I'm Scared of My Pre-Op Diet
Italiancurves replied to Kyrie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok so most doctors recommend 60-90 grams of protein. Your shake had better have at least 30 gr. and you'll be eating alot of yogurt (dannon lite n fit Greek yogurt /x the protein) or you could do one ISOPURE clear liquid protein -40 grams of pro per bottle. It's filling satisfying and you'd have your recommended protein to keep u healthy strong and within your doctors guidelines. U wouldn't even have to do much yogurt if any, if u drink an ISOPURE. Tastes kinda like Gatorade. Available at GNC or online at ISOPURE or GNC. I personally would limit the fruit juice, the calories add up fast unless u do V8. Splash lite which is 1/2 the cals of reg juice. When do u start your pre op diet? I'm halfway thru mine. -
I tried one, it was whey protein but the flavor was apple and I hated it! I also cant stand milk, but only cows milk. I make my shakes out of vanilla and coconut almond milk and mix a lil yogurt in and its pretty good.

Part of me agrees with Susanne, but I must add that nobody knows what this is all about until it is over and done with. Everybody just wants to know what's it going to be like? The protein shakes ARE AWFUL. Stomach them as much as you can...let me tell you this recipe, it's the one I lived on bc it was the only one I couldn't taste the protein: 8 oz milk, 6 ice cubes, 1 scoop choc protein powder, 2 TBS Natural Peanut Butter. Blend up and drink. It's pretty good and it's the ONLY protein drink I'd drink. Just know that the protein drinks are only NECESSARY for the first month or so. When you move to real food you can eat protein bars and they are much better. I do have a feeling there is more to this story, though, than just drinking protein drinks. Just know that you WILL NOT be eating ever again like you do now. If you can't get beyond that, you may not be ready. It was something I was doubting, too, but I was MORE tired of being fat and unhealthy. I'm 4 weeks out and living on cheese, soft meats, and yogurt. I had a spell over the weekend that I ate carbs and it's over. I don't want to be fat any longer and I really found out I didn't miss the carbs, afterall. I ate them and it did nothing for me. Amazing coming from a carb addict. Search your soul and figure what you really want and be content with that decision.

Hello Everyone:) I'm new here! and I am in need of a support system. I had gastric sleeve surgery on 1/29/2018, which makes me 7 weeks post op! it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. My surgery went very well, I was back to work in 2 weeks. I'm a Finance Manager so I mostly sit at my desk all day. Now, let me take you through the good and the bad that I went through. Constipation after the surgery was horrible until I was introduced to Miralax! It's awesome...tasteless, odorless and you can add it to any beverage. I added it to unsweetened ice tea and water and it did the trick. My incisions healed fast except for the one in my belly button. It was a uncomfortable but tolerable for awhile until the pain stopped altogether. For the first 4 to 6 weeks, I tried to follow the diet but some days it was just too much! I had a hard time getting my protein shakes in after the surgery. Everything tastes different, it's kind of weird. I don't like eggs anymore and the smell of meat cooking makes me so nauseous! Before surgery I was a steak lover! now just the thought of steak makes my stomach hurt! So what am I eating when I do eat?? LOL:) My day pretty much goes like this, When I wake up the first thing I do is take all of my vitamins, Breakfast is 1 halo (clementines) and a yogurt, Lunch would be apple slices and cheese or chicken soup with 5 oyster crackers, Dinner.....honestly it varies because sometimes I'm not craving anything but if I am I'll eat a piece of fruit, or a grilled/baked chicken breast (skinless/boneless) and a cup of veggies. I never finish it all...after 5 bites I'm done! At this point, shrimps and fish are my favorite. In the beginning I was really depressed because of head hunger!!! It drove me nuts! I would crave something but as soon as I take a few bites I'm done! Then I would depressed because my mind wants to eat all of it but my tummy can't accept it! Once I thought about it, it was easier to move on. Why in the hell would I go back to same old habits that blew me up to 345lbs??? I didn't get surgery for nothing! so now, I absolutely love my sleeve because no matter how bad I crave something after a few bites, I'm done! As for exercise, I work out 3-5 times a week, most of my weight is on my lower body so I stay on the treadmill, bike, leg press (125 pounds) and the elliptical machine and also 5lb free weights. My oldest son is built like a freakin power ranger (obviously, he has his Dad's genes thank God!! But he's an excellent trainer and doesn't allow me to slack off. I would recommend gastric sleeve surgery to anyone who is serious about changing their life for the better. The surgery is only a tool, you have to be motivated and focused for it to beneficial for you. Every week the number on the scale goes down and that's all the motivation I needed! Don't be scared! Just do it! If you keep procrastinating, you're just delaying living your life to the fullest and being happy! and remember NO PAIN, NO GAIN! You have to go through something in order to get something!

Oh, hummus sounds amazing. My doctor gave me a list of food I'm allowed to eat for each stage post- surgery for the first year. Hummus isn't on the list. The handful of foods that are on the list for my first week of food are mostly yogurt and cottage cheese. Some plain beans the week after. No meat for over a month. 😭 I'm with you, I miss chicken so bad...

Am i doing wrong or is it normal?
glitter eyes replied to jaysmm's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had pain eating and drinking post op and what worked for me was using toddler spoons and taking super tiny bites even if it was something as soft as yogurt. I also drank from a medicine cup the first few weeks and made each little cup last three tiny sips. Eating and drinking that small amounts and that slow got rid of my discomfort. If it makes you feel better it goes away for most of us. I am two years post op and can eat normal bites and eat at a normal speed. Hang in there and congrats on your surgery. The first weeks are rough. -
Having trouble getting in enough calories.

Yea I will ask. Usually my first snack is a protein shake and the other is greek yogurt or another protein shake. -
The Soft Solids Effect
Bufflehead replied to almosthome's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
honestly I would not waste stomach space on things like potatoes at this point. Maybe try a tiny bite of something high protein and soft, like refried beans, tofu, Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese. -
This question is for pre and post op- do fresh/frozen fruit with a low fat yogurt smoothie and protein powder count as a protein "shake"?

I have to tell you, there was no way I could last on the pre op diet of shakes either that we had, I spoke with the nutritionist for my doc and we agreed that I would follow the cals for the day but could do it with real food instead since I didn't like to eat a bunch of chemicals anyway plus knowing that just drinking would so not fill me up, so a typical day had oatmeal (plain) raspberries, best life yogurt with kashi, apples and string cheese and lean cusines. Our limit was 775cals, I did more like 1100 a day, lost 15lbs pre op and also walked to ensure the loss. Good luck, maybe consider the idea of real food instead of shakes, just get through this short while before surgery and you'll be ok.

I like the Cytosport from Costco. Started with the vanilla (which is very sweet). Bought some chocolate after week 1 and it was much better. Tricks that have made it better. Sugar free flavorings, I like peppermint with the chocolate. Nonfat greek yogurt adds a lot of protein and cuts down on the sweetness. Last but not least, PB2 powder is a peanut butter powder (ordered on Amazon) that has the oil (fat) removed reducing the fat content significantly. You get some added protein from that as well.

March 7th Sleeved - High Protein Liquid diet ideas
acummins73 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello every one, I had my surgery on March 7th and I'm looking for some recipe ideas for my high protein liquid diet. I was on clear liquids for a week after my surgery and then moved to the high protein liquid diet and will be on that until April 11th. I found out that my stomach can no longer tolerate milk at this point so I'm left with broth, veggie and bean soups (pureed) and mashed sweet potatos. I can also do oatmeal and cream of wheat. Yogurt and pudding upset my stomach due to the dairy. Just looking for any ideas. I have a couple more weeks left on this diet and I'm kind of getting tired of drinking Unjury chicken broth protein shakes all of the time. Thanks. -

The Soft Solids Effect
moonlitestarbrite replied to almosthome's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
veggies, even cooked veggies, can be tough to digest. try things that are easier... cottage cheese, yogurt, soft cooked eggs. even just drink milk. fyi, at 13 months post op i cant eat 5 ounces protein! 2-3 at most. -
THE LIQUID DIET COMPLAINING/SUPPORT LOUNGE
Jz0917 replied to V.V.V.'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I start tomorrow. I am using shakeology shakes, unjury unflavored powder, cream of chicken soup, decaf coffee, and broth and yogurt during my liquid fast. I can also have sugar free popcicles and sugar fee pudding and jello. I hope I'm ready. I did a 21 day Daniel fast prior to this so I have been cleansed out in a sense. Prayer will definitely be required to get me through, especially with 6 kids ( includes two sets of twins) at home. -
Update: day 2 I had the leak test and was in tears by the end because of the feeling of the liquid hitting my new pouch. Since I passed the test, they started me on Clear liquids and took my iv fluids bag off. I've been walking a ton. Mat least 10-15 laps around the floor 7-8 times a day and it usually helps me get out one painful burp of gas. I was supposed to go home tonight but spent the night again because pain is not managed yet. I was started on the liquid hydrocodone which should last 4-6 hours and only lasts me about 1.5 hours. Then they give me diludad which lasts for 2 hours max. So pain seems like it will keep me again coupled with the fact that I'm struggling to drink 1 oz Water per hour. I know this is going to get better daily and even with the pain and discomfort I would do it over no doubt! Did anyone stay more than 2 nights because of pain management? Also, any advice to get over the fear of drinking water/sipping broth/baby nibbling Jello? I have clear liquids again today and am already fearing the yogurt and shakes that come tomorrow. ????????????

Pre-op diet - pantry necessities
Susan-031314 replied to wittygirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love the suggestions so far. I would add, do not over-buy. I am still doing this. A single Healthy Choice Soup is 3-4 or more servings for me post-op. I have more than a months supply in my pantry now. If you buy perishables, watch the expiration date. I threw out a bunch of yogurts for that reason as they expired before I could eat them. I have a bunch of Protein shakes that I will probably not use, as I've moved on and some I just can't stand anymore. As to baby food, applesauce with no sugar added was a friend of mine. I liked the ones with additional fruits, but watch for no added sugar. My blender was a better friend than buying a baby food alternative. Follow your Drs lists. Each Dr will have a slightly different program and progression. Be sure to let us know how this goes for you!!! -
HI Randy, I couldn't tolerate Protein drinks either. I would sometimes have a bit of vanilla milk (comes like a juice box for kids) and drinkable yogurt. If you are really not getting much nutrition in, you can switch to regular full-sugar gatorade for the electrolytes. I had to do that for a couple of days. You should also be coming up on your mushies transition - I came alive when I was able to eat a bit of cottage cheese. Take it slow when you introduce new things - you can only get down about 2 oz to begin with.

You might want to increase those carbs. Your body may be holding onto those pounds as a reaction to the workout. Carbs re not evil. Processed carbs are. Good carbs come from beans, dark green veg, rolled oats, yogurts, quinoa, sweet potatoes and nuts to name just a few. Are you fueling your workouts? A protein shake before and an ounce of nuts after might provide the protein and healthy carbs your body needs.

Travel, and it's a learning experience
Jersrose43 replied to fezik23's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
At the airport I go for a sandwich Usually they have somewhere with deli. Here at Newark they make huge sandwiches and I order one. Have them wrap the 2 haves separately First half I remove the break and eat the deli meats for lunch. I keep the other half for later on in the travel day. Many places at airport also have yogurts, some fruits and veggie packs In a pinch - like today- I went to starbucks and grabbed an egg salad sandwich and just removed 1 piece of the multigrain bread and ate the other half. -
I'm looking for ideas too. I'm 5 wks post op and eggs and cheese don't sit well with me too soon for nuts I'm afraid, which leaves nut butters, lunch meat (don't care for the sodium content) and yogurt. Any thing I'm missing? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

So far so good, just a Popsicle, and a Activa yogurt. I am heading into the home stretch! -
Steffyp, Wow you are way ahead of me! I am still on full liquids for the first week. I can have yogurt but no fruit. I have tried my grandson's gogurt-it comes in a stick- and they are wonderful! My next goal is to try greek yogurt- which is a little thicker. I am really nervous about getting something stuck!!! What kind of yogurt did you eat? I start a progression of food this Monday. It starts with cottage cheese. I have not been hungry at all- maybe too scared to eat! However my stomach has not growled once. I do have 2 protein shakes a day and that is 40 g protein. Have you tried protein shakes? I like Slimfast High Protein-chocolate. They aren't bad at all. Keep in touch and let me know how it goes! Good Luck!

I am 4 days out also and I feel great. I have had more energy today but I started my supplements today so I don't know if they had anything to do with it. I went to the grocery store today with my husband and felt pretty good walking around. It's hard to believe I just had major surgery!!! Have you been hungry?? I feel like I have to eat every hour. Today I had yogurt with some fruit blended in it and some split pea soup that I put in the blender and that kept me full longer. I just find it weird that my stomach had been growling.
