  1. Hello out there.. This is my first post as I am now waiting for my LapBand which is sked for the 13th of October. I am a disabled vet after having lost a battle with gravity in my helicopter and compressing 7 vertebrae in my lower back. My orthopedist kept telling me to get this surgery and I finally came to grips with the thought that I won't ever be able to break the holy trinity of Pain, Excercise and Weight Loss. If it weren't for one thing, another may rear its head, or another or...I am sure many of you are in the same sitch. My wife was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Oct 04 and had a pretty rough go post operative with the initial removal and Tram Flap repair done that turned into a MRSA infection in the mesh and .....4 surgeries-4 years and 120 pounds later (thanks to Tamoxifen, Sleep Apnea, Hyper, etc.. comorbidity hell) she will be getting a bypass, perhaps sleeve depending on what they find... She is scheduled for Sept 29, and although they told me that they can schedule me first, I want to be sure that she goes first in case something bad happens to me and I would preclude her from her little hospital stay and recovery time. My band is scheduled for the 13th, and being a tad superstitious if it would have been a Friday I would have had to let it slip another few days or so... Sorry for deviating from the intro- If anybody has a pain pump installed any advice if required would be appreciated, same with those taking Warfarin. So, can anyone tell me what the diff is between the Realize and LapBand are, 'cept for the electronic links? I know the band is different itself but is there any proven studies documenting one being substantially better than the other? Don't know if this is the place to ask ?'s re the pre-surgical Atkins Diet- Back to intro- started the paperwork in early May, met with the Nutrition folks in mid-May, received my authority on August 1st and will get my final Eval in a week or so... Dr. Landerholm (Edmonds, WA)will be doing the procedure up here North of Seattle. I will learn where to appropriately ask questions about the LapBand and a pain-pump and living with Warfarin.....Any directions on where to go for these issues would be greatly appreciated- Hope to learn from you all- Thanx in Advance! Matt
  2. The dr told us at orientation that 30% of patients fail in the first year, and the statistics go up after that. He said its very hard for people to keep it off up to 5 yrs, and that is WITH the band. He said that its a lifestyle change either way we go. And the only surgery that is the most guaranteed is bypass, but that he doesnt recommend it because of the risks.. It is just so confusing, i am not stoping my lap band journey, because the apts are still scheduled im just going to see what i can do i guess.. You can stretch your belly back out, and they say a huge percent have to ahve the band removed after 7yrs.....

    Just had my band removed...

I was a little gun shy of another WLS as well. I revised to a sleeve. But... Maybe restriction alone isn't your thing? If you lost 40# in under two years with a band maybe a malabsorptive procedure is a better bet for you? We really do not do well losing/maintaining without a tool. Stats show about 3-5% of obese people can lose weight on their own or maintain after losing their WLS tool. You can try to maintain or even lose but don't be too hard on yourself if you can't do it. You might want to start researching other options? You don't have to do any of them but use this time to consider what else is out there.
  4. I have switch surgeons post approval. I was originally going to have my lap band done in Baltimore but my Dr. tried to convince me to have the bypass done. As a result I was going to switch to the sleeve but my BMI wasn't high enough to have it covered by insurance. While doing research about the sleeve I found out about sleeve plication in addition to the band. Unfortunately there are only a few doctors in the country that do it so I ended up switching to a doctor in Hollywood, FL. At the point the point that I switched, I had pretty much all of the pre-op tests and requirements done and had scheduled my surgery, The process of changing was very easy, I had the original office send all of test results and documentation to the new office prior to my first consultation. The only thing that I had to do over was meeting with the new office's nutritionist. I was also lucky that I was able to do the consult via Skype. I also had to do a sleep study as part of my Pre-Op and I'll second the importance of having the sleep study done because I although I felt that I didn't have any sleep issues, I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. It is minor enough that I don't really need any treatment and just need to try to sleep on my stomach to prevent episodes but I think that knowing that I am prone to episodes on my back is important information for the anesthesiologist during my surgery. When I scheduled my sleep study I was also told that it would take several weeks to get my results back and they even scheduled my follow-up when I made the original appointment but I was also told that it usually doesn't take that long and that they may move up the follow-up appointment which they ended up doing. I think there might have been no more than two weeks in between appointments.
  5. I've had both a sleeve and now a bypass. I am struggling with not overeating because there is no full feeling with my RNY. With my sleeve it was very clear when I should stop eating, but not with RNY. I am back to measuring portions.

    60 years old

I am 65. I got a lap band at 55 but it recently slipped and caused me to develop a hiatal hernia. So I got it removed, the hernia fixed and a revision to a gastric bypass all in one surgery. Recovery was a bit harder than the lap band but I don't think it was that I'm 10 years older as much was how much more involved a bypass is than a lap band. You are never too told to try to improve your health, and the benefits far outweigh the risks, so go for it! And we are all here to help you get through it.

Met with surgeon, I just don't know...

Hi Mark, welcome. I noticed that you’re willing to treat other side effects of your weight with medications & tools - CPAP machine, meds for the high blood pressure, and knee surgery for the worn out knees… But you hesitate with GERD and constipation, both of which can be corrected with medications alone (over the counter options as well as prescription). Having the surgery could even correct your high blood pressure and sleep apnea, which would remove those issues from the list. Not to mention, weight loss in the long term is desirable for knee replacement. This leads me to ask, what are you actually scared of? Weight loss surgery is an extremely effective procedure for long term results, and the RNY gastric bypass is highly effective in treating or preventing GERD. I’m so glad you’re here, because there is a lot to learn and reconcile with when it comes to weight in our society. At the end of the day, getting to a healthy weight and keeping it off is what everyone here is working toward. You will never be alone in this if you choose to move ahead. Best of luck to you!

Met with surgeon, I just don't know...

Hi and welcome. I know it is scary to read the negative, but there are so many positives! I have knee issues, a torn meniscus to be exact. I have lost almost 100 pounds since I started this journey and now rarely have pain in my knee, to the point that I do not need the surgery. My numbers on my blood work are great, I have energy and over all just feel better. Are there times its a pain to eat a certain way, yes. Could I need a revision for an issue later, yes. Do I have to take fiber religiously, yes... But then I remember all the positives I mentioned above and its not an issue anymore. If you think there's no other choice, and this is needed, do it. It's been life changing in all the best ways possible. I would do it again in a heart beat.

    Gaining a bit and worried

Gastric bypass causes your body to not absorb all of the calories in the food that is eaten. Your colon has like finger-like appendages called villi that grab food and hold it against the wall of the intestine until it can be absorbed. When a portion of the intestines is bypassed, then calories do not get absorbed. It takes the body about two years to grow enough new villi so that all of the calories in food can be absorbed again. Then an average of 20 pounds is gained during the third year after surgery. To stop the weight loss you have to eat less calories. The honeymoon is over and there is no more free ride. There is no pouch reset. Everything you eat will get absorbed now. Two years is where counting calories and following a diet is the only way to stop regain. Many people regain half of the lost weight by year five. Some regain all of it. Start fighting it now, it will not stop on its own.

    Is Dumping Syndrome Common

3mo post bypass, I had dumping about 10 times when introducing new foods, since then, I'm able to eat everything without issues. Sweets don't bother me, though i also don't crave them as i used to. If i eat fatty and fast, i do have dumping, no pain or gas, just extremely uncomfortable and wanting to crawl into a ball and die for about 15min. I have only positive things to say about the bypass, and agree that negative postings tend to blow the issues pout of proportion in the grand scheme of things. Good luck!

Be very excited! I wish I had been more excited and less nervous! My surgery was Wednesday 6/8 and I already feel 25 years younger and just fabulous. I had a massive hiatal hernia repaired, gastric bypass, and gall bladder removal. This surgery was the best decision I ever made. shopping: you may be bloated from IV Fluid when you go home. I bought a pair of shoes 1/2 size larger and it’s a good thing that I did. TEGADERM PATCHES: I was able to shower 2 days post op, but you don’t want the Water beating down on the laparoscopic sites. sugar free ICE POPS: I bought about 6 boxes of these because a couple of weeks ago, they were scarce. If I wake in the middle of the night, I’ll have an ice pop. BROTH: low sodium. SMALL HAND HELD STRAINER: so you can strain cream of whatever Soup. YOUR favorite Protein Shake. Mine is premier Peanut Butter chocolate. CRYSTAL LIGHT: pick your favorite flavors. I go through this like crazy. FAIRLIFE SKIM or 1% MILK: my nutritionist told me to buy it to thin shakes, put in soup. She was right. I bought Nespresso pods and K Cups in Decaf because I do miss the taste of coffee. STOOL SOFTENER: I bought Miralax. BLOOD PRESSURE MONITOR: my surgeon wants me to monitor my bp and get in touch with my PCP when it starts to come down. I wore hospital gowns in the hospital but had some nice lounge wear for when I got home. BANDAIDS: I’m on an oral bloodthinner for a month. The tiniest scratch will bleed like you can’t believe. SUGAR FREE JELLO:  so many packs of that. B COMPLEX VITAMINS: tiny capsules…easy to swallow. I’ll let you know if I think of anything else.

    Montreal operations?????

Hi! I had my band installed by Dr. Christou at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. I did it privately and it cost $17,500 and I could've had the surgery within 3 weeks! the surgery went super well, and so have the post-op visits even though I live in Gatineau QC, near Ottawa, and have to drive 2 hours to get a fill. The surgery was done at a private hospital in Montreal where they do plastic surgery and sex-change operations (gasp!) The clinic where the did the surgery was great...I received excellent care, and stayed 1 night. What I also liked was that his nutritionist came to visit me after the surgery to review my nutritional needs. What I liked the most about Dr. Christou is that he does both the gastric bypass and the Lapband, so I could really choose what was right for me, instead of what he offered. I think he is one of the surgeons in Montreal that has been doing the procedure for the longest, and in fact other surgeons get trained by him. I also like that he is perfectly bilingual. The only downside is that the Royal victoria hospital, where I get my fills, is super old and frankly, looks like one of the dirtiest hospitals that I have ever seen!
  17. My revision. Was done in one procedure on 8/31/17. My surgeon predicted 45 min for everything and I woke up in my room and family told me took 2. 5 hrs. Had so much scar from band collar and esophagus was torn. And I had a very experienced surgeon and he told surgeon who put in my band placed the collar too high on esophagus. Not to scare you but it really depends on what they find when they get inside. My doc didn't anticipate any complications because I was healthy and other than band being too tight, had no other complaints!
  18. @TeeBeau exactly what my surgeon said, if I can start my diet and exercise leading up to the surgery it's like giving the bypass a head start

Random drug tests? Dang, that's harsh. What are they gonna do if you test positive after the surgery? Go back in and reconnect your bypass??
  20. I need a little help from others that have been approved with CIGNA. THIS Is the most up to date policy (see below). They actually update their policy on the 15th of July so it was revised and updated today. No changes were really made. Anyways, I do meet the requirements but my question is regarding Cigna coverage. Most plans require a monitored 3, 6 or 12 month diet/nutrition/weight loss management through PCP or somewhere similar. Cigna's policy says NOTHING about this, only that "a statement from a physician other than the surgeon, that the individual has failed previous attempts to achieve and maintain weight loss by medical management" - it gives no other requirements or indicators. I called Cigna and two different reps confirmed that it is not required. Although when I went to my Drs appointment they told me they thought it was six months worth of supervised diet! I think they are confused bc of the “within the last six months” part. SIGH! They said they will look into it more So, for those of you that have been approved in the past few months, do I have to have a letter from my primary that recommends bariatric surgery? Would this be the same letter or separate from the on where they state I have made several attempts and failed? And what did you submit/have your PCP write to say that you had failed previous attempts? Thanks in advance for your help! Sorry I just know Insurance’s are so picky! below is link to coverage https://static.cigna.com/assets/chcp/pdf/coveragePolicies/medical/mm_0051_coveragepositioncriteria_bariatric_surgery.pdf

    CIGNA requirements HELP

I have Cigna through my employer and it all depends on how the policy is written regarding Bariatric surgery. My policy shows one thing when you look it up online but when anything is submitted it gives not covered by policy. Putting my medical billing & coding to work i did little digging and found that it actually was in the underwriting of the policy that it excludes weight loss surgery. Yes i have been under my PCP care for health issues related to my weight along with weight management (meds/diet/etc) my surgery is also a medical necessity as i have OSA, NAFLD, & PCOS. Even after both my PCP & OBGYN gave the "medical necessity" insurance still will not cover any form of bypass surgery and has left me to figure it out on my own. After lots of medical practice locations/surgeon research, i decided to proceed with having a Vertical Sleeve which will be done by one of the surgeons at Blossom Bariatrics (fast track program). They will utilize my insurance for all the Pretesting labs, stress test, upper Endoscopy but i have to cover the surgery procedure part out of pocket. Between my husband and i we were able to obtain a medical loan to assist in the remaining amount we needed and my surgery date was scheduled for week of Sept 7th so my countdown is on!!!!!
  22. I waited 6 months and had no problem- though in excess the hang overs are much worse than before. I guess the revised digestive system cannot process it as well or something
  23. I have a band and would like a sleeve revision. Problem is I can't find a revision surgeon willing to see me since they didn't place my band initially. That doesn't make sense to me:( I have excellent health insurance though. Do any if you know a good Houston area revision surgeon?? Thanks!
  24. I am 17 months post surgery and am just now eating 1000-1200 calories a day (I know some vets have different experiences and ate more calories more quickly than I). I can't imagine being able to get 1200 calories a day in 2 months post surgery. Also my nutrient macros are much different than yours. I aim for 100 + grams of protein a day and I drink 90-100 oz of liquid a day. I've lost 130ish lbs on my plan (not that my plan is anything special or the only one that works). I would make a few suggestions: (1) check with your surgeon or NUT about the 1200 calories which seem more like a maintenance level and less like a weight loss level; (2) ditch the half cup mashed potatoes (and similar carb heavy foods that lack nutritional value) and substitute for a soft veggie if you still have room after eating your protein; (3) try reducing your calories to 1000 and see if it kick starts your weight loss. Since I was not a revision patient I don't know how that affects loss or calorie consumption so my advice may not apply to you at all. Good luck!

    Time off work

Hey! I had surgery last Thursday (so it’ll be a week in a few hours, lol). I had gastric bypass and I’m going back tomorrow. I feel great. Of course, I pushed hard to walk every hour as soon as I woke up and have been up and about every day.
