    Struggling after surgery

I too struggle with a big sweet tooth. Best bet is to not buy candy/desserts...instead buy sugar free pudding or sugar free jello. Bc your pouch only fits so much a few spoon fulls should get your pouch satisfied and quench that sweet urge. Doesn’t mean that occasionally you can have a bite or two of a dessert but my suggestion would be to not have that stuff regularly or kept in your house where temptation can creep up on you. Keep strong and do the best you can do...everyday is a learning exp and trying to retrain your brain and bad habits. Bad habits have been the hardest for me as well...specifically sweets...skittles etc. I’m a work in progress too. I struggle daily too but I just try my best every day...sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fall down...but I get back up and tomorrow is a new day. Good luck and YOU CAN DO THIS!!😊👍🏻
  3. Yes!!!! Yes!!! And more yes!!! I am so moody and irritable bc of seeing no loss so far even though I'm doing what I'm supposed to!! I'm so grouchy and wondering wth I did all this for!
  4. Well say Hi to another, I had my RnY September 5th, 2 weeks in I started saying "Something is Wrong", they discounted me at first, I was impatient, I should know I was still swollen inside, my surgeon had said I could progress to Stage 3 foods, every time I tried. it came right back up, only could handle broths in and other fluids, even choked a few times on applesauce with my meds ground up. Finally, I suspect to shut me up, they scheduled an Endoscopy on October 12th, well Surprise Surprise I had a stoma stricture, that's why nothing was getting through, plus I had multiple ulcerations in my jejunem, and I grabbed a hold of that Tornado's Tail and I'm still riding it. Multiple endoscopies, still strictured, they have tried twice to dialate it but it kept tightening back up, end of November, November 28th in fact, I was not digesting my p.o. protein, malnourished, dehydrated, and my happy hoo-hah and me got to be a return guest of the Bariatric and Gastrointestinal floor 10 Doan for 6 days, fed by IV the whole time, on November 28th a PICC line was installed, TPN was started and I am still on it 2+ months later, 12 hour feedings, 12 hours off every day. I have graduated to 1 token pureed meal a day, odd days a Protein shake, even days homemade pureed soup with extra protein added, this month instead of strainining out veggies I can pureed them into it, but bulk of nutrition is TPN stills Lost 3 pounds mid- December to mid- January, must have been close to a stall because if Doctors scales are correct I dropped 8,3 pounds January 16th to 25th, so although my weight is dropping a lot slower than the beginning, it still decreases, down over a 100 pounds from my life highest weight in October 2017, maybe 50+ s8nce surgery, so that's a lot better than I expected. Starting to resemble 2 of my dead relatives, don't recognize ME anymore but am going to keep hanging around and losing until I find out WHO I AM inside. Might take a year to 18 months to reach my goal, but now I know I will live long enough to do it! March 2020 I am going to be dy-no- mite, just wait and see!👙😛👚👖

    Rant/FOMO

Cleaned out my whole closet and drawers this weekend. Tried on some capris I wore a week before surgery at Universal...they were so big on me. Def made me see the results even more that way. I wasn’t sad getting rid of my big clothes. Someone saw me today in Target who hasnt seen me in a while and asked if I was “ok” bc of the weight diff. Once she found out I was ok she said I looked great. Think it’s just that I look very diff. I don’t feel like I look sickly at all But guess when you see yourself in the mirror day after day it’s hard to see all the changes someone who doesn’t see you all the time sees.

100 lbs in under a year?

Well insta___adventurer I'm pleased for you, that is a very nice loss since July, looks like you may be in Onederland before long. And when you are please post, I'll be cheering for you! Currently my next baby goal is 250, I'm 260- something, maybe 268, maybe a little less, I lost 8 pounds in one week if the doctors scales are correct, only lost 3 mid December to mid-January, but I'll take it anyway. Kinda sad, before surgery I was heading toward death by obesity, the end of November either I wasn't using the protein I was eating or I malnourished myself, ended up hospitalized for almost 6 days, and gained a PICC line for TPN nourishment through an site in my upper left arm. Dang it, I couldn't even lose weight correctly, guess I could not do THAT right! So now I'm losing slower and healthier, but still on a losing path.12 hours fed through my portable pump, 12 hours to run errands, make a stab at housecleaning, cooking for Tomkitten, microwaving my small p.o. intake, I alternate days, odd days it's a protein shake, even a homemade soup slightly pureed with protein powder. But the majority of my nutrition is TPN to allow my ulcerations in my jejunem and stoma- strictured pouch to heal. Before long I expect they will be weaning me off the supplement and back to varied foods as soon as they say I'm healed, maybe 2 more dilatations? But I am trying to be peaceful, accepting, approaching it in a calm manner, my surgeons have a plan, they know they can handle this challenge, so I know I can too. Finally found another prtein shake I can stand, strawberry Ensure HIGH PROTEIN. Actually tastes pretty close to Strawberry Quik & Little Frustr8 used to 💘 that stuff! One of the few Without that fakey evaporated milk taste I grew to HATE. I used to enjoy Premier Protein until my verdompt Wal-Mart deleted all flavors except vanilla and chocolate. And NEVER buy their house brand Equate, that stuff is nasty and foul-tasting. One of my September friends spilled Equate on her floor, neither the Car or Dog would lap it up, and she told me '"Poochie even eats garbage and he wouldn't touch it "so animals even think it's BAD.
  7. Oh most certainly. I even started calling myself crazy bc I was the only one who didnt see it. Even with my clothes dragging. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

  9. I would take a long look at what you are eating and drinking. Don't do that BS food funeral nonsense, throw in some more exercise and check your blood sugars every day to make sure you are keeping on track.

    Has this happened to you?

The fluid did not come back but I ended up back in the hospital Bc my intestines were very inflamed.
  11. I second the idea of whey protein isolate (lactose free) over vegan proteins! I'm not a big fan of soy in any form cuz of the implications of it and flax with hormone positive bc!
  12. Patience is a virtue, but at 73 the rest of my vitue is long gone, living on grit, determination, 12 hours of TPN a night and hoping my story will end as well as my Bari-Bud 🐭🐱(aka MouseCat), so so proud of Her success! Oh got to believe it's only a Matter of Time, never planned to be like this 5 months out from surgery. And oh it started out So Good , 2 weeks in. my stoma strictured, the ulcerations started , they should have known , I already had a gastric ulcer I named Hector in the stomach part bypassed, went in with DX of Gastritis, took me off my PPI Dexilent, put me on their ineffectual Omeprazole, may work for many, never did for ME and I have been hanging on the tail of a tornado every since! And when will it END, IDK but sure wish I did! So I chug-a-chugging along on a limited Stage 2 diet, liquids and thin purees once a day, sustained largely on the calories and nutrition from TPN fed through a PICC line in my upper Left Arm. Been there for 2 months yesterday, possibly for 2 more months, at least that was the last recommendation I was given last Friday at my EGJ, 9th endoscopy lifetime, 6th at OSU. Well to be technically correct Transnasally July 2013 EGD June 2015 EGD December 2017 those 3 were at my local Community Hospital KCH in Mount Vernon EGD immediately prior to RnY surgery September 5 2018 by Dr Needleman EGJs because post RnY duodenum is no longer accessible, only your jejunem, the 2nd section of Small Intestine Those were October 12, October 26, November 9th, November 28, that's when I was bad enough I was hospitalized and PICC l8ne inserted next day, all these done by Sabrena Noria MD, my surgeons partner who just 💞doing endoscopies. And lastly January 25 2019 by their Senior Resident Noah J Stinson MD, Dr Noria was over- booked, I guess. He wasn't too bad, this time they attempted stretching my stomal stricture part way, did it work permanently? Doubtful, Dr Noria tried in October, snapped right back where it was before, a virtual pinhole that lets only liquids through. Does THIS happen often? Oh I am so dang special I nearly stink, and I did not request to be! I WANT to be like all the others out there, my surgery day twins are on Stage 4 or Normal diets, and I'm lagging behind. Wahhh!😪😥💦
  13. Good afternoon, my name is Mousecat and I am a cat addict. I live alone and I just have to give a public forum shoutout to my two kitties for being my crutch through all the post-op BS (and life BS in general). I have an (almost) 10 year old boy named Mouse who I rescued from a Baltimore City shelter at 8 weeks. He was very sickly and I nursed him to health. He has been everywhere with me and is my rock. My other boy is Nugget who is a year and a half and I found him in my mom's backyard at 3 weeks old and bottlefed. He had a number of near-death scares and I am embarrassed to say how much $$ I spent keeping him alive. He is my goofy boy. I just don't know what I would do without them. Mouse know when I am sad or sick and will be glued to me the whole time. Nugget is a derp and makes my home joyful. Any special fur kids in your life? I am so grateful for their furry little existence.
  14. I was in the same boat for a while- I read everything I could get my hands on and almost everything said the same thing....to be patient. And to be honest, I wasn't happy about that bc.....come on!!!!!! I was eating around 450-800 calories a day and I thought for sure with the severe deficit I'd see some great losses. Nope. I stalled at losing only 30lbs in the first weeks (preop/postop) for nearly a month. I started to increase my calories- I began to eat more times during the day, which quite frankly scared me to death. After I did that- I've had steady weight loss (67 lbs total since 11/29). The last thing you want to hear is to be patient, but stick it out!
  15. I heard that too. In my coffee I’m gradually switching from sweet n low to truvia. Right now I’m at two truvia and one sweet n low. I use to be three sweet n low. I did read to try and stay away from artificial sweeteners. Today I am logging what I eat. I stopped doing that and I’m going to start back up. Hoping that helps me not snack. I think the snacking is more habit bc it happens mainly when I get home from work while cooking dinner and later in the evening.
  16. So I was sleeved on 7/23/18. SW:238, Pre op weight 221, CW 162. Goal is 138. I've lost 75 pounds and have been doing good with weight loss. I recently order a couple cookbooks and I noticed in it said that you should not snack and to only have three small meals a day. The small meals are fine but I mainly snack to get more protien in as I know I don't get enough daily. Curious what others do. Part of me says I'm doing good bc the scale is moving in the right direction...but the other part of me thinks am I doing something wrong...last thing I want is months down the road to slowly start gaining again. Biggest fear is gaining all the weight bk and looking like a failure...... Advice?

    Jan 2019 bypass buddies

I just had my surgery on the 24th. I’m in British Columbia, Canada. I had the sleeve in February 2017 and just had a revision due to acid reflux. I was initially with a doctor in Victoria, who was useless. Went to see him for 7:years and went nowhere. Appointments were maybe 3 minutes long if you’re lucky and I live 8 hours plus a 2 hour ferry ride away! Switched to Dr. Sampath in Richmond in the summer of 2015. Had my orientation in October 2016 and sleeved Feb 2017. Amazing man. Covered by medical services plan in BC as health related. Was over 300 lbs.

Anyone get a March date yet?

My favorite always and still is Premier Protein, I especially like liked their Peaches and Cream and Caramel, Wal-Mart where I usually shop, in their one stupidity deleted almost all flavors but vanilla and chocolate, BORING! I have also liked Muscle Milks flavors. I have been on shakes since Hector was a pup, and after 5 months Hector (my imaginary 🐕) is nearly grown up but my tummy isn't. I could get my flavors off of Wal-Mart.com, buy them at Sams Club(23 miles north) or Costco in Columbus(48 miles SE) but nary a one in Mount Vernon where I live. I haven't checked out GNC, we have one in Knox Village Square, only excuse I have is they might be expensive, today I used my on-line coupon from Ensure, they have a strawberry protein Plus, not as much protein as Premier Protein but calories are too bad, and Joy Joy they have strawberry, I'll let you know if I like it. Claricey, I am a patient-type birdie with a slightly wounded digestion now, I have ulcerations in my jejunem, the second section of small intestine used for bypasses, don't worry, it is NOT that commin, so I am fed basically 12 hours a night on Total Parenteral Feeding through a vein in my upper left arm, been that way for 2 months the 29th. This gives my GI system less stress, had a follow-up endoscopy, have them every 2-4 weeks, they are seeing improvement, were able to stretch my stomal stricture where my pouch and intestine connect slightly, maybe a couple more attempts and I can expand my diet further along, I am allowed either a shake or soup once a day, but my major calories are"piped in". Really not THAT BAD, gotten used to it, I would not probably not starved to death from inability to digest my proteins correctly and malnourishment, alas there is TOO MUCH of me for that to happen, but I ran a strong risk of it affecting my ❤ and that would have been "curtains" for me. So I am very grateful for the intervention, and that my Surgeon Dr Bradley J Needleman and his partner(who does my endoscopies( Dr Sabrena Noria that they knew just what to do. I'll make it through, just a little bumpy now. But you do have to be odd to be #1, so I try to be upbeat with what I Have.😝🌈🍀

    "You're too skinny!"

Yeah, I got the same bs from my family for awhile. Two days after surgery my sister goes "It doesn't seem like the surgery is working for you." Naturally I respond "Its only been two days, you dipshit." At the end of the day rude comments from family bother me less than those from aquiantances. December 2018 Sleevers!

Sophie, I enjoyed recipes with a bit of spice kick to it, but now the foods with a small amount of spice, I can feel the insides burn a little so I have been trying to avoid them all together. I am going to have to come up with something bc this is disheartening to me. Thank you! Sent from my SM-G930VL using BariatricPal mobile app

    "You're too skinny!"

Anyone else getting these weird back-handed compliments? Work started back up for me today and I got a lot of "Oh, you're wasting away/too skinny/ etc. comments. Which are all bs anyways because I'm still technically "obese" according to my bmi. Why are people so rude? How do you guys respond to comments like these? #rantingaway Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    December 2018 Sleevers!

I get full quickly, but I do get hungry. I am not sure about how long it takes for me to get hungry after a meal--but it's usually in the evening when I feel particularly hungry. I had my week 3 stall for 5 days, now I think I am in week 6--so, it's another little stall. No big deal. I think this is just par for the course. I lost 6.5 pounds last week, so I expected a stall around now. I am sure the losing will start up again in a day or two. If not all do something to change up my diet a bit to get things going again. Probably adding more fiber to my diet would help! Hey Lolo, I agree that weight is lost in the kitchen, not the gym (technically the gym helps with weight loss too, but only if you stick to a solid diet plan). I am at the gym for 2 hours a day (because I take a 20 minute warm up on the elliptical or treadmill (moderate intensity), take a 45min-1 hour spin class (high intensity), then probably 30 minutes of weight training (4-5x a week) (I do cardio everyday, but only 4-5 times a week of weight training). There is a few minutes of down time between each activity, so the total minutes adds up. This is my "ME" time (the only ME time I get in the day). I feel great and I am starting to get some muscle tone and definition. I am also definitely improving my strength and endurance, which is important to me and is definitely a health benefit. I have watched Dr. Vuong's videos, including his video on why WLS patients shouldn't exercise for at least 6 months. To be honest, I am not a big fan of Dr. V. He might be a great surgeon, but he's also a full of himself and a big self-promoter. He puts out videos with controversial topics just to get his YouTube views up (IMHO). A prime example is his video entitled "Real Talk: Why You Should Not Exercise After WLS". Seriously, tell me that title isn't begging for views when every other bariatric surgeon in the world encourages their patients to exercise, including Dr. Matthew Weiner (another YouTube surgeon that I respect). Frankly, Dr. V has some good advice on nutrition and post-op dieting (that I largely agree with), but he is also full of crap half the time and much of his advice is based on broad assumptions and generalizations about WLS patients and how he believes we think and feel. His primary reason why WLS patients should not exercise is because he believes that for us, exercise (particularly) is a form of punishment that we inflict on ourselves or something we feel we have to do because that's what society expects. For some weight loss patients, maybe this view is true, but it certainly does NOT apply to many of us (yourself included!!). He also assumes that we have no idea what we are doing in the gym and we should not start working out in a gym until we can afford to work with a personal trainer. I think this might be a good advise for any person (WLS patient or not) that has never worked out before and has no idea what they are going to do when they get to the gym besides walk on a treadmill for 15 minutes. However, to suggest this should be a rule that applies to WLS patients in general is total BS. Clearly, Dr. V incorrectly assumes that all we did as obese people was sit on a couch and eat all day. That may be true for some WLS patients, but many of us had active lives even when we were at our heaviest and even went to the gym (we just couldn't lose weight and keep it off effectively). We are not all people that could have been cast on "My 600 Pound Life". Anyway, I can keep going when it comes to Dr. V--but I won't.
  24. Well, folks, I had my RNY in July, 2014. I started at 302 pounds. I finally, finally, FINALLY, F I N A L L Y!!!, hit onederland this morning!!! I stalled out 2 years ago at around 205, and never lost another ounce. Bounced between 205 and 215, and just got fed up. Went back on my post-RNY regimen around Thanksgiving, and this morning was 199.8!!!!! I cannot believe it!! I never thought I’d see the scale dip below 200. 4.5 years, but, if you work at it, and just stick to the program, it will work!!! *hugs for everyone!!!!* Carmen

    Period won't go off

I had ablation in 2010 with tubal. Was told by Dr that after surgery first one or 2 could be heavy. Yep happened. Month 3 period spotting period spotting you get the gist all the way to Dec. Have pcos. Went back to gym. Provera to stop it and here I am 47 and back on birth control. Ultrasound showed 2 small fibroids says not big enough to be the issue. Biopsy on Wed of lining. Mine def grew back per the ultrasound. She won't redo the ablation. I don't like her suggestion as not a guarantee to stop spotting. She tells me usually wls corrects pcos. Your body is doing everything it shouldn't be. Ha welcome to my world!! Think I'll be staying on bc until my weight stabilizes then see where I am. I don't expect to see menopause until 52-53.
