    sleeve or band?

Hi Jeffrey, welcome to the BEST support website for the Vertical Sleeve... I just wrote about my recent experiences with Band Vs Sleeve. I was revised on 9/15/10 and to date it is the best thing I've ever done. In going further, we do have a LOT of well established sleevers here who like to continue chiming in. They are all a great help, and none I've seen ever stop Loving their sleeves. Good luck to you!! Here is the link to my last 2 progress posts: 5 Months Post Op and My Revision is the Best Thing
  2. I just want to address the bolded statement. I had a leak 2 days post my revision. I also had horrible anesthesia complications during the repair, landed on life support for 4-5 days and my prognosis was grave at best. I had an extensive 3.5 month long recovery with an additional hospitalization for abscesses, was on TPN with a central pic line for over 2 weeks with nothing by mouth for over 20 days after the leak repair. My husband was deployed, and not allowed to come home during all of this even as I lay in ICU with a 10% chance of survival. I can assure you that my recovery was pure hell, but not once did I think "oh crap what have I done!". To this very day, I have absolutely ZERO regrets nor am I anything short of 100% certain that I made the right choice with VSG. I never once doubted that I made the "right" choice with VSG, and today, I'm even more certain that I made the best decision. I've said it many times here that I would endure every struggle and obstacle in my recovery to live the life I have today. I just thought I would throw out my experience to give a different perspective on complications with any surgery.
  3. You are correct. I had to have my band removed due to complications and was thinking of a sleeve revision. During my reading, I discovered that many bypass and sleeve patients are going back to get bands to control the hunger...which comes back after their 'honeymoon' period. When I spoke to my surgeon about this, he said that the band is considered a tool for getting rid of hunger. The sleeve is considered a tool for restriction only. .

My Journey... thus far! (this is long)

wow, im so proud and happy for you sweetie, im stalled also sometimes i wish i got the bypass
  5. I was revised on May 6th at 165 pounds. I lost another 25ish in the first 2 months or so and than stopped.I am happy where I am at but I feel I should be loosing at least a pound or two with the little bit of food I eat.
  6. I'm in the same boat. I am over two months out from revision, and down 19 lbs from surgery day. 202 down to 183. But I must say that I notice so much with that 19 pounds lost. Bones I have not seen in decades. I was 18 years old the last time I was in the 180's (I'm 40 now). Also many people have commented on my shrinking, and every time my husband hugs me he says "You are so skinny!" Gotta love that. When I went from 255 down to 215, 40 pounds, no one really noticed. When I hit 205, a few people asked and were shocked I had lost 50 lbs. It was like, really?? Then looking me up and down to see where. But now, losing this 19, I am getting comments like "wow you have lost a lot of weight". We all just have to hang in there! Esmeralda, it's been a month since you posted this thread, how is it going?

    Pcos?

I have pcos! I had the bypass 6 weeks ago. Before surgery I asked my surgeon what will happen if I loose the excess weight! He said that is will make a 80% difference! And my period will be 100% better. I do now have horrible mood swings

    Pcos?

Does anyone out there have PCOS? My 20 year old daughter does. She is going to have revision surgery from band to bypass. We didn't know that the band isn't very effective for women with PCOS. How do you handle mood swings, and sleep problems? Does PCOS go away post surgery? Thanks! Christi
  9. @@baoros - I feel your pain! I have lost 66lbs in 13months since surgery and lost 40 presurgery. All you CAN do is make sure you are on plan and if you are not change what you're eating. Change things up. Our bodies get used to what we do so change food and exercise up. Just keep plugging along. I have not exercised and I should start but I haven't done it yet, my bad. I don't like to complain too much because I have not exercised. Sometimes I wish I had gone with the gastric bypass. But I didn't and I don't really have the money to do a revision and I really wonder if that would help anyway. I am still losing but its very slow. I keep worrying about running out the honey moon period and still have weight to lose. Hang in there. I'm sure you'll get more replies. Think positive thoughts. You didn't mention your age so if you are older that might make a difference plus you have thyroid issues and I would think that would affect your weight loss too. You mentioned being tired. Are you taking Vitamins, are you eating enough? I had very deep exhaustion that lasted about 6 months. Its gotten a lot better but my energy is not what I would like it to be. Exercise, I'm sure would help that. Anyway...Maybe you could let us know more on your food and if you exercise...
  10. Hi Everyone, I am still pre op but I will be having the bypass in hopefully Jan or Feb. I am practicing what I will eat afterwards. We go to the movies frequently and I have seen where it says you shouldn't eat popcorn after surgery. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can snack on ? I love popcorn so this is going to be difficult to not eat. Can I just eat a small amount? I have already figured out what to bring to drink. Thank you for any suggestions.

    Drinking and eating

My dr said it was an old rule for bypass patients. He says its no big deal.
  12. I had to have bypass because of GERD.. Barrett Esophagus, & H. Pylori .. On top of that it ended up being open because of a past hernia repair with mesh.. Munky

Has anyone had revision surgery in Mexico, any thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. @weezzee. All symptoms of huge hiatal hernia disappeared after my rny bypass. That was the way to go for me. Good luck
  16. I had bypass done on 1/25 and had a huge hiatal hernia. My surgery took longer than expected, but he said there was no way he could leave the hernia without repair. The hernia repair has been the most painful part of my recovery. The surgeon said I would be really sore and it would feel like I had broken ribs and he wasn't kidding. I was in extreme pain! I ended up with sub. emphysema and my face became so swollen and it crackled if you touched it. I am totally fine now and the surgery was a success. Message me if you have anymore questions. 17. Dr. Watkins doesn't now nor has he ever performed gastric bypass. He feels it's too invasive when you can lose as well with the other procedures available.

    port flipped

well my dr called and I'm having the revision on the 31st, thanks for writing back Kelly I'm feeling less apprehension unfortunately I never got any fill because we discovered this first time out. I never felt anything or have any pain at all and it's been flipped since May. Hope the new medicine your dr gave you works if it does tell me what it was so I can get it too.... take care Tara
  19. poohlvr, my doc says 60-80g of protein/day, but it is the same for her lapband and gastric bypass patients. Maybe she just does it for everyone. Theoretically lapband patients shouldn't need as much protein as gastric bypass. If your doc says 25 and you aren't having problems then I wouldn't worry. the only thing I guess is that I find that the more protein that I have the less hungry I feel. I'm not sure anyone knows why some people's hair falls out. I have heard protein, biotin, multiple different vitamins etc. I know if mine starts to go I will start taking them all .

    Not Acid Reflux

So I went in yesterday and got another .5 cc's taken out. I feel better, but have a strong feeling it's going to come back again. My Dr said he see's this regergitation/GERD in 20-30% of his patients. Wow. That is alot. He said that when it gets really bad, patients either just get the band removed or changed to Gastric Bypass. This is totally freaking me out. It seems like there is a strong chance that I will have to loose my band! I don't think I would want to revise to anthing permanent like bypass. It sounds like some people just get a new band placed....but isn't this issue just going to happen again? My Dr wants me to see how it goes and if it starts happening again to come back and he'll do the barium swallow. I don't know what I am going to do....
  21. When I started researching on why I might be having problems with my band I came across Dr. R.'s site and it listed hundreds of issues that people had with the band so it made me feel like maybe I screwed up because I got the band. Now I realize he was just trying to sell himself. I then found this forum and have learned that a lot of it has to do with my restriction and what I'm eating/not eating etc... So I'm happy I got the band because I still think the other is more drastic and scary to me even though my 19 year old is having gastric bypass surgery next month. Of course I worry like hell for her but it's her decision and she's researched it and seems to be happy with her choice and her surgeon. So all we do is support each other.:smile2:
  22. was banded 4/8/08. Self pay. Ins. excludes weight loss surgery. Am doing well...have lost at least 20#. This was just my experience but I had some serious IBS previously. I took 4 Bentyl a day....rarely made it thru a meal w/o heading to facilities. Was not a fun travel companion. Have not taken Bentyl since 4/7. Haven't needed medication. IBS seems to be quieted down. Hope it stays that way. Diabetes and heart disease run in my family too. In fact I've had 5 way heart bypass surgery in 2005. I'd say....go for it..you have already been accepted. Husband is very supportive, parents and siblings are also very supportive. Do the reasons to have the surgery outweigh the reasons not to have it? Good luck in your decision.
  23. I went with the sleeve because I did not like the thought of the absorption issues that go with the bypass. The best advice I can give you is do your homework and decide which is best for you, make an informed choice. I have had no issues what so ever with my surgery and I am quickly closing in on my goal. Go with what you are comfortable with and what your doctor thinks is best so you have the best chance of reaching your expectations.

    Liquid diet begins....

My surgery date is 4/12/16, a day after yours. I'm on day 2 of liquid diet and it's definitely rough. My doctor doesn't allow for any solids including veggies or chicken. Also, 3 days before surgery i'm allowed Clear liquids only. I think that's going to be the worst part. Are any of you converting from lap band to bypass?

    Knee pain

Hello I just had my bypass on June 12th. Aside from the blood clot and infection I got in my arm that had the IV, I feel great! I do have severe knee arthritis from my additional weight. I have lost 38 pounds since starting my journey, just got off all the weight from the Water they pumped in me so I don't know what I have actually lost since surgery, and I was wondering how long did it take for your knees to start feeling better? Since we can't take any anti-inflammatory meds it's been a little rough. I was 350 and now 312, so hoping it will start to relieve. I have read that for every pound we carry it is 5-7 pounds on ours knees. So I have technically taken about 150 pounds off my knees. Also wondering if we can have cortisone injections. I have read conflicting information on that. I wanted to have an injection of anti-inflammatory for my infected arm and they said that it still goes through the stomach so just thought maybe the cortisone would too. Thoughts our suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
