Banded 9/24, some questions about the pain and eating
xemi replied to xemi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All the doctor did was give me a sheet that stated I should be on a liquid diet for 20 days and on that it says half a cup of yogurt for lunch amongst soup and juice and Jello. The soups are also low fat milk based soups, but no chunks. And that I have to have 6-8 cups of Water during the day, which is so hard to do. Mostly all he said was I'll learn as time goes by, to chew my food a lot and not to throw up. He may have said more but I was so freaked during the consult that I don't remember, lol. My mom says he also said I should be on mushies for 2 months before attempting regular food. I knew he didn't give me much direction but wasn't aware until now just how little he did give. Momamia, would you mind sharing what instructions you were given? Thank you, Violinist, your answer also helped. I appreciate any help I can get. -
Plain is yuck agreed, try greek yogurt with fruit on the bottom just dont stir in the fruit..you get a lite flavor but not all the sugar
-
My NUT has suggested mixing in flavoured protein powder to plain Greek yogurt- like the Nectar Fuzzy Navel, Lemonade and other fruit flavours. Bonus is you get a extra punch of protein! Also try the Torani sugar free flavor syrups for coffee/italian sodas. You want to try and keep your carbs- sugars low, especially the first few months after surgery. Read labels- just because something is fat free (yoplait yogurt is a good example) doesn't mean it's going to be low in carbs/sugar...in fact it usually means sugars will be higher to make up for the loss of flavour from the missing fat. I'm pre sleeve but my husband Fiddleman is seven months out and I've gone with him to every pre and post op appointment.

Not looking for negativity but positive encouragement....

Don't beat yourself up. I have had icecream and sherbert over the months. Just don't do it often and don't eat large amounts. For example, If I am at a birthday party I skip the cake and have a little bit of icecream. That way I join in the celebration and have a little treat. I make healthy choices most of the time and avoid that deprived feeling by a tiny treat now and then. There are many healthier choices to choose from as well. Read the lables in the freezer isle.......fat free, frozen yogurt, sugar free .......... -

Welcome! There is a pregnancy forum here at LBT. I believe most women get their bands unfilled while preggers to allow for more nutrition. Sometimes bands need to be replaced. You can search pubmed for studies on it. It is an implanted device, and something to be considered. Tell your surgeon you have worked with nutritionists in the past. I only had to do one consultation to be sure I understood how I should eat post-banding. As she is in my surgeon's office, it was part of an insurance-covered office visit with my surgeon. How much you will be able to eat will depend on your restriction level. I am in maintenance mode now. I eat about 1500-1700 calories a day. A meal for me is about 3 oz of solid Protein, 1/2 cup of veggies, and some starch. I do not eat low-carb. I still eat all the foods I used to with the exception of very soft doughy breads (they get stuck) and white meat chicken (also gets stuck). I still have my junk food treats. Just not as often, and not as much. If I cannot eat solid protein, my surgeon wants me to come in for an unfill. It is unacceptable to him for me to rely on Protein shakes and "slider" foods--foods that slide right on through the band. Those are foods like Soups, yogurt, and highly processed junk like chips, Cookies, ice cream, etc. Advice for the early stages...don't get caught up in Last Supper Syndrome. you WILL eat your favorites again. There is no need to gorge yourself on food like you will never eat it again. My diet is pretty "normal" now. Except when my stomach is irritated from a bad stuck episode, most people watching me would not know that I've had weight loss surgery. Don't stock up on boodles of protein shakes until you know that your surgeon wants you on them long-term. I bought a bunch of the stuff after reading on here how many people continue to use them after banding only to find out that my surgeon doesn't want me using them. He wants me eating my calories. I was only allowed them during the full liquid phase of post-op. This forum is a great place for support. My surgeon has support groups, but his are too late in the evening for me to attend as I start work early in the morning. I hang out here a lot and credit it with with my continued success. It helps me keep my head in the game. In real life I only know one other banded person. It's great to come here and be able to connect with peeps who "get it!" -
650 cal/day.........850 cal/day?! It's no wonder you're hungry. Normal bandster diet is 1200-1500 cal/day. Some don't lose at the higher end, so they keep to the lower end. Man..........who told you that? And why would they have told you such a low caloric intake when your body needs to heal post operatively? When I was first post op, I was physically unable to get 1200 calories in. I remember being happy getting in 800 cal, but that was because I felt full all the time......not because somebody told me to restrict my caloric intake. In fact, my dietician told me during the first two weeks to focus on healing and whatever I get in, I get in. At that point, I was eating about 5 or 6 small meals a day. With such a low intake, you may put your body into starvation mode and sabotage your metabolism, aka: weightloss. Kick it up a notch. Choose healthy foods, but don't be afraid to eat. If you're hungry, eat as long as it's within your doctor's consistency recommendations. At 9 days, full liquids seems appropriate. And remember, those that are liquid pass through the band without much resistance so you won't feel much satisfaction from them. Go with some substance. The yogurts, puddings, ricotta cheese. Good Luck,

so i'm 16 days post op. i've lost a little over 20lbs! but i can see my weight loss slowing down....and i think it's my low calorie intake. i have yet to get all my Water and Protein in....try as i may, it still hurts going down!!!! just a few bites of something (sf pudding, thick Protein shake, yogurt, even water!!!!) and it feels terrible....like i swallowed rocks and they're churning in my stomach. does this go away? my calorie intake is only about 200-300/day, is that okay for the stage i'm at? i know i'm dehydrated....but water almost seems to cause me the most pain. am i sabotaging my weight loss? it just sucks!! i'm not hungry at all....just thirsty, but again, drinking is so uncomfortable. does this get better with time? megan

low calorie intake...bad?
Josephine replied to Megan_SF's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The wrong kinds of carbs can cause a stall in your weightloss. If you are still having trouble eating make sure you get 500 calories from Protein shakes, milk, buttermilk, string cheese.. anything you can get down. Since our bodies are mostly Water, all of our vital organs and systems require water to function. If you are not getting in enough liquids, your body will start to steal it anyway it can to keep your organs functioning. That means it's not using water to flush the fat out of your system and you hit a stall. Water and protein is VITAL to your healing and weightloss during this time. I had so much trouble getting both in during the first month and my LIFESAVER was the Syntrax Nectars. I just mixed in 6 scoops of the twisted cherry one with 2 packages of lemonaide koolaide mix and filled up the gallon jug and shook it up. That was 138 grams of protein and I made myself drink it over a 2 day period. 69 grams per day, plus a bit of cheese or yogurt that I'd force down. I think that helped me get in my protein and water and helped my body heal very well and produced a nice weightloss. -
Yaaaaaaaaay, eggs, beans, potatos OH MY!
FishingNurse replied to newme31's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Personally I did not and do not eat low fat or low sugar/ sugar free anything post op. Everyone is different but it has worked for me. Fat is not a concern when you can only take in 400 calories a day so early on. When I can eat 5 bites of something I want it not to have added sugar because the fat has been removed, and I don't want the toxic fake sugar in sugar free stuff. I also think that you crave less when you have for example... full fat cheese instead of low fat. Its much more satisfying. I ate sugar free, fat free everything since I was 8 years old and I ended up 262lbs. I have maintained my weight loss goal +/- 5lbs for an entire year now NOT eating fat free and low fat stuff. This is just my opinion. Other ideas in the mushy phase: Greek Yogurt Egg Salad- Re-fried Beans with a little cheese and sour cream. Cream of wheat made with milk- amps up the Protein Baby Bel cheese-- if you let it get slightly warm it melts in your mouth. each has 6 grams of protein- I lived off of these for months! -
3 Months Out And Sick To Stomach
royboy replied to crazycatlady8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too have trouble with meat, any kind of meat! I ate some venison sausage the other day, mind you a skinny piece and it didn't sit well. Feels like minor pain or upset stomach is my best way to describe it. Even fish does this to me. I ate some Soup my wife made last nite, has burger in it, same feeling so I gave the rest to the dog. The up side of this is my cholesterol is down, way down. LOL I do hope the feeling gets better with time though. Seems I only eat for energy anymore which in my head is far better than the way I used to eat. Yogurt, cottage cheese, creamy Soups all go down good, so I guess I eat more of those until my stomach tells me differently? I feel better that I'm not alone. LOL If that makes any sense. Pre op weight 316 down 70 pounds since Dec 5th. -

I started riding a bike at GOLDS which is my gym last week. I started out at 9 miles and am up to 12 miles a day. Thought I'd start walking 15 minutes, and ride for 45 to burn off more calories. My diet's OK. For breakfast I'm eating yogurt, drink a diet drink mid morning, and then eat a small portioned lunch. For dinner, I'm counting calories and trying smaller portions. Since surgery in Sept., I've lost around 26 pounds. Should I be losing weight faster? jp

Just had my gastric bypass surgery on Tuesday
Merri Beth replied to Kelseydawn's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the sleeve on Nov 29th. I also had hiatal hernia repair, which I did not know I even had the hernia so glad they found and repaired that while i was under. I have been on the liquids since Nov 14th. I go back to Dr for check up on Dec 8th. So its liquids until at least that time. The thought of the protein shakes was almost too much, they were so sweet, I had to figure out something. I haven't been told I can have soups. The only addition to the pre-op diet us 1% milk and greek yogurt, non fat, zero sugar. So I was feeling desparate for a change. My friend who is a nurse, put together this mixture for me and it is so much more tolerable and keeps me full. It is one half cup of the unflavored yogurt, one half cup of milk, one protein shake, one scoop of unflavored protein powder all blended in blender. The cosistency is good, the flavor is so much better, the sweetness is cut more than in half. I feel so much more satisfied with this "potion" than any I have tried yet. Once i finish the amount in the blender, I know I have hit 87 GM of protein for the day. My friend did the protein calculations for me to make sure i was getting enough. As for getting through it each day, I pray a lot, and keep my mind focused on the end goal. I am also making sure I rest a lot. I have learned from past surgeries that pushing things to fast always backfires. I am practicing positive thinking and positive meditations as well. This might sound crazy but so far it is working to get me through the days of liquids. Plus, I figure if i made it this far i can do another day, as you said one day at a time, seems to be the best solution! You can do this, you are doing it and that is fantastic. -

first day transition from liquid to mushies
wannalise replied to cwalker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to go at it pretty slow. I am almost 6 weeks out and still am pretty careful. I do 2 protein shakes a day and then 3 soft meals, the greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and I did really well with scrambled eggs mixed with cottage cheese because they are super soft. It is crazy how different food goes down then liquids. Please just listen to your body and if it isn't ready for something hang on. You will get there. Also, my sleeve is different on different days. Some days things go down easily and some days my body is just more into liquids. Good luck and take it slow! -
Food For Airplanes
Humming Bird replied to Cingulus's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know about stuff to take on the plane, but I recently spent many hours stranded because of snow. You know those frozen yogurt places they have in many airports? I asked the kid working there to look up the grams of protein in a small cup of the frozen yogurt.... 35g ! So I got one! Yum! At that point I had 4-5 hours to kill and didn't care about the carbs. I asked, but don't remember what it was. -
Pre-op diet/post-op diet
Bufflehead replied to 8petals's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon requires being on a 48 hr clear diet before surgery. I know I could have Jello, chicken broth, cranberry/apple juice, basically anything clear. Does anyone have suggestions of other things I can consume? Tea, beef broth, miso broth, G2, Vitamin Water Zero, Propel Zero. You can get protein powders that mix well with water -- Unjury chicken soup, Syntrax Nectar fruit or tea flavors. You can buy individual size packets of those, which would probably make sense if you don't have an extended clear liquids diet post-op. What I really need suggestions for is my post-op diet. What are the best things to consume post-op that are filled with Protein? On full liquid phase: protein shakes Puree phase: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese (Google Eggface ricotta bake for a great recipe), scrambled or poached eggs, refried beans with melted cheese. I made a lot of pureed casserole (minus the high carb ingredients) type things. Basically I would take meat, add a flavorful sauce, puree, put in a tiny little ramekin and heat in the microwave maybe with a little melted cheese on top. So, salmon with dill sauce, chicken breast with marinara sauce & mozzarella cheese, tuna with low fat roquefort dressing & swiss cheese, turkey with peanut satay sauce & jack cheese, ground bison with low carb bbq sauce & cheddar cheese -- you can do whatever works for you. How long was it until you could even try a solid? Everything will depend on the food progression your team gives you. I am sure your dietitian will give you more info as your date gets closer, but if you are curious now, call them up and ask if they can email you a copy of your post-op eating guidelines, or if you can stop by and pick up a copy. My team has extremely conservative guidelines, so I was on full liquids for four weeks, purees for four weeks, and then soft foods (easily cut with a fork) for four months. but how do I check my private messages? Someone messaged me last night, and now I can't find it to respond lol. I use the website, not the app, version of bariatric pal so unfortunately I can't help you here. Hopefully someone else can step in and provide an answer. -
@@aclinton16 - Try dipping apples in your PB instead. As for veg I would go for chopped spinach instead of broccoli or green Beans. Spinach has more Iron and Protein and is not as fiborous as broccoli or green beans. Fiborous veg can produce gas and be harder to digest. Your nutritionist should be able to give you a list of recommended foods. I also eat a lot of soft scrambled eggs or finely chopped hard boiled eggs. In my egg salad I use half plain greek yogurt and half mayo or skip the mayo altogether and use a bit of avocado which is a healthier fat.

Hi all! I was banded on Jan. 14, and I was able to start mushies yesterday (Jan. 19). I think I have been on liquids for so long that I am taking the pureed food diet to an extreme, and I want to make sure I'm not doing anything bad. I've read so many threads, and some people talk about having things under soft foods that I thought I could have this week (like scrambled eggs or noodles). I am basically thinking anything I can put in the blender and puree is fair game at this point. I just pureed a small bowl of macaroni and cheese for dinner, and ohmygod, it was so freaking good!!! I really have been trying to stick with healthy foods, but tonight, I just wanted something with a little more substance. Other things I bought to puree are vegetable beef Soup, canned chicken with cream o'chick soup and mushrooms, turkey chili (with added steamed veggies), refried Beans and salsa, tuna salad, egg salad, pudding, peaches, bananas, cream of wheat/oatmeal. Are these things all okay? Or are pureed foods supposed to be things like yogurt, applesauce, and soup? What is everyone else doing for their mushies?

So I am 1 week out of surgery and have just moved to full liquids. I have been eating about 1/2 a pudding cup at a time or 4 oz of cream Soup at a time throughout the day. I just went back and read through my book again and I realized it said I should be eating a teaspoon to a tablespoon of food "at a time" Does this mean I should be having a tablespoon of pudding/soup for a meal? I'm having trouble knowing how much food I should be eating. Overall how much should I be eating in a day? and how long did it take you to transition from clear to full to pureed etc. For example today I have eaten in total: 1-1 1/4 pudding snack 3 oz applesauce 2 oz yogurt

full liquids, shakes, yogurts, sf pudding for me anyway. You really should get some info from your doctor.

Are you getting any protein in? Think out that yogurt with some unsweetened almond milk and see if you can drink the protein rather than eat it. I find the ready-to-drink shakes are gross and hard to swallow, so I am using Syntrax Nectars (powder) made with either unsweetened almond milk or water. Getting the fluids in is very important, so you don't get dehydrated, so keep sipping. Baby sips, all the time. It helps if you are sipping something with protein in it, but if you have to do water or diluted juice to get/keep the fluids down, that's a start! Don't worry, it'll get easier. Just keep trying.
