a few times when I was hungry at home, I had a pickle or a yogurt. Well, he pointed these things out to me as failures. But I don't think they were failures, because they were better choices than some other foods. I work at a pharmacy, and could easily eat a bag of chips, Cookies or candy, it's everywhere. But instead I chose to eat one of the very few healthy snacks we carry. And really, does he think that me eating a pickle is what's going to prevent from losing weight?? -
3 weeks out. Lost weight then gained!

So getting back on normal foods, wondering what kind of cereal to try.
pookybear replied to Sunlight61's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like Fiber One protein cereal. I get the cranberry one. I don't put milk or yogurt in it, I just eat it like granola. -
Protein, Protein, Protein
TijuanaPlication replied to CarolinaSleeve's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Greek yogurt makes a nice snack, especially if you're early out. Greek yogurt has double to protein of standard yogurt. HTH -
Don't beat yourself up about slipping...it happens to us all! Start with 2 liquid protein shakes and one small meal of grilled fish/chicken and lots of veggies. I found the 4 oz. size cups of yogurt a necessity if I really needed something between. Hang in there! You will be fine.

Has WLS Helped your autoimmune and endocrine issues?
mylighthouse replied to norcaligirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That's great that you already have the healthy diet under control. I changed the way I ate before surgery.... had a meeting with my nutritionist a couple of months before surgery and she helped me so much. I started cutting back on the amount of carbs that I was eating (cut out all starchy veggies) and focused on high protein foods and healthy veggies. I was able to drop 20 pounds a month and a half before my surgery (my surgery was on November 14). Now at almost 5 months out, I focus on a high protein, low carb diet. As you probably know, they want you to get at least 60 grams of protein a day after surgery. I am getting 90-100 grams of protein a day, which has really helped me to drop the weight. I eat about a 3 ounce portion of protein (sometimes less) for lunch and dinner. Starting with my meat first, and then I am only able to eat a few bites of non-starchy veggies before I get full. I eat mostly chicken, sometimes fish or boiled plain shrimp, and sometimes steak or even the occasional piece of pork loin. I have never been a big breakfast eater, so I usually just have a few almonds and part of a Premier chocolate protein shake for breakfast. Eating high protein helps you stay full longer and low carbs keep you from really getting hungry. I also use Isopure non flavored protein powder to get my extra protein in. That stuff is awesome! When I first had my surgery, I was on full liquids for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of pureed food, then 2 weeks of "soft" food. Then after that, I went to regular food. During the liquid, pureed and soft food, I used to eat cottage cheese, plain lowfat low carb/low sugar yogurt and a piece of string cheese everyday. I don't really eat those foods anymore, and because I've had such terrible constipation problems, I've had to cut all cheese out of my diet. -

I need to get serious
angelmama replied to hopetolose's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Connie: I had my surgery 9 months ago and I just want to tell you not to stop eating everything. The key is moderation. Try things, just a bite or two 5-7 minutes apart. Unfortunately popcorn won't be one of them. Don't deprive yourself or you will figure out a way to eat it anyway. I enjoy trying things just a bite or two but I pick my battles for example I won't waste my time on store bought items but will try a friends homemade something. I eat small portions 2.5 to 3 hours apart and I really don't have to fight hunger. I am able to resist things that I know aren't good for me. Try Isopure, it tastes like gatoraide and got me through many a day when I didn't get enough Protein in.(many flavors). Something no one told me, after a fill you will be on liguid for 24 hours. Ididn't plan for that the first time. Good luck. I don't regret my decision for a minute. I am down 50lbs and feeling great. Try eating a 4 oz yogurt taking a bite every 5 minutes for the two weeks. It fills you up and gets you in practice for eating slowly. That is the key to success. -
I need to get serious
hgranola replied to hopetolose's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am in a similar situation as the original poster and I have to say that your suggestion about eating the yogurt bites 5 minutes apart sounds like a good idea. I just went to Trader Joes and bought Fat Free Greek Yogurt cups and I think I'll do that for Breakfast tomorrow! I really intended for today to be the start of my pre-op self imposed diet but I failed because I went shopping hungry. -
Goodness, I can go days without even noticing how or what I am eating and then wham, the restriction is intense and that knot in my stomach feeling is there again. Not Complaining as I am glad it is still there but man I didn't enjoy that feeling the first several months. I still get a kick out if eating a yogurt cup and knowing my stomach can't/won't hold another bite.

Thanks for your list. Very much like the PreOp things. :DRonda My surgeon gave me a grocery shopping list for things to have on hand after surgery. Keep in mind each surgeon's diet plan is a bit different, but here are some things from my list: skim milk plain Greek yogurt (or CarbMaster) egg substitute fat-free cottage cheese Water packed tuna lean beef, chicken, turkey, fish (for blending/puree) carrots or green Beans (again for blending) low sodium tomato sauce low sodium vegetable soup low sodium V8 unsweetened canned fruit unsweetened applesauce cream of wheat oatmeal (old fashioned) cream of rice mashed potatoes (made with chicken broth, no butter or sour cream) winter squash or sweet potatoes low fat mayo or low fat miracle whip crystal light sugar free kool aid sugar free hot chocolate sugar free popsicles sugar free syrup flavorings sugar substitute flavoring extracts true lemon packets Protein supplement

THIS! I think I tried/sampled 10 -15 different Proteins until I got what I liked. My current favorite is Isopure unflavored. I can mix it with anything. Water, tea, coffee, Soup, yogurt, etc.... Protein powder mixed in 0% greek yogurt is a terrific protein punch. That doesn't make any sense.

My surgery was Aug 1st
Candygyrl replied to Tonya2B Fit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Tonya2bfit I had tons of noises post op. IT was quite embarrassing because I've always had a quiet gut. As far as hunger it may be hard to tell right now with being on full liquids. You may notice it less as your diet advances and trust me you will be able to tell when you're full which is why you want to learn early on to undereat your sleeve. When I was at your stage I was tolerating about 1/4 cup of soup, cream of wheat or applesauce etc. For something like yogurt, I'd eat what I could and come back to it after about 20 min to finish it off. in between, I was sipping Water, and Protein shakes. I will admit I was feeling this sort of spasm in my upper stomach that felt almost like a cross between a burp and a hunger pang. I didn't know what the heck was going on. It did calm down as time went on and I now notice it less frequently and ONLY when I haven't eaten for awhile. Make sure you are eating enough and make sure you are taking your Prilosec. I just learned about silent GERD so some of the symptoms you described may be related. -
I had surgery on 10/10/11. I have had 3 fills since then totaling 2.7cc's. My PA initally put in 3 cc's at my first fill, but Water wouldn't pass so she took 1cc out. Then, I got .5cc at my second and .2cc at my third. So far, I have noticed I need to chew well and slow down. I have gotten stuck a few times from eating too fast, but it has not helped with keeping me full for hours. I still get hungry about 2 or 3 hours after a meal. When will the band start helping me stay full? This is my biggest problem. When I force myself to wait for the next meal and struggle through the hunger pains, I find myself eating fast because I'm starving and then I get stuck. My foods consist of Protein shakes, cottage cheese, plain greek yogurt, tuna, chicken, salads, cheese sticks, Protein Bars, and nuts. I think I'm overeating sometimes because I try to eat more thinking that it will hold me over longer. I have only lost 20 pounds since surgery (about 5 pounds a month) and my stomach is still always growling. When will the physical hunger go away??

Unflavored Protein
dolphintattoo replied to ireallywannabthin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use unflavored whey protein from GNC, I add it to soups, mashed potatoes, shakes, yogurt etc. it has a milky taste so I try to add it to things with an underlying milk taste so its more masked. -
Hi Everyone, I am 19 days post op and only lost 10lbs. I am so confused as I am meeting my protein and water requirements. I'm on soft foods but usually drink protein, greek yogurt and eggs (starting to hate eggs). Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

My surgeon performs an EGD after being banded for one year to check that my band is where it's supposed to be...I had it last Wednesday (7 days ago)...since then I have had difficulty eating....as in if its "good" for me - it's going to get stuck or make me feel extremely full after eating maybe 1/2 cup....and eventually make me throw up...not only do I get the "stuck" feeling..but my stomach actually hurts. Normally every morning I eat a greek yogurt before I take my morning meds. .yesterday I couldn't even eat the yogurt. This morning I'm having trouble drinking coffee, but I think that's because I tried to eat a small baked chicken breast for dinner last night and it's still hanging around..... My question is, has anyone else ever experienced this after having an EGD? If so, how long did it last and did you do anything ? I almost feel like maybe I'm too tight right now..I know my stomach/band is irritated and swollen but is this a normal experience after an EGD?

A very interesting evening for me...
LilMissDiva Irene replied to LilMissDiva Irene's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks all for the well wishes. So far so good! I only had coffee, Water and some unjury chicken Soup today. I'm feeling fine at this point. mp8, congrats on the no donuts!! Stay away from them as long as you can... LOL To anyone who was lactose intolerant pre-surgery... beware! It might not even hit right away, but when it does... WOWZAAA!!! I might stay away from milk entirely now. That was just awful. However the moootopia does sound interesting. I've tried Silk before but it was nasty. LOL As far as dairy products, I've not had one single issue. cheese or yogurts seem ok so far. I never eat Cottage Cheese, so I'm not sure about that one. I haven't tried Ice Cream, but since that always upset my stomach the most pre-surgery I almost cringe about trying it now! OmG... which can't be such a bad thing. I hear that's the easiest to get down and so full of sugar and calories. No harm done there. Fleur, yes at least is was the SF type. I still eat my SF Fudgesicles when I feel the need. No biggie. BBJ, I'm positive it was the sugar in your dessert. I noticed in the few times I'd indulged in sugar I really didn't feel that great after. After last nights episode, I really REALLY don't want anything to do with all that anymore... aughh!! Lila, I'm so scared to go through that again, I'll not even experiment with Lactaid or whatever... ;o) -
i love the coffee flavored one too, but my nutritionist only allows dannon light and fit. the oikos has too much sugar (like 19g, i think?) so she said to take a few spoonfuls and mix it with regular greek yogurt so i'm still getting the taste, just not the sugar.
