2 weeks out, what is the pain???
Boredoncemore posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Doc gave me the okay to progress to soft foods, after a few days of pureed. There is no way! I hurt soooo bad, what does gas feel like? My stocmach gets hard no matter what I eat, I can feel it. Past 3 days I've eaten very little, less than 2 oz of malt o meal, or 2 oz of yogurt and it just HURTS. I stand in the hot shower and I can feel my stomach slowly relax. What are the stomach spasms? I burp and it seems to relieve a little but my ribs hurt and all the down, like I can feel it in my intestines?? surly not! I can drink fine, which is what I've been doing to keep hydrated-Water water water, but add any food and the pain starts. Last week I had mashed potatos and such without this much pain....my period started and I have intense pains with it too, (endo, but I can't take any meds yet I don't think so I'm dealing with that) but could it be messing with my stomach? I'm not sure what is going on!! How does gas feel and how does stomach spasms feel for everyone else? -

The directions should be on the can. The protein powders I have call for 8-10 oz of water or milk. I use almond milk when using powders. I drink the premade Premier Protein in chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. I also bought Rob Jarrow unflavored protein to mix into things like pureed banana and yogurt. I bought protidiet cream of chicken soup on Amazon which was good. Sugar free ice pops are good too for fluid.

Preop eating was an intensely satisfying experience. I loved the stuffed to the gills feeling and that guilty feeling that I shouldn't be eating something but I was doing it anyway. I ate when I was bored, I ate when I was angry, I ate when I was happy...I would eat all day long sometimes, especially when stressed out. Food made me incredibly happy. Guilty, afterward, but for a brief time I was very happy. Food was definitely like a drug for me. I'm only seven weeks out, and now I've done a complete 180 turn. I don't like eating. It's not enjoyable. I enjoy the taste of two or three bites, and then I'm tired of eating. I have to remind myself to eat, because more than once I've gotten to the end of the day on a yogurt and a cheese stick. I don't want to eat when I'm happy, or sad and I absolutely cannot eat if I'm angry or stressed. It is physically impossible for me to overeat. If I eat one bite too many, or even if I drink too much water too fast, up it comes (more like a productive burp than vomiting) and I have to stop. While these are good steps to ridding myself of food addiction, I'd have to say that it's also depressing. I'm moodier and slightly depressed lately, mostly because my main coping strategy was cut out with my stomach. So I'd say that yes, the surgery could probably help with this (though not everyone experiences a lack of hunger or cravings post op) but that therapy is probably still needed for some people (like myself) to help cope with the major upheavals WLS can cause. The surgery can fix your tummy and possibly cause the cravings and the emotional eating to stop, but it doesn't fix whatever made you overeat in the first place. ~Cheri

I am sure you are laughing at my title but hear me out... I had surgery December 30th. I'm on phase 2 and having a really hard time getting Protein in and my Vitamins. The most protein I've gotten is 25g. I am not a Protein shake woman. I tried them all and I hate them all. I want to gag just thinking about it. Same thing with the vitamins I barely take them. I am sick of Greek yogurts. I am also disappointed that I'm on a stall and not losing anything. Today I went to my grocery store and I bought baby food. Yes you heard correct. I got this brand called Beech Nut and I got the chicken and chicken gravy and I have to say that I loves it. It has 7g of protein for 2.5oz... Not bad at all and 0 carbs 70 calories. I also got sweet cord which only had 2g of protein. Do you guys thing it's bad to eat it at least until phase 3 where I can have Protein Bars which will be easier to get the protein?!

I am 1 week out also! So far I've lost 14 lbs. I have been able to get 60 grams of protein in the last couple of days (unfortunately, my goal is 77-96 grams...so I'm still not at my goal). I have a lot of tummy rumbling, my sleeve is very noisy. I have times where I feel hungry also, but I've seen on this board that many times than can be stomach acid and not true hungry. So I'm trying to just focus on drinking as much as I can and it seems to help. When I really feel hungry then I have applesauce, broth, jello, or yogurt, those are all on my plan for now. I don't get to soft foods until 22 days post-op. -

I CAN EAT ! YOU CAN EAT !
Humming Bird replied to SkinnyInside=)'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are a few things I always keep on hand : Chili, canned chicken, oatmeal, protein powder, cheese, leafy type salad, yogurt / lite, drinkable smoothy type ......... Each of us end up being a little different with what we can and can't eat. I've been banded almost 2 years, so pretty much get in the groove with my own eating patterns. It takes a little time to get it figured out, but I try to keep variety without crossing that line that would cause me discomfort or other problems. You are pre-op? I ended up buying way too much liquid type stuff for the post-op requirements, but it's so hard to know. I got a big bottle of apple juice, took one sip post-op, and ended up throwing out the rest because it was way too sweet. I was never a fan of yogurt before the band, but sure did eat quite a bit in that first few months post-op. I still eat it and put in the blender with protein powder, fruit and ice. -
I don't think I could survive on that little. I have 6oz-8oz meals, 3x a day. Also 2-3 glasses of skim milk a day (my doctors recommendation). If I want a snack I will have 4 or 6oz of Greek yogurt and don't feel guilty about it. That being said, I only have 1cc in my band, so that may change.

so many post op questions
lessofmeismore replied to wrightan5's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First never ever leave your wife with her father ever again how horribly cruel he was both physically and mentally :( Now the drain hurts, its like heaven when it is gone. So that may help. Stay on top of her pain. Take the pain med as scheduled do not wait til she hurts. Don't force protein or foods right now. She is healing. Encourage sipping of fluids, water, gatorade, sf popsicles. Filling her tummy with yogurt or protein will just make her miserable right now. If she asks for a bite or a lick, let her have that...she definitely shouldn't be forcing protein right now. Fluids fluids fluids. Glad she has you. Take care of her. Let her know that drain removal should help so much! Most people are on liquids for two weeks so be gentle. At 6 days focus on fluids in small sips through out the day. When you start her on thinned protein drinks try premier protein ready to drink shakes from sams or Costco. Never push intake but be consistent with fluid. Aim for an ounce every 20 minutes or so but don't be a drill seargent She is lucky to have you! -
No hunger, yet no fullness
quints replied to Candace2314's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm starving! I was sleeved on April 4th, it'll be a week come Monday since my surgery, and I feel like I could eat a sandwich! I don't have any of the symptoms I've been reading about on here. I've been staying on the liquids, tea, yogurt, broth, and I pureed some lite vegetable Soup yesterday and got 2 meals out of it, but I feel more bloated then I do full. The only discomfort I have is from my outside stitches tugging and feeling itchy, but they are due to come out on Wed., and walking, I walk slow because of all the liquids, I get a cramp in my side if I don't. My stomach is not bothering me at all, even after I pureed the soup, I don't know if I can last another week on just this type of diet. I'm beginning to wonder if they took out half my stomach or missed and took something else? lol.. Is anyone else feeling like this? Has anyone started adding soft foods to their diet, like soup, in the second week without having to puree everything? What foods can I eat without causing any damage to my stomach? Hello Everyone. I was hoping someone might have heard/seen/experienced this problem with their band. I was banded on 12/28/2006. I am still too tight for mushies. They just won't go down. I have been to a well respected lapband doc here locally and he has checked me under fluoro several times and the band is not slipped/agitated at all. I am just a super tight fit. I have the 10cc Sweedish band and have NO FILLS. All I can have is liquids. No puddings/applesauces/yogurt as they won't go down. Nothing is stuck in the band..... What to do? Any ideas? The weight loss is great! 100+ lbs in less than 2 months but I would like to taste real food again some day. I look forward to anyone's thoughts on this. Eric P.S. My fill doc is absolutely stumped too.

I had my surgery on 2/22/08. I have lost 19 pounds. My doctors liquid diet after surgery I could have runny mashed potatoes and yogurt. Everyones diets are different. I feel guilty that if I eat those potatoes I will gain the weight that I have lost. I am starting to feel hungry though and I have another week to be on liquids until next week of pureed? Anyone have suggestions?

One thing no one tells you about is bandster hell and yes you do have to diet just like before the band to lose weight during this time. Here is a blog I posted about bandster hell, I hop it helps. It’s Not Bandster Hell…It’s the Waiting Room of Band Opportunity I read few blogs today of folks that are in the proverbial Bandster Hell. Some are eating and frustrated, some are using Weight Watchers to fill the void and others are just hungry. I do think that LapBand medical community needs to be a little more effective in helping people through this phase of the process. My take on things is they do a great job upfront with the sales pitch and the pre-op prep. I think most doctors do a good job with the operation day and the basic post-op recovery. However, there seems to be a decided gap between the operation and the restriction phase of the band process. Which as we all know has been labeled Bandster Hell or BH for this blog. So for those of you in, or approaching BH, here is a check list to think about: 1. Avoid Consumption as Usual – it seems fairly common that once you are basically healed, many people can eat all they want and some like to test the limits of what you can eat. Needless to say this is not what we want to do. Just, assume that you can eat like the old you, but don’t do it. 2. Prepare a BH Menu – Knowing the BH is coming, plan a special menu that is healthy and helps you keep the right habits until you have restriction. I would plan it just like you were at restriction just don’t beat yourself up if the portions are bigger during this time. One person was doing Weight Watcher, some do South Beach, but whatever it is knowledge and planning are power here. 3. Focus on 5-6 Meals a Day – For me the best way to manage BH is to get some 8oz dishes with lids (I got mine at Smart and Final) then plan on eating every 3-4 hours. This keeps me focused on small meals, but allows me to have some extra healthy food. 4. Get Your Protein – Use whey Protein to help you get enough protein. I mix mine with yogurt and blueberries, oatmeal and other foods to load up on it. 5. Focus on Exercise – This is a great time to get your exercise program going and that will help you interim weight management, and make the time when you do have restriction more productive. 6. You Are Not Failing – BH is part of winning in the long term. You are supposed to go through this part of the journey. Don’t beat yourself up. This time is available to you to prepare for the restriction phase of the process 7. You Did Not Do This For Nothing – Reading hundreds of these threads from folks who have walked through the valley of BH, all agree when you get to the other side it will be worth it for you. You did not deal with Pre-Op, spend the money, or go through surgery for nothing. 8. Embrace the Process – This is one of the stages of BH, don’t fight it, make it work for you. Focus on picking good foods, get your body in better shape with exercise and focus on the positive. Like many of you I am trudging my way through BH. I am staying focused getting to the other side and finding the promised land of restriction.

I'm with you! I thought for SURE I was healing way more slowly than anyone else ever in the history of being banded! But I really turned a corner around 6 days post-op, and have felt a small percentage better everyday since! I looked on here, surprised I didn't read about more people being in tons of pain and really uncomfortable like I was (port pain for me, minimal gas pain), and really was bummed with myself for not progressing faster. Stick with the small activity, keep in mind you're barely eating any calories! Of course you have no energy. Once you're able to get in more full liquids (I highly recommend focusing on Protein shakes/carnation instant breakfast/greek yogurt to get your protein up), you'll start to feel better. Promise!

Bariatric Pal Store??? Non-whey options.
mousecat88 replied to mousecat88's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thank you. I'm not vegetarian or vegan, I just get sick from whey proteins specifically. I can have milk/yogurt/etc totally fine... but when it's a whey shake... super nauseous. I use soy protein shakes. I've found a few things off the bariatricpal site that I've ordered, like the lentil curry and the sloppy joe mix. I did order the oatmeal, which I believe is whey, but sometime it's hit or miss so I'm going to give it a shot! -
Help...I I'mnot losing weight..What have I done wrong?
medicine1girl posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the gastric sleeve done June 5, 2013. I seem to be at a stand still and can't seem to lose anymore weight. I have been at the same weight now for a couple months. I know stress can sometimes play into it but... I watch a coworker lose weight so easy but I haven't been able to. I can't hardly eat more than a few bites at a time, I graze most of the time. I have a hard time getting all the Vitamins and supplements in as well as the Water. I do use unflavored Protein powder with yogurt smoothies and Protein Bars. Can anyone help me figure out what I am doing wrong? -
Stupid mistake 8-days post op!!
bevanfranks replied to bottlerocket's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor told me I should do Clear Liquids for 3 days, then from day 4-7 do full liquids (thin cream Soup strained), Protein shakes, drinkable yogurt (Keifer). . . then on my day 8 (which is today) I'm allowed to try some mushy/soft foods. If it goes well I can continue mushies, if not, do another few days of full liquids. I had cottage cheese today and some blended garbanzo Beans w/liquid to make them smooth like yogurt consistency. I also chewed the cottage cheese because I'm trying to be overly cautious. I also worried, because I see SO MANY people who are on liquids longer-- BUT-- My doc has done several bands, and he teaches other docs how to perform the surgery. He comes highly recommended. So I feel ok w/his recommendation of introducing mushies as long as I tolerate them well. Therefore, I wouldn't worry too much about the fact that you had the eggs (as long as you didn't throw up)-- but from here on out, just make sure you get the eating plan from your doc. You'll likely be introducing some foods soon anyway. At least the "mushies" or soft foods. And chew things really well so they go down easily. Lisa -
Am I eating too much ? Am I eating too much? Protein drink in morning 1/2 cup yogurt Protein water 16.9 oz throughout the day Protein drink made with 8 oz soy milk I feel like I don't know if I should have the protein water and soy in addition to the 3 protein drinks and meals or if it's too much! I figured the soy could count as my afternoon meal and I could count the water as the evening meal

Pills POSTOP?
Estrellita replied to SouthernSleever's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was allowed to swallow pills a week post op. I could only get down the small ones: pepcid and Vitamin B ones. The larger ones I had to crush and dissolve in the Protein drink or in yogurt. I tried swallowing a gel Multivitamin and it was awful!! The calcium I actually chewed. I wouldn't try swallowing horse sized pills. No way! However, three months post op, I can now swallow full all my vitamins! -
I think I may have to keep the Greek yogurt out of the house. I scarfed 3 of them like it was cheesecake.
