I'm done going through this procedure

Where I live there are/were hardly any hoops to jump through. I wish there had been more and I wish I had been better informed. Looking into the sleeve was a 2 year search and still knew very little about it. I learned a lot from this very site. Many were very helpful to me and patient. I was going for the bypass and was encouraged to have the sleeve. I waited 4 years for WLS. I would have gladly gone through the whole circus if I had understood better what might happen to me or what the possible complications might be other then dying and of course the leak. As said before this is not for the faint of heart. No surgery is! It is not the easy way out. It is chosen by most who have tried everything else first. Until you have done that. Then you should chose not to have this surgery. For me it was life or death. I chose life but that has been with a different kind of price to pay. Don't do this unless you are 100 % committed and 100% sure that this is the best way for you. As it is a lot of work to diet which way you chose... All the best to you and your future efforts in the battle of obesity. We are cheering for you.

    SURGERY DATE

Hi all! Tomorrow I will receive my surgery date. I’m excited and nervous all at once. I feel prepared in terms of knowledge - but I still have several people who love me very much expressing major concern regarding my decision to do gastric bypass surgery. As we all know, this is our decision – but hearing others who think I’m making a huge mistake – it kind of gets into my head a bit. I’m so glad I found this forum. My new peeps! I will need you greatly as I get ready for surgery!!!
  3. Of course there are pros and cons to both.....I crossed Bypass off the list because of the long-term complications I've read about in several studies published in medical journals from the Bypass and malnutrition, as well as searching for patients who had the surgery over 5 years ago on forums (I couldn't find many). There are complications that can arise with the band as well, but the band, you can take it out if you run into trouble. The bypass is for life-complications and all. Please, please look into the evidence (and lack of long-term info out there) that shows the problems so many GBP patients are having getting in the necessary Vitamins and minerals. Long term Vitamin A deficiency means you could lose night vision (no more driving at night!). Long term Calcium deficiency means you could have early onset osteoperosis and break bones easily. These things are happening to people who have been taking all of their prescribed supplements. There's just not a whole lot of positive evidence from cases 10+ years out from having GBP surgery. And yes, I am extremely obsessive in doing this kind of research! Did patients lose the weight, and quickly? Mostly yes, but at what price in the long term? It bothers me that people aren't talking about this more. We are supposed to be turning to WLS because we are done with the "quick fix" method to weight loss (meaning losing a lot and losing it fast), so if that's the attraction for anyone, they need to put that aside when making their decision. My BMI is 47-point-something, and I am actually looking forward to putting in the work in my eating choices and exercise this time because this time, I will also have this tool as an additional motivator and assistant in fighting hunger. It's going to take longer than if I had chosen bypass, but I'm okay with that. I think if you are going to be successful with the band, it doesn't matter how much weight you need to lose, what matters is that you are willing to change your life; commit to healthy eating and exercise, and the band will help you get to your goal. Of course, whatever you do decide is what must be best for you. Just weigh your decision very carefully and practically. And good luck to you!
  4. I have RA as well, and years of prednisone and the inability to move caused huge weight gain. Research and anecdotal evidence showed RA pts who had bypass showed signs of remission. So, I had it and have been symptom free since March 23!! Good job!!! I'm down from 283 to 160, almost to goal! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

GERD After Revision to Bypass and Linx

Just a quick update, my endoscopy showed that I had a significant amount of bile reflux. I haven’t had my follow up appointment with him yet to talk more about it, but it sounds like bile reflux can happen when you have bypass and also when you have your gallbladder removed, so that might be what’s going on. I also have a hernia that needs to be repaired. I’ll post an update once I gave my follow-up with the doctor in early November.

    Can anyone relate

Hi I'm not from Oregon but I had my RNY by Dr Ramy Awad to. Out of all the posts I've read you are the first person I've found who had it by the same dr. Congrats on your weight loss. It's been 2 and 1/2 years since my first surgery. I had to go back in for a revision 9 months ago because I had a gastric fistula that went from my old stomach to the pouch and caused an ulcer that would not heal. Dr. Awad fixed it and everything is going good now. I understand the head games. It's hard sometimes. I have trouble getting in all my protein. I eat a lot of cottage cheese. I hope you find someone close to talk with but there are always this site to help.
  7. Hi there I had my band to bypass revision on the 13 may. I'm from Perth western Australia.. Where are you all from. When did you have your surgeries..??
  8. Hello everyone, so glad to finally find a forum that may suit me. My GP recommended a gastric sleeve, but when I saw the surgeon, he recommended the Omega Loop, or mini gastric bypass. I am finding it difficult to find much information or support about this procedure; fairly new in Australia I believe and the surgeon, though very experienced in sleeves, not so much in the Omega Loop. Have to decide soon though, my health is not improving and weight is not shifting - never has. So any ideas or suggestions will be gratefully accepted. BTW I live on the Gold Coast, Qld.
  9. Hiya I'm from Perth Australia booked for gastric bypass RNY on 25th October. I'm 31 6 ft 2 height and weigh 161kg.
  10. Hi Mimz. Thanks. I had the follow up appt yesterday and yes, am going ahead with the bypass. Probably November as I'm too busy with work till then.
  11. Hi There, Nice to see some Aussie voices on this site. I am due to have my band removed on 10 July for revision to Rny scheduled for October. (The mandatory 3 month wait with my Dr). I had around 4 yrs of success keeping weight off with the band and was down to around 85kg from original 145kg. Unfortunately I developed esophigal issues (too much vomiting I suspect) and ended up having all Fluid removed from my band. Now I'm back to my pre band starting weight and feeling incredibly depressed about it - can't wait until Oct but very scared all at the same time. Would love to hear from others especially anyone in syd - what doctor / clinics are u going to.

    Not enough vitamins?

My doctor follows the ASMBS guidelines and tends to be very cautious.I was already taking Biotin because I am menopausal. I currently take the multi, Calcium citrate+D, D3, B12 sublingual. I didn't have to take the Iron. I just got back my 3 mths blood work and everything was fine except my B12 was a little high. Not everyone takes these because not every doctor follows the ASMBS guidelines. From what I understand it's questionable as to whether sleeve experience the same absorption issues as bypass patients and really need those supplements.

    Having second thoughts

I get what you're feeling, I freaked out off and on too. I am also basically "just plain overweight" although i did find out that I have MINOR sleep apnea, but I only need a mouth guard not a CPAP for it. And I have several friends and my own mom who have had the bypass. My mom had the bypass 12 years ago, and she has had to have to do B12 shots, iron transfusions, has had all sorts of stuff happen, BUT that was 12 years ago, and it was a bypass, not a sleeve. I said I would NEVER , EVER do WLS, but here I am, one week post op with my sleeve. my mom has told me (many times) not to mourn for food, yes you can have a bite of a cookie, BUT is it worth it when it comes down to it? Food is fuel, I keep telling myself that. I have to cook for my family, I'm still in liquids, I want what they have, but I want better self esteem, a longer life expectancy and smaller clothes more. Some will fail, but some will succeed and be here years from now rocking an awesome picture. I know a lady who had a bypass 2 years ago and now she is heavier than before. If you want this, you will succeed. 12 years out and my mom has gained 20, but she got down so low she looked sick. You can do it!
  14. My BMI was 38 when I started with my surgeon. He was willing to do either surgery on me, it was my choice. If I had been diabetic vs. pre-diabetic, this would not have been the case. But with my BMI and health history, he said either procedure would be fine for me. My reasons for choosing the lapband are listed below. There is a list of reasons to pick bypass and also lists of reasons to not choose either. You have to decide which list is more powerful. 1. Hubby did not support gastric bypass, was much more comfy with the idea of the band. 2. That rubbed off on me as well. The bypass re-routes your innards and totally scrambles things up. Lapband doesn't. 3. If food gets stuck, band can be unfilled and food passes. With bypass, they must go down the throat and remove it. 4. Should I become ill and need more nutrition, band can be unfilled. 5. Weight loss is slower at first than bypass. I think this lessens the questions from people about your weight loss. Slow and steady is the way I want it. 6. I am in control of my restriction, if there is too much, I ask for an unfill, too litte, I ask for a fill. With bypass, what you have is what you have. I did not do any research into the Sleeve procedure, thus cannot speak to that. Denise

    How To Make This Decision?

I had my revision on September 10th. Besides all of the weight loss issues you have, I do believe that the band is NOT forever and sooner or later you will have to get it removed. So what would you do? I will bet that without the band you will have a significant increase in hunger and most likely food intake. I say go with the sleeve, remove your band(keep for a souvenir) and see what happens with the sleeve, all you have to lose is weight!
  16. I selected the lapband because: 1) My husband had gastric bypass in August and has lost 95 lbs, BUT it took him a long time to recover - probably a good six weeks. There were times he was sooo sick. The idea of actually having your parts cut and rerouted just werent for me. 2) The cost of the gastric bypass for my hubby was around $35,000 which was covered by insurance. The cost of my lapband is around $14,000 which is NOT covered by insurance. 3) I do not have 6 - 8 weeks that I can miss for work. 1 - 2 weeks is about all I can take off due to workload. BTW, your BMI is not all that high which would be another reason I would select the lapband. Hope this helps!

    Initial History

How did a former athlete who was 9% body fat in college get to this point? Well I was born with a bad heart valve that wore out faster than my body did. In my early 40s suddenly I was gasping for breath, by my late 40s I was type 2 diabetic, at 50 I had surgery for diverticulitus and lost 4" of my colon which slowed me down more. At 52 I had open heart surgery where they replaced the valve and found a aneurysm which would have killed me. However, I came out of this unable to lift weights, play softball or baseball, with a right arm and shoulder with nerve damage in it and a bad knee and hip. Then the meds quit controlling my diabetes, the new meds added weight and now it is out of control, I have nerve damage in my feet and my wife has to look at them every night to make sure I don't wind up with an infection. I was approved as a metabolic Weight Loss Patient on the first go around. I am now on my second doctor because the staff of the first one frankly was incompetent. I was lied to when they told me that they had filed FMLA, and I was pre-approved by insurance, they hadnt submitted either one of them. So being the analyst that I am I checked and found out everything. Added to that the hospital that they wanted to have the surgery in didnt have the best reputation. I should have had the surgery two months ago to keep nerve damage to a minimum. I am very nervous, from my major surgeries I live with pain every day. I was told that while they can do the sleeve that the results are better with bypass. However, the horror stories with malabsorption worry me. I am doing this to be able to have a life again not just to trade one set of issues for a whole other set. So any feedback is appreciated.

Hi Rena Welcome to LBT, you have come to the right place to see success, there are many many successful bandsters here, there is a before and after pictures thread you can view to see first hand. I too researched the band vs the bypass and there was no way I could do the bypass, Iam so happy with my decision to get the band. 13 months ago I was 91 pounds heavier and in a size 22, I am happy to say Iam now in a size 10 and doing things with my husband and 3 boys I have not done in years. I have my life back . I wish you the best, please keep us posted as to your progress and when you will be banded and please keep coming here to get your support and any questions you need answered here. This is a great group of caring, knowledgable & supportive people here. Good Luck

MY COMMENTS ARE IN ALL CAPS I can't decide between lap-band and gastric bypass. BOTH SURGERIES REQUIRE THE SAME TYPE OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION TO BE A SUCCESS. I am 28 years old and I weigh 440 pounds. MY STARTING WEIGHT WAS 570 POUNDS I have seen two surgeons already. The first one said lap-band would be great for me. I would lose the weight and still be able to have kids. THAT'S TRUE. The second surgeon pushed gastric bypass. He said b/c I am so overweight that I would lose more weight by doing gastric. THAT IS A COMMON FALLACY. He also told me that since lap-band is a new procedure, there is not much research on the matter. THAT, HOWEVER, IS A FLAT-OUT LIE. THE LAP-BAND IS NOT A NEW PROCEDURE. IT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS IN EUROPE, AND THE LAP-BAND IS AN FDA-APPROVED DEVICE. THE FDA DOES NOT APPROVE EXPERIMENTAL DEVICES. He claims that all bands will have to be replaced in 10-15 years. THAT IS ALSO A FLAT-OUT LIE. INAMED, THE MAKER OF THE BAND, TELLS SURGEONS TO INFORM THEIR PATIENTS THAT THE BAND IS A PERMANENT IMPLANT. Has anyone else heard this? Also, his nurse said that they will not be able to access the port to fill the lap-band for someone my size. OK, THAT'S THREE LIES AND THEY'RE OUT. I WEIGHED FAR MORE THAN YOU DO, AND GETTING A FILL HAS NEVER BEEN AN ISSUE. She said that they do not make 8-12 inch needles to fill the band. First of all, I thought the port was placed in the area under my rib cage. THAT IS EXACTLY WHERE MINE IS. I don't have 8-12 inches of fat there. Also, the second surgeon said that 54% of severe morbid ob. patients that get lap-band end up getting gastric bypass. HE'S A LIAR, WE ALREADY ESTABLISHED THAT, BUT IF YOU EVER WANT TO DEAL WITH THIS PERSON AGAIN, I WANT YOU TO ASK HIM WHERE HE GOT THAT STATISTIC. INAMED STATES THAT LESS THAN 3% OF ALL LAP-BANDS ARE REMOVED FOR ALL REASONS COMBINED, SO EITHER THIS GUY OR INAMED IS LYING. I am just very confused on what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated HERE'S MY ADVICE: NEVER TRUST A DOCTOR WHO LIES.

Dear Cajun Cutie, I think you should go for the gastric bypass. The only question I have is if you could still have kids. I would think you could. You might have to try to eat more often while you're pregnant and take some liquid supplements. I am 33 and I am approaching my second "bandiversary". It has been a long haul! I am on my second band. The first one slipped. I had it replaced because I was scared of gaining the weight back. I said I would do it all over again and I did. I live every day in fear of my second band slipping. There are so many issues with the band. The adjustments aren't bad physically, but they have taken a big toll on me emotionally. It is so easy to get upset if you don't get the restriction you're hoping for and if it is too tight you are miserable and have to make another tip back to the doctor to get it loosened. Depending on where you live, that could mean a plane ride. I drive three hours to Dallas to get my adjustments. It's also expensive if your insurance doesn't pay. The adjustments can be anywhere from $150 - $600! People up North that have less fill doctors usually pay much more. I have already spent more than it would have cost me to get a gastric bypass, but I was just barely big enough to get the lap band. I went to Mexico for the first one and I gained 7 or 8 pounds before my surgery date to get my BMI up between 33 and 34. You are so young and I agree that you should have a surgery. I have a friend that had gastric bypass and she has had much less of a hassle after the surgery. There are no fills to deal with. I know that there are lots of risks, but it's just my opinion that gastric bypass might be better. I am sure plenty of people will disagree with me and I do think the band is great, but if I had been large enough and insurance had paid, I would have gone with gastric bypass. Good luck! I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have!

CajunCutie, I am in the same boat as you. I am 29 years old and my starting weight was 471. My Dr let me choose which surgery was the best fit for me and he supported my decision. He only stated that the weight would come off faster with the bypass. The time it takes for me to lose the weight isn't of the utmost importance to me. I didn't get this size in 12 months and I don't imagine it would do my body good to lose a bunch of weight that rapidly. My surgeon is a very respected surgeon in the Pacific Northwest and he never once voiced a concern with reaching the port...that just seems like scare tactics to me! I had my surgery on April 3rd and I have my first follow up on Wednesday, but I can truly already see a difference! On the pre op diet I got down to 453! I encourage you to contact me if you want more information on my journey! I am excited and would be willing to answer any questions that I can! Take good care!! Jennifer :clap2:
  23. I had the sleeve 9 years ago and now have to have the bypass due to GERD, hiatal hernia, esophogitis, and Cameron lesions. I have weight that I gained and need to lose and now I’m worried about not feeling full after the bypass.
  24. I've had both a sleeve and now a bypass. I am struggling with not overeating because there is no full feeling with my RNY. With my sleeve it was very clear when I should stop eating, but not with RNY. I am back to measuring portions.

    Happy One Month?

I'm around my 3 week mark and I have felt that way as well. So far I've been eating mashed potatoes and soup. Just about the only things I ENJOY eating. My mother had the gastric bypass about a year ago and she's been my rock through the entire process, keeps telling me everything will get better. Not to mention I have a FANTASTIC surgeon who is the sweetest man on the planet and is more than willing to help me through any rough spots. I hope you find some people who can help you through the same way I have. Good luck!!!
