    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

So my surgeon told me if things got worse to go to the nearest ER. Well I did and the ER dr said "are you sure you're supposed to be here? We dont have anyone who does gastric bypass" I'm super sick, weak, and having severe pains in my stomach. I hate some drs who dont want to help. Needless to say, I'm waiting on a CT and labs from a dr who thinks I dont know what I'm talking about. Hah
  2. I joined a bariatric support group at Torrance Memorial Hospital yesterday and it was so inspiring and incredible to meet other people who are on this same journey! They knew nothing about this forum, by the way. Most of them had a significant other, a sibling or a friend tag along for support — how kind! There was one young lady (Ilana) who came with a friend (Katie) who was taking notes for her and asking all these questions — “playing the devil’s advocate”, as she put it. I shared my story. I was emotional and lengthy, but everyone was supportive… I met 6 people — some who’ve had surgery already (one lady was only 9 days post-op) and some who are still in their waiting phase (I’m the only revision and lowest BMI, but oh well)… There was one lady (Lisa) who lost 40 lbs. in her pre-op diet, had the sleeve done in October 2018 and thereafter lost another 80 lbs. — simply incredible! She said she’d actually like to be 10 lbs. heavier… (You're never going to hear me say that, LOL!) I got everyone’s phone number and created a GroupMe group for us. I’m excited for that to be our safe space; sharing/support portal kind of thing, especially since everyone is local and we can meet up!

  3. one month picture before surgery was kinda scared to post this been kinda scared of tge surgery as it gets closer. my starting weight when i went to the doctor and wanted to do the gastric bypass was 298 now i am 260 really wish i had a best friend i could talk to or hang out with to go threw this to say you got this once in awhile but i keep having to remind myself i am alone and i know in my heart that i can do this does anyone else ever kinda feel any of these things Sent from my LG-M430 using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. I am 14 months post op from a gastric bypass and I have only lost 72lbs!!! I have been at this weight about 6 months post op. I am in the gym 3-4 times a week since April. Lifting weights. And doing cardio. I am a vegan/vegetarian. I have lost inches, but not in numbers. I am all out of ideas on what to do to get me to lose some weight. I am now struggling with my nutrition intake from dieting so I have to basically up my calorie/protein intake. Has anyone else experienced this. Or is it just me 😔😔😔😒😒😒
  5. Can anyone tell me your experiences revising from the sleeve to the bypass? I'm hoping it will relieve my acid reflux, but I've heard it doesn't work. Sent from my SM-J337P using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. On another topic thread I have been reading, several of the people who were either newly sleeved or reported that from the time they were newly sleeved, they did not get relief from 'true physical hunger pains'. Not talking about head hunger masking itself as physical hunger. I mean the "real deal" here. I thought that with sleeve...and bypass...that hormones like grehlin (referred to as 'hunger' hormone because it stimulates appetite..and think it promotes storage of fat) and maybe others I'm not recalling were basically 'short circuited' to give additional help in addition to the 'pouch intake limitations'. I honestly was looking just as forward to this relief as I was to the pouch limitations. This goes to show you no matter how much you think you've read up on stuff about the procedure you are having, you can come across sometimes...VERY IMPORTANT stuff that you did not know. I know I'm having pre-surgery jitters (7/1) but my first gut reaction last night (after a VERY stressful day) was that there was no use in getting 85% of my stomach removed to just still be literally hungry all the time, even considering the physical limitation. Am not saying this is a good or correct reaction, but being honest in that is was my GUT reaction.

    Pounds lost

I’m 3 months post gastric bypass and have lost around 52lbs so far. My highest weight when I started this journey was 330lbs, pre surgery weight was 284.7lbs, and my current weight fluctuates between 231-234lbs. My goal weight is 160lbs so I have around 70lbs left before I get there.

Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

9 months post Gastric Bypass stats: 5’10” HW 5/17/18: 325lbs SW 9/17/18: 304lbs CW: 185lbs GW / Ideal weight per surgeon: 165 I’m willing to go as low as 150lbs I’m training for 2 half marathons and a full marathon (September,October,December) and my struggle will be keeping my weight above 149lbs. I’ve slowly increased my intake to 1000 cals and then 1200 cals but my training will pick up in the next couple of weeks and I know I’ll need to eat even more. I never thought I’d struggle to eat enough but when I was training for my quarter marathon earlier this year lack of food made me feel weak at random times smh.

    Drinking Post Op

Was told by my doc that for WLS patients, one drink is about the equivalent of three. My mother had gastic bypass back in 2013, and last year, she was drinking with friends. She'd had four glasses of wine in four hours. She got pulled over on her way home and had a BAC of .15.

    Will Be Banded No More

Yes, absolutely! So I am guessing you too will have to wait the 3mths for healing and then revised to the sleeve? I am so glad we have surgeons that have our best interest at heart! Good luck to you and I wish you the best, please keep in touch!
  12. My GERD/acid reflux was terrible after getting the sleeve 3 years ago. I ended up with 4 ulcers in my esophagus. I just had a revision surgery to the bypass yesterday and so glad I made this choice.

Any August 2019 people out there?

Curious as to why surgery is an option at 156 lbs... Is it to resolve the gastroparesis? And is bypass the only option because of GERD?
  14. deletedprofile123

Any August 2019 people out there?

As @vovo2013 mentioned, I would get the sleeve because of the reflux. I didn’t even have any issues with reflux but after my sleeve, I developed severe GERD and I’m now revising to the RNY mainly because of GERD. Whatever decision you make, I wish you great success and health!

    15 yrs into gastric bypass

I’m just starting out but I have read that it helps to do a pouch reset. Having hormone, metabolic and other medical issues I can relate. Try to pinpoint what medication might be affecting your weight and why. For example I needed beta blockers and the generic caused more side effects that included slowing my metabolism. Once I got on the name brand and also adjusted my calories it helped. If you can pinpoint the medication ask the doctor about switching to something with less side effects of weight gain. Also see an endocrinologist to have hormones checked and anything that could be throwing off your weight there. You might try some natural hormone supplements ie. Wild yam, black cohosh, (my head isn’t working to think of them all) 15 years a lot can change and it takes time to re-evaluate and adjust. 2-Week Pouch Reset Diet The 2-Week Pouch Reset Diet can help you if your weight loss stalls after getting gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, lap-band, or another type of weight loss surgery. There may be a time after weight loss surgery when you wonder whether your pouch has stretched, or when you get off track with your eating. The 2-Week Pouch Reset Diet mimics your original post-op diet, but it moves through the stages more quickly. You start with clear liquids, move to full liquids, then progress to pureed foods, semi-soft foods, and solid foods. The 2-Week Pouch Reset Diet can help you: Break the pattern of off-track eating. Remember what it feels like when you feel restriction from your pouch. Practice stopping eating before you feel overly full. Diet Guidelines: When you get to the solid foods diet, this is the time when you will feel that your pouch is working again. Eat slowly and mindfully, and focus on the feeling you have when you stop eating just before you are full. You can continue on the solid foods plan (repeat Days 10-14) for as long as your doctor agrees. Drink plenty of water and other calorie-free or low-calorie liquids to stay hydrated. June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

I’m halfway through purée week- get to move on to soft foods Friday - so excited. I had a lapband revision to DS on 6-7, tuna and chicken salad purée along with cottage cheese have been go to for me this week and all goes down fine. Adding in shakes here and there to hit my 90g protein goal (plus they count as liquid). Just tried a caramel premier it’s pretty good. No nausea no constipation- if anything it’s the opposite. Mild soreness occasionally but I haven’t used even a Tylenol in a week. full steam ahead!

    September 2019 🍂🍁

Hi Frustr! I had a transoral bariatric surgery in 2009 that wasn't approved by FDA, as it was not working as they thought it would. I lost 100 lbs on my own! Working out and cutting out all the fried food i used to love and working out 6x a week. I was taking about 30k steps per day. Walking everywhere all the time. I maintained my weight loss for about 6 years....began fertility treatment which contribute to lots of weight gain, became pregnant and have struggled since, gained back almost all of my weight. HW 291=8, lowest 162, currently 250. Stopped working out, which doesn't help. i am doing revision to a surgery that gave me zero restriction. I am currently debating on going back to my original surgeon or a new one. I have a scheduled appointment with a new surgeon for consultation. Very excited to see him. Hope that helps! my surgeon suggest i do the bypass and i suggested he takes my suggestion of DS lol, which he agreed lol. The second surgeon is well known for DS and SIPS, so I am certain he will agree as well.
  20. Welcome sibling! We are just 2 days apart. I wonder if the liquid diet..and number of days is related in any way to a person's BMI or ??? Within the specific 'Sleeve' and 'Bypass' surgery forums I think there are topics for 'July 2019 surgeries'...but as the gastric sleeve one is not super active yet, I had thought...why not start one for all July people regardless of which surgery they are having as we surely share the same anxiety, hope, nervousness, fear, etc. Guess we'll see if anyone else joins in here, if not, we know about each other now...lol
  21. I will be having gastric bypass on July 3. I started my program in Feb 2019, but have battled weight issues my whole life. I am excited and anxious about my upcoming date. I cannot imagine weighing less than I do now. At 42 years old, I've been morbidly obese my entire adult life and obese my entire life. So many thoughts run through my head about this surgery, but I tell myself to take it one baby step at a time. My program only requires 2 days liquid diet, so I don't even start that til July 1. Would love to keep in contact with you and our other July siblings [emoji16] Good luck to all of us! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Yeah and they have another one almost as cute for RNY bypass, wish I had thought of it myself, if I were your BFBP (BEST Future Bariatric Patient) if would be tickled to death with such a thoughtful gift! Do you realize with YOU going first, you get to mentor her? A journey shared is always less frightening.👭Best Wishes to You Both, update us when you can, okay?
  23. Because of acid reflux, bypass was the best option for me. Reflux is now gone. The sleeve can cause increased reflux, so that might be the deciding factor for you. With bypass, the stomach is still inside, but detached from it's ability to send hunger signals. The ghrenlin hormone is inactivated, so you do not have the hunger signals - at least for the first year average, but this can vary from individual to individual. From what I understand, dumping is mostly triggered by sugar or high carb content. It made me commit to never eating sugar again - aversion therapy, I guess. This can actually be a good thing for your overall, lifetime eating pattern. Just the fear of dumping is strong motivation for me to avoid any desserts or sweetened beverages. I have never experienced dumping and hope I never do.

    Question on labs

I am one year post op bypass. I had my labs done and all were good except my bariatric PA states I do not need to start iron supplementation. Based on my results, it seems like I could become deficient in the next year. I'm not in the medical field so I don't kniow. My program doesn't require I take extra iron. Here are the results: Iron 41-156 Result 58 TIBC 232-386 Result. 397 (A high reading indicates deficiency) Transferrin Saturation. 15-57 Result 15 Ferritin serum 15-150. Result 16 Can anyone explain why I don't need to start supplementation if I don't have my labs checked for another year?
  25. had gastric bypass DS loop and my gallbladder removed on March 11th 2019. Since then I have gone from 297.7 down to 242. Total of 55.7 lbs. in 3 months and 13 days. But I’m the last 39 days I have only lost 10 lbs. is this a plateau? Is this still good since I have not gained any weight back? I’m feeling better in the last 2 weeks FINALLY.... I had surgery complications and medication changes and problems that caused extra pain and some minor depression, so recovery took longer than “usual” patients. I think? I don’t know how long other people take to get out and about, start regularly exercising (just walking and some 2 pound weights) But the slow down in weight loss worries me. Also, I have a HUGE fear of stretching my stomach back out. Every time I eat I get scared my stomach is stretching at the staples. I would love some feedback of your experiences, ideas, your suggestions, possibly re-assurance that I’m doing ok?? Also, I love to eat fruit, and I try to limit myself to 2 a day, but I worry about sugars... what do you all do? Thanks! Claire
