    Lapband Vs Sleeve

I was banded for four years prior to revising to sleeve.

    Lapband Vs Sleeve

I don't know your situation, but in answer to your question - yes, I think it is worth it to "try harder" My band experience was not a good one (had it for 10 years!) and i did revise to the sleeve. I have been very very successful with the sleeve, but I think it helped to really examine WHY I didn't do well with the band. Much of it was truly some differences in the two surgeries, I was one of those people who still felt alot of hunger with the band and couldn't tolerate it being filled without having reflux and vomiting. However, I also wasn't well educated in how to truly "work" the tool. When I revised, I picked a surgeon with a good reputation and success rates but ALSO had a good support and education program that went with the surgery. Somehow, something, clicked and I have had very good success and am currently maintaining. Regardless of what you do surgically, you really do need to "work it" and get educated on how to eat. The way that any WLS patient needs to eat to get the kind of success I have had is NOT the typical diet. I have to work out, i have to eat high Protein low carb and I have to keep trigger foods out of my house. I can go on and on, but I think the real "secret" to success is accepting my reality and finding a new lifestyle that supports my success.

    Low Carb Banders Unite

Kiki -- Welcome , I'm pretty new here myself. There's loads of info and support! Please stick around! And congrats on your success! Denise -- The caramel nut chews are in the snack/treat category. I haven't tried any of the Atkins protein bars, yet. I'll have to try the nougat for sure, thanks! I, too, have a problem with constipation. As a matter of fact, I've not been quite right since being banded May 9th. But it definitely worse since I began low carb. I tried some Miralax today, so I'm playing the waiting game for now. I mixed shook it to death in a bottle of Diet Green Tea and it dissolved into nothing! (Which is great because I have a huge texture-phobia and the slightest hint of grain on my tongue would have had me heaving!) Sure hope this stuff works. That could drop off a pound or two! Renewed -- the nutritional content I gave you earlier for the Caramel nut chews are a bit different from the box i just picked up at walmart. And the price was MUCH cheaper. The one I ate earlier was sold as a single at CVS and almost twice the cost per bar. Maybe the pack I just bought is the new revised version? The calories are a bit lower, everything else a bit higher, net carbs are the same. Go figure.
  4. If you are looking to lose that much weight, you might want to consider a sleeve or bypass over the band. Yes, many are doing awesomely with their bands and losing lots, but just as many, if not more, are getting ok-ish to not great results. From all the people I've met in my support group, the band people are consistently the least successful. People are arguing that bypass and sleevers are putting weight back on years later, but that means they haven't actually dealt with their food issues properly. Band patients are just as likely to fall of the wagon and gain it back. You can go get your band tightened more, but there's a point where you can't eat at all, and if you have to go there, you're probably doing more harm than good. I've had my band for two years now and I'm in the process of getting it out. I've had constant restriction problems in that I either have zero restriction or I cannot eat at all, and it's preventing me from eating quality foods like chicken, fish and a good number of veggies. Ironic eh? I paid 18K for my band, so I really wanted to make it work, but after two solid years of Soup and oatmeal, it's got to come out. The pattern I've been seeing is that the band seems to be really good for people who want to lose 50-80lbs. Of course there are people who've lost more than that, but there are always outliers in any statistics. I'm not anti-band at all; I just think it's being marketed out of its effective zone. Keep in mind that a sleeve could always be revised to a DS later on if you find your weight creeps up uncontrollably after surgery, and a band can be put on over a bypass, and I sleeve too I'd imagine. Trust me, I understand you can afford only one surgery... I'm right there with you. I've basically bankrupted myself paying for by band. The only reason I've been able to consider a revision is that I'm Canadian, and sleeves and RNYs are covered here. Band is not. Most of all, talk it over with a doctor who has absolutely zero financial gain in whatever surgery you choose. Clinics for individual weight loss surgeries are selling you a product... of course they're going to tell you whatever surgery they're selling will be appropriate for you!
  5. Just wondering if some of you were approved with BCBS Federal? I was denied and I'm appealing. BCBS FED would not tell me the reason why it was denied they only said, the claim did not meet the criteria. That is all they could tell me over the phone. They said I would have to request this in writing. I am appealing this and asking in writting what was the reason it was not approved. I'm also requesting for a Bariatric Surgeon to be one of the consultants in the Appeal and Grievance Board. The band did not work for me at all. I was always starving. I hated it. I lost 17 lbs and then gained it all back and then some. Has anyone been approved for your revision from band to sleeve with BCBS Federal? Thanks. Thanks.

    Anyone for August 2020

I am scheduled for my revision August 13,2020 . Revision / Gastric Band to Gastric Bypass
  9. I also did very little research on plication. The reason I chose not to is because I live in a fairly small town in Texas. I was afraid it was too new a procedure for my local surgeons to know about. They don't offer it and if I had an emergency post op and couldn't get back to Dr Ortiz, I was worried they would not know what to do. Also my regular dr does all my health needs and I didn't know if he would know enough about it either. But on the plus side of the coin, a girl I was picked up with at the airport had plication the same day I had sleeve revision, and she was released to go home a few days before me and she said she had no pain. But my pain was also minimal. I just took liquid Tylenol and it was enough.
  10. I'm glad I ran across this thread....I had lapband 3 years ago, been dealing with a slipped band for about a year, have gained 25 lbs back. I am devestated. My doc wants me to revise to a sleeve, but I am self pay. We are not rich people and it was a HUGE sacrafice for me to come up with the money for LapBand, no way I can come up with another 14K and be able to look myself in the eye, not when my husband works so hard, we have 2 little boys to take care/plan for. I am beginning to think a conversion to a sleeve in Mexico might be a real alternative for me..... but a little scary and still expsenive. Thanks for all the info and comments.
  11. Hello my name is Maria, and I am pretty new to this website. I just wanted to give a review of Dr. Fernando Garcia with tijuanabariatrics.com. If you ever decide to go with him please do your research. I am not going to say anything on his skills if you are a first time patient. But for revision surgery please consider someone else more experienced. I went to see dr. Garcia for a revision from lap band to sleeve. I payed good amount of money to be promised a sleeve and ended up with God knows what. As soon as I could drink I drank the whole bottle of water and other drinks no problem. They said it was a perfect sleeve and that they used small bougie. I got home I was hungry all the time and drinking all the liquids I could! No restriction whatever. I started to panic and called and emailed Doctor Velazco his helping Doctor. She said don't worry you won't be feeling full on liquids. When you start your purée and solid diet you will feel it. So 2 month out of what was called sleeve surgery I am 35 pounds heavier than before. Of course I started to panic and do my research why I didn't succeed in this. I found dr. Rodriguez through Belight company. And after reviewing my medical history he agreed on doing a bypass on me. When I met him I asked him why do you think I gained so much weight. If I had sleeve I should had stayed at same weight and not gaining no more. He said he won't be able to tell till he is inside of me. What he told me was horrible. Dr Garcia didn't do no sleeve on me. He just folded my stomach in half and saw it and than stitching got undone so half of my stomach was stitched and other was half wasn't. It wasn't even a plication. With plication stomach folded in several folds but what he did to me is not even a surgery. He just put my life in jeopardy because a lot of scar tissue left in there. He didn't clean anything up. Instead of 1 and 1/2 hours my sergeant was working on me for 4 hours!!! I am so hopeful that this was it and I don't have to go through another surgery again!

@@2babutterfly thank you so much for your concern. I guess I'm just scared trying to process the fact fat I may have to have a revision. if it fails and I will be a two time loser. I did get some fluid through maybe this good things to come.
  13. Hello, I didn't have a revision but I choose Bypass due to already having severe GERD. My surgeon explained that it was very likely my GERD would remain the same if not worsen and that bypass would likely reduce or completely cure it. Almost 4 months out it seems to have CURED IT! I have had no signs of anything acid reflux/GERD related. I was on 2 prescriptions plus eating tums daily. I am off of ALL GERD medications and have not eaten a single tums since surgery. I am so pleased about that because it was miserable! As far as weight loss, I have lost 73 lbs since surgery in a little over 2.5 months. I am 6ft tall. Stats are on the side panel too if people set them up. Good luck- I hope your acid issues are resolved!

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Well.. Friday is a go. 6am for pre-op, surgery at 8am. And she forgot anesthesia cost. !@#@#$^&$%@#! She said she begged them to let me not have to pay it up front, because they couldn't do same day yadda yadda, I'd have to make 2 trips down. So they are going to go ahead and bill me afterward for anesthesia time used. For the band, it was $500, but she said since this is going to be less time it will be cheaper. Whatever. So now we're up to $2,596 at most. I'm going to insist on free fills for at least 2 years! Called the hotel we stayed at last week to reserve a room, I asked the rate and she said "you have government rate on your account' and she never gave me an actual number. Last time I stayed, the doctor called in the room and paid for it. So I dunno what that means, it was $60 last time. Hopefully it's not anymore. We're going up Thursday night, getting the room, surgery Fri. Morning.. I said "And I will be able to go home the same day, right?" she said 'barring any complications'. Really, I don't know how I would have complications.. if I did fine in the normal surgery, revising the port surgery should be a piece of cake, right? Tell me right!!

Hello all. Just wanted to give an update on my progress. I did not have the RNY done. Still scared to death of it. But, I am in the process of getting the Duodenal Switch approved. Had an EGD last week which showed a slip and a hernia. Still don't have a fill and have maintained my pre surgery weight. Three years and still hover around the same 10 lb mark. If the DS is not approved, I will be forced to either take out the band and have nothing, or revise to RNY. Please keep your fingers crossed for me to be approved for the DS. If you are having issues and are looking into a revision, please read the studies on DS vs. RNY. The website dsfacts.com has some wonderful information. I like the DS because you don't have regain 2 years out. You still have to take your Vitamins like the RNY'ers, but with greater freedom of food choices and a better long term success rate. Will let you know how I do WHEN I get it. Hope, Hope!
  16. I had gastric plication with Dr. Ortiz about a year ago. I felt very comfortable with the facility, staff, etc. But, afterwards I was still hungry--like all the time. My general doctor suggested I get a test (can't remember the name, but you swallow barium and they can see the stomach) to make sure my stomach hadn't opened. What it showed was that the stomach wasn't in the shape of a banana, but the top part was completely open and the stitches started from the middle down. That's why I was still feeling hunger. I send the CD of the images to Dr. Ortiz per his staff's instructions and heard absolutely nothing back. Nothing. Apparently they are great but you better hope there are no complications because you won't get any support. I ended up having a plication revision with Dr. Waldrep in Thousand Oaks, CA. He folded the top part that Dr. Ortiz left open and added another fold. And, there was constant support, including a call from Dr. Waldrep every couple of days to check on my progress. Even though revision surgery is usually more complicated, the cost was almost on par with Mexico, so I really wish I had just had the procedure with Dr. Waldrep to begin with.
  17. USC doesn't do banding, but they DO charge $800 for their program fee for support for RnY/DS surgeries. My surgeon charges $2000 ($3000 for revision patients) for his "weight loss program fee." Interesting enough, those fees are now tax deductible...as long as you have (well...in my case...a Letter of Medical Necessity stating that the program is for the treatment of a disease such as obesity or hypertension. which should be here soon so I can "ransom" my three grand out of my Section 125 account.) However, when we go into the area of pre-paid follow-up we get iffy, because pre-paid medical is NOT deductible...but, the support groups, dietary advice, education, etc. are all okay.
  18. My two cents on the Shirley issue, she was a band to sleeve revision and had her sleeve done by Dr Pompa long before she was the main US coordinator for Betancourt/Dr.Almanza. Also she was definitely NOT fired. She QUIT! This is NOT hearsay from my part for sure! Thanks Stoongal for the FACTS!!!

Not to be dense, but by revision for $4000, you mean revising to gastric bypass? From all your posts, I really get the feeling it isn't a good choice for you. You sound really against it. How much will it cost for them to reposition the band, or is that an option? There are some people on here (KarenB for one) who converted to RNY. Maybe you should PM them. Do you have a 4cc band or a 10cc? Maybe a different band would work better for your anatomy. Did your doctor discuss that at all? Have you had any other tests to rule out a medical reason for you having trouble losing weight? Like thyroid, etc.? Sorry if I ask alot of questions. I've just been thinking about you alot and trying my best to put myself in your shoes. Are you still exercising and watching what you eat? I think you need to go get a 90 minute massage like Barb! Then you'll be more relaxed and be better able to make a clear-headed decision. I'm pulling for your success!!
  20. I would also love to have a copy of the book. I am getting ready to have a revision from the band to the sleeve! Thanks! Calanne mayamom@hotmail.com Thanks so much!

What did you have and how much was it? Revision 1/31/13 by Dr Cabrera and Venezuela in MX

How is your Port area post surgery?.

I will be 1 year post revision in early May, and still have a port. I just had my plastics consult and the surgeon asked me if my port was left in place. I told him no, but the bariatric surgeon explained that they had to "dig" it out of the scar tissue that had enveloped it. He is going to try to remove all the knot when/if I get my tummy tuck/thigh lift. I guess we will see what happens.
  23. I went to my Surgeon because he had thousands of lapband surgeries performed successfully. He also does sleeve and by pass. I did not want my intestines re-routed and a large portion of my stomach removed or stapled. the sleeve seems to be the flavor of the week, everyone is rushing to get it. I think over time there will be as many issues with the sleeve as people claim there are with the band. no surgery is 100% guaranteed. I chose the band because I wanted an option of removal or revision if needed. the follow up care has been good for me. I haven't had a fill in 6 months or more, haven't had any issues with my band. I have lost what I wanted and slowly , never lost my hair, never had dumping syndrome or malnutrition. I only take 3 Vitamins a day, B12,D3 and a Multivitamin. I am no longer on diabetic meds, high cholesterol or high blood pressure. I pray that I never have to have my band removed but I will most likely have it replaced if needed. All in all we all have to make the best decision we can for our own health.
  24. I don't have dumping syndrome. I had one episode of reactive hypoglycemia, which is considered late dumping, and I had that before revising to bypass. I've also thrown up once but I didn't have the sweats or shaking, so I think it was more related to eating too much. I think the current way they do the surgery actually minimizes dumping, so don't count on it. But the good news is that it still makes it difficult to eat too much of the bad stuff and doesn't allow full absorption. So you still need to make good choices, but it's very possible to still enjoy bits of indulgences.
  25. I wish that I had a crystal ball six years ago when I made the decision to have the LapBand placed. I wish that I had known that I would spend thousands of dollars on fills and unfills because of the narrow range I could tolerate. I wish I had known that I would spend years chasing the elusive "green zone" that could change at the drop of a hat. I wish I had known that TOM, salt, even air pressure changes could impact how tight the band felt. I wish that I had known that my esophagus could eventually become "tired" from the effort it took to get food through the band. There are many more I could add, but I won't. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to revision to VSG in less than two weeks. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
