Can I add sugar to my hot tea when I'm on clear liquids?
bitingcat replied to serenityjames81's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I like xylitol in my hot black tea - just enough for a little sweet. Not as no-carb as erythritol, but I prefer the flavor. Herb or iced, I'll usually just used stevia. My husband went keto recently for both himself and to support me as a new post-op. He used xylitol for a few weeks to help wean him off honey and recently has switched to stronger teas, unsweetened but with pastured heavy cream. As an aside, he's lost about as much weight as I have in the last 4 months. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Stalls-Please share your experiences
OutsideMatchInside replied to jilani's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Your questions are long and over thinking something that is pretty simple. Most long term successful people don't care about stalls and don't focus on them, so expect a lot of newbie responses that are going to be basically useless. My weight loss has gone in different stages. At first I lost every day or every other day. Besides the 3 week stall, no stalls until 5 months. I stall at significant numbers. My body is trying to defend it's set point, eventually as long as I keep doing the same thing, my body has to give up and lose. I was over 300 pounds for 18 years. When I got under 300 I stalled in the 290s gaining and losing for a month. Then boom huge weight loss and I was basically 275 in a couple weeks. Then at 250ish I stalled out and kept gaining and losing then I was 240. Same at 230. I was stuck at 220 for 2 months and I maybe it was over, then I lost 12 pounds in a week. Then I slowly lost 10 pounds over like 4 weeks. Now I am stuck at 199. I know it is a stupid pointless stall and I expect when it is over to wake up 195 or 194 or something one day. Because I am still shrinking. I lost like 5 inches totally off my upper torso in 2 weeks but stayed the same weight so I know the weight is coming off. Stalls for me, mean losing inches, lots of inches. I used to stress about them but by the 9 month mark I realized how they worked and I don't care that much any more. It is just an annoyance. Now I also stall a lot because I do not take any kind of hormonal birth control. I have a non hormonal IUD. For most of 2016, I have had a period every 2 to 3 weeks so those make up a lot of my stalls. Weighing myself everyday at the exact same time (wake up, urinate, weigh) has allowed me to better understand my weight fluctuations. At 16 almost 17 months, I don't care about stalls. If you want to properly track your loss measure every week and track it in a spreadsheet along with the scale. I am also a big fan of regular quarterly DEXA scans. I broke a stall this summer playing pokemon. I walked 20 miles in like a 48 hour time period and broke a stall. That was accidental not on purpose. When I got tired of being stuck at 220, I did a fat fast to drop weight. I eat Keto normally, and a fat fast is something people on keto do to break a stall. If I stay at 199 another week, I might try it again. The only reason I want to rush a drop is because I want to have plastics late summer, early fall and I need to get to a 30/31 bmi and hold it ASAP. -
You are literally telling my story, only difference is I've had my band 7 years. I try so hard to eat healthy but I break and just want to rid the hunger. I've started keto, it's helping some. High fat which means it's generally slider. But I can't eat the meats. Doreen 20 lbs in 2 months, but I can't wait to get this damn thing out. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

@@kari91 i feel like it's impossible to go back to my old habits. i cannot eat carbs comfortably and that was always my weakness so keeping it keto is super easy for me. i haven't even worked out in a month and i've lost like 4lbs becuz my diet is still good. now do i need to work out? yes. i need to get my ass moving but diet is 80%! you can do it! -
I'm currently shooting for between 70-90 grams myself. But I mix extra in with one of my morning soups so that I get a great big boost early on. My morning soup has 40 grams in it with extra scoop of protein added to it. My body thrives on protein though, since I was keto 18 months prior to surgery. I know we're all different.

When can I Keto - 2 weeks post no loss
magpie26 replied to Fallinfast's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@RickM everything is a fad it seems. I became interested in keto but I don't jump into things willy nilly. It took me over four years to finally decide on this surgery even though my mother had it almost 13 years ago. The gluten free craze is driving me nuts, but I'm a hypocrite because I've never been tested and I don't do gluten, but when I do eat gluten my arthritis in my hands and jaw KILL me, plus why eat bread or pasta when you only have 3 ounces to work with? I know there's gluten in everything, my sister in law has celiac's. I think people think ketosis is also easier than it is to achieve, it's harder that some may think. My goal or just way of eating is just high protein, little carbs and mainly only complex carbs, no gluten, very little sugar. Nothing processed anymore. I'm halfway to my bachelors degree, I've decided to switch my major to good science/nutrition which I took some of when I was "young" lol! Maybe I will finish before I'm 50. -
I have only lost 3 lbs in 2.5 weeks since surgery. I'm walking 4 miles a day since day 5 and eating 500-600 cals, 65 protein, 30 carbs, 30 fat a day. Can and or Should I add MCT to my premier protein 2x a day to get my cals at a normal level and to Ketosis? (I know MCT can cause stomach issues) I am worried I am hurting my metabolism with such low calories without the benefit of starvation ketosis which would boost my metabolism.

What diet did your Dietician/nutritionalist put you on to lose your pre-surgery weight? Shakes? Keto? You need to follow the plan they gave you.

Things that have been helping me Pre-Op
MasonMoonGirl replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes during my carb withdrawl is when I posted that depressed before surgery post lolll. Now I feel much better my fiance ate a burger with Bun in front of me at lunch and before that would have pissed me off to the max and now it didn't bother me haha. We are actually staying on the beach so our cottage has a refrigerator and kitchen I'm very happy I don't have to eat out and ruin my diet. I just made a meal plan for the week of my semi liquid diet I am a huge sauce person so I'm doing a keto lettuce crunchwrap Supreme (keto taco bell) for dinner and a big Mac salad. Going to measure my sauce so I don't go crazy I know it would be better without it but until I go full liquid I'll allow it it's still low carb since made with Mayo! -
Hey all, so I've been lurking for about a year, off and on and finally made an account once I received a surgery date. Backstory in a nutshell: This is not my first rodeo. Been on a bajillion diets and yo-yo'ed for too long. Had some success, some lasting years, but my Achilles heel is keeping it off. I like to exercise so mostly that part of the equation has not been a sticking point for me. I started my journey to WLS on Oct 2019. I wrapped up my insurance-required steps by April 2020 BUT initially had been doing so well on my own with losing that I thought perhaps I wouldn't even go the WLS route. Then covid happened and threw me off balance a bit, but I kept to my exercise and keto/low carb diet with success. Things went wonky in June when I broke my ankle and then again in December when I sprained that same ankle (grrrr). All my progress stalled while I healed and it didn't take much for me to gain nearly all my lost weight back in about 7 months. I asked my bariatric team to go ahead and submit my paperwork in November, I think. Processes were slow due to the virus, but I was shocked to get a pretty quick approval and surgery date for Dec 17. That was put on hold, but just this week I received a call that elective surgeries were being scheduled again. I have pre-op visits on Jan 22 with the anesthesiologist and surgeon. I am not sure if I'll have to do a pre-op diet. Guess the surgeon will tell me Friday! I'm pretty excited and trying not to be too nervous about the days ahead. I'm married and have two kids (ages 18 & 20). My username is kind of a private joke. No matter how heavy I am, I've always thought I had nice ankles. 😄 So anyway...Hi! 😊

WLS Veteran is back and looking for support
reallyrosie replied to Barb Being Barb's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
i resemble your experiences, barb. i was sleeved dec 2011. lowest wt was 188. starting 425. kept wt around 190 til recently: fractured knees, ankle, severe arthritis, torn tendons, rotator cuffs shot, and now, heart disease. (huffpuff) wt is 209. in caridio rehab but very unstable moving actually afraid to move sometimes. am really isolated, lost most support people from 'natural causes' over the years...still trying to cling to Keto. never went back to simple carbs. wish u the best. oh, i was 67 when i had my surgery...that doesnt help. i know we cant do it til we are ready...but waiting too long is a luxury we cant afford. -
I was sleeved 7/4/17, so I am a little over a year out. I was sleeved in Mx, so I haven't seen my bariatric team since my surgery (as far as post op checkups, etc.) . My weight loss has slowed down quite a bit and I have been between 173-178 for the past few months (30 years old, 5'8 and trying my best to exercise 3-5 times a week). I was hoping that some people who were about a year out could tell me how they are doing and what their approx. macros are. I have been trying to follow bariatric keto for a few months...but it really doesn't seem to be a good fit for me. I had the ketone strips and joined a special "bariatric keto" group on Facebook and they provided me with macros, but according to the strips I never got into ketosis Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated. I know I have come so far and made great progress, but I would like to continue this journey and get to a "normal" BMI before adding on to our family. Currently, I'm eating anywhere between 1,000 - 1,200 calories a day. Protein : 60-80 g Carbs: 0-50g (total, not net) Most days typically under 25g Fat: 25-65g Water: 80-100oz

2 Years Post OP and struggling
Nayro827 replied to Nayro827's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you Steve! I think you're right. I know what I have to do, I just need to get my a$$ in gear and do it. I'm going to try the pouch reset thing first to get my head back in that mindset and then move onto keto from there. Good luck on your journey! It seems like you're already doing great!! -
Trying to get out of my head....
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm looking into therapists. Not sure if it's a food issue or a trauma issue since I had a horrific childhood. My surgeon's office said not to worry about calories, also. They said to do 60-80g of protein, less than 50 carbs per day, and less than 50 fats per day. I'm more obsessive with the labels now than I was when I was on keto. It's also frustrating because in the 9 months I was on keto, I lost 100 pounds with only 1 short stall about 3 months in. It was so much easier to lose the weight back then than it is now. I'm fighting tooth and nail for every pound and hitting stall after stall. I worked out then and I work out now. But since it's such a struggle now, I'm finding I get panicky and start REALLY restricting what I eat. I've upped my work outs in both length and intensity, I religiously watch the labels and count every carb and fat in everything that goes in my mouth, and I not only don't eat junk but I don't think I even eat enough PERIOD. Yet here I am, day 4 of the same weight again. No matter what I do, I lose 5-7 pounds, then sit at a weight for a week, then lose 3 or 4, then sit another week, then lose 2 or 3 and the sit again. I have no issue with doing the work, but somehow I thought it would come a bit easier with only 20% of my stomach. It's harder to lose weight now than it was before the surgery!!!! Just freaks me out and my mind goes to not so good places. -
No - I followed a very strict no-fad-diet regimen (and still do) so I concentrated on developing/maintaining healthy and sustainable dietary habits for the long term rather than short term miracle diets that fail after a few months. Skipping major food groups and the nutrition that they provide doesn't do it. Besides, keto wasn't a "thing" when I got started. While losing, I just concentrated on getting my requisite protein, and then getting the best nutritional bang for the buck with the remaining calories in my allotment, be it from fats, carbohydrates or whatever.

Does anyone follow a specific diet?
OutsideMatchInside replied to loulou12's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My way of eating is keto. -
I was recently told to up my calories to 800 to 1000 per day, and I tend to hang out on the low end, but on the rare occasion that I hit near 1000, I see a loss. Since my loss has slowed down/stalled, it has me wondering if I should be hitting closer to 1000 on a more regular basis. But the problem is that I'm usually satisfied with my 800 calories per day, and with that I can get up to 90 grams of protein and keep the carbs low (under 50, often close to 20). And I like that. I don't want to add more protein to my diet because if I do I will probably never poop again. Constipation is still a bit of a struggle for me, and I want to stay low carb (but not necessarily keto-low, that is not a personal goal for me). So how can I increase my calories without adding a bunch more protein or carbs, but also not adding a bunch of crappy food? I'm at a loss. I've added a couple tablespoons of peanut butter, but that's about all I've come up with, and even that makes me feel like it's just a bunch of sugar, although the nutrition information doesn't seem to indicate that.

My wife and I also had surgery at the end of last year. What we tend to do is not keep things in the house that would take us off plan too far. Even with cookies or chips, we tend to go more for the protein chips or keto cookies (Highkey cookies are really good) to try to have a slightly healthier option. We also tend to purchase low/no sugar chocolate and only eat a small amount when we do. I also tend to have healthier dessert yogurt "Dannon light and fit" and low sugar protein bars such as fitcrunch bars that are delicious but fairly close to plan. By doing this I am still able to have a treat but not over indulge. The closer to plan I can keep my treats, the better the long term results I feel will happen.

Hi Julie! I'm still around too...I am 6 yrs post VSG. Wow, how the time has passed. Initially I had the typical loss of the 'surgery doing the work' and felt great. Followed the rules to a T. But about 18 months post op I made major changes in my life, left a long-time career, moved, went to grad school, took a night position, etc. I started slipping little by little and although it wasn't too bad initially, as time went on I started having regain. Then I lost a parent, graduated grad school, went back AGAIN for a Doctorate, changed jobs again, etc. Finally about 2.75 yrs post op I got some super sobering health news (a condition that my surgery had corrected was back) and had to get real with myself. I had to seriously have a 'come to Jesus' moment with myself and realized the TOOL was still there. I went strict Keto and never looked back. I now have successfully lost my regain, am back where I was at my lowest post op, and am working to maybe drop another 20. No, I can't and probably never will again, eat what I really want to. I'm ok with that. My health condition is hopefully under control. I feel good. I have remained on track. I consider myself a bariatric success and I know a LOT of folks who weren't as fortunate.

For everyone that is concerned about being a slow loser, don't give up hope! If you have slipped up and are struggling just keep trying to do better. I thought it would take the full 2 years to get 100 pounds off, but I think I might reach my goal by 8-10 months post op. My weight loss in the beginning was so slow. Like, it took months to lose the first 30 pounds. I stuck through it and have been trying to stay in keto as much as possible. Yes, I'm human, I've made mistakes but I recovered quickly. This last couple of weeks the weight loss has really kicked in! I'm losing so fast, it's like my body finally woke up. I've already lost 19 pounds this month, 19 pounds!! I can't believe this is me now. Just hang in there! If I can do it with PCOS, Lupus, and hypothyroidism you can do it!! Don't give up no matter how slow it is coming off. PS. I would post pics but I don't trust people. [emoji13]

Weight Loss Stagnation 10 Months Post-Op
Paul.VDH replied to Paul.VDH's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@ms.sss My GP wasn't sure, but based on my diet and weight issues, she figured that had to be the case. What little I did find about it mentioned that it's not unheard of in people who are of Belgian/Irish descent. Both locations are prone to famines, so what was a life saving trait is now a malignant one in their descendants. I've never found a name for it when looking either. I'm going to try Keto again for a week or two and see how I feel. My doc recommended it as a way to restart my weight loss, so we'll see how that goes. I really appreciate your input! -
I'm 4 months out too and hit stalls a few times. In the beginning I believe it was due to not enough protein an possibly not enough calories. But once I corrected that and made an effort to increase both, my weight started moving again. However, I hit my lowest weight of 253.4 lbs on Aug 28th and since then I have stalled and not lost anything more. In fact I have been seeing 255, 256, 257 on the scale since then. Nothing has changed diet wise so I'm not sure why (but I'm also due my period in 8-12 days so maybe that's why?). But like others say, it's normal to stall along the way. Anywho, my normal diet usually consists of...... Breakfast: 1 egg scrambled with some shredded cheddar cheese. Sometimes with some salsa, spicy guacamole, or mushrooms and/or onions, etc. I also usually have 1 or two turkey sausage patties but not always. Once in a while I will even make a sausage, egg and cheese on a whole wheat English Muffin but can ever only eat about half or a little more that half. Lunch: A scoop of tuna (made with light mayo) with 6 whole wheat Saltines and a few cubes of cheese. Or sometimes a sandwich (on Aldi Keto Bread: zero net carbs and 50 cal) with turkey lunchmeat and cheese (again, I can never eat a whole sandwich). Or sometimes just the meat and cheese by itself. Dinner: Usually chicken (baked in some way or another) and I always try and add a scoop of veggies but once I eat my protein I'm usually not able to fit the veggies. I also try and add brown rice once in a while or black/kidney/northern/etc. beans but usually never eat more than a few forks full. Other proteins I eat for dinner are salmon, shrimp, tilapia, flounder, etc. I also use the various tortilla's from https://mrtortilla.com/ and make all sorts of tacos or quesadillas. Each tortilla is 1 carb and 15 calories!! We LOVE them!! Oh and I also make chicken wings with various seasonings in my air fryer. Homemade chicken nuggets too. I don't usually snack during the day or evening but once in a while I will have an extra thing during the day like some light Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese alone or with something like cut up cantaloupe. I do TRY and have fruit most days too, like an apple or Halo, etc.

I am thankful for you all- but I need help
mi75 replied to mi75's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm relying on a bariatric-keto type approach. I know that drinking purely shakes at over 3 years post op won't really do much for me, so I'm dropping carbs below 30 or so a day. But i'm also going to keep my old bariatric favorites on hand, like Quest bars, some protein powders (if a shake is necessary i'll probably have them with water or a 'lite' sugar free juice). Also going to take some of my most favorite bariatric recipes and cook all day today. Hubs is hopping on board too, he lost almost 40 lbs initially when I had my surgery- just from the change in my cooking. he gained that all back and feels terrible physically from the added weight. Having already prepared food on hand is key for us, which is guess is PLANNING for the most part. without the food prepared and in the fridge, we will both hit the cafeterias at work and pick bad choices.
