Am I doing this right am I broken?
FutureSylph replied to It'sAlbright's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Absolutely normal. Just white-knuckle it through the first few weeks (I recommend trying various activities to distract yourself), and I practically guarantee that a month from now, you'll feel a lot different. -
Food Before and After Photos

Everyone posting their restaurant meals and all I can think is “I could make SO many meals for that price!” Anyway, this was dinner- homemade skin on mashed potatoes and a burger with mustard and Mayo and waaayyy too sweet pickles. No calorie tracking today but ate it all. That was before I prepped 7 meals for my kids for the next 3 days. I find it easier to meal prep for them so they aren’t constantly snacking or wondering what to eat over school breaks. yogurt parfaits with berries and homemade cranberry pecan granola egg and veggie sausage mini bagels with berries Korean beef bowls (veggie chicken nuggets for the vegetarian) with brown rice pasta salad with pepperoni and salami (hard boiled egg for the vegetarian) and berries cheese tortellini in homemade tomato sauce pasta salad with roasted chicken thighs (hard boiled eggs for the vegetarian) and leftover burgers with mashed potatoes and peaches. -

Five days ago you had major surgery. Give yourself time to heal. As others have said, the first few weeks suck, but it's not forever and you will in time eat normally. But while your stomach is healing, you have to soldier through the program and hit your protein, water and vitamins. If you need something that isn't sweet, try something umami like a miso soup which will count towards your fluid intake. The sweetness of protein shakes and water drove me nuts, but I managed to offset it in those early weeks with small amounts of savoury liquid soups and unsweetened matcha lattes made on protein fortified soy milk. It's not fun, but it's doable, and you'll be onto the solid phase in no time. -
Chips and salsa and bad eating day
doobie31 replied to Brittneykdelacruz's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Not the best decision in the world, obviously. But 3 at a time throughout the day - imagine what it would've been like before the surgery. The backstop worked and now you can get right back to work. And yes, the salsa isn't bad at all. As a newbie to this (one week post-op), this is actually a very encouraging story - thank you. -
Chips and salsa and bad eating day
Brittneykdelacruz posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ugh my first bad eating day. I am just under 2 months out I’ve been cleared for everything except a small handful of things like steak. ive tolerated things fine, everything is good. my uncle made some salsa and i had a couple chips and salsa and i was a gonner i couldnt get enough! I could only eat like 3 chips with salsa at a time. But throughout the day i kept going back for 3 more. it was so good. i didn’t actually eat any real food today. i had my two protein drinks i feel guilty and im still thinking about that salsa. i wish id gotten some protein chips instead 😕 im not here for any real reason but to vent. ive got to get some structure to my eating. I have a terrible habit of living off bites and not meals with nothing measured or weighed. anyways i just thought maybe some others may have began their journey in chaos and could share their stories of getting everything under control. -
Struggling hard 3 weeks out

No it’s not unusual for things to taste gross. Our taste buds can temporarily change after surgery. Things we enjoyed can suddenly taste awful & food we never liked can be delicious. Definitely try some soups. Soup seem to make you feel like your eating something more substantial. And warm liquids often are more soothing. I even used room temp or warm water to make up my shakes. Some meats can be hard to tolerate - chicken breast is the worst but others struggle with beef. I found minced meats the easiest to eat. I never understand the chew, chew, chew thing - it seems to make the meat dry & tasteless. Glad I wasn’t told to do it. Take small bites (a level teaspoon or less) & ensure the meat is very fall off the bone tender & moist. Use gravies & sauces. Yoghurt smoothies helped me reach my fluid & protein goals. Blend up a high protein yoghurt with milk to a thin easy to drink consistency. You may be in a bit of a vicious circle at the moment too. You feel nauseous so you don’t eat or drink. But not eating or drinking can make you feel nauseous. You may be dehydrated too which is a concern. What colour is your pee? If it is a darker yellow, you’ll need to go to your local medical centre for a fluid transfusion. Try a different anti nausea med. Most are quite small tablets so you should be able to swallow them at three weeks. I’m sorry your surgeon hasn’t been more supportive. And yes, definitely see if you can find a dietician. -

Major life changing surgery was 5 days ago! Don’t be so hard on yourself! Your body needs to adjust. Right now it is saying “WTF?” It might take a few weeks. Once you can start eating more solid food it should get easier. -

Call your insurance to see if they have a dietitian you can talk to. I have Cigna & the dietitian really helped me. Your doctor should be giving you a script for Zoloft. If they don’t order meclezine 25mg from Amazon (cheapest place since the local stores only sell 12 pills in a bottle). You can get 3 bottles of 100 for $13.44. Some days I had to take the maximum to make it through, some days I didn’t have to take any. -
Stall out and depressed
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I dont measure myself but I have like small goal clothes I try on periodically that are always looser when I do. I do feel though my body hasn't changed much in fact the last 3 weeks....mostly I look in the mirror and still see a 340 lb girl. Physically though I feel a lot better, ive had a surplus of energy but with the bipolar depression, mentally i have been just wanting to sleep all day thr past week. But i get up and down off the ground with ease, can run without getting out of breath, can do stairs without getting out of breath, and my knee pain is a lot better although the past week it's been flaring up which is causing me pain and discomfort. I know Physically I'm a lot better off but when that number doesn't change, I get really low and filled with despair. I need to adjust my thinking and be more accepting that the journey isn't linear. I wish my brain wasn't so messed up. Gratitude and greatfulness is everything. I am trying so hard to internalize that. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -

The first few weeks are brutal, especially the parts that are all liquid. You'll get through it. But maybe try drinking warm broth (bone broth has more protein than regular broth), soups, etc. They're warm, which can make things easier, and can also help you get your protein in. -

the first couple weeks are the hardest. you just had major surgery. Need to heel up. Like Doobie said. you wont be on liquids forever. But you gotta follow the steps to make this surgery a success. For me the first month was the roughest. Then it got much easier -
I'm one week out today and only get a sting if I really move in the wrong way. But for the most part, the pain went away in 4-5 days. Every day was a huge improvement over the last. Day 1 was very painful. Hope you have the same positive experience.

Looking for friends, just starting my journey!

Welcome! I am also working on my journey. Been going on 5 months so far. I have all my procedures completed. I have 1 more dietician call and then hopefully they will call with my appointment with the surgeon. Then it'll be another 3 to 6 weeks before surgery. I've found this group to be very helpful. I know it's early, only 3 weeks after my bypass. But it's just been one struggle after another. I was increasing my ability to eat and drink for a little while, but I seem to be going backwards now. I can barely force myself to consume maybe 25oz of liquid and 4 bites of food a day. But I can't stand any of the protein I've tried. I found one shake that's okay but I can only tolerate about half of it and not every day. If I have a shake or half a yogurt, I can't eat for the rest of the day at all. I feel sick all the time. Nauseous, dizzy, lightheaded, weak. I use a transdermal multivitamin patch approved by my surgeon. I'm having big regrets. I know it will probably get better later but I feel like it won't ever get better if I'm only consuming water and a couple bites of food (usually yogurt, well chewed soft meat, or sugar free ice cream). I have my 1 month follow up next week. Doc is already mad I'm haven't found a way to meet my protein goals. I'm trying so hard it but it's so uncomfortable to eat drink, even water. I haven't been vomiting so I don't think there's any real problems but I can't survive like this.

They gave me a straw at the hospital lol. Used it then and still do (am 3.5+ years out). I actually found them very useful in the first couple weeks when i was too sore to sit up and take my sips. 🤷🏻♀️

Congrats! I am 2 weeks post op. So sore the first week but overall feeling good 😀

Got a surgery date! Sept 6th!
loli_lotus replied to loli_lotus's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was surprised it was so fast, I only had to do one intro zoom seminar, a zoom nutrition seminar, a psych eval, and some paperwork before they submitted it to my insurance. There was optional support group meetings, but the times were all when I was at work so I couldn't attend. Then it was about 3 weeks from the time I got approved to when they called to schedule my surgery. My theory is that I have a history of dieting and working with a dietitian on my medical records, so they didn't have me take 6 months of classes. I don't know if that's the reason but it's the only thing I can think of. I also did call them to bother them a few times. -
A few questions: 1. Have you taken measurements lately? Are you losing inches, but not pounds? 2. How do you physically feel? Do you have good energy? Are your joints sore? The reason I ask is because I am in the middle of a very stubborn stall right now. No matter what I do, the scale wants to revert to 273-275. It's annoying/depressing to eat right and go on a 5 mile walk and get back and have the scale still say 274. I want to hurl it through a window. But my clothes are looser than they have ever been. I told a close friend about the stall and he told me that I physically looked like I had busted it, that I had lost weight. I have more energy and find myself doing exercises that I physically could not have done a few weeks ago. If I look at all of the available evidence other than the scale, I am doing great. I've decided that if the scale doesn't accurately represent my progress, then the scale is wrong, not me.

Stall out and depressed
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
That's true, stalls are just terrible. I am feeling so disconnected from my weight loss journey because the number doesn't move every day or every two days anymore. I am going to contact my dietician if I don't get below 245 in 2 weeks or possibly next week if I choose to weigh myself again. Idk I need to come up with some strategy. I've lost 60 lbs post op about, 30 pre op. I do get nervous because my surgeon said you can expect to lose 100 lbs, what if this is it? Mann, I'd be upset. But yeah, I will be patient and keep making good decisions, getting my water in the best I can and protein. Thank you. -
Stall out and depressed
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
That definitely makes me want to contact them. That's interesting. I know there are these like "resets" you can do but I haven't heard much in the way of efficacy about them. I really do love my dietician, I should just send her a message. I guess lately I've felt disconnected from my bariatric journey because of the stall. Maybe the honeymoon phase is wearing off or I am just depressed. I don't know. What an odd experience but I'm glad I have a place here where we're all familiar with it. Thank you for your kind words. -
Stall out and depressed
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yeah, I guess this is my first real stall. None of them have lasted more than 2 weeks. I do find odd things like a pair of jeans that didn't fit me at 235 lbs in the past fit me now at 250. I don't understand that. The number can be so devious to me. I just wish it didn't make me depressed. I need to find a way to detach my value from my weight. I have been doing pretty heavy exercise, running again and lifting weights at the gym in fact this weight loss stall seemed to have started when I started the heavy exercise. Exercise has definitely increased my appetite. I'm in between a rock and a hard place because I want to be fit and build muscle but I don't want to feel hungry. I will call my dietician if this lasts longer than 2 more weeks. -

Reach out to your team. I have heard before that sometimes you need to increase your calories for a week or so and then drop back down to like reboot your metabolism. I only heard about it on these groups, but it does make sense to me so I would ask your team for pointers. Ask about the calorie increase and see what they say? They are the pros, we all are just here for support and opinions. Good luck and you will get through this! You are doing an amazing job!❤️ -
Stall out and depressed
catwoman7 replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
if you're eating 1000-1300 kcal/day and exercising and weigh 248-291 lbs, you're not in maintenance - you're stalling. Unfortunately, stalls are very common. And a 91 lb loss at this point is amazing. You're losing a lot faster than I did. Stick to your program, and quit weighing yourself so much. The weight is going to come off as long as you stick to your program, whether fast or slow. I was close to a year out before I'd lost as much weight as you have, and I continued losing for almost two years. Be patient and just stick to your plan.
