Am I the only one wanting sweet liquids???
wannalise replied to MINI-Me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you need a sweet fix that will slide down, I found that if I do 1/2 c of greek yogurt and blend it with the seadless spreadable fruit (its sugar free jelly) and it tastes super yummy and goes down well, and then you can hit your Protein needs more easily. The soft food stage was the hardest for me by far! Best of luck. -
And you may discover things later you never liked that you do now. And perhaps they will stay down where these things don't. I still have trouble with Greek Yogurt, cottage cheese and bananas and I'm 7 months past surgery. And all 3 were go-to prior to surgery, so I do miss them.

Hello all! I'm new onto this site and thought it would be nice to say hi to everyone and I do have a few questions. Well a little about myself: My name is Kelsey. I'm 19 years old. Having my gastric sleeve surgery on the 11/18/2014. I live in OC Cali. I am appx 5'1 and 295lbs. My goal is to be 130lbs and a size 9 My surgeon told me to start my liquid diet on the 1st of this November but I'm looking to start it a little early. He told me that all I'll be eating is 3 Protein shakes for Breakfast lunch and dinner and then a yogurt in between breakfast and lunch and then a broth in between lunch and dinner. But I've heard other doctors will let people have some food. Did anyone strictly follow just liquids? If your surgeon said you were able to have food, did it have an impact on if your liver shrank small enough for the surgery to be done without complications? I know the standard for post op surgery is 3-4 weeks on liquids and then 3-4 weeks of pureed food and then slowly go into eating regular food again. Did anyone stay on the liquid or pureed diet for longer? Maybe 6-7 weeks? I've heard of people doing both. Thank you guys!

I got banded a little over a week ago and at the seven day mark, my doc says that it is okay to have mushies. Well, it seems as though everyone has a different definition of a "mushy". Some say its only oatmeal, soft eggs, yogurt, Soup, etc. Others say that it can be regular food, only blended. I'm still not sure of how much of each i'm supposed to be eating. For example, I ate a whole packet of oatmeal for Breakfast. Mind you, it took me about an hour and a half and having to re-heat like 3 times, but is this normal? Should I be hungry like this? I've made some extra finely chopped egg salad, but how much should I be eating at a sitting (in oz, as I don't have a measuring cup just those oz cups they gave me in the hospital. I don't want to stretch my pouch. I haven't thrown up or PB'd anything. Everything goes down. I have my follow-up appt in about a week and will definitely be mentioning my concerns, but in the meantime, i'm reaching out to my fellow Bandsters here. Thanks for all your help. PS ( i just made some baked salmon and green Beans that I would love to eat, both are really soft, but don't know if I should or how much):smile2:

I dont find it worth the taste sacrifice - I mean if you look at labels comparing a low fat and a normal yogurt serve for serve, for example, you'll often find you only save 40 calories or so and are getting a lot more sugar and carbs and less Protein in the low fat one. Its the same with so many foods. I buy skim milk only, always have done, becuase I really dislike full cream milk or even the 2% stuff, cant bear any taste of cream in the milk - yet I will eat my morning muesli with skim milk and a dollop of cream on it, lol. Totally different taste sensation. Low fat Cookies and such - well those are crap foods whatever way you cut it, you shoudlnt be eating them anyway and if you do, it should be so occasionally that the full fat version is not going to make a difference. I think real, whole foods should be your focus, but I'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to eating a cookie as a snack rather than a small can of tuna, and then taking Vitamins to make up for all the real food I dont eat. I like my salads with a very small amouint of olive oil (or flaxseed oil, full of Omega 3's) and salt and pepper - its heart healthy and you actually absorb a lot more of the nutrients in a salad with a bit of fat. Just a teaspoon is enough to lubricate it and you can also use vinegar if you want that tangy flavour.I'm not fond of low fat salad dressings. One thing I do do though that makes a huge difference - Soups and curries and stuff that use cream or coconut milk - I alwasy substitute low fat evaporated milk in those - cant taste the difference, and it saves sooo much saturated fat and lots of calories and the coconut flavoured evaporated milk tastes just like real coconut milk in Asian dishes.

I haven't had surgery yet, but I keep getting people's opinions.
MINI-Me replied to wannalise's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wannalise - I can totally relate ... My son works part time in a grocery store while going to college. His main area is the dairy department. A woman the other day was looking at some Greek Yogurt and asked his opinion. He told her that I was interested in the yogurt as well since it was high in Protein and good for WLS patients. Without knowing him or my situation, she went off on him. Kept telling him that I didn't need surgery and that I was taking the easy way out. To say the least, he was really upset. He knows my struggles and my family history. He totally supports my decision. To think he was sharing something he was proud of and to be assaulted by a complete stranger. How am I going to handle this type of "conversation" once I'm sleeved. If someone asks, I will be honest. If they "protest", I will let them know that they need to do what's right for them just like I had to do what's right for me. Don't know if that helped or not, but that's my plan. Congratulations on your decision. If you need support or encouragement, there is plenty of that around here. Welcome. -
Stuffed Feta chicken Breasts 1 package of skinless boneless chicken breasts or tenders 1 (4 oz.) pkg. feta cheese 1/2 tsp. basil 1 tsp. pimentos or oil packed sundried tomatoes chopped 2 TBLS. Hellman's Mayo or plain yogurt 1/4 tsp. cavenders seasoning If using chicken breasts, using a knife, make a pocket cutting into the side of the breasts. Mix the feta, basil, pimentos or tomatoes, mayo or yogurt & cavenders. Spoon into pocket made in the chicken breasts. Place stuffed chicken breasts in greased casserole dish. If any filling is left over, spoon over top of chicken breasts. Season with more cavenders. Cover casserole with foil. Bake in preheated, 350 degree oven for 35 - 45 minutes, taking foil off in the last 10 minutes of baking. If you use chicken tenders - Place chicken tenders in greased casserole & spoon feta mixture over top of tenders. Sprinkle with more Cavenders. Cover with foil & bake as directed above. I didn't have sun dried tomatoes or plain yogurt so I improvised with pimento & Hellman's Mayo. It was wonderful! I think if you rolled the chicken in some shake-n-bake it would be even better. Enjoy!

Anyone that started around 300 want to share your stats?
beckyagain replied to Gotalose's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The pureed stage was kind of annoying! 1/4 cup-3 ounces is right about where I was, depending on the food. Some days I could do a little more, some less. I ate a LOT of packets of tuna fish!! Not exactly pureed, but I chewed it forever. I had lots of Greek yogurt (most of the time I couldn't finish the 5 oz. container). -
I am 8 weeks post op, I have lost 35 lbs but only 5 in the last 4 weeks. So I email my nutritionist and she tells me to have either a Protein shake or Greek yogurt for Breakfast not both.. and to limit my Snacks till only when I am hungry. My question is how am I supposed to get 60-80 grams of protein in if I only eat 3 meals a day and no Protein shakes. And I will be lucky to get 600 calories.
-
I also had hair loss and thinning. It usually happens 4-6 months post op. I started taking Biotin 5000mcg capsules from Target once a day. It seems to be helping. I try to get in my protein in daily as well by eating fish, greek yogurt with protein packed granola. Crystal

Experts and Band Veterans...I have a question. I was banded on Thursday (9/27) and I am on full liquids. However, some of the things I'm allowed, I wouldn't really consider a liquid. I'm allowed pudding, yogurt and baby food fruit and applesauce. I'm not allowed creamy or blended Soups until the mushies phase. Seems to me they are the same consistency but whatever. My question is this. Do you think it would be ok to have egg drop Soup in this phase? Or would the egg cause my stomach to start the digestion process that is undesirable so soon after surgery? Thanks

There's a thread pinned to the top of this forum entitled, Share Ideas, What Did You Eat Today? You can get some daily menu ideas from the posts on that thread. I'll start a separate thread here on the Food & Nutrition forum entitled, A Week's Worth of Dinner Menus, and will try to post a new thread with new menus once a week. For general purposes, my typical daily menu is: B: Click vanilla latte protein shake S: skinny latte S: protein bar, or Greek yogurt w/ fruit L: leftovers from the previous night's dinner S: trail mix D: a protein, a non-starchy veg, and a starch S: fruit, or SF pudding

I did measure everything during my weight loss phase. In maintenance mode, I'm less strict about it, but I strongly recommend it because I'm terrible at "eyeballing" a portion. For example, I cut a piece of chicken that I think is 2 ounces, but when I weight it, it's 4 ounces, therefore twice the calories. How much you should eat per sitting depends on your surgeon's guidelines. Some surgeons say eat no more than 1/2 cup, others say 1 cup per meal. How much I can eat of a given food depends on its texture. So I could eat 1-1/2 cups of yogurt, but only 1/2 cup of chicken. Here's an example of portion sizes from the weight loss food plan my dietitian gave me way back when. Breakfast: 1 slice whole grain toast, 1 egg scrambled Snack: 1/2 cup fruit Lunch: 1/4 cup veg, 1/4 cup starch, 1/4 cup protein Snack: 1/2 cup fruit Dinner: same portions as lunch Snack: 1 cup protein shake or 1/2 cup SF pudding

MIJourney replied to varg's topic in Food and Nutrition
Sounds like you're doing fine. I have some bars I like. Just haven't eaten many. Also getting most of my protein from chicken, fish & yogurt. I bought a couple shakes today just for convenience when working long shifts with not much time to eat. -
Couch to 5K - Week of 04 ? 10 November
DeltaDawn replied to losingjusme's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi! Eating for me is still a matter of control and portion. I basically eat about 1500 calories a day and find with that that I am losing about 2 pounds a month... I know it is slow, but I need the calories to keep the running going. On my long run day I have to take a snack with me en route, or I run out of energy. I eat a lot of fruit, salad and yogurt, very little meat and some carbs. Hope this helps. Tomorrow is my 19 km run... wish me luck! Dawn Banded Arpil 4th, 2006 Montreal 358/158/148 -
I need Help!!Unfill or not to Unfill
cookgal replied to ricanlady's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was just about to post saying that I think I was overfilled & what should I do about it...then I saw your post! I got filled 6 days ago & can only get down liquids. I sometimes can get down yogurt but yesterday I tried to eat a little cottage cheese, chewing very good, but it got stuck. I am not loosing any weight either...not really sure why. I know I have been under 500 calories for 6 days. Any advice on if we should get unfilled or not would be great! How long does it take for everything to get back to normal so I can see my true restriction. Thanks all!!! -
Both suggestions are good ones. Start by changing what you munch on, and then work on stopping the munch entirely. I chew gum and had to break out my dusty crafting bag. Now I sit and knit while chewing gum. Don't get bored! Go for a walk, read a book or do something with your hands to keep yourself occupied. It's head hunger - it's an old habit and it's one that probably helped you gain weight. You need to replace the habit with a healthy one. And do yourself a favor and ensure that all of the food in your house is healthy food. It's one thing to snack on greek yogurt or a few almonds but another thing entirely if you're downing handfuls of chips or bowls of ice cream. Good luck! ~Cheri

Does Any One Else Not Like The Feeling Of Food In Their Gastric Sleeve?
RhondaLynn replied to Shoppingbeemom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have enjoyed eating the food, but then after I eat I really wish I had not... . I have only slimmed once.. yuk... then this past Sunday we went to Cracker Barrel and I ate a few bites of fish, chewed really really well, when all of a sudden I felt like the food was backed up all the way to my mouth. I went to the bathroom and opened my mouth and out it came.. not really vomit.. more of a baby's spit up.. it just slid out. I felt better but also felt full. I really should not have felt full at that point. I also have to make myself eat, it taste good in my mouth but my stomach does not enjoy having it in there.... most of the time I'm not sick, but very full feeling. I am trying very hard to get all my Protein in.. I drink at least one Protein Drink a day and try to add Protein powder to my coffee and yogurt. This is just a journey we have to travel.. I am sure it will get better as our tummys heal! Rhonda -
Does Any One Else Not Like The Feeling Of Food In Their Gastric Sleeve?
Rev Me Up! replied to Shoppingbeemom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is hard for me to remember when food started to feel better. Even now, if it is the wrong food, or I don't chew, or I eat too fast/too much it is uncomfortable. There are a couple of major milestones that seem to change how we feel. 3 months is where you can eat the 2 bites and feel less weird. 6 months is where you can eat a bit more and more variety. In the first several months I ate 6 times a day. I portioned everything out into baggies in the morning. I ate yogurt, cheese, and meat. I would have a little oatmeal for Fiber and always take my Vitamin. This helped me get closer to the goals the doc set for me but I think I was around 600 cals per day for at least 4 months. Eating was not a pleasurable experience. It was something I did to survive. I would get weird hot flashes when I was eating. Sometimes I felt like my body would rush all the blood I had to my stomach when I ate - my heart would pound. It will pass, but you are also learning good lessons during this time. I am about 9 months out and I still eat 4-5 times a day because I eat really small meals. Ice cream makes me sick. Bread gives me terrible heartburn. Dark chocolate is my new favorite thing, and my love affair with chicken continues... If I eat too fast, my stomach will be unhappy. I never drink anything after I eat, because it feels horrible. These don't seem like "problems" to me now because they quickly become a habit. Hang in there!! -
What stage is mashed potatoes in?
Andi replied to dat_sweetmami's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The order of phases that we were told at my hospital: Stage 1: Clear liquids w/protein shakes as supplements - 1 week (or more.. the nutritionist gives the ok to move on) Stage 2: full liquid and Protein shakes (yogurts, puddings, kefir, cream soups) - 1 week (again with nutritionist ok to move on) Stage 3: soft solid protein (tuna, ground turkey, cottage cheese, chicken/egg salad, white fish, ricotta) 2 week duration Stage 4: Adding in non protein foods Stage 4 is where we can add other foods back in, but... PROTEIN must be consumed first. If you have a little room left over then you can add things in. They advise for vegetables to always follow the protein, keeping in mind that potatoes are considered more a starch than a veggie. If it's the inside flavoring that you're craving.. do you mean the potato flavor? or is it some sort of spice? If it's spice, you can probably work it into some a mashed cauliflower that might help that craving. Keep in mind that it's not uncommon for tastes to change. You might not even want potatoes. -

What stage is mashed potatoes in?
moregoodtimes replied to dat_sweetmami's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi dat. I noticed that each of your posts is asking about high carb foods....oatmeal, frozen yogurt and now potatoes. Im a total carb addict and these foods are also some of my favorites. Since i know these foods are really hard for me to limit, i really have to avoid them. When we eat high carb foods, they make us want more. While we lose weight, we need to focusnon high Protein foods/drinks. Once we are further down the line we can add back some complex carbs but on a limited basis. I would encourage you to focus on why you had the surgery andnto picture the thin version of youself before you eat any of the foods youve mentioned. They are not going to help you reach goal. We all know how hard it is to break away from our old eating patterns and to develop new, healthier habits, but we just have to if we want this to work. Stick to your plan and try to find something to occupy your time so that your head is filled with thoughts other than those high carb foods. Best wishes for super success!
