August post op sleevers: Check in
Akafij replied to motherof5's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi all. I was a band to sleeve revision on the 19th. The first week was rough, not a lot of pain, but I was sent home with oxygen and was soooo tired. I also had a drain and that was nasty. 1 week post op I had the drain removed and started feeling normal again. I was also allowed soft foods. I'm doing well, getting all of my protein in but still struggling with my water. I've lost 13 pounds, not much but I'm ok with that. I did have a couple of cheats, 1/2 a cupcake and another time a crust of bread. No stomach problems with either but the cupcake about put me in a diabetic coma! Won't do that again. -
Lap band to sleeve revision in 2 surgeries?!
southernbanded replied to Pinkgirl1234's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
HI there, My doctor just removed my band three weeks ago and will do the second surgery for the sleeve in October. I just completed a 6 month prep program for the sleeve that was required for my sleeve surgery by my insurance company. I had my Fluid removed in March and the band removed on July 29th. Per my doctor the reason for the two surgeries is due to letting the stomach go back to a normal size, this way when they do make the cut for the sleeve, they get a better shaped pouch, which in the long run makes a difference in the success of your weight loss. if they did the surgery all in one, the stomach would be misshaped. When you think about it, it does make sense. They have seen better results with the sleeve revisions when the surgeries are done in two steps. If it causes me to have better success, then I am for it. Since March when the fluid was removed I have gained almost 45 pounds back. It is very disheartening, as I have tried everything and have been watching my Protein and calorie intake and still gaining, I feel like there is nothing I can do to stop it. I know this weight gain is only temporary and look forward to starting my life with the sleeve. Having patience is hard, but will be worth it. -

Am having the lap band removed on April 17th and hopefully the sleeve done at the same time. Has anyone here had the lapband removed and have had to wait for a few months before having the revision to the sleeve? How many have had the sleeve performed at the same time as the lapband removal? Thank you.

4 days post op and what a journey!
No yum yums posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello All, I'm 4 days post op and what a journey! I had a band for 12 years which eroded and had to be urgently removed. My band did its job, but I gained lots of weight after removal. So, a revision to bypass was my option. I can tell you I was a complicated case due to adhesions and the discovery of 2 hernias. My poor wittle belly! I just wanted to add it will be great getting out of my fat suit and into my skinny suit again. All this pain is worth the long term result of being healthy! I love hearing others stories. It's a great way to support each other. Thank you. It's nice to know I'm not alone on this journey. -
MINI GASTRIC BYPASS AND ACID REFLUX
UnderTheCaliSun replied to NYCGAL000's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
Wow! I had no idea one could have a Nissen after an MGB. I had a Nissen and they took it down to do my MGB. I haven't really had any issues since but I've prepared myself for the potential of bile reflux. I thought a revision to full gastric bypass was the only option. I'm glad to hear this. I didn't know a Nissen would be effective for bile reflux since it creates tension at the esophagus and bile needs to be stopped before it enters the stomach. Thank you for the info. Can you share which doctor did it? -
For those with BMI 35-40?

Wanna hear something sad? I KNOW I am on the cusp so I GAINED 5# just to be above 35! I have a family history of heart disease, high cholestoral and triglycerides, asthma and even when I exercise like a freak? The weight won't budge. I quit exercising I was so discouraged. I am not round and roly poly...I am solidly built and very active. I told my friend who is 5'2" and 275 and she went freaky on me. "Come on Shira, we can do this together!" She MEANT dieting. I don't want to diet anymore. I hate it. I want to just live my life and not have food be a ruling factor. I eat VERY heathily...and that's what I want to do. I don't want gimmicks anymore. I have been dieting for the last 30 YEARS! I told my Dad who has had GB and he was REALLY excited. He thinks it's the best thing since Wayne Newton!! He actually wants a revision TO the lapband since his GB has stopped working. He sent me an article from the Washington Post about it yesterday in fact. If my insurance won't pay (although I think that won't be an issue), he is offering to cover it. He really is a supporter. Now my BF? She dropped 50 lbs last year through diet and exercise. And I really applaud her. I am not sure if she'd be supportive of this or not and right now I haven't told her. Another friend I DID tell. And now she may be interested too. I guess it's just random. I go to the seminar on the 5th - this Wednesday!!!!! I am psyched. I am hoping my PCP won't object. I also learned what a panniculus is (look THAT one up) and found out I can get MINE removed. If so, I'd like to do them both together...I think that would so increase my self-confidence, my body image and my general health. I am really hopeful nothing FUBARs this. -

Speak up those with leaks & infections!
BJean replied to Can.sleeved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Stacey! The last time I wore a Petite size 8 I weighed about 118. And looks like that's within the range you mentioned for a person my height. I have a smallish frame - not big boned. But my muscle mass is lacking, I'm sure. Really have to work on that. I just noticed that I weigh about what you do now and I'm 5 inches shorter than you. So that sure tells me something. Are you a revision from the band? You're getting sleeved 7 days before me. I'm getting excited and you must really be feeling that way too. Is your doctor stateside or south of the border? Mine's local. Good luck with your surgery! I hope you'll feel like checking in after a couple of days so we can know how you're doing. I'm excited for you. -

I am not going to get caught up in all this political mess. I will say this, I would love to personally sue a certain someone for telling me false things about Jerusaleum Clinic. To scare me to death about my daughters health just so you thought I would change my surgery to the doctor you are now working for....shame on you! That being said, my story goes like this.........In Feb. of 2009, my daughter and I both had lap band surgery by Dr. Almanza. No problems.......In Jan. 2010 daughter was revised and I had to have my band removed because of errosion. April 2010 (just last week) my husband and I had a sleeve. All these procedures were done by Almanza. I find him and his clinic to be both professional. We have never had an infection or complications. I thank my stars everyday that there is a healthy option to obesity surgery for those of us that do not have insurance coverage. I know how hard it is doing the research...please don't listen to all this garbage about Almanza........I think he is great. Surgery sleeve Dr. Almanza April 14, 2010 -

My two cents on the Shirley issue, she was a band to sleeve revision and had her sleeve done by Dr Pompa long before she was the main US coordinator for Betancourt/Dr.Almanza. Also she was definitely NOT fired. She QUIT! This is NOT hearsay from my part for sure! -
Scar Tissue With The Band?! :(
morthnaprtyfac1 replied to alwayseating2012's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I work at the hospital where I had my surgery and all of the surgeons here do the revision in 1 surgery. I had it done last month. No complication and no scar tissue issues. -
TammygRN it's been rough for me too and I'm still regretting my decision. I came home with a PICC line as a precaution for leaks. I had lap band to VSG revision and the scar tissue was so bad that my surgeon couldn't even see my band when he got in there. He also mentioned that there was also scar tissue underneath where the band was wrapped around my stomach. All I can do is hope and pray that everything will strengthen in the 3 weeks that I will be receiving TPN and I won't have any additional complications. I'm a very nervous/anxious sleever right now. My first 2-3 days were really rough. I'm finally starting to feel more like myself. I hope you are doing better. Hopefully we will both eventually come to love our sleeves.

seeking opinions/first appt nov 4th
feelinggood replied to britt2415's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As with any of the weight loss surgeries, complications can and do happen. I agree with the others that you should take as much time as you need to research all of them and make an informed decision. Have questions prepared for your appointment and if you are not comfortable with the answers or the surgeon get a second opinion. The band is not an easy road by any means. Your head has to be in the right place and you must follow the band guidelines you will get from your surgeon. If you have any doubts, ask questions! I lost 100 lbs and made my goal in 8/9 months and am very happy with the results, however, I am one of the small percentage of people who had complications. Just 10 days ago, I had revision surgery to another band because my original slipped up onto my esophagus and had major scarring. I will tell you though that I was banded in Mexico with the old 4cc band, which is notorious for this very type of problem. The reason I am telling you this is not to scare you but to stress the importance of letting your doctor know if you sense anything at all doesn't seem right with your band. Good luck to you! -
Old habits rearing their ugly head again! YIKES!
bigloser2014 replied to bigloser2014's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you all for great suggestions, reminders and a few firm kicks in the butt. Much needed! I am so glad to be a part of this wonderful support group! Combining all the suggestions and applying my logical Project Manager mind to it, I jotted down the sequence of events that led to this sudden onset of insanity. I just came back from, staying away from home for 4 weeks, 2 big family weddings and said no to almost ALL the food while I was there. I am proud of that! Being human, I think I had said "No" enough times in the last few weeks. My brain was rebelling! A few weeks outside my environment with EVERYONE pushing rich, yummy food at me was not easy! And I could not get my exercise. Exercise and the resulting soreness keeps me motivated and happy. Slipping into old habits is easy when the guard is down. I guess I was tired of saying NO! So, last evening, I gave myself this pep talk in front of the mirror (felt a little silly but how cares?) Pep talk begin: In the last week, I started to slip a little. Started testing the waters. NOT GOOD!! I over-indulge, weigh myself daily and find out that I had not gained. So, what do I do? Keep repeating the behavior thinking I am invincible! Until the weight gain actually occurs? Who am I kidding? I know it will come and come quickly, without the warning. The habits will be back before I can say “habit”. I cannot go back to thinking that I can fix it without taking drastic action! I WILL NOT be able to just stop eating!! When has that ever worked in the past? Create a plan. Revise it! Pep talk end. So, I created a plan. Organized the house. Threw away the Snacks. Passed a hard test: A boy from the neighborhood brought a cheesecake my husband had ordered from him while I was out. I threw it in the back of the freezer right away! I went to the gym this morning. I tried on my size 6 clothes and let myself feel the wonderful feeling. I drank 120 oz of Water and am chugging away today! I looked at my before and after pictures and I tried to remember all the wonderful compliments and attention I got at the weddings! Here is what I learnt from this small slip up: - I will not be cured! I am an addict and always need to have a plan. - Desperate times call for desperate measures! Get help quickly! Do not think you can do it by having the same thinking that you had before the surgery. Your tummy was cut, not your brain! It stills thinks the same way! - I did not have this big surgery to fail. I will adjust my habits and create as many plans I have to and be successful! For those here that posted about going through the same thing, create a list of things you can make better today and then act on it. DON'T WAIT! Thank you all! -

Surgery in September
superslim replied to Jenaenae84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your going for a bypass right?, this is my 3rd surgery, first was gastric band and achieved goal weight, but after a few years had problems so I went for a revision to a gastric sleeve, felt hunger from start, almost back to starting weight now, so now mini gastric bypass scheduled In October, I wish someone had told me from the beginning, goodluck -
@@betrthnever It looks like you are considering a revision from Lap-Band to RNY. Is that correct? If so, why? I ask because you say you are on the fence, and I am assuming you mean you are on the fence about getting the revision to RNY.

Gastric bypass 2008
OutsideMatchInside replied to prettybutterfly's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
Some Drs in Mexico will bypass more of your intestine, and some will tighten your pouch. You are better off just eating dense protein than risking another surgery when you probably have scar tissue from the last one. Look at this Lady's YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_ZLTY6f9v_YrH7FqVUn7Mw You can't really revise from RNY, not safely anyway. RNY is a one shot thing. This lady has revised and tried to revise with nothing but problems. She always talks about revisions but doesn't focus much on food, well not as much as she should have. -
Weight loss expectations VSG to RNY??
lizonaplane replied to mi75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The weight loss for revision varies a lot, but in general is significantly less than with your initial surgery. If you're doing it for GERD, it makes sense, but for weight loss, it makes more sense to look at other weight loss strategies like medications and counting calories/behavior change -
Weight loss expectations VSG to RNY??

I was revised January 2021, and 1 year out I had lost 105 lbs. Revision weight was 295, high weight (pre-sleeve) 365. I am currently 195. I just finished treatment for uterine/ovarian cancer and oncologist told me to not actively try to lose weight, but I have lost over 30 pounds since the diagnosis. -
Weight loss expectations VSG to RNY??
mi75 replied to mi75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
yes planning on it. see my GI doc in a week. I haven't seen my original surgeon in 7 years- I had to switch to another clinic because of insurance purposes and will discuss with my GI doc which surgeon would be better for the revision (now that i've switched to a BCBS plan they both take).... GERD is still terrible. -

We live in a parallel universe! I haven't been in a restaurant in over a year because I hate that sudden need to run for the bathroom. I'm getting a revision on 5/4 and I'm excited to live life without throwing up. I'm scared too but I think we will be fine. -
WHy am I so scared of a bypass?
James Marusek replied to marfar7's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had RNY gastric bypass surgery over 4 years ago. I did this primarily for many health issues that were creeping up on me including high blood pressure, diabetes, GERD and sleep apnea. These conditions went into remission within a few weeks after surgery. One of the reasons why I choose RNY was because I had severe acid reflux. One of the individuals in our bariatric surgery support group meeting had the band but after several years, the band started to erode into his stomach and it became a life threatening condition. So he had it removed and replaced with gastric bypass. He was pleased with he results. The only thing in his case was that the band had created a lot of scar tissue and when they revised him to RNY his pouch was a little smaller than most. Therefore he adjusted by having smaller meals but increased the number of meals to compensate. As far as taking vitamins for the rest of my life, that was a concern prior to surgery. But I am off all 4 prescription meds that I was taking prior to surgery. The cost of all my vitamins is cheaper than all my prescription meds. The only inconvenience is the time spacing. I tried B12 shots for a few months but I had my wife administer them to me in the arm. I noticed that she turned her head away just before she put the needle in my arm. She is afraid of blood. Therefore I stopped doing this and went with sublingual B12 daily. These tablets actually taste good and are enjoyable to take.
