Healthy side dishes -Kid friendly?
Jo Skinnie replied to newhope4me's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I put shredded cheese or parm on most veggies so my girls will eat them. They are 6 and 3. They love cheese so they eat up the veggies. I also let them dip their veggies in low fat ranch or french dressing. What every gets them to eat veggies works for me! I'm lucky tho because my girls love brocolli, carrots and peas. That really helps even if they only taste a new veggie I know I have a couple other things they will eat. DH and I also add lots of veggies to hotdish when we make that. -
One great idea I got from another post many weeks ago was 1/2c canned pumpkin (not pie filling but pure pumpkin) 1c almond milk, 1 scoop vanilla Protein powder, a dash of pumpkin pie spice , 1 tsp sugar free caramel davinci syrup. I blend all together the night before and it "sets" in the fridge and can eat with a spoon. Delish!! Nutritional value - 28 grams protein, 3 grams fat, 13 grams carbs - 210 calories. Keeps me satisfied for easily 5 hours. Another thing I'll try is 1/2c yogurt or fat free cottage with 1 scoop unflavored soy protein mixed in. Also very satisfying. 20gms protein in soy powder and additional protein in cottage cheese but not so much in yogurt. I have a hard time finding the greek hi protein yogurt that everyone seems to love. You could even mix in a 1/8th or 1/4 cup of Kashi Go Lean Cereal for a bit more protein but additional carbs. These are usually quick and convenient for leaving the house by 6:30 am, and are options for something other than just having a shake everyday. I like to mix things up. Good luck!!

So this is what it's supposed to feel like!
LapBandit replied to LapBandit's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well, false alarm. I had restriction for a week but now it's gone again. I guess I'll continue the search for the mystical "sweet spot"! Darn! -
Right now I'm on the powdered Vitamins (mix with water) from my general doc, she sells them. But they're pricey. A lot of people in my lap band support group use the Centrum liquid so I'm going to switch to that when I'm through with my current bottle. CVS carries it and they have a lot of sales on Centrum. I'm also taking a calcium supplement. I'm moving to the Caltrate tablets that are called "petites". They are smaller than my birth control pill so it shouldn't be a problem. I learned I have a B-12 deficiency when I started the lap band process early on this year. I was at 120 and my general doc said I should be between 400 and 900. Even after 3 months of the shots I barely went over 200. So I'm on a B-12 liquid supplement also. I haven't tried any of the chewables. I used to take Viactiv. But ever since I was banded I've been worried about them getting stuck.

I have really messed up with the amount and what I eat ....

You will be fine , don't beat yourself up.. Stay off scale , I go to doctor for that, it's like Christmas every week.. -
I was in a gown until they knocked me out. I never thought about being nude, I guess I was, but it doesn't count if I can't remember it! Yes I had the runs for two weeks post op (which is very unusual for me), but some people find the opposite and others no change to their regular routine. Everyone is different.

Hi Mum2 I work at a medical centre and all the doctors have highly recommended Mr Nottle I also have two work friends who have had it done through him and they speak highly of him It does take a long time on the public waiting list so i didnt even consider waiting 3+ years I went straight to iselect and found that AHM was the best insurance for me I will still have to wait the one year but at least i know that once i see Peter Nottle then it should be guaranteed once my insurance passes the yearly mark

Hi there Marion! Well, we kiwis also term ourselves downunderers, after all we are even more downunderer than our Aussie neighbours! LOL..Next stop Antarctica! I am glad you are doing so well...and enjoying your mushie time. I guess I will enjoy it also- when I get to it.But, 5 weeks on liquids has been good for me. Yeah, I don't think I will be trying those eggs anytime soon- I had heard they are pretty difficult.I keep getting this mental flash of that leetle leetle passage thru the band...and what happens when a lump of food blocks it!or a skin from a tomato or apple.CRIPES! I'll try baby food first I think, like Farex and purreed dinners, just add extra protein powder to them. Did you have shoulder tip pain? I still have it, even 16 days afterwards. It isn't as bad as it was, but it still is mighty unpleasant.:w00t: Thanks for answering, and giving me some ideas for mushies. :smile2:

I have really messed up with the amount and what I eat ....
zara gray rowe replied to evh's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Everyone, I feel like the original poster above. I am at six weeks out of surgery tomorrow and I am getting my first fill tomorrow. I am nervous. I have struggled with my appetite being basically normal, my port feeling weird when I sleep, cravings from what I used to eat, struggling in general and just feeling like I'm always eating too much and the hunger takes over my brain and before I know it I've eaten a ten piece mcdonalds nuggets. Am I horrible??? For about two weeks I've really felt like I don't even have a band. A typical day for me: breakfast the 3 mini chicks at chick fil a with the hashbrowns and then for lunch I might have like 4 slices of turkey from the public deli, sliced very thin and a piece of cheese and maybe at most a half of a cup of mashed potatoes, then for dinner I might have 6 fish sticks and 1/2 a cup of green beans and maybe a mitts applesauce. Am I doing things all wrong!?!?!? I'm seriously worried about my appointment tomorrow. Help!!! -
Has anyone had the surgery alone?
JessM11 replied to kathyhall's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel as if I will be doing this alone. Not that I chose to, but my family is very judgmental so when I got the courage to tell them I was waiting on the insurance approval for WLS they (my mother and younger sister) said they didn't Agree but would be my support system. Less than an hour later I overhear them talking about me in the kitchen about how drastic and unnecessary this is and they will not condone it or help me through this. I am a single mom with a 19 month old and I will be hospitalized for 2-3 days. My daughters dad is in the army on a field exercise for a month and my surgery is in 3 days. I had to go to his parents to keep my daughter for me while I'm in the hospital and to help me with things at my apt post op. For about 4 weeks I tried to talk to my mom about it because I was hurt but her response was always "I don't want to talk about it" well when it came time for my liquid diet, her response was "surgery?!?! Next week?!?! How come you are just now telling me?!" Seriously woman??? So my good guy friend (kinda boyfriend) and a few coworkers are seriously my only support system (oh and my exs parents). -
Breaking the pre-op liquid diet
Calimomof3 replied to Firefly2000's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm right with you!! I have surgery on Thursday and tonight the cravings are the worst!! I've had no issues the past two weeks but tonight my stomach was growling terribly and the thought of another shake would make me ill. I want so bad to have the last meal before surgery be something tastey and satisfying but I've worked this far and in no way do I want to mess up surgery risks -- so I had some chicken broth and black cherry Jello. Hang in there, drink some Water and think about what the future holds for you! -
:help:Does anyone else have the "Easy" band? I had one fitted in Manchester in March & at first completley lost my appetite resulting in a weight loss around 14 lbs. My appetite then returned, as predicted because it seems to be caused purely by the operation, & I found I had almost no restriction. After the requisite 8 week wait I was reduced from the open state of 29mm to 25mm under x-ray. Still I had little restriction & actually gained 2lbs! Last adjustment to 23.8mm & although I have slight restriction with some foods especially bread & I do eat slowly I could still eat a largish meal. Ok, I do realise one has to "work" with the band & I have to admit I haven't always managed my 10,000 daily steps but has anyone else had this experiance? At what point I wonder will this famous "sweet spot" be reached? As I understand it the easy band can only close to 20mm so I've not got far to go although I'm told only small adjustments are safe at this point. I also notice fizzy drinks don't have any adverse effects? I've also had a few strange chest pains, anyone else? Come on you "easy company" bandsters, this may be brilliant technology but does this thing really ever work?

Banded yesterday and feel terrible!
joe7777 replied to Band-aided's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
First 2-3 days pain sucked, after that it was better, i thought that i didnt get gas pains but now looking back after 1 week i felt so different after, so the uncomfortable feeling in the stomach was either swelling or gas. -
I am going for my 3rd fill this coming Saturday, but something wonderful has happened. I am starting to feel some restriction! I had my second fill 3 weeks ago (total of 3.6 cc's) and I just started feeling restriction from that fill this week. Fills works in strange and wonderous ways. LoL Seriously I am happy, but I am still going for my 3rd fill because it is just light restriction. Thanks for your input.

I had my first fill on 8-7-2010, but so far I feel very little restriction. I read that it sometimes takes two weeks to feel restriction after a fill. Why would it take so long?

In Australia the government is instituting obesity tests on 3 year olds. I'm not joking - 3!! The problem is complex. I knew one mother who gave her 3 year old fat reduced milk, mistakenly believing it was good for him. She was very looks conscious herself. Parents today often have no or very little, contact with extended family memebers, so don't get the knowledge and help passed to them. They are working much longer hours nowadays. And its not a luxury, many have to do it to survive. Life is so much about convenience, its so much easier to run passed Maccas (Mcdonalds) on the way home than it is to cook once you get there. Cooking healthy food doesn't take long at all. Most things can be done in less than 30 minutes, but people view it as too much hard work. Grab take-away on the way home, grab something from the freezer and zap it. So much easier and no thinking involved.

I want to get unfilled, at goal for over 3 yrs
wombat712 replied to Mariposa Bella's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't know about unfills, but have you tried medication for reflux? I take aciphex which is a small pill. Slightly bigger than birth control. If I don't take it then I get the acid in the throat. With the med, I can lay flat at night without issues. They implied that this wouldn't be an issue after banding - it worked for all of 3 months for me before it came back  I wish you luck in getting it taken care of! I know it's miserable wombat -
I want to get unfilled, at goal for over 3 yrs
socalgal3 replied to Mariposa Bella's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Have you seen your doctor lately? I would think heartburn that bad would require an unfill. I've been unfilled for nearly half of my journey due to being too tight, a slip, etc. I was still able to reach goal and have maintained(so far!) for 3 months. You may just want a slight unfill, not a total unfill, but I would definitely check with the doctor. You don't want to make things worse. Don't be afraid of weight gain. You may just need an unfill for a few weeks to heal/rest and then get some fill back to maintain. Congrats on the great weight loss and maintaining it for so long! That is what we all hope for and you've done it! -
I know exactly how you are feeling It is kind of a let down once you are healed and havent had your first fill yet, you feel like you did before surgery, I am a little worried because I cheated and ate solid foods on my 16 day (5 days before I was supposed to) everything went down just fine no problems but I got scared that I might be messing up something and went back on my liquids for the last 5 days. I'm going to get my first fill on the 24th I am going to be staying overnight so that if I need an adjustment Dr Ortiz can do it while I am still close to Mexico, does anyone out there think I should stay longer than 2 days? I dont want to have to fly back in a week because its not quite right it cost about $600 every time I will have to fly in for a fill.

Hi Kim, I had my first fill on 5/16 and supposedly had 1.5 cc's of saline. I say this because I had my second fill yesterday (7/5) of .5 cc's and just as my P.A. was filling my band he said I actually only had .8 cc's of saline from the first fill. Also, hit a plateau and haven't lost any weight in 4 weeks. I've been doing cardio and weight training 4-5 times per week, but I seriously doubt I'm building THAT much muscle. Maybe I'm losing inches instead of pounds?? Anyway, when I went for my second fill yesterday, I questioned my P.A. about the amount of my original fill (1.5 cc's vs actual .8 cc's). He said there is apparently 'dead air' inside the band prior to fill and sometimes the first amount of saline doesn't always equal out. Some of the saline actually stays in the port tubing (makes sense) while the other amount goes into the band itself. I was getting concerned thinking I was already at 1.5 cc's and was still starving....and worried that I may not ever become satisfied as the band only holds 4 cc's total. I am now up to 1.3 cc's of saline and am eating mushies today and tomorrow, and back on solid foods Sunday. I can already tell that I have a bit more restriction, but am still not where I want to be. My doctor assures me that I WILL feel a bit more restriction than I have in the past. I was VERY discouraged and frustrated because even though I've lost 26 pounds, all of my weight loss occurred BEFORE MY FIRST FILL. My first fill really hasn't done anything as far as weight loss, and I'm hoping my second fill yesterday will make a difference. Hang in there!

I just found out Friday that I have skin cancer. They took a biopsy out of a spot on my cheek and said they'll let me know this week what's gonna happen. I'm right with you though girl. Scared!!!
