Is there anything you wish you'd been told pre-op?
Frustr8 replied to Pippa1703's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Froufrou, they diagnosed me at 5 weeks with a strictured stoma opening in my pouch, 3 ulcers within there, 5 on the back wall of the jejuneum. I started trying to tell them at 2 weeks out something was wrong, I kept getting poo-pooed, I was swollen, I wasn't giving myself a chance to heal. They might have the fancy degrees, but I have lived in this body a LONG TIME. I have had 10 endoscopies , they kept trying to stretch it open. Zilch lasting effects. On November 28th, noticing the ulcerations were marching down my jejuneu m and heading towards my illium, to properally heal i needed 129 he protein, on my p.o. liquids I was nowhere near that so in went the PICC on the 29th, went from 24 hours daily, to 14, then 12, and was on 10 when they decided to remove it. It had become rather my buddy, I cried when they removed it, now I have to try to make up the calories by mouth, I'll try but doubtful it is going to go well. We shall just see! -
February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Honestly it just kinda “happened” a couple of days ago. I still can’t stomach more than 1/4 cup before noon, but by lunch and dinner, I’ve drank enough and I walk enough since I’ve gone back to work that it’s easier. I’m on my feet for my entire work shift - between 10-12 hours- so the food and water go better the longer I’m on my feet. -

I’m scheduled for bypass on 3/19 and I can’t wait! My highest weight was 320 lbs and I currently weigh 304 lbs. On Monday I have my pre-op class and I am pretty sure I will be starting my pre-op diet on Tuesday. -

I understand why you are angry. My husband is 19 years older than I am and my biggest fear is that he is going to die. My husband has diabetes and I find Dunkin' Donut wrappers in the back of his car and he buys junk and brings it in the house and eats unhealthy fried food when we go out. It's taken me MANY, many hours to explain what is healthy for an overweight 68 year old man with Diabetes to be eating. I wish he was interested in the surgery or reading nutrition information on food at the store, but it's just not going to happen right now. It's like flying. You have to secure your own oxygen mask first before you can help others. I realized, to have a happy marriage, I was going to have to lead the eating healthy movement by example, but that nagging him or "catching" him doing stuff that terrible for him is not going to make anything better. He has to want to get healthier on his own timeline. Good luck, I empathize.

I had my sleeve1/21/19. I have been working out since the 2nd day after surgery. Treadmill and stationary bike. I am 5 weeks out down 38lbs. I was 293 at Surgery, I am 255 today. Saw Surgeon Thursday he was ecstatic with my progress. Anyone who is negative about the process I just shut them out. Stalling for a little bit is normal. I did for a week. No complications at all. No nausea or vomiting either. THE EXERCISE SPEEDS UP THE WEIGHT LOSS!!! I am starting swimming today.

Well I had breast cancer at the age of 40 back in ‘09 and made the choice after all the chemo and radiation that since one of them tried to kill me, I was done with them. Before diagnosis, I was 230 pounds and still carrying G-cups. Since I had breast cancer, I got “free” reduction surgery and went from DDD to a B cup in a morning. 9 years later this is still the best decision I ever made, but the dramatic difference in my profile took some getting used to. I was actually heavier after chemo than before (gained 10 pounds) but now since I just got sleeved 3 weeks ago I do kinda wonder what’s going to happen to the lil ole Bs I have now. I’m kinda worried that they will completely disappear, but if they do I know I’ll still be so much healthier for it

Talking to Patients About Expectations
notmyname replied to summerset's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep - my doc consistently told me that the average weight loss is 60% EWL and that if I follow the plan, that's what I could expect. On another thread where people were discussing their goal weights - I said that this was mine and that I don't want to set myself up to feel like a failure. I'm pretty appreciative that my doc is conservative in his estimates. And some other WLS patients on these boards were kind of jerks about it. Saying that by setting of goal of average I was assuming I'd fail and still be obese and why was I even doing it. Even though I'm about 10 lbs from the 60% EWL at 4 months out, so likely to exceed that, I'm still thankful for my doc setting expectation. I'd rather under-promise and over-deliver. Because I know that if I did only achieve the average weight loss, and I'd expected/hoped for more, I would feel like a failure. And that would be very bad for my mental state. Plus, I had to judge whether or not to have surgery based on the most conservative outcomes - would I still be glad I went through it if I was still slightly obese? Yep - because I will still have lost a significant amount of weight that I couldn't have lost without this tool. And, overall, it will make me more healthy, even if I don't get to a "healthy" weight. -

No specification of what type of exercise? Regardless, 10 days would rule water based activities, I assume your incisions haven't healed yet? Also you wouldn't want to extend/stretch out your torso with wounds as well as stomach still healing. I would keep it simple for a few weeks. Walking...with perhaps some exercise bike if you have one. You aren't getting much nutrition just yet go gentle/easy until you are consuming more. I would save the gym/weights training for about five to six weeks out.

Just got the ok to work out from my surgeon today. I am still having pain from surgery. I am only 10 days out of surgery. What are some good exercise to start with?

I am 10 days out of surgery and I am drinking about 80-90oz of water a day. How much water are you able to keep down after surgery?

Any Dr in Dallas-Fort Worth area who does lap bands still?
Jennet replied to KarenLR75's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Before you begin looking for a doctor you need to find out if your insurance will pay for the lap band unless you are self-pay. Some will only pay for their removal but not placement. If they do pay for it you can probably call the nearest major hospital and inquire about their bariatric surgeons and contact them to find out if they place the band. I just had my band removed after 10 years and my bariatric surgeon said he hasn't done a band in 3 years. All that being said, if you have other medical problems these are best addressed by an experienced surgeon. And the band is promoted as only helping you to lose 50% of your excess weight. So, if you are say 150 lbs overweight then it would help you to lose about 75 lbs. And your surgeon has to be very adept with the fills as very small amounts put in can make a big difference (good or bad). Unlike other surgeries it requires more follow-up. -
6 month post-op weight loss
brittmarr1 replied to NotActive1234's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m doing ok with the sleeve. I was supposed to have bypass but when the surgeon got in there my small intestine was too short to do the bypass. But I am actually really happy with the sleeve. I’m losing weight slower but I’m not sick like a lot of the bypass people. I can believe anyone lost 125 lbs in 6 months I’ll be happy with 10 lbs a month. Good luck with your decision! Oh I lost 45 in 4 1/2 months. -
I just want to cry. Scratch that, i have cried. Today is 4 months since surgery (sort of, since I had surgery 10/29). I had a great first two months. Felt good, everything was going smoothly. Then the acid reflux started. A bit at first, then worse, even on 2 Nexium a day. OK, I could handle that. Then, about a month ago, the nausea started. I just can't deal with it. Seems to be getting worse every day. I feel worse now than I ever did before surgery. I can eat less now than when I started on solid foods. This is the first time I haven't been able to hit my protein goals since day 3 after surgery. I even have trouble getting in all of my liquids because I can't drink for forever after eating (maybe 1.5-2 hours). And I have to eat All.The.Time because I can eat so little at a time now. I'm doing my best, but the nurse is starting to worry they need to put in a PICC line to get fluids/nutrition in (luckily, she told me today she doesn't think that is necessary yet. Had an upper GI. They found a hernia, but saw no GERD. I got a hold of my doc's nurse. She'd talked to my doc. They don't really know what is causing it. She said they could do an endoscopy, but that he thinks he won't really find anything new. And he doesn't want to repair the hernia (again) until I lose more weight. Doc apparently wants to revise to bypass. But, for a number of reasons, I don't. Particularly since they don't really know what's wrong and can't tell me the bypass will help. I mean, I can barely eat now - and if bypass doesn't fix it I'll be even more malnourished than I am now. So, for now, he's prescribed a different reflux med, given me anti-nausea meds, and OK'ed me to lower my protein goals (protein supplements REALLY make me sick). my nurse keeps telling me that this isn't the rest of my life and they'll figure it out. But, I'm still worried and frustrated and sick as a dog. I'm not really looking for suggestions, or reasons I'm wrong not to want the bypass. My two close friends are having family emergencies and I don't want to burden them now. So I just need a space to let it out. Thanks. And really glad I have an appointment with my therapist on Tuesday.

I’ve been reading here for a while and finally signed up today. I had my sleeve done on Monday 2/25/19, spent one night in the hospital and was released the following day. Recovery has been fine, haven’t had much pain, etc. I started “stage two” foods yesterday (farina, strained cream of soups, etc.) and that’s been fine. I just had a question if anyone else had the big dent in their stomach after their surgery? It’s right below the largest hole, which is right above my belly button. I’ve also started getting a weird sensation in that area earlier today, kind of like a bubbling sensation when I bend over or lean back. It’s not painful, it’s just..odd. Thought maybe it was gas, not sure. Saw my doctor for my first post op appointment yesterday and he said I’m doing well. Thank you for any answers.

Life Changing Decision
Catherine Wible replied to elegant1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor is so busy, it took 6 months to get a date and then the date was 3 months away. I have to say though, it was worth the wait! I am only 10 days out, and I am doing great. No pain that a couple of Tylenol couldn't handle, no nausea, and I am down 15 pounds since surgery. -
Hi there...I did not have a pre-op diet either, I just could not have any food after 10:00 pm the night before surgery. Every team is different in their requirements. Just keep asking your doctor questions for your concerns, you said he has good reviews but is lacking in communication so trust him and ask all the questions that you need to. You will be just fine, follow your plan. Congratulations on your up coming surgery and I wish you all the best!

So I had surgery 10 days ago. We have a scheduled trip at 4.5 weeks post op. It includes a day at an amusement park and the beach. I am guessing I wont get into the ocean past my knees which is fine and I wont do any roller coaster rides etc. My husband is worried I wont be able to eat, will get dehydrated etc and wants to cancel. How hard is it to find and eat soft foods when out and about? The thing that worries me is trying a new fish etc for the first time at a restaurant. I know I can take shakes with me and have yogurt and feel safe with that so far.
