Told today No Bypass must be sleeve
New&Improved replied to Draven298's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Find someone else I think he is making excuses he is not confident in the bypass... -
Im just a bypass newbie and havnt had a drink yet, but I smelled a glass of rosé when my husband and friend were drinking. It smelled wonderful! I couldnt drink it, but the smell was enough. I think I'll have to start seeing if I can find some good alcohol-free wines. In other words...an adventure begins! PS. I tried coffee as well but it made my pouch really acidic.

Back story is that 2 years ago, I started the process for weight loss surgery and the Dr. I saw told me that he believed that my best option was bypass because it doesn't allow me to cheat as easily and so I got it in my head that anything else would be a failure for me. Due to life situations, I was not able to take the time out to focus on surgery and recovery so I had to put it all off. Now 2 years later I am starting the process again and with a new Dr. I have also developed stomach ulcers in the past two years so he told me today that he does not feel good doing the bypass when I already have ulcers and feels that the sleeve is the safest bet. In my head, it is still stuck that I am going to fail if I don't have the bypass. I don't want to go in feeling like a failure already and since most of my research over the years has been on the bypass, I am looking for real life experience. So I guess what I need to know is did any of you feel this way going in and if so, have you been successful? Without the dumping, how do you detour your thought process to not eat certain foods. I guess I was relying on feeling bad enough eating certain foods that I would never want to touch them again. I want this so bad but I don't want to fail and I need a mind reset. Thanks for any advise

I have met a few people that have gotten revisions but most people i've met that got the sleeve are happy with it (but so are pretty much most of the people that have gotten the bypass too).

VITAMINS AFTER GASTRIC SLEEVE?????
TheJuice202 replied to CESILEYRAE's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well I got the bypass but I started Day 3 (which was my first day home). flinstones compete and celebrate chewables. I am thinking about those patches though. -
you'll be hard pressed to find a surgeon who'll place a lap band anymore. Too many complications with them - a lot of surgeons just stopped doing them. RNY (gastric bypass) and VSG (the sleeve) are the surgeries most people get now.
-
Didn't end up getting my 5/15 surgery (i'm a June bypasser instead (June 28th)).

I am a bypass myself, but anyone saying the sleeve is a "waste of time" in posts just needs to read the tons of sucess stories of sleevers here... they are pretty awesome. Don't let those random internet postings get into your head. (((Hugs))) You have a great tool now, and you can do as much as you want on this journey!!! Best wishes for lots of success.

I don't know why people are saying this (do they really? never saw this). However, there are quite a few that get conversions to bypass because of reflux complications.

My dr doesn’t do bypass anymore so sleeve was only option. I was only uncomfortable the first day. I wouldn’t even call it pain. Only took what pain med they gave me in the hospital. Took Tylenol once home. I’ve had two previous surgeries (gall bladder and hysterectomy) and this was easiest by far. I still had hunger for the first few weeks until I started on more dense food. Then the restriction really kicked in and I don’t really get too hungry anymore. I’m almost 7 months out and I’ve lost 75 lbs. I’m very pleased overall. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I had the sleeve 11 months ago. I reached my goal weight and then lost an additional 15 pounds. I have 3 friends that all decided to get the bypass and all three still struggle to get to their goal weight. But the surgery isn't the only difference between us. They get doctored up coffees at Starbucks. One still eats rice multiple times a week and has no plans to stop. I don't have an exact copy of the food logs but I do see what they post on Facebook occasionally for meals and its definitely not the kind of diet I'm following. Both surgeries should be used as TOOLS to help you establish a healthier lifestyle. If you use it as the tool it is and follow a healthy diet you should be able to lose the weight you want with either surgery.

Look up the studies. The rate of conversion is fairly low. It might just look high here because more people who post are looking for support with problems than are here chatting years later about having a smooth experience. Here's one from patients in New York. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29496440 Rate of revision/conversion was 26.0% for band, 9.8% for sleeve, and 4.9% for bypass.

Hi there I am 2 months post sleeve op and have suffered terrible acid reflux since day 1. I have seen consultant today and he has suggested conversion to bypass. Has anyone else had conversion and did you find it better Thanks

Hi there new to here. I am 2 weeks post sleeve op. I had a few problems but they seem to be getting better. I have read numerous conversations on here that say basically the sleeve is a waste of tim and bypass is the way to go. Has anyone had success with sleeve and found it a good choice? Hope I didnt make the wrong choice.

Found this- I always order children’s portions anyway. So far no one has pushed back. Now I know why I have my card! https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2012/10/09/162563213/doctor-approved-discounts-for-gastric-bypass-patients-at-the-buffet -
Surgery on Monday -- really nervous
ChristineSO posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was very excited about this surgery until a couple of days ago when I read about post-gastric bypass hypoglycemia. That lead to me reading about more complications post surgery. Last Friday, I was so excited and couldn't wait thinking only positive things would come of this. Now I am pretty scared and wondering if I'm doing the right thing. I weighed 274 going into my first appointment and am now 264 as of this morning. Over the recent years, I've developed sleep apnea and just found out I have diabetes. This surgery is the better choice for me -- I know that. I'm just scared. Cheer me up? -
I had a Vsg but personally know people that had bypass. From what I have seen the folks that have had bypass recover a little easier plus they tend to lose a bit more weight. I chose the Vsg because I was not comfortable having an inaccessible part of my stomach left in my body. Plus I was not comfortable with the malabsorption aspect if rny. Nothing gets removed with rny so it makes sense that recovery may be a bit easier. In the end it comes down to which one you are more comfortable with. Good luck and do keep us posted.

Sorry to hear you when through so much trouble in my mind I think RNY bypass is more restrictive and has better long term numbers
-
I can only speak for vsg, asthis is the procedure I had. My recovery was not easy. I had a hard time getting fluids in. I had fluids 2x to help me along my recovery. The pain was just awful for about 10 days, but thank God for the pain medication. I have no hunger like before surgery. I do however get an ache in my stomach, but it doesn't last long and I'm not sure if it's related to hunger. I am 4.5 months post-op and still have a good amount of restriction. I can eat about a cup of food now and can tolerate almost all foods. I however try and eat protein first before vegetables and fruit. I find it can be a slippery slope, because I'm afraid I could probably graze every 3 hours, so I really have to be mindful of what I eat. I'm not sure if this is also true of gastric bypass? I said I would never do gastric bypass, but we will see what the future holds about a possible conversion. My Dr wanted me to do the DS for the best outcome to prevent my diabetes from returning. I'm not sure what the future holds, but I'm losing very slow right now and it concerns me. I hope you make the best choice for yourself! Good luck!

Everyone is so upset about not being able to eat regular food. Well regular and fat food got you where you are. Try something new. I’m 5 weeks post op bypass no pain. Blood sugar meds gone. Struggle mentally sure but no insulin no metformin is worth it! Try to relax and see the good.

❤20 Months Post Op❤

So sorry you have to have another surgery but glad they will fix whatever you need fixed! GERD is a b***h. That, among others, is why I chose to have bypass. I love reading your posts and seeing your pictures. You just seem to have all the right answers! Good luck with your pre-op diet and surgery. I know you will do well! -

Thanks for putting things into perspective, idawn! Now that I'm back home I'm sure I'll get back on track. I was just surprised at how much I am actually able to eat now as well as the kinds of food I can tolerate. My gastric bypass pouch has actually finally healed I suppose. Thank goodness for that. I loved the 3oz of steak. Up until this past week, it's only been chicken, fish, and hamburger (and a bit of pork chop). I'm also able to tolerate iceburg lettuce--at last!
