I was banded feb 6, 2012 and it took me about a month in a half to get rid of all the pain around the prot area. I relayy think it depends on each individual person. Some peoples bodys have a harder time accepting foreign objects than others..mine had a very hard time with it! Im ten weeks out and the only time i have trouble now is if i wear jeans that are to tight and push in on my port area. But its nothing extreme, its just uncomfortable. So i just dont wear those pants and dont have any problems lol! But like i said i think you will be fine before long. I was very concerned and even called my doctor multiple times asking if it was normal. He had me take tylenol ever 6 hours and that helped tremendously!

I have read the book. Some interesting points brought up. I tried going vegetarian, but I like my meat based protein (poultry and seafood). I am only 3 weeks post op, so when my diet is freed up a bit, I will do plant based protein as well....believe it or not, I am craving edemame (sp?). I believe "everything in moderation." I enjoy poultry or seafood over beef, which can get you burned at the "steak", living here in the midwest! Extremes can get us all in trouble. -
Hi everyone - I wonder if any of you have had problems fainting? I'm done about a 100 pounds and have fainted a few times in the last two weeks. The first three times were about a week and half ago,I had been sick, plus too tight and could not keep food or Fluid down. I went to the ER, had an unfill, some IV solution and was fine. Until today. I was fine all day, eating normally, drinking lots of Water and fainted at work. I'm going to the doctor tomorrow, but wanted to see if anyone has any thoughts or experiences? Thanks. Cynthia

I had an unpleasant experience this past Friday. Before I begin let me say that I am always thirsty at night: my mouth gets parched. And ever since I was a small child I have had to make many trips to the restroom at night. I have had a full work up on my bladder and kidneys due to a continual presence of red blood cells in my urine. Everything was fine and I am just one of those who will always throw out RBC's in my urine. That having been said, I received a fill (lost count as to how many I've had) over a week and a half ago. I am now at a whopping 4.75cc in a 4cc. I was concerned that it might be too tight but actually I can still eat solids but in small amounts. But I tend to have trouble sleeping sometimes and one area that is a problem is swallowing pills. If it's during the day, I just cut 'em up and have done with it. Well on Thursday night I woke up at 3am and knew it would be hard to get back to sleep. So I took a benadryl and lay back down to go to sleep. I woke up a short time later (30 min?) and I had inhaled Water into my lungs. I coughed and coughed for over an hour with water being produced. Eventually it stopped and I went to sleep. When I woke up I felt so terrible! Achey all over and dizzy. I could hardly sit still because of the pain (chest, back, neck, torso). I went to the ER and came to find out that my BP was 74/40. I was freezing all of a sudden and gratefully they triaged me in quickly. I required an IV for dehydration and toridol for the pain. The chest xrays show Fluid in my left lung. Diagnosis:aspiration pneumonia. Doc said this is worse than regular pneumonia because it's 'gram negative' and could kill you if not treated. So now I am barely taking a sip if my mouth is REALLY dry at night and I'm on antibiotics. I went out and bought liquid tylenol and liquid benadryl. But I am still feeling weak and feverish. Doctor said I should get an unfill. But I think that it's more about lying down and drinking fluids. Seems I would have figgered that out but it took this experience to really get my attention. Oh just for frosting on the cake, the next morning the scale had me up 4 POUNDS. Dang saline solution anyway lol.

I will be banded in 4 weeks. Are most of you able to eat salads and raw veggies, if chewed well? How many weeks post op should I wait before a salad could be attempted? Or are raw veggies and salads contraindicated? I would hate to give up salads................

I just had a fill about a week ago. I wonder if it's just decided to "kick in"? I didn't notice much of a difference right after the fill, but he only added .2 cc's, so I didn't think anything of it.

Thanks, I sent my DH to the store for the Gas-X just in case. I appreciate the info. You got a fill in four weeks, that is pretty quick. How many lbs have you lost so far? Did you lose when the band was empty? I have been trying to get in the liquids so far I think I'm doing great on that. I did buy this stuff called Whey 42 which is 42 gms of protein. It tastes pretty good, it comes in like a plastic bullet (grape, orange, etc.) you take the top off and drink it. It's clear and not very much (thanks for that). But it gets me 42 gms of protein in easily.

Granny, This is common so soon after surgery. You still have a lot of swelling. Most people should have their appetite back by about two weeks post-op. Be sure to keep sipping water so you don't get dehydrated and take in as much liquid protein as you can handle.

Im new here and hope to get scheduled for Surg in June with Dr. in Oregon. Anyone here have surgery in Oregon? I have three members of my family who had Gastric Bypass but I am self pay and the lap band seems so much safer and less expensive for Self payers. My question is anyone who previously ate large amounts before lap band, are you now satisfied with less and truly feel full sooner? Dumb question but I want to learn so much. Thanks in advance for any help.

I was banded on August 8th and wonder how others are doing and if they have experienced any of the same things. I am thrilled with my band and wouldn't trade it for anything. I have lost 41 pounds as of today and feel so much better already. 1) It seems at times that the band is tighter than others. 2) Sometimes when I am sitting it is hard for food to go down. Wonder if this is because my underwire hits about the same place as the band 3) I am almost never hungry! I forget to eat most of the time. This is a VERY different feeling for me! 4) Have already experienced the chest pain and having to throw up -- taught me not to eat things I shouldn't! 5) Hard to find things to eat when I am traveling a lot -- any suggestions Great things: 1) Knees and feet and ankles already feel better and allow me to walk 45 minutes five days a week -- couldn't do that before surgery without hurting the rest of the day and night 2) Blood pressure went from 150/92 to 120/72 as of last Wednesday. I don't have to go on blood pressure medicine 3) I don't think about food, because I always pretty much feel full all the time I am thankful to God for this opportunity and cannot wait to get the rest of this weight off. I wish you all the same success. Deby Dr. Barker, Dallas, TX 286/145 Goal 150

Hi everyone, I have lost 37 or 38 lbs, but most of that was the first month. It has really slowed down now. Maybe one lb. a week now if I'm lucky. I have had one fill of 2.0cc and will be going back this friday to get another fill. I hope it gives me some restriction.

I'm not sure what a mid band is, but so far the two fills I've had were super easy. They found it in one stick. But, my belly is 14 inches smaller than my rear end, so I don't have much fat to go through to get to the port. My friend "D" that got banded a week after me had major problems with her first fill. They stuck her several times and then had to get her a fluro done because they just couldn't find the port because her belly was just too big. My fill center has a 2-stick max. If they can't get it on the second stick they do a fluro or find somebody else who can do it. Good luck.

Hi, was banaded on 7/22/08, by Dr. Joseph Galloway in Mobile Al, The most wonderful surgeon I ever met. I had no complications from surgery, everything went well, went home the day after. Did my full liquids now onto soft foods, follow-up appt. was 7/31/08, had lost 15 lbs, Dr. Joe doesn't require a two week pre-op. So my surgery was on a Tues, my husband took me to New Orleans the week-end before surgery and we had all our fav foods, gumbo, muffellate, shrimp po' boys, jambalaya, it was wonderful. I can honestly say I don't even think of this as a diet, it just a new way of making food choices, for you better health. I don't go back for six weeks unless problems, but I feel great. Debe

That is exactly how I've had to view this operation. I call myself a serial dieter. I would go on all sorts of wild and wacky diets, fasts and alternative regimes and stick religiously to them for months only to have a weight loss of only 5 or 6 pounds, nothing like the losses I should have had. And I would inevitably fail because I would see all the effort and willpower I'd shown and not been rewarded by weight loss. So I'd say "screw this, I want to eat like a normal person" and within a week or so, that loss would be gone. I explained it to many people as a hike up Mount Everest. You get your supplies and Sherpas ready and say goodbye to everyone at base camp. You hike all day and feel you've done well and set up camp for the night. Next morning you wake up and there you are back at base camp again! Morning after morning you wake up after a successful climb and still find yourself maybe at the foot of the mountain, but still not getting anywhere. After a while, you give up as your Sherpas are getting tired (and secretly think that in the middle of the night you are moving them back!) and you feel like an idiot. With the band I feel that I haven't been allowed to ever give up. And although I still seem to be only making slow progress up that mountain where people who started after me are further up to the top, I can finally see that I am inching forward. I've never stuck to a regime before where it is so slow. But I feel that I don't have a choice and this is my last hope. I'm not letting go of it. Doddie and I are what Doddie calls Turtles. Slow and steady wins the race and we'll get there but won't compare ourselves to anyone else and will be happy in our own victories. Good luck tomorrow! Mary

June 18 Lap Band, now 2 weeks post surgery. Today I finally went to GNC to look for alternative protein shakes. The ones I had bought before were from NorthStar Weightloss (online) and were 8 oz/ 18g protein, BUT they made me soo bloated and gassy that I dreaded having to drink them. Today I bought GNC shakes that are 12 oz/ 35g protein and so far no bloat - I might actually like these. First week and a half, I stayed with liquids (water, vitamin water, jello, broth) and now I've switched to some stage 3 babyfood meals (not as bad as I thought), big people applesauce (to crush pills into), and mashed potatoes last night that were FABULOUS! I have no hunger but I am still very sore at 3 of the 6 incisions, especially the port one, and don't have much energy yet. I haven't taken naps in decades and I often want one now (might be lack of caffeine). First week I was down 5 lbs, not sure how much more yet. My first fill is scheduled for July 15 (just short of 4 weeks post-surgery). I'm a tad anxious as to what that will change...

My roommate and I went to Disney last year and she was on her 2 week pre-surgery diet. Those folks at Disney went above and beyond to accomodate her needs! One place made a chicken broth from scratch for her while we waited. They sure know how to make you feel like they care! They even have a special phone number to call if you are planning on visiting so that they can accomodate your needs at virtually any restaurant.

It is all up to you. I drank almost exclusively soda, but when I made the decision to do lap band I stopped. I have been off sodas for about four months. I had surgery a week ago. I don't miss the sodas. But it is as much a mind set as anything. The band is a tool not a cure all. You can do it if you want to.

I had my lap-band procedure done on Tuesday August 1st, which was less than two days ago. To make a long story short, the surgery went as planned in every way. Now recovery was a different story. Even though I told three different people within 30 minutes of surgery that I was allergic to Vicoden, what do you think they put into my IV directly after my surgery. VICODEN!!! I did not know about it till I woke up very sick late last night. My husband told me that I had a severe allergic reaction and it took just a minute for someone to realize what they had done. Apparently my face/neck swelled up and I had stopped breathing. I have no memory of this whatsoever. (I'm certainly glad about that). I ended up having to stay overnight so they could monitor me. I'm fine now, and thank god everything is ok. On a lighter note. I have EXTREME restriction. I can barely keep down two tablespoons of liquid. I was told it is probably swelling. Anyways, that's how it went. Thanks for listening.

Cindy, Some liquids/foods that our surgeons recommend are really a trial -N- error for each individual. Be careful with the V8 juice.. tomato's are SO acidic and could cause you discomfort. You may have NO problems with it, and then you may... try waiting a good week to test this one to your new tummy, k? Another good thing to keep on hand during this phase is s/f pop sickles. It gives you the chance to CHEW - which is something we start grieving for after 2 or 3 days of liquids only.

:mad:Don't feel bad. I do everything I am told. I exercise like crazy 6 days a week. I eat 1,000-1200 calories per day-protein first then veggies. I have only lost 5 lbs in the last 3 months. Frustrated? you can say that again!:tired

I am going to see my first set of Doctors next week and I am getting a bit nervous that they will find something wrong with me and I will not be able to get the band. I was wondering what kind of things would cause me not to qualify for the lap band. I have heard of so many conflicting things. and I know this should be a question for my surgeon but I forgot to ask. Also, did everyone have to have a stress test before getting their band. If so what is it like. Thanks so much. Amy
