  1. I have had my LapBand 3 years today. So it is my anniversary....I have never had one single problem with it. Yes, I have slimed or gotten stuck a few times, but that was probably because I ate too fast. It doesn't happen often. No pain. I get full after a couple of bites of food. But the biggest problem I have had is that I HAVE NOT LOST ANY WEIGHT!!! I feel like a failure. I don't have the issues with the band that a lot of you have had. So I am lucky in that regard. But I read where some of you have lost weight and then either plateaued, had slippage, erosion...all types of unlucky stuff. I have had none of that. Which is great except for the fact that I am still 300 lbs. I eat very slowly with this band. I get full after half a pizza, but I will stay eating another 2-3 slices, if it takes me an hour. I eat everything. I know this is a tool and I need to put my part in, but you come to a point where you just give up and it becomes a habit to take an hour to eat. I don't eat because I am hungry, I eat for other reasons. So changing to this amazing sleeve that you all rave about seems like a great idea, but is it going to work for me if I have the same mindset? I see how some of you exercise 3-5 times per week. That is great. If I were able to do that, I would not even need the band that I have. So I am sure my insurance would cover this revision, but would it even work for someone who just doesn't have the strength that you all have. I have seen a therapist many times over to try and deal with my food and eating problem, but that doesn't seem to work. What is going to happen, is I am going to have a heart attack if I don't change my ways. Even with 3 kids you would think you can control your health for THEIR sake, not even yours. But I still can't. Thanks for listening to me. It always feels good to cry and share!

    Petrified and indecisive

I was in a very similar boat to you! I was just over a 40 BMI, 25 years old, with PCOS and asthma. I had the sleeve surgery in 2014 and lost over 100 pounds and have been maintaining for the past few years. Unfortunately I ended up needing revision surgery because of bad GERD (to bypass), but I am still very happy with my decision and live a pretty normal life. I am able to go out to eat and drink with friends. Feel free to ask questions!
  3. If you don't mind me asking , has anyone had or has had a stomach ulcer ? staple line ulcer ? marginal ulcer ? and if you did have an ulcer at some point. Can you shed some insight and truth on preventive measures, and how to deal with them? You can be honest with me and direct message me about drugs , or alcohol, or weed, or cigarettes or whatever, you took, that caused the ulcers, if you do not want to make it public you can Direct message me , and explain . I would really appreciate any real world facts on this please . thanks so much So far I found out from my dietitian and surgeon : 1, they can heal themselves. 2. there is medication someone can take to heal the ulcer. 3. dying from sepsis is the worst case scenario which is extremely rare according to my doctor and dietitian ?!! thanks so much
  4. I am a revision patient in my 7th week. I can eat 4-5 oz of Protein but if I eat it first like we're supposed to, I'm done. I won't be eating the veggies. I try to stick to 3-4 oz of protein and some veggies at each meal so I can get some veggies. I don't think it's nutritionally sound to just eat meat all the time with nothing else.

    Where is your port?

Mine is below my right breast and about two inches down. Right now, the darn thing is flipped and I have to go for port revision, but this surgery is still worth it!

    Manitoba anyone?

I took two years to research my options and I finally decided to have the vertical sleeve gastrectomy in Mexico because when I researched the band in Winnipeg at the Maples, a couple of things hindered me. One was that if I had the band done in Mexico, there was no one local to do my fills because the Maples absolutely refused to do them even though the device is the same one Maples uses. As well 18,000 vs 4500.....that is a ridiculous difference if you ask me. I went to Mexico in Feb. and had my sleeve and had such a great experience that I work now as a coordinator for them helping others get affordable weight loss surgery. Anyways, when I got back, CBC did an interview on TV and the stupid broad introducing the piece totally twisted what I said and lied outright. She made it sound like I was fighting to have the government pay for my surgery...BOGUS! Of course they won't recant even though the reporter that actually did the interview apologized it caused a rukus nonetheless. I am officially done with the media. I think that Maples shouldn't be so closed about doing fills if you have the surgery done elsewhere. What the heck do you do if you move somewhere and "have" to find someone to do fills. The other thing I was concerned with is band slippage and erosion and possible revision surgery later on...don't want the hassle so opted for the sleeve...one time....over and done with. Good luck with your decision.

    Post-op Physical Restrictions

Am in tears just weighed myself and I have rather put on weight what is going on with me did I had a bypass or should I call my DR help!!!!!!!!!
  8. Hi, I’m new here. I had a gastric bypass (RNY) on Tuesday. I was back home Wednesday and doing ok. I’m living and working abroad in a country where I am not completely fluent in the local language so I wasn’t put into a support group with locals, but hoping I can find that here. ☺️ So far, it certainly hasn’t been a pleasant experience but it’s also nowhere near the nightmare I expected. (I know it’s still early days!)

    Weight Gain After Surgery?

Confused. With the revision, is it basically a surgery to do the RnY all over again a 2nd time?
  10. Hi Just to add what my doc said regarding GERD/heartburn and WLS- I asked specifically as I've been treated for GERD for many years- he said that while there is a chance that reflux may appear or worsen with the sleeve, in his patients, he's only had 3 that needed revision to RnY because of that. I feel confident in going ahead with the sleeve, as weight loss itself may improve my reflux dramatically. Good luck with your decision- as long as it's a fully informed one, it's the right decision for you.
  11. Did u go through this? How do u feel. Are you able to eat? I'm so scared of hairloss too... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using the BariatricPal App No, I haven't but I have seen and talked to a lot of people who has gone through it. When I went to my check up at my bariatric center, I spoke to one girl who said she cried every day since her revision, poor thing . Yeah, I'm worried about hairloss too. I didn't go through it with my band because the weightloss wasn't as drastic, a normal 2-3 lbs a week or slower... So I'm a little worried this time around because our calories are sooo much lower.

    Dr Garcia's Patients

Its for revision patients only so he can check out the band and see what he has to deal with during surgery. We will not have to have anything extra like that done.

No more Lap Bands in my future :(

any updates? i was so frustrated after gaining 20 pounds in the first three months after having my band removed, i was ready for any re-routing, stapling, removing -- or whatever they might want to do to my body to get the weight loss bus moving again... then i realized -- i've ALREADY been through enough with my band surgeries. (in, revision, out). i know what to do and how to do this...i need to at least give it a try. i've been exercising 5-6 week and limiting carbs. i quickly lost five pounds...after that i've averaged only one-half of a pound a week....if that's not discouraging, i don't know what is... no wonder we all quit! but i persevere and the good news is, while some weeks i stay stuck, my downward trend continues.. AND, what's great is this weight, because i'm doing it in a more healthy way -- doesn't come right back on if i stray for a day or two...and all the band weight would come right back... i still have a long way to go -- want to lose another 50 pounds. went to my nutritionist recently complaining about the slowness...she said, "what's your rush." that kind of made me think. and, one final thing... i have to say the 10+ pounds I've lost somehow seems like so much more of a victory than some of my band weight lost. NOT to take away from the effort that's required to make the band work. SO...if you decide not to go the surgical route, as of today, remember you DO have it in you to manage the weight! Don't forget that. Good luck! Elizabeth banded 08-28-03 revised 03-10-05 removed 03-13-06
  14. I'm a band to sleeve revision patient, and during the post-op diet, you do have to chew food very well especially when you first get to solids. Now that I am 7 months out, I can eat anything and do not have to chew things to a mush consistency. I eat steak (medium well), ribs, brisket, chicken breast (cooked anyway except I'm not a fan of fried chicken), venison. Really, the only meat that doesn't work for me is pork. We (my family) cut 95% of pork out of our diet months ago. I did try some pork chops once, and they just didn't work. We don't eat sausage or bacon. We did have a ham for Christmas and I was able to eat it. I still have the habit of eating really moist, or wet meat. I picked that up with my band. I used to have to drown all meats in some sort of condiment. I swear I should of bought stock in Heinz Ketchup and A1 steak sauce because I never ate meat without one of them for 7 months. Now, I don't have to use much, but I still like to have something on the meat I eat. It's a habit now, and I think I like the way it all tastes. I haven't had anything get "stuck" in months. Just to let you know, the "stuck" feeling with the band is completely different than the "stuck" feeling I got with the band. When something did get stuck, it hurt for a second then it would just kind of creep back up the esophagus and come out. I did get a bit of overproduction of saliva, but nothing like the band. The bite would come up, and then it was over. No gagging, no wretching at least that has been my experience. I still take small bites, and eat slow. But, it's what works best for me. The slower I eat the more satisfied I feel. Plus, I can get in a bit more food.
  15. I think we all have to what's best for us. After going thru the pain of my band slipping and throwing up everything that was not liquid and losing way to much hair I was convinced after I had to have it out I would maintain my weight. It slowly came back I after research and checking out every bit of info I could I know gastric bypass is good for me. I don't want to leave the house had depression sore knees, hips and ankles., tired all the time! No sex drive( poor husband ). I am worth it ! We all are! I do t want to die from this sickness!! I don't want to live half a life!! So glad I have friends on here that really are in my same boat!

Could you send it my way also Kit? I'm another looking at a revision. Have to do SOMETHING. I can't believe I'm back up exactly where I was when I got banded 8/05. The hopelessness is suffocating. I haven't seen any Penni updates. Are there some threads I'm missing? Did she disappear along w/ LaMadam & Vines? Kare

    Any Advice??

Slojo- some tips. Bring a book or laptop to the clinic. I was last on the surgery list so I sat in the waiting room for a long time. They gave you a wifi code and I regretted not having my laptop. Another thing... all of us patients were so tired and we were just waiting, so we finally asked them if we could sleep in one of the rooms. They were really nice and told us yes. (It was after everyone had their IV) so those of us waiting got to sleep until our surgery, or until they needed the bed for someone coming from surgery. Sleeping made time pass so much quicker. they do surgeries with the lowest BMI and least complicated first, then down the line to more complicated. I was getting band over bypass and my first surgery was done open chest, so that is why I was last. It was a fun experience and I loved their family atmosphere. I have to say I actually liked the experience better than what I had in the states.
  18. Guess I shouldn't be complaining but.. I go to doc and my BMI is borderline to low. While doc will do bypass he says the girl who handles insurance blew the wind outta my sail.. My BMI was 39.5 I hve no comorbidities ... She need records showing my past 3 year weights ( can't remember back that far what my BMI would have been... I know I was over weight tho! Keeping my fingers crossed it was an exceptae BMI ... Uggh all my life my weight has been an issue !! Now it maynot be?? Seriously:( I know I should like a whinny baby I'm just so worried I won't get approved any one else been thru this? Btw my screen had disappeared. So I cannot see what I'm typing! Sorry if there r miss spellings or sentences that are strange!!
  19. Had my band out 1.5 yrs ago. I was successful for 5 yrs but it slipped. I have tried so hard this last 1.5 yrs but the weight keeps creeping up. I have finally decided to get the sleeve. I'm nervous about long term complications but I can't stand this anymore and need the help. Anyway. That's the very short of my story.
  20. My doctor did the sleeve revision the same time as removing the band. I had gain about 10lbs from Oct to Jan when he removed all the saline from my band. I went in to the hospital on Jan 13 2014 at 185 and Im now down to 173 as of today. He said he didn't know of any reason he couldn't do the sleeve at the same time unless there were complications, obviously there wasn't any.
  21. Congratulations! Great success story. Just say no. There are plenty of others who are comfortable with"going public" they can use as success stories. I had alot of shame around my lapband but by the time I revised to the sleeve..I was like "who am I kidding" - not like my 300# was invisible. I am over it and don't care what people think, but I respect that not everyone is in the same headspace.

@@cat.jackson89 Some people with bypass, I read that some experience Reflux .... You're early post op too I had the growling stomach, bad hunger early post op, and then noticed my reflux was getting worse. Sleeve can be worse for reflux for some. Sometimes reflux can mimic hunger pangs and sensations I have been on Nexium for the past 2 weeks, and this helps my acid reflux and over the top hunger pangs. Other med I was given, rabeprazole or Somac did not help me. I am still reasonably early post op - 8 weeks, but I have now gone through all the food phases and changes, and my hunger is real if I don't eat regularly. Each food stage/phase helped to curb the hunger more for me.
  23. Hello, I had the VSG about 9 years ago. Bad reflux for the last 2 years. Doctors recommend to go full bypass surgery to stop reflux. Anyone heard or know of anyone who experienced this? thank you.
  24. Thank you! I guess I just worry because I am a revision patient and this feels so different from the band. With the band I wasn't able to drink well for weeks after surgery. This time I was drinking well within a few days. I know that it doesn't mean I don't have restriction - just you know...
