Please don't take this the wrong way. Doctors say you can loose 1-2 pounds per week with lap band. You have lost 2 pounds per week; so you are loosing on the high side. This is not bypass surgery. I have been a slow loser. I think this is because I had already lost 100 pounds per surgery. The hard facts are you lost the Water weight presurgery and now this is allllll real fat. It takes either burning off and or not eating 3500 calories before you can loose ONE pound. So in the last two weeks you have burned 14,000 calories. That's a lot. One bandster wrote "Rome wasn't built in day and neither was your butt."
  2. Dawn5115, moving to mushie is so nice. I have now moved to soft foods so I am exploring a few more foods. If you like califlower besure to puree it - tastes really good. You reminded me why I did not tell anyone I have been banded. My family knows but I did not want to be plagued with 'how much have you lost". This is a life changer and a much slower weight lose than gasteric bypass. I do not think the general public understands. Hang in there. How is everyone else doing?

    10 month post-op update

You look GREAT Tiffy! I know from your posts that it was a hard journey to get where you are now from the complications with your revision, but I can tell you appreciate your success sooo much more because of how difficult it was. I agree with everyone that you are a marvelous inspiration. I can't wait for next spring/summer to wear some cute dresses. Like you, I have never experienced that. Oh the little things in life...:tongue_smilie:

    Secret? Yes or No.

Before surgery I told just my close family. I made sure they knew the difference between LapBand & bypass. They were extremely supportive once they understood. Was not sure whether I wanted others to know or not. I think I was waiting to see if it was really gonna work for me. It did! Now I tell everyone. Well, anyone that asks. Then I can explain that I still have to eat right but it's such a great tool. I'm normally a very shy person when it comes to strangers, but boy have I changed!

    Alcohol?? 🤔

Hi I am 5 months into my journey after a bypass. I'm having a few issues but doing ok. I was wondering why alcohol isn't allowed for 12 months? Does it damage your new pouch or is it normal health advice? Can anyone shed any light on this please? Thanks 👍

    Alcohol?? 🤔

I was given the following reasons to refrain from alcohol: (1) empty calories (2) can contribute to worsening GERD (3) metabolization of the alcohol may have undesired effects with your new digestive system (4) risk of transfer addiction. I was not told never to have it again, but to use caution before proceeding. I rarely had alcohol during weight loss phase, I would guess probably less than 10 times the entire time, and these times wouldn't even be an entire regular "serving". It was always dry red wine or gin/vodka with soda (less calories and less carbs). I once had a couple sips of a flavoured soju like 2 months post op and ended up on the bathroom floor for over an hour. Not pretty. I can get tipsy/drunk reeeaaalllly quickly (and on much, much, much less than pre-op). But I also sober up astonishingly quickly as well. 1 drink and I'm def affected. 2 drinks and I'm drunk. But about an hour later I'm totally back to normal again. I'm almost 2 years post op now and I drink fairly regularly (particularly since COVID started!), though I still stick to red wines and spirits with no sugary mixers for the most part (with the exception of Kahlua, an important ingredient in espresso martinis) P.S. I am NOT advocating drinking to all, especially if your team advises against it. Everyone is different and should aim to know their limitations and stay within them. Some may have more trouble with this, which is probably why lots say to just stay away. It can become a slippery slope.... Edited to add: I just realized the title of this thread was for bypass. Oopsies, I'm a sleeve, and I think it may be a bit different, between the two: alcohol will bypass a portion (or all?) of the small intestine in by-passers and go directly to the the large intestine, which results in different alcohol metabolization rates...

    Sleeve vs gastric bypass

There are so many many posts out there on this topic. Please make sure you do your research and spend time with your doctor discussing your personal health history. I planned to go with the sleeve and had my heart set on it. When I met with my surgeon we discussed the fact that I suffered from reflux/Gerd. He recommended that I go with RNY instead. I was devastated and actually got a second opinion from my gastroenterologist who told me the same thing. They both asked me why I was afraid of bypass since it is the gold standard in WLS. I shared my big concern which was malabsorption and of course all the old horrible stories that were out there. I learned very quickly as I researched the heck out of this topic that if you follow the plan, get your labs drawn like you do regardless of which surgery you have, take your Vitamins which you also have to do regardless of which surgery you have, malabsorption will actually help you. I also started reading about how many lap bands and sleeves have to be converted to bypass because of reflux. I wanted to go through this surgery only once. Even if you don't suffer from reflux now, both the band and sleeve can actually cause this issue where the bypass cures it. Only you and your doctor can decide what is right for you, I am only suggesting that you continue to do research like you have clearly already begun. It will be worth it to you in the end. Good luck on whatever choice you make. Please feel free to reach out. P.S. Not everyone struggles with dumping syndrome either. If you do the bypass hoping that will control behaviors as some people do you may be disappointed. I would research that as well.

    Sleeve vs Bypass

I had one surgeon tell me that I needed bypass not vsg. I wasn't comfortable with that. I found a different surgeon who performed the sleeve. I wasn't too keen on having my intestines messed with and he was a great help and supporter.

    CHEW CHEW CHEW

The fear of getting sick is front and foremost, which is why I am leaning towards Gastric Bypass. I am 67 and my bad habits have had plenty of time to become "the normal" which is why I am starting all this so early. The two worse things to have are a toothache and nausea. YUCK!!! Louise

    CHEW CHEW CHEW

I think with any of the surgeries you have to watch how fast and how much you eat. With bypass you have to worry about dumping syndrome so If you love sweets you will have a hard time with that surgery. I am not a candy lover, so it wasn't an issue for me. I went with the DS, which would be a good choice for you because there is no associated dumping syndrome. I will say that I am a month out and I am still experiencing nausea and vomiting daily. Trust me you wont have a problem with inhaling food because you have no room for it. Further into recovery you of course will be able to eat more, but you will have to use self control.
  11. Hello, I am new to this site, but not to surgery as mine was in 2008. My highest weight at surgery was 250lbs. I initially lost 60 lbs in the first 2 months. However once I was anle to eat more foods etc I cheated alot and went back to my old ways. I now am at the weight of 230. Yep pretty close to pre op. I beat myself up about it, but I know it isn't too late. I am trying to limit soda coffee drinks and Desserts. Does anyone have suggestions for yummy desserts that are ok for us to eat? I love chocolate! I have bittled Water and bought sugar free kool aid packets u flavor water with( too plan regular). And suggestions? I have bad arthritis( bursitis in knees and ankylosing dpondylitis cervical spine) which limits exercise however I now swim 1-2 times a week trying to get somewhere. Thank u all! Kristen
  12. I have lapband, so pardon if this doesn't apply to bypass. Why are you concerned that you have no desire to"eat" protein? Lots of times I dont wanna eat anything solid.....but I still get my protein in no problem. I use protein shots. 42 grams in 3 ounces. ...been using them for years. But again, I'm lapband.
  13. The only thing that gives me some relief topically is BioFreeze roll on. I have severe arthritis in my spine. In fact I just had a 3 level cervical fusion 8 weeks ago. I take Tylenol and following bypass surgery, it actually helps. Unfortunately my weight loss has actually caused my back to be more painful. My doctors tell me this is pretty common post weight loss because all the fat was actually providing support. Also you carry yourself different and your more active. On a good note, ankles and knees are much better. Good luck!

    Sleeve vs Bypass

Agree, it sounds like maybe that's the surgeon's preference -- just went to my seminar and the surgeon was very open to either sleeve or bypass, depending on patient's needs/medical issues, etc. It wasn't one is way better than the other -- definitely get a second opinion!

    Water

I am almost three months post op with gastric bypass and I struggle with water too. At first it was easier but the last couple of weeks I have had a hard time
  16. Great topic, I am scheduled for my band to sleeve revision. I think the starting BMI has a lot to do with it too. I would be scared of the 44 size bougie, I really want this to be the last surgery. I get the acid problem with the band though and understand why you choose the large bougie I just do not want to risk it. I am prepared to lose slower than I did with my band, I was told revisions lose slower but your averages sound great. See you on the other side in a couple of weeks!
  17. @@LessOfMe0503 @@fitme Congrats on your decision to improve your life! As I mentioned earlier in this topic, I often attend support group meetings where there are every type of surgery patient's in attendance. I see people ( even some I consider friends ) who have had Sleeve and bypass surgeries who are as big (or bigger) than pre-op. Not to say every band patient is 100% sucessful either, but at least we have another option except being told to diet. You'll see people on this site who get on here and say things such as "my surgeon doesn't do lapbands anymore because they don't work", yet EVERY one I've personally contacted ( and I have contacted several over the years ) tell me quite the opposite. I'm sure there are bariatric surgeons who don't perform band surgeries, but the reason isn't always what is thought. This site used to let you see each person's surgeon, experience level, etc....not anymore. Best wishes!

Welcome. I'm in my 50s (that may be the first time I have ever written that statement) and have a higher BMI than you. I was recently sleeved on April 20. Don't assume that based on BMI that you have to go with the bypass. Everyone is different and your surgeon and research should help you decide on the best procedure for you. Best of luck.

How Bad is the Flight Home?

I had my sleeve surgery on a Wednesday and flew home the Saturday. I had planned on staying longer after my surgery but due to possible plane cancellations (coronavirus) I flew home earlier. Surgeon said I could fly home the Friday if I wanted, I definitely wasn't up to the Friday. Decided to see how I felt the the following day and I felt fine to fly. I travelled solo, so my issue was my suitcase, thankfully I had packed light and used proper manual handling technique to put my case on the belt at check in, and again when picking up the case at arrivals. That was more a drag off the belt and onto the floor. My flight was about 1hr 45minutes - all good there. I didn't need to get up and walk about due to gas pains or anything. I think the biggest worry for you is (1) you don't know yet how you are going to feel after the surgery and if you will be feeling well enough to travel (2) lack of possible social distancing after surgery, not sure I would want the risk of catching covid19 (just after surgery or anytime for that matter) now that it has blown out...hopefully more reined in by then though. (There was only 19 people on my flight home due to massive cancellations back in March and I had no one around at all). What surgery are you having? You may need more time following a bypass? Is your surgeon happy for you to fly four hours after surgery two days before ? Not able to stay an extra night at a hotel somewhere?
  21. Ok, so there is no shame in having a 2nd WLS, but why on earth would she choose the lapband for the 2nd surgery? WHAT DOCTOR in their right mind would suggest this knowing what we know about the high failure rate of the lapband??? I'm just shocked. Anybody else? Poor Carnie... I can only hope she can make this work.... She should have gone w/the sleeve or Duodonel Switch.... http://todayentertainment.today.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/03/21/10796986-12-years-later-carnie-wilson-has-weight-loss-surgery-again

    Why can't we donate blood?

I'm pretty sure it's more or bypass patients since they have such an absorption issue. Most places check your blood to see if you're healthy prior to donating so you should be good.

    Piece of cake!

I was wondering the same thing! My lap band surgery was my only surgery experience and it was AWFUL! I've read that alot of people say that about lap band vs the sleeve revision. Maybe its because you know kind of what to expect. Anyhow, I am super excited and lets see what happens!!!!!! Hugs to you all! xoxoxoxo

    How did you know?

@@Soon2beslimSamantha Thanks! Yes, I am 2 months post op. I had bypass, and I had some complications during and after my surgery, so I was in the hospital for a week. BUT....I made it through fine, and everything has been going well since then. Once I got home from the hospital, things got a lot better. I've actually been through way worse, surgically. I am really pleased with my decision. I have not had true physical hunger since surgery. Not sure how long that will last, but I have to remind myself to eat. I have no real cravings, I am not tempted to cheat, I don't even really care much about food. Sometimes I might say, I want something warm, like Soup...but that's about the extent of a craving. I'm glad of that. I also did a lot of therapy before surgery to deal with food addiction issues, why I got big, and self-comforted with food so many years. That has been the biggest help to me.

    How did you know?

I chose to have lapband surgery . I had diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I did not want to have a radical surgery such as bypass or sleeve at this point in my life. I have been extremely happy with my band and have had no complications or issues. I have been banded 2 1/2 years and I no longer have any health problems. In fact my Primary Physician told me yesterday at my checkup that he couldn't be happier with my labs. Everyone who has weight problems has to make their decision in their own time. I knew at 5'0 and 200 lbs I was on my way to be disabled. Best of Luck to you and I will pray for success.
