    Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

Do you make your own smoothies? I have with Greek yogurt but not protein powder? Do you think a full scoop of protein would dissolve okay in 12oz smoothie or would it need to be half scoop?? I have a feeling I will be one of the firsts to order protein powder in the kids size. Lol
  2. I had RNY on Tuesday, five days ago. Knock on wood, I’m doing well. But, I am starving today. I cannot bear the protein shakes and broth. It makes me sick to even look at them now. My doctor prescribes the same diet to everyone. Day 1 - 14 clear liquids and protein shakes; day 14 - 21 add plain yogurt, liquified cream of wheat, low-fat milk; day 22 start puréed food. I’m not going to make it that long without food. Why are there so many discrepancies among how doctors determine post-op guidelines?? I’ve seen people on purée by week two. Can I start something else now? Ugh. Having temporary buyer’s remorse.

    Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Hello, I’ve been down a few days after surgery. Trying to force myself to eat. Nothing is good to me. Yogurt, Jello, low sodium cream soups and broth’s. I keep getting this weird feeling in my chest after drinking fluids, and eating very yucky feeling. Suffering the past few days with major headaches and HBP. went to emergency last night for headaches and they only gave me Tylenol. I spent $100 for that tidbit of information. Feel nauseated most of the time.
  4. I am 3 months out and have 3 small meals and 2 snacks. Breakfast - 75 gms low fat Greek yogurt and some berries or passion fruit Lunch - 1/2 cup soup or meat stew Snack - 25 gms ham or some deli meat rolled with cheese or cream cheese Dinner - 50 gms fish or seafood in a homemade sauce Snack - melba toast or thin cracker with pate or blue cheese or 20 gms cashew nuts I drink milky coffees and am mostly getting up to 60 gms of protein. It took me about 10 weeks to get to this goal. { I also detest protein drinks. } I am overestimating my calories because I don't usually manage to eat all my food. I estimate it to be 600 - 800 a day. Hope this helps
  5. At about 3 months mark, I think I am finally comfortable what works for me. Recommendation of my program is 3 meals and 3 snacks. I found that a bit too much, made it seem like I have to get up and eat every few hours. 4 meals in total work for me with 0.5 to 0.75 cup of milk in between meals, which works as fluid and protein intake for me! I have read various info on the meal size how many can't eat beyond 0.33 to 0.5 cup, not sure if that's only solid. But in my case I can easily do about 0.75 cup at every meal. Ofc half of that includes yogurt majority of the time. Since yogurt isn't solid, may be that's why in total I can manage 0.75 cup per meal. But I love including Skyr (Ice landic yogurt) with my meals, easily helps to achieve my protein goal without having to rely on any shakes or protein powders. So yeh 4 meals in total throughout the day with milk consumption in between. And with that, I am easily able to manage to get my 64oz of fluids in too! This will be my routine until I hit my goal. Hope it helps. Good luck finding your routine. P.S - I also get hungry in a few hours, and that's when I feel comfortable consuming my meal. I like that my hunger signal hasn't completely disappeared. I like feeding myself when I know that my body is asking for it.
  6. I am 4 weeks PO now, but feeling very worried, since last week I started taking vitamins, it may be a coincidence or not but the scale is broken, it was very nice to see one pound or half of one gone every day but for the last 8 -10 days the scale does not want to move, I even gain one or 2 pounds, it is driving me nuts!. I finally can take the 64 oz of water, I am eating 2 ounces of food 3 times a day and my snacks are liquids or 2 oz of yogurt. I am walking 60 minutes in the treadmill every other day. I am making the 60gr protein per day even taking those horrible tasting protein drinks. What does the scale want from me?!
  7. Thanks for the feedback. Yeah it doesn’t seem normal but I honestly don’t look up a lot of forums or ask for help. I like the weight falling off and amazingly I don’t really have a lack of energy despite never really eating anything. I work out at the gym three times a week. I mainly drink water through the day and one cup of oikos yogurt and that’s it
  8. I am almost three months postop and I have not been able to eat anything more than foods like yogurt or applesauce consistency. I have tried eating soft vegetables very well chewed up chicken tilapia etc and I throw up afterwards. Is this normal? I read about people eating eggs and soft foods but I can barely stomach a little yogurt or applesauce. I have my 3 month visit in less than two weeks any suggestions or thoughts on what I can do or say? Thanks

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi and Thanks for answering. I looked through all my papers I was given and funny I don't see anything about sodium but I could be over looking it. I did see where chicken and stars and cream of chicken was ok which I ate the first week minus the chicken in the soup. I felt kind of funny due to the carbs and sodium in it. Might be why I have only lost 3 pounds, 2 weeks tomorrow since surgery. I am not suppose to advance to solid foods till next week and actually the thought of anything solid even a egg doesn't seem possible. I am living on soups, greek yogurt, fat free cottage cheese and protein shakes. I did eat a half a can of the deviled ham yesterday but kinda felt like I was in a no no zone, lol. I am not a big drinker, so getting the 64 oz down is a real challenge, I am using crystal light as a helper.

Accountability Post .... Being honest with yourself

Hey we had surgery about the same time and I was thinking the same thing. I hit my goal weight and stalled…I’d still like to drop a bit more, but it hasn’t really happened. I want to take the month of March to really make sure that this is my “final weight”, and it’s not just where I landed because I loosened up my food plan. I want to start tracking this month, really cut down on snacking and get my evening time eating back to where I want it. So for me my resolutions are: I will track my food, even if it’s a guess on some items like dinners out. I get stuck on “well I don’t know how much this is so I won’t bother”, and I know that’s a cop out. I will make sure that snack food doesn’t get into the house- no nuts, Greek yogurt bars, chips, etc. I’ll keep up my current exercise routine Let’s have an awesome March!

    Lunch idea after gastric bypass

A combo or anything below......... Tuna with some crackers and cheese, hard boiled eggs, rolled lunchmeat, chicken salad, egg salad, slices of spicy salami or pepperoni and some cheese slices/cubes, left overs, grape tomatoes, cucumber slices, cottage cheese, low fat yogurt tubes, nuts, sandwich roll ups on low carb tortillas, shrimp, etc. I also suggest visiting Bariatric Queen's website. https://bariatricqueen.com/tag/bariatric-meal-prep/ She lists her meal plans at all stages and has lots of great ideas for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, etc.

I usually have between 600 and 700, maybe 800 calories if I eat some fruit. 380 calories are from 2 shakes and the yogurt. That ensures I'm getting plenty of protein and 1/3 of my liquids, then leaves 100-200 for each meal, which is plenty, and then I can have some fruit here and there. I forgot to mention earlier that last night I had 1/2 chicken taco and it was the best thing ever. 1/2 low carb tortilla = 25 cal, 2oz shredded chicken = 60 cal, 2 tbs of refried beans = 30 cal, a little taco sauce = 10 cal, and 1/4 bag of Quest Protein chips = 30 cal. What was nice about this meal was that it kept me feeling full for longer than other meals I had been eating and I just felt very satisfied. Almost "normal." 🙂

    Got my surgery date!

I stayed a second night in the hospital due to pain and lack of a dedicated caretaker at home. Since my dad is having health issues of his own, my mother was unable to travel to be with me so i felt better staying in hospital longer. Im single and live alone with pets, so dont have a human at home to help if i were to have an issue early on, but now im doing well enough i can get myself to the ER if necessary. i am on pureed foods, and tolerating it ok so far. Only a couple episodes of vomiting which were definitely over eating related. Liquids and yogurt dont make me full so i just stop eating after a serving. But more “solid” foods do. Still learning to eat slow. Im used to eating on the go so taking a full 30 min to finish 2 oz is a real challenge. I dont feel any restriction, i seem to go from hungry (starving) to pain. Im thinking the pain is the new full feeling, which sucks. I used to enjoy eating but now not as much. i miss food too. Hopefully we will both be able to incorporate more normalcy into our diets soon!

    January sleevers

I'm 5 weeks out as of yesterday and I have protein shakes in the morning and afternoon (Fairlife also), then a Light & Fit yogurt for snack mid morning (80 cal, 12g protein). For lunch and dinner, I've eaten a variety of things... Started with flaky types of fish and over the last week have tried different kinds of meat. I successfully ate pulled pork, shredded chicken, and 2 tiny beef meatballs. I added sugar-free BBQ sauce if it seemed like it might be too dry. I ate some canned green beans and zucchini. I eat unsweetened apple sauce every once in awhile. Today for lunch, I had 2 oz of turkey deli meat, a slice of fresh mozzarella cheese, and 5 cheez it crackers (chewed well). Tonight I plan to have some kind of seafood with peas and carrots. My husband grilled some chicken last night and it was tougher than what I had been eating and I didn't enjoy having to chew each bite a gazillion times to make it soft. So I'm sticking with the softer meats for a bit. I haven't had any issues or tummy trouble at all thank goodness! I am going to stay away from any raw vegetables like lettuce for awhile as I heard those can be harder to digest?

What to add to meat to increase moisture?

If you add the ranch dressing seasoning to Greek yogurt it makes a really good ranch dipping sauce too you could dip meat in that to add moisture.

    Smoothie king

I have never been there. I tried looking online at a menu and it doesn’t have the nutrition information. But it says they use individually quick frozen fruit and veggies that are In their own juices and they use chobani Greek yogurt. Seems like if you don’t get one with added sugars it would be okay and one with added protein I don’t see how you could go wrong. I am going to inspect the macros on the menu and watch closely as they make it for sure but I am going to check it out.

Yes. I can have yogurts, shakes broths. I'm getting the sleeve. I was set on the bypass but my doctor was concerned about my iron levels long term. So we switched to sleeve. It's next Wednesday! 😀
  18. I second the Greek yogurt option for protein. Depending on your program and what you can eat at this stage, cheese (fat free or low fat) was my friend. It kind of still is. Seriously, ricotta bake (I hunted down fat free ricotta), cottage cheese (refuse to touch it now, but it was amazing post op). Refried beans were a huge hit for me - I couldn't do pureed meat and even soft white fish did not agree with my tummy. Pureed legume soups (lentil, split pea with ham - it looks like baby poop when pureed but tasted amazing when nothing else did) were a huge hit during that stage. It might be too early for some of these things depending on your program, but soon enough you'll be able to have them and I definitely recommend looking into them when you can. Also, a comment on protein shakes. Not sure what you have tried, but post op, I preferred Unjury powder mixed with unsweetened soy milk. So much more palatable than the pre-mixed shakes. Even now, I have premixed on hand for when I am on the go and need extra calories for the day, but mixing my own is a huge improvement.
  19. I got really sick of protein drinks too. I started mixing the chocolate ones with iced coffee. Also, try low-sugar Greek yogurt. If you are able to have mushy foods, try refried beans with plain Greek yogurt and some cheese. You may get less hungry once you're on solid foods.

    Calories in a day

I agree with what everyone else said, but I will say that right away after surgery I was eating 400-500 calories a day, but it was all protein drinks and yogurt. Around 4 months out I was eating 900-1100 calories a day, and now at five months out, it's still basically that, although some days are higher or lower.
  21. I had the Gastric Sleeve procedure done almost a month ago. I've had no issues with the Full Liquid Diet stage, but when it came to transitioning to purees, it felt as though my stomach wasn't happy. It was suggested that it could have been the foods I was eating (too acidic, diary, etc) or that they weren't pureed enough. Other suggestions were that I wasn't eating slow enough. But sometimes, as soon as I took one bite my stomach would immediately start gurgling or I'd get the instant pain of acid reflux/heartburn. I am supposed to start "Soft Solids" on Saturday, but I fear with the trouble I faced with the purees...that I might need an extra week. I've had no issues with eating yogurt, jello, pudding, or soup (which is what I've tried to stick with since I know how my body will react). But with anything else I've tried, it is either the immediate gurgling or acid reflux/heartburn feeling. Is this something commonly experienced or something I should inform my doctor about? Kay_G_B

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I just went and got my little surgery book. Looks like I can have 2 pieces of fruit a day and then an 'optional' 1 bread or 1 dairy - the examples of this are 1 slice of bread, 1/2 cup cooked whole grain (I had oatmeal this morning), 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese, yogurt, 8oz milk, OR 1 oz low fat cheese. The little books says I can mix 2 tablespoons sugar free pudding mix to my shakes. So far I'm totally fine. I thought about food when leaving work to run home (forgot my mixer for the shakes) but other than that so far so good. I'm ready to stop feeling powerless. I'm ready to like myself again.
  23. I have been traveling since 4 weeks out from surgery more weeks than not. Here are some ideas (bearing in mind most of my travel is in the US, so I'm not sure what brands you have): Fat free, artificially sweetened or plain greek yogurt. Basically, you want no or low added sugar. You can get that from a grocery store and occasionally in airports (usually the yogurt is full of sugar, but you might get lucky!). Refried beans Ground meat (mince) based dishes like chili, tacos, Ma po Tofu, etc. Soft cheeses Protein drinks (or if you're further out, protein bars) Soup - cream of whatever, bean soup, etc Apple sauce Oatmeal (no sugar added) Banana Mashed veggies like sunchoke, cauliflower, potato, etc Hardboiled eggs with hummus If you are five weeks out and eating normal foods, it's really easy: you can go to a supermarket and buy deli meat, pre chopped veggies/fruit, hummus, cheese, etc. Or at restaurants: chili, soup, the inside of tacos or lasagna, hamburger minus the bun, flaky fish, etc.
  24. Can you have fish at this stage? I could and so I basically lived on it. I traveled during the soft food stage and this stuff is available everywhere in the UK: cans of tuna greek yogurt protein pudding (I can't remember the name but it's a German brand and it's pretty good) soft cheeses For the plane, you might get lucky and sometimes airlines serve fish or mushy vegetables, which you could have.Otherwise bring some protein oatmeal with you, a little tupperware container, and ask the flight attendant for hot water and make that as many times as you need during the flight. Whenever I travel I take this with me as a backup food because all you need is hot water to make it.

    Pureed foods

Approved on my plan: lentil or black bean soup (pureed in the blender), scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt (no fruit bits), small-curd cottage cheese, mashed banana or cooked carrots with protein powder. All in pea-sized bites chewed to applesauce consistency.
