    Revision, anyone?

I am also nervous on the risk for revision but like you feel the benefits outweigh them. I'm just praying my dr can do the surgery all in one and I dint require 2 depending in what he finds out from the band once he gets in there.
  2. Rainydayz - just another wrinkle to throw at you - Gastric Plication surgery is very similar to the sleeve, only from what I understand it involves "folding" the excess stomach within and stitching it up into a "tube" so the end result is similar to the sleeve. There is no cutting away of the excess stomach and is potentially reversible. It is becoming more and more common as I know my surgeon is now doing this procedure. It is also done laproscopically and there are no "adjustments" like the band. Just a thought. I am a bandster and I love it - but if I have problems, I'm not really sure I would have another put in (and potentially have the same problems - not work like it did before, etc) or revise to GPS.
  3. I'm 3 1/2 yrs post lapband. No soda is allowed with the lapband because it can cause band erosion or slippage. I occasionally will have a sip of hubbys soda if we're out to eat, but basically don't drink it anymore. My band is slipped now (thanks to my frequent vomiting) and I'm revising to a sleeve soon. From what I've been reading, they say no to soda because of discomfort. banders are sposed to have discomfort with soda too, but I have none. So is it medically ok to drink soda but it's up to the individual on whether it causes pain - or is it across the board a no-no? Just curious....

    Revision recovery

I didn't have a revision.... just gastric bypass. Most recommendations I saw were for 2-4 weeks off work. I chose to take 3 weeks off. It probably depends most on the type of job that you have... and perhaps on the post-op nutrition plan. 3 weeks was a good amount of time to take off except that my first day back at work was my first day transitioning to solid food. That was a struggle. Your doctor will likely support you in whatever time off works best for your circumstances. Share your preferences and thoughts with him/her.
  6. I'm about 12 lbs from goal (will revise goal when I get there- want to be a bit smaller). Nothing like some good before & after pics to remind you how you're doing. Feel free to share y'all oo.

    Revision Questions

I had the lap-band (2006) and revised to SIPS just six days ago. I’m down ten lbs and glad to have that awful band out of me. So far, I’m glad that I made the decision to revise. There are others on here that are much further out and have had wonderful success, but they put the work into it.

Help! I Don't Know What To Do!

My daughter had the band put in a year ago and did not have very good success. She has PCOS and a knee injury that prevents her from heavy aerobic exercise. We initially looked at the sleeve for both of us - her as a revision and my initial, but my insurance would not cover. Having talked to the surgeon and done my own research, the RNY is the best, most effective surgery for rapid weight loss. I, like you, was concerned about dumping and malabsorption, but seeing how successful RNY is for most people AND it is the most popular surgery, I'm glad it worked out the way it did. I know that for heaving patients, they like to do the band first, then after a significant weight loss, then they go in, remove the band and perform the RNY. Good luck to you. My suggestion, don't wait!
  9. No. Sleeves don't really stretch. The stretchy part, or fundus, was removed during surgery. It would take years of grossly overeating to the point of vomiting to actually stretch it enough to where you're eating significantly enough to cause weight gain. Can the sleeve relax and complete healing over time allowing more food to be eaten? Absolutely. That's why it's important for us not to just count on sleeve restriction and pay more attention to what we are eating for when that time comes. And to the OP: You can have 10 different weight loss surgeries, but the fact of the matter is if your head isn't in the game, NONE of them will work. Like Ann said, look inside and try to figure out what caused you to not succeed before, and then figure out the steps it will take to help you become successful whether you decide on revision surgery or give this one antother go. Your sleeve hasn't changed, it's just waiting for you to.

    Diabetes

None of the procedures really "cures" the diabetes, but they can knock it into remission; if you regain the weight, there is a good chance that the diabetes will follow it. When my wife and I started looking at WLS almost ten years ago, it was thought that the intestinal rerouting done in the RNY and DS was responsible for the metabolic changes that drove the diabetes into remission; since then, as the sleeve has become more popular as a stand alone procedure, it has been found that it, too, has a metabolic influence on diabetes and many leave the hospital without need of meds or insulin, so it isn't strictly a function of the weightloss as previously thought, and the remission rate for the sleeve is similar to that of the RNY, typically in the 80-85% range. If treating diabetes is ones' primary concern, then one should look seriously at the DS as well as that procedure has a diabetes remission rate of around 98%. This should not come as a surprise as the DS started as an intestinal rerouting procedure targeting diabetes to which the sleeve was added to make it a weight loss procedure as well. The DS is a longer and more technically challenging procedure for the surgeon which is why many don't offer it (but those that do tend to be from the top of the class, so those are guys who are well worth investigating no matter which procedure one chooses.) It will also usually be the more expensive procedure, but its also the most powerful in terms of weight loss and regain resistance. I was talking to a woman at our support group a few months ago who had an RNY 25 years ago and by all measures has been very successful with it, maintaining her normal weight range - up until just a few years ago when some of life's stresses brought back some of her long lose weight (not the 100+% regain we sometimes read of, but maybe 50-60%) and with it her long lost diabetes. Her weight is not overly excessive (at least these days in the western world!) but it is the diabetes that has her concerned, so she is pursuing a revision to the DS to knock it out. Deciding on what WLS procedure to pursue is not easy - for me starting as a relative lightweight with around 100lb to lose and reasonable dietary discipline developed over these past few years of working to avoid WLS (but no diabetes,) the VSG was the choice for me; for my wife with her diabetes and 200+ to lose, the DS was the better choice, and she still maintains after eight years that she could not have been successful with just the VSG (or the RNY.) A great presentation on the different characters of WLS procedures is here - http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/4416773/quotDoes-the-Patient-Fail-the-Procedure-or-Does-the/action,replies/topic_id,4416773/page,1/ I fully understand the cost concerns, and the interest in only going through this once. We self paid for my wife's DS and it was definitely the way to go for us. Some at a similar starting point can get by with the RNY or VSG, but it takes a somewhat different character to do so. In the close to ten years that I have been in this world (only the past 20 months or so on my VSG,) we have seen a few three time WLS patients - band revised to RNY revised to DS to get what they needed, so it is well worth the time to research the heck out of this to get the best fit for your needs. One final bit of perspective on my VSG and why the RNY was never a serious consideration for us (beyond the basic differences that are usually brought out in threads about the RNY vs. VSG like no NSAID use, possible dumping, and misc. nutritional issue after the RNY,) is that should the RNY fail us and needs revising to something else like the DS, that is a very complex revision for which only a very few surgeons (on the order of a half dozen in North America) are qualified to do, while the VSG is an integral part of the DS so a future revision is fairly straightforward should it be necessary. Good luck on something that is not an easy decision,
  11. I know that there are a lot of posts about surgeons in Mexico, and even about Dr. Aceves, however I'm hoping to get in contact with anyone who had their surgery with Dr. Aceves of Mexicali Bariatric within the past year, and to ask what your thoughts are about the experience. I was banded back in 2009 and am going for a band to sleeve revision. I have done lots of research and believe that Dr. Aceves is the way to go for surgery in Mexico. I'm about to go ahead and book my surgery and flights, etc. But, I would LOVE to hear from anyone who has gone down their more recently to see if the standards are still the same, how they felt, etc. Also, if there is anyone who had the band-to-sleeve revision with Dr. A, would particularly love to hear from you! Very excited and nervous, but mostly excited! :-)
  12. I am having a band to sleeve revision on July 7th in Tijuana with Dr. Ortiz. My preop diet started today (three weeks). I'd love to hear how you are doing.

    Band to Bypass Fears

Wow, its been a long time since I've logged into this site. I had Lap Band surgery in June of 2009, Lost close to 100lbs and was 15 pounds from goal. The band slipped so I had a revision done, and after that the band was never the same. I couldn't sleep at night the gerd was so painfull. My band was removed in 2011 and I instantly felt better. I've since gained almost all the weight back over the past 4 years and am now completely miserable! I signed up yesterday for an informational meeting at a new center closer to my home and hope that the process doesn't take too long as know that I've finally made up my mind that I want the bypass surgery I want it done as soon as possible! I so wish that I had gone with the bypass surgery to begin with!!

I belong to the Slipped Band club

I just had revision surgery a month ago too - fixed a hernia too - and removed the gall bladder. That was BRUTAL!! But, I am not doing any lifting yet -I was told to wait a little longer. Maybe because I just had a tummy tuck too with muscle restriction. I do however feel fantastic so far with no more reflux. I get filled on Thursday and will report back if there is a change. Some bad news though - gained some weight - maybe as much as 10 pounds!!! (afraid to look) Let me know what you find out :glare:

  18. DaisyBell I'm sorry u have to go thru that, that's not fair at all. You know how you call somewhere n one person tells u one thing n u call back back and the next person something else. I would ask for a supervisor, and ask for written document that says that when did it go into effect. Make sure u remember the dates you called or started the whole process. Also that's sucks about your friend, she already had wls just now a revision is needed. What insurance is that? Smh

    Bruising

I had minimal bruising after my revision, and the leak repair which all happened within 48 hours of each other. I have more scars because I was a revision patient. But, 8 months out, my scars are light pink, no biggie. No one sees me naked other than my husband so it really doesn't bother me. In my opion (and that's all it is), all of the temporary discomfort, bruising and healing time is just that temporary. In the long run, all that becomes an afterthought. At least that has been my experience.

    Travel soon after surgery

I'm new to this forum. I have had a band since 2009 and just got approved for revision to sleeve. My surgeon can schedule it as soon as December 22nd but I am traveling 12 days later to be a bridesmaid in a wedding. In your opinion, will that be too soon for travel? I've waited so long for this and now I'm so disappointed to have to postpone it. Thank you in advance for your input.

    Dr. Aceves, Mexicali, and Me!

Congratulations on getting your sleeve! I am interested in getting a band to sleeve revision and I am considering this surgeon. I really enjoyed hearing about your experience. When I got my band done here in PA, my surgeon checked on me once when I was out of it (according to my husband) and it took forever to get a nurse's attention. So it is wonderful to hear they are so attentive! I have a question for you about pain medicine after surgery. When I got my band done, I was able to control the pain level with a machine. I didn't have to wait for a nurse to give me that medicine. How did they administer pain meds to you? Was it self controlled, did you have to flag down a nurse, and if so, were you in a lot of pain waiting? I'm scared about that. Thanks!
  23. Had revision surgery almost two weeks ago and I am completely amazed at how easy it has been. Have walked quite a bit, came back to my business one week after and am so thankful everything has gone so well. I have had some troubles with the Proteins so now am shaking Greek yogurt with every kind of cream Soup I can find and heating it up. I finally decided the Protein chemical taste was making me slightly nauseous since I previously cooked and ate mostly fresh, not processed, foods.
  24. Hello My husband had the band put in mon 6/6/11, he passed the swallow test prior to being discharged from the hospital. I had to bring him to the ER that evening bc he wasn't keeping anything down. Then the next 3 days he had continuous vomiting, it was all foam and mucous. Then on friday the dr did a revision and it looked promising he was gonna be discharged the following day. Well he never made it home he is still in the hospital 1 week post band not able to even keep in saliva. He wants the band out ASAP. Anybody else experience this? and if so, how long did it last and what caused it.
