  1. I had issues with chicken too when I first started pureed foods 3 weeks ago. I found that pureeing it with greek yogurt or cottage cheese and a little bit of milk fixed the problem. and that also gives you a little bit of variation, while at the same time increasing the protein. My meal plan calls for 4 oz per meal, three meals a day, protein first, and I don't have too much trouble getting it down usually. Hope this helps.

I have a completely knee replacement with limited bend so I completely understand! It definitely limits what I can and cannot do. I am 15 weeks out so I am working on adding fruits and veggies into my diet. I am getting better. I still have some premixed shakes but only use them seldomly. The things I don't eat at all.... Breads (occasional whole grain slice of toast); rice, Pasta, processed foods, sweets, sodas, fried foods, caffeine. I generally start with a scrambled eggs with turkey sausage crumbles and a Greek yogurt with my supplements. dinner will be a Protein with 1 cup of mixed greens and 1/3 cup of berries. I add a lite dressing. Supper again is a protein with a vegetable. I will have a morning snack of nuts/cheese or fruit and 1/2 a Protein Shake. And afternoon snack is usually a yogurt. I also am addicted to SF Popsicles. I get between 750-850 calories a day and my nutrient count is usually protein-60-80gr; carbs 50-60; fats 28-less.
  3. I am a little less than two weeks post surgery. Three days ago I was able to start the pureed stage, hip hip hooray! So I ate some scrambled egg. Check, no problem. Tuna salad. Check. Pureed squash. Check. Pureed chicken. Threw it right up. The chicken happened yesterday at supper. Couldn't eat anything more all night. So this morning, I decided to try a Protein shake. Threw it right up. Called the bariatric nurse at my Surgeon's office. She told me I need to go back on clear fluids to "reset" my pouch, then tomorrow full liquids, and then the next day I can go back to pureed, with no chicken for a while. Sigh. And it still surprises me how little I am able to eat. I can literally only eat about 2 tablespoons of food before I am full, if even that much. Three ounces of yogurt and I am done. How in the world am I supposed to be able to get in my 60-80 grams of protein a day if I can hardly eat anything? All I can do is have my Protein Shake and have that boost my protein.
  4. Thanks for your posts. I'd really like to hear from folks that are 2-3 years out of surgery. There are different challenges then. The Hunger and cravings come back, you've tried the same recipes and tired of learning new ones. The excitement of fitting in clothes or in an airplane seat is now something you take for granted. Your support system is less and there's a social and cultural expectation for you to go back to eat "normal" again. You've become active and have switched to a number exercise routines. And the reality hits that it is low fat cottage cheese and Greek yogurt as your primary diet for the rest of your life. In short, the thrill is gone and the hard work is really up to you

    What to stock up on.....

Find a Protein drink you can stand with just some Water. If you can get a sample great, seems so many come in huge cans so you are stuck. I do have some on hand, too bad I really don't like it :-) I did get some pre-made Protein drinks I like much better. have 3 flavors of cream of wheat (plain, maple & cinnamon). I have a few boxes of different good veggie soups (small boxes in the fridge), vanilla yogurt & ricotta cheese. I have plenty of Turkey Hill diet, caffeine free iced tea and crystal light mix. I have plenty of little water bottles. I have my Vitamins & other meds. I also have gauze, wide paper tape & drain pads (polyester) Other than that - not much! I had my surgery on Sept 10th, doing well so far. I put the Ricotta or Yogurt in the soup as needed for flavor... Just make sure to sip, sip, sip!
  6. so the idea is the protein that's it ! i don;t get the 60 per day i now can't handle shakes or even yogurt with high protein i also don't eat Breakfast i only eat once a day i don't want to eat more i even can't handle more than once i so pissed of since the surgery which was on the 27th of july i lost 37 pounds i am so mad of myself don't know what to do
  7. I'm 2 years out and initially lost over 110 lbs. I more than passed the expectation of my surgery team. Over the past six months I have gained back more than 15 lbs. My surgeon is okay with my weight gain because I'm still within my expected range, but I am not. He also said that they do expect some weight gain about 2 years out as your body adjusts to its new size. What I also learned from my team is that you need far less calories post surgery than a normal person. Because you have essentially flushed your system out, your heart, lungs, muscles need much less energy just to work normally. They compareded it to a car needing less fuel after a tune up. So translate fuel or energy to calories. Much less calories are now needed and that as time goes on and my body continues to adjust, I may continue to drop in the amount of calories I can tolerate. So it appears that I need to limit my daily caloric intake to approx. 1500 calories to simply not gain. Even though I'm active, running, walk, kayak, ski etc on a regular basis. Doesn't seem to matter. In fact it was suggested that I might not be able to tolerate 1500, that as time goes on I may need to reduce my caloric intake even more. I still find I need 5 smaller meals a day. Do the math, that means 250-300 calories a meal. I know I've been eating more than that. So I struggling with accepting that if I want to keep the weight off, I need to live on a highly restricted calorie diet, which basically severely limits my intake of sugar, alcohol, carbohydrates, meat and fats. I lost the weight on low fat cottage cheese, greek yogurt, salads with vinegar or yogurt dressing, fish, Beans and low-fat cheese as my primary nurishment. I am realizing that I need to follow that diet for life and it is challenging, particularly when it comes to social events and dining out. I am praying for fortitude and solice to accept this as a permanent lifestyle change and would greatly appreciate hearing your stories and knowing that I am not alone.

    Pre op liquid diet

I am supposed to have 4 shakes or clear Protein drinks per day - I am using zero carb Isopure in almond milk for my shakes and I have a few of the clear Isopure drinks but they are super sweet! I have ordered a large container of Syntrax nectar chocolate truffle after trying some individual packets of it. I can also substitute Soups from my doctor's office (Healthwise) for the shakes. I have had the cream of chicken and cream of tomato, both not bad and a nice change from cold stuff all the time. In addition I am supposed to get in 6 servings of the following - 1/2 cup plain oatmeal or cream of wheat, 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1 small container of low cal yogurt, small can of V-8, sugar free Jello or pudding. I also picked up a container of unflavored unjury to put in regular chicken or beef broth. I'm supposed to get 115 gm protein/day and stay under 1000 calories. So far I've not gone over 800. The Isopure protein is 50 gms per serving (2 scoops) so it's easy to get enough protein. I'm on day 3, and have 28 more to go before surgery!

    Slow Cooker Recipes

As someone who rarely cooks is it weird that I am ridiculously proud of myself for digging out my slow cooker this week? I have been thinking about investing in a 3 in 1 cooker, but since I rarely use my old-fashioned slow cooker I though I had better give it a whirl. I raised my pantry and used a can of black beans, two cans of Rotel tomatoes, one brick of Greek yogurt cream cheese, a few shakes of Mexican seasoning, and two frozen chicken thighs. I made it on Monday and will probably still be eating it this Friday. I still have chicken thighs. What EASY recipe should I try next?
  10. I eat a lot of nuts. But as you can't and don't care for tuna, here's what else I eat a lot of: cheeses meats (with the fat and/or skin) deli meats Greek yogurt eggs Can you eat seafood?
  11. I eat a lot of green beans. I get those little single serve green bean packages and add one to my protein. I drink V8 on occasion. I slice up fresh tomato or cucumber and eat with cottage cheese. Add a tablespoon or two of a soft vegetable (like squash) to some of your meals. I love fresh fruit. You can add some fresh blueberries to your yogurt. I like a fresh sliced peach or a fresh plum as a "desert".
  12. @@gigis - It definitely is overwhelming! I mix half of a container of low sugar yogurt with 1/2 scoop of vanilla Protein powder on most days which gets me 21g protein and that helps. I am hoping once I can actually eat more dense protein (meats) that it will become much easier to get it all in and not have to do shakes. I asked my nutritionist last week and she said drinking 2 shakes a day at my stage (3 1/2 months) was ok. (I had a set back with a stricture though so I am running a little behind schedule though.) My schedule is even a little more complicated because I have to take Synthroid in the morning and then wait an hour to take anything in PLUS I cannot have calcium (or most other vitamins) within 4 hours of Synthroid, so I feel your pain! I also have kidney stone problem (pre-op) so my endocrinologist took me off my calcium supplements as long as I was eating 2 servings of cheese or milk and 1 Premier Protein shake per day. SO MUCH TO REMEMBER!!

    Newbie looking for a buddy

I am post op day six today of my gastric bypass. Is it normal to crave what my family is eating this early? When reading about other post ops they all say that they don't want food. I'm drinking carnation instant breakfast and Special K shakes for my protein. I also eat yogurt and take my vitamins but sometimes I get so hungry in the evenings. This is somewhat harder than I thought. I'm so scared of messing up.
  14. I was worried about constipation, eating essentially no Fiber, but was surprised this morning (day 3) to have an acute onset of diarrhea (sorry TMI). I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere else in the boards - any other experiences like this? My liquid diet consists of 4 Protein shakes/day, plus 6 small servings of either unsweet applesauce, V-8, cream of wheat, low cal yogurt or sugar-free pudding. It's supposed to be about 1000 cal/day but I've only been getting about 800. I have 2 Soups purchased from my surgeon's office to use in place of Protein shake and had one each day so far. Only 28 more days to go.....
  15. Toss some veg in with the egg (spinach ad/or broccoli are my favs.) Add a bit of fruit with the yogurt Make your own chicken salad. Use half plain greek yogurt/half mayo to cut fat & up protein. Serve in a lettuce wrap or over spinach Instead of a quest bar, have some fruit. Half an orange or half an apple with nut butter. Have a meatless Monday and eat all plant based Proteins.
  16. Try adding some broccoli or spinach (or other veggies) in with your egg. I'm 5 weeks post and my NUT told me Monday to cut out Protein shakes and less yogurt, to eat more of what she called "real food." So I've substituted those with 1.5 oz meat (like tuna) with about 1/2 cup salad greens, She suggested to eat 2oz meat and add 1 oz veggies. You can also add crushed pineapple to ricotta or cottage cheese or use veggies to dip in ricotta (sounds gross, but is actually yummy to me). Add fruit to yogurt. She also told me to cut out Protein Bars. If you do Protein Shakes, add fruit to them. I get bored with the same foods all the time, so I am constantly changing things up. Hope you find a way to make it work. Honestly, in the long run, I struggle too to get anything but protein in, but I keep trying also.
  17. I am almost three months out, and I am having trouble eating any fruits or veggies. My NUT has recommended that I work on veggies, but I don't know how to do this and still get in my Protein. I feel like I eat all the time and barely make my protein goals. I am hitting the protein goals, but am worried that adding in veggies will mean I won't get my protein goal. My typical day looks like this: Breakfast 6:30: one egg with cheese (10g protein) 10:00 greek yogurt (15g) lunch: costco chicken salad (14 g) snack: greek yogurt (15g) dinner: 2/3 oz chicken or something family is eating (10 g) sometimes: 1/2 Quest bar as dessert (10g) Or sometimes I do eat a small handful of prunes. So, I am doing well on protein and also getting fluids in. But I really feel like there is little room for vegetables. I know I need vegetables and Fiber. How do you get your veggies in and still get in your protein requirements?

    2 days to go.

I have my first post op visit with my surgeon and NUT. Should get to move from clears to protein drinks and yogurt. I hear you on the yogurt!
  19. I'm just over 6 weeks out, and I'm kind of worried about how much I can eat. I see people on here who are 3+ months out who can only eat 500-600 calories. I am eating around 700-900 calories a day, but I could easily eat 1200 - 1300 calories if I wanted! I'm talking 1200 of high quality, protein-rich foods, not junk or sliders. I'm not overly hungry, but I also never feel that super restricted feeling people talk about. I read about people who can't eat more than 2 oz or never want to eat anything, and I wish that was me! I can take full gulps of liquid -- not HUGE gulps, but a lot more than sips. I can eat 5.3 oz container of yogurt, or a veggie hot dog, or 3-4 oz of tuna in 10-15 minutes without feeling at all sick or restricted. I eat as slowly as I can, but the few times I've forgotten and have eaten too fast I've had no ill effects. I have not found a single food that disagrees with my sleeve so far, and I've never thrown up. (Not eating any bread, Pasta, rice, though, so I can't say how those would feel.) The only food that causes a super restricted feeling is salmon. I never drink with meals, never eat bread, starches, etc. I'm following the guidelines. I'm losing slowly but surely. But I am so worried that if I don't have much restriction now, I will go back to my old, bad eating habits in a few months, after the restriction gets even less! Does anyone else have this situation? Does anyone have any advice?

    Recipes needed:)

There is a recipes section on this site. Not sure if you have had a chance to look at it or not. Also there is a site called "the world according to eggface", it has a lot of bariatric recipes. I would definately suggest making a good homemade chicken stock for your liquid phase. Use carrots, celery, onions, chicken, Water, salt, pepper, garlic if you like it. For most this becomes a lifesaver during both preop and post op liquid phases. Trust me, you will be sick of Protein shakes and needing something warm and comforting to sip on. It helps with hunger too during preop. I made homemade chicken cacciatore using boneless chicken breasts, mushrooms, onion, green pepper, garlic and your favorite marinara sauce. I then vacuume sealed it in 2/3 oz. portions and froze them. When I wanted to eat, I simply dropped one in boiling water to heat through. I bought a vacuum sealed after another bariatric pal suggested it. It is one of the best tools in my kitchen given my need for tiny little portions, especially the first 6 months. I would bring home leftovers from the restaurant and get 2/3 more meals or more out of 1. I made a lot of different chicken, ground beef, ground chicken/turkey dishes. In the beginning casseroles are not recommended. Stick with Proteins with Fat free gravies or sauces to help them slide down easily. I would go to the eggface site to get some good purée ideas. I personally did not do well in that phase and lived on yogurt, Protein Shakes and cottage cheese. Good luck to you!
  23. I was also sleeved on 8/11. It seems like we are on the same track. I'm eating about 800 calories a day and I've only lost 22lbs since surgery. I've lost inches though. I eat lots of dairy.. Greek yogurt. Cottage cheese and Babybel cheese. Ground beef is a little tough but ground turkey and chicken work well. I also have a hard time getting 64 oz of Water in as I just get busy at work and don't sip so often. I do feel better though! I know the best is yet to come.
  24. Different protein amounts by brand of yogurt. Just gave up on almost all processed food, now I just have go to protein and simple raw veggies My sleeve rebels against raised dough
  25. Hi everyone! Four weeks post op today. Have been at a stall for about a week and a half. Getting a little frustrated. I don't want to sound like I am complaining because I am not at all, but I have had NO problems getting liquids, protein or meals in. So much so that I am actually paranoid about wondering if they actually took enough of my stomach. I have been on soft foods for a week and have only gotten to the point where I felt full once and I think it was because I didn't chew well enough. Otherwise, I have had no problems and even got down a Chobani yogurt down (5.3 ounces) without even feeling full. I feel like I'm not doing something properly. I definitely don't have any hunger though so they must have done something in there, LOL. Any tips on how to break this stall? I've increased activity, fluids and protein. I'm still only getting about 600 calories in a day and the doctor wants me at 1000 but I haven't made it happen yet, but try every day.
