Who Are You?
2ndChanceHeth replied to illgeturhairdid's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello! My name is Heather. I'm 36, married to a teacher and have have two wonderful step sons - 17 and 14- who I love very much! I am a nurse in the Medical ICU and I love my job! Nursing was a second career for me so going back to school was the hardest thing i have ever done. I am so proud that i accomplished that goal! I love ALL THINGS CREATIVE! I am a big paper crafter, have started dabbling in photography, and hope to get back to some simple sewing projects I used to enjoy. I also love to cook and am a total foodie... I have been learning more about my relationship with food and am learning to appreciate one amazing bite instead of the whole plate of everything. We have two cats I'm totally obsessed with- a gray and brown tabby named Renegade and a marmelade named General Sterling Price;) My husband and I are both scheduled to be sleeved in two weeks on sept 30, 2013! I am a little anxious as my 17 yo and I are traveling for a couple days this week for college visits and Im so nervous about gaining when Im out of my routine- my final weigh in with doc is 6 days before surgery and I have been told in no uncertain terms if you gain, they will cancel (postpone?) your surgery! Yikes! We live in Western NY and are being sleeved by Dr. Aaron Hoffman. I was actually banded in 2010 and lost nearly 70lbs (pre and post op put together)... I experienced some rough times in my personal life and family and my new found healthy lifestyle went to hell. I had tried many times to get back in the saddle with little success. In March of this year my husband went to see Dr. Hoffman about bariatric surgery-- he recommended the sleee for my husband and told me he was doing band to sleeve revisions with tremendous success- so here we are! After reading many introductions (but not all of them yet), it sounds like there are so many interesting people on here and I look forward to learning more about you and your journey! -

My daughter was diagnosed with leukaemia the day I had been booked in to see the dietitian. She had been headachey for 4 days and was tired and pale. Took her to the doctors on Sunday lunchtime and Monday at 6am we got a phone-call from the pathologist saying she has leukaemia, you need to get to the Children's Hospital as soon as possible. OMG! What a horrible wake-up that was! So we somehow managed to survive peak hour travel into Melbourne (don't ask me how) and 2 hours later it was confirmed at the Children's that she did indeed have leukaemia. We were then told that they had to do a bone marrow extraction to find out which type of leukaemia she had. By then my husband had arrived at the hospital for support. Thank God for that. For the rest of the first day, she had blood transfusions and platelets transfusions and was taken to theatre the following morning for a lumbar puncture and bone marrow extraction. Results came back that night saying she had the most common type of leukaemia and her chances of beating it were 85%. Yippee. Well anyway, the long and short of it was my original surgery was put off for 2 years while she went through most of her chemo. And then the revision was done 1 month before she finished chemo completely. A very long and stressful road it was too! 2 1/2 years from diagnosis to end of chemo. And now we have a 5 year period where we wait and see if the treatment was successful. Her chances of beating it completely has risen to 90% And of course the finances are completely in the pits. Hence the job search. I just don't feel ready to go back to work but I have no choice. -
Hi Everyone, How did everyone's surgery go? I am scheduled for my revision surgery (from sleeve to GB) on July 25th. I deal with GERD and also have a hernia that will be repaired. I am excited and nervous all the same time. But i'm on a new journey in life, I've started a new job and this is just another step in my journey. I'm interested in hearing how my fellow July surgery buddies are doing. Thank you.

I had my revision sleeve done 7/3 and I’m in a stand still for weight loss right now. I haven’t lost a pound since I started the purée stage. Anyone else have the problem of a stall? Mine is a week now with no weight loss

Let's Collect Some Data!
ms.sss replied to ms.sss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
good suggestion. I can't modify my original post to request this info, so i'll look up each person's profile and input what it says the type of surgery they had. Not everyone fills this in, so we'll do with what info we have. Also, for those with revisions, only their latest surgery will be noted as it will start to get hairy if i have to cross-reference exactly WHEN they had thier revision... -

Dr. Ariel Ortiz at the OCC

I had gastric plication with Dr. Ortiz about a year ago. I felt very comfortable with the facility, staff, etc. But, afterwards I was still hungry--like all the time. My general doctor suggested I get a test (can't remember the name, but you swallow barium and they can see the stomach) to make sure my stomach hadn't opened. What it showed was that the stomach wasn't in the shape of a banana, but the top part was completely open and the stitches started from the middle down. That's why I was still feeling hunger. I send the CD of the images to Dr. Ortiz per his staff's instructions and heard absolutely nothing back. Nothing. Apparently they are great but you better hope there are no complications because you won't get any support. I ended up having a plication revision with Dr. Waldrep in Thousand Oaks, CA. He folded the top part that Dr. Ortiz left open and added another fold. And, there was constant support, including a call from Dr. Waldrep every couple of days to check on my progress. Even though revision surgery is usually more complicated, the cost was almost on par with Mexico, so I really wish I had just had the procedure with Dr. Waldrep to begin with. -

Hello all, So I found out today that I can't get on my husband's insurance without a qualifying event... so I am going self pay. Mexico looks like a good option, looking at Dr. Elias Ortiz and A Lighter Me. I have already found some threads on the topic, but wondering if anyone has had band to sleeve revision with Dr. Ortiz and what were your experiences, cost for the revision, etc. Thanks! Meredith -

I took a lock with me and locked those things in my suitcase while I was in surgery. You are given a private room. I went alone also & was a band to sleeve revision. I had no worries & felt completely safe. -

Hello again OCC Sleevers! I have NOT been able to speak to drs again, but through the grapevine it appears that the sleeve is the recommendation for lap band revisions. I am looking at a surgery date of either Monday of April 14 or 21.... Anyone from here having surgery those days? Also, this is a huge group of posts... Anyone remember which ones contain all the best pre-op info or where is the best place to get it? OCC sends a bit if limited info on the pre diet, but I know the forums are where the details are Thanks for support and replies to this post Rhonda -

Best news we discovered during this week's surgery is that dr. Ortiz no longer requires the drain for sleeve patients, UNLESS it is a revision. Neither of my daughters required a drain. Yeah! Their surgery was Monday; they were released to the hotel on Tuesday, and we returned to the OCC at noon on Weds for the barium swallow test. We asked if we could return to the states that afternoon and he said sure! So Omar, the OCC driver picked us up at 4:30 and we were back in San Diego by 6:00pm Weds night. We fly out today at 5:00pm. Can't believe how fast it went. -
I also did very little research on plication. The reason I chose not to is because I live in a fairly small town in Texas. I was afraid it was too new a procedure for my local surgeons to know about. They don't offer it and if I had an emergency post op and couldn't get back to Dr Ortiz, I was worried they would not know what to do. Also my regular dr does all my health needs and I didn't know if he would know enough about it either. But on the plus side of the coin, a girl I was picked up with at the airport had plication the same day I had sleeve revision, and she was released to go home a few days before me and she said she had no pain. But my pain was also minimal. I just took liquid Tylenol and it was enough.

My husband and I are both being sleeved (me - lap band revision) the 29th at OCC. Anyone else getting sleeved the same time and surgeon? -
Michelle, You are already on the right path to discovering alternative coping tools to manage stress. Running instead of eating is excellent. Other tools include the dialogue you are telling yourself, internally. In the field we call this self talk. You already know that eating is not going to help resolve this issue, so ask yourself how is my eating going to help my daughter? What can I realistically do assist my daughter? Why should I give myself a negative consequence for my jerk SIL? The more internal dialogue processing you do, it helps you to discover, identify, and revise your using food to cope with adverse family issues.

Anyone else indecisive?
RestlessMonkey replied to gtbadkitty's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
frauhowe, your post was really interesting to me. I realized something. At 53 (last year) my primary told me "Jeff, it's all about to go to hell for you. You've been "borderline" on lots of things for a while now, but unless you do something drastic, in 3 months you're going to be on diabetes and cholesterol medication. You are going downhill and as you age there is not a damn thing I can do about it, unless you lose some weight." Rather than depress me, it helped me decide that I wanted the lap band even if I paid for it out of pocket. That was the final straw for me. In 5-6 years, at 60, if I am thinner and still not a diabetic and still without heart trouble, then I will gladly have a revision surgery if I need it. I will probably be healthy enough to weather it, since I am losing with my band. I would never have initially had the courage to do a sleeve or bypass. Now, I am not so afraid. But for some of us, we have to have training wheels. I got the band thinking it was for life. I realize now that if it isn't, I can handle it. But what I couldn't handle was any more time at 405. For people who aren't on that ledge, as I was, the decision can be hard. I was always the "healthy" fat person, and it does catch up with you. -

I read a book recently; "Purpose Driven Life" by Rick warren, and I was amazed how he says things like "God knew what your DNA would be before he created the Heavens and the Earth in Genesis" (paraphrased though I used quotation marks). Where in the Bible did Reverend Warren find the word DNA? It amazes me how Theists revise their thinking because of science, while simultaneously refuting science. -

Over 400Lbs Gastric Sleeve Success Story
sleevedsilly replied to jasminem89's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello. I was 406 at first weighin. I was 375 at surgery three years ago. I went down to 285 and got pregnant before the honeymoon was over. I am currently 320 pounds. Sometimes I feel like a failure, because my personal goal was 180. However, most times I know that if I think really hard about it, my sleeve has been a tool that prevented me from dying. My eating habits are atrocious and I've broken a lot of rules but am still at 86 pound loss. When I work out my emotional sabatoge issues and get back on track my sleeve will still be here and for it I'm grateful. I was at a point presurgery where I broke chairs and couldn't tie my own shoes. Now I'm just fat. I've considered the possibility of bypass as a revision but I want to follow the rules and exercise and get back on track instead. My two complaints are that my hair has thinned out (I used to have very thick hair) and my teeth!! I have had two root canals after baby and my dentist says my teeth are demineralizing. Also, I'm freezing all the time but that's not so bad. I am not one of those amazing success stories you read about all over the internet but am still grateful. Most times no one cares about stories like mine and I think that's why some people disappear from forums like this. If you have any questions I would help to the best of my ability. -

I am also a band to sleeve revision on 6/10! So excited. I am not looking forward to the pre-op diet, but that is a small hurdle. I am in Cincinnati with Dr. Brad Watkins. -
I read this thread from start to finish over the course of two days. I am so impressed by you ladies. You have worked so incredibly hard and you are an inspiration. Thanks for being open and honest because I have found it so good to know that not everyone just drops to goal effortlessly. I am just beginning my journey but I have subscribed to this thread for inspiration. I promise not to post here until/unless I become a slow loser ( except for this one). I also read the regain article one of you posted a couple pages back. It talked about how some people need a revision from their first surgery to get to a healthy BMI. I am already trying to be open to that possibility. Have any of you considered a revision to get you there, if you have worked so hard for 2 or 3 years and are still having trouble? I know for me, I hope the sleeve works on its own, but I am trying to be open to the idea that I might need to revise it to DS if I eat pretty much perfectly for a couple years and still don't get there. I tried on my own to keep weight off for so long, and finally decided i need medical intervention. I suppose more medical intervention would not be the easy way out, just the same that getting the sleeve isn't the easy way out. What do y'all think about it?

We were banded 10 days apart. Hard to believe a whole year has gone by. In 1 yr I was banded, port revision and 2 knee replacements, I am done!!! If we don't see you, Happy Bandiversary Rockstar!

Hello everyone, I'm sorry I haven't set up a date for a support meeting. I've been going through heck with my band...reflux issues. Had a slight unfill in August...tried a fill the day before Thanksgiving and it was a no go. An Upper GI showed a slight slip/prolasps that needs revision surgery. I'm headed for revision surgery on 12/18/08. I hope we can get together for a meeting in Jan or Feb I'll keep you folks posted if you're interested. The meeting will be at my place in Taunton, MA. -
I went to Mexico for my band and then when I wanted a revision my doc is the only one I trusted for a revision since those surgeries are a lot more difficult to do and carry more risk. I'm completely sold on MX! I did go back to MX for my aftercare with a band because I'm driving distance but with my sleeve I have no aftercare or maintenance so it's a non issue now. But I could have had my aftercare with a band done locally.

Dr. Aceves banded me and then did a revision to a sleeve later. He's great! I would (and did) go back to him. Sleeves are fantastic, I love mine so far.
