Well done, that equates to nearly 18lb a month which is pretty good, not slow at all, probably a high rate for that starting weight. Hair loss is quite common after weight loss surgery, you can read about it below. As long as you are reaching your nutritonal requirements it should be fine within three to six months (may be longer though). Some people use supplements for special shampoos/condiitoners. https://mercybariatrics.com.au/hair-loss-bariatric-surgery/#:~:text=The most common type of,percentage of hairs falling out.

Thank you so much for that information! How do you figure out plan exclusions? I work for a large bank and in their little healthcare “breakdown” it shows Bariatric surgery is covered (in-network with “distinguished centers”) covering 80% after co pay/out of pocket max. With that I am assuming that because the “brochure” states it’s covered that means that all three options my job provides for medical insurance will cover it. My job only lists very minimum criteria (must have BMI over 35, dietician, Psych, etc.) nothing specific, no exclusions listed. I would love to figure all of this stuff out BEFORE I pick an insurance company/plan, but when I call my jobs HR they tell me I have to contact the specific insurance company and tell them the plan & when I call the insurance companies they state the need a “group number” from my job and cannot give me any information until they have it. I can’t even look for specialists/surgeons because no one will even tell me who’s in network. It all just seems crazy to me that no one can tell me ANYTHING.. I feel lost and stumped as to where to look next… do I wait for open enrollment and HOPE that there may be an HR rep that can give me more info or do I have to blindly pick an insurance to go with and hope that their criteria/exclusions aren’t too crazy? Or would it be the same criteria/exclusions across the board because that’s what my job puts into place? I probably sound crazy but I just don’t seem to understand the whole process. It seems like my job, the insurance company AND my specialist/surgeon will all have their own criteria to go by… I just wish I could get all that information (or atleast some of it) before hand… thank you for listening and anymore insight would be much appreciated! Congrats with almost being done with your pre op journey!! That must be so exciting!!!! Are you getting the sleeve or bypass? I’ll be doing the bypass because I have GERD. I’m terrified of the endoscopy ( I hateeee needles) the best of luck on your continued journey!!!

Bariatric friendly pain relievers
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Not sure if you can use these with your job or not, but I use CBD oil and topical CBD products, lidocaine cream and tylenol. I really haven't had to use anything like this since my revision, except last week, I got blinded by the sun and missed a step and banged my knee on the concrete walkway, and I was three weeks post op revision at that point and started back at the gym the day before so I was a bit sore, then the fall on top of all of that... the CBD oil took the edge off of the pain. It's supposed to be really good for muscle recovery anyway. Maybe try one of those donut pillows that you sit on? I hope you feel better soon! -
Oh wow! That’s great. To be honest I used to have BCBS when I was pregnant and they royally messed up my claims so I am very hesitant of getting them again but I do wish for a smooth process! How did you know what their criteria was? Was it through your job that you had to figure that out or did you call BCBS and just let them know your plan name?? I’m trying to get a criteria and no one can give me specifics - they said they have to wait until I select the policy… but I have three insurance company options, I want to know BEFORE I choose, you know? Thank you for the information. This whole process is crazy haha

Rate of loss post-op
Arabesque replied to Jesse Liberty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That statistic, besides being an average, reflects bounce back weight gain which is pretty common, general diet complacency where after a couple of years we let things slide a bit, adjustments to the way you eat to better complement your lifestyle, general health, changes to medication, etc. It’s not the highest amount of weight you may lose but where you MAY end up at the three years point. It’s the same stat that says the a average weight loss at three years for sleeve is about 65% of the weight you have to lose. The most I lost was 43.8kgs (141%) . Then I settled at around 42kg (135%). Now at three years it’s 40 (129% - damn HRT & I had to up my protein intake.) Yes, my gain is minimal & I lost a lot more then the stats suggested but others do experience less loss & greater gains. Treat averages (stats) & BMIs for that matter as a guide only not a hard & fast rule. They just give you a bit of an idea of what might happen. -
I was approved for surgery, much sooner than expected
AgentCherryZero posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi, I'm new here. I joined this forum with the expectation that my surgery was going to be about 10 months from now. I went to the surgeon today and I'm looking at two to three months from now. Which yay?!? I don't have to think about the what if's as long, but now I'm overly anxious about "holy crap, it's so soon I don't have time to prepare". I'm having the bypass which is what I went into the appointment expecting him to say I would need. I'm just nervous and jumping in head first reading all the posts. Thanks for sharing your stories, I didn't want to read them while being a creeper and not sharing mine. -

Agree with others. Everyone is different and your body does not work linearly. I mean, I'm no where near goal and I have slowed to a crawl the past two to three months, without changing my eating (might be all the exercise, but hard to know, I'm just keeping on keeping on). Other people with my same stats could be dropping 2 or 3 times the weight I am - until their bodies decide not to and stop. It's not predictable and I find comparing myself to others does nothing helpful or useful. -
Food Before and After Photos
GreenTealael replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Can I say I’m tired of all things vegan? Is that allowed? No? It has become increasingly difficult to cook three types of meals so I’m going to stop, again. 🤣 Sorry about the job but you’re right, their loss. -
Has anyone else developed this after surgery? I will be at three years in September and my symptoms are worsening. I wear a monitor but find that I am crashing more and more. Yesterday my glucose dropped to 301 They are sending me to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St Lewis to evaluate my pancreas and are saying I might have to have part of it removed.

4 years post VSG and still not hungry
Arabesque replied to Saxons's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m three years out & I have times I’m not hungry. Recently had a month of being hungry not hungry but I’m a little sadly back to my usual eating. I go out often & order an entree or a main depending on the restaurant. An entree is about the right serving size for me & when I have a main I regularly only eat a bit more than half. (I’m not afraid to ask for a doggy bag.) I am aware that I’m more likely to get the foamies or for my restriction to kick in when I dine out. I think a lot of it is a psychological thing for me though: I consciously or subconsciously get anxious it might happen & so it does. Doesn’t stop me going out though. I wonder if some of your reactions are similar - psychological - especially as there doesn’t appear to be a physical reason as yet??? When my dad had a mega chemo dose to wipe out his immune system before undertaking stem cell replacement, he developed psychologically induced nausea & vomiting. His haematologist explained it as being a learnt behavioural response. He had had such terrible nausea & vomiting his mind & body expected he’d always be nauseous & vomit. Apparently it’s a bit like people continuing to experience sea legs when they get back on dry land & they bounce & sway about as the mind & body think they’re still on a boat & need to move with the waves. (I’ve experienced that - it’s a really strange feeling.) It’s just a thought. Our mind & bodies can react in many weird & unexpected ways. I hope this can be sorted out for you soon. Where in Queensland are you? -
Diet right after surgery?
Karissa1790 replied to KaitlynAnne93's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I recently got the gastric sleeve this past Monday. The night in the hospital I was allowed ice chips. The following day I had beef broth and sugar free jello and sugar free crystal light. Once I was home it was clear broths and sugar free Gatorade for the first three days. I am now able to have Greek yogurt’s and protein shake and cream soup. -
Out of pocket payment before Insurance??
AmandaD. replied to AmandaD.'s topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That is crazy. This is the first I am hearing of a “max lifetime benefit” for Bariatric - I’ll have to look into that. I still have time I have three options for insurance. BCBS is one of them but I’ve had them before and they were honestly a complete nightmare constantly messing up claims from a pregnancy, so I won’t go with them anymore haha. That also makes it seem like your surgery is crazy expensive lol which procedure are you getting done? My OOP max across the board is 3000 so I’m hoping that’s all I have to pay out of pocket. Hopefully you only end up paying $400! This whole process seems stressful, and long. Hoping to get my surgery summer on 2023! Good luck in your adventure! -
I completely agree that I think the protein shakes I've tried so far have been pretty disgusting. I have been drinking chicken broth for the three days, and that goes down the best. Water on its own makes a bit nauseous at times. I'm having fantasies of greek yoghurt and oats that I will (hopefullyI be allowed to have next week.

Sleeve or Bypass Regrets?
kristieshannon replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Zero regrets. I’ll be three years out from my VSG next week. I’ve met my goal and maintained it. I’m happy & healthy. This was life changing. I only wish I’d done it sooner. -
Hi everyone. I hope I’m posting this in the correct place. I just wanted to get some insight or any prior experience. I had RNY on 9/9/13. Down from 311 pounds to between 170-180 now for maintenance. Prior to surgery, I was on Metformin, Protonix, and HCTZ. I was off all three meds within three months of surgery. Surgically, I had to have my appendix out and gallbladder removed many years ago, so neither are causing my current issues. About a month ago, I started getting wicked heartburn and reflux. My appetite is diminished. No vomiting, but zero desire to eat. I have cut out spicy foods, I’m not a smoker or tobacco user, and I do not drink alcohol. I’m 38 years old and in otherwise good health. I go to the gym 3-4 times a week. I have tried OTC Omeprazole, baking soda, Tums, and all the antacids. I started drinking decaffeinated chamomile tea in the morning as well. Does anyone have experience with heartburn, GERD, etc. coming back many years after RNY? What ended up being the cause? I have my annual followup with my bariatric surgeon on October 11, but I’m wondering if I should move the appointment up. Thank you in advance for any insight!

I gained 3 lbs one month post op
Mphthegreat posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my first month I went from 300 to 250lbs. Once I finally made it past the three week (everything makes me sick phase)… I actilually began eating a little later than recommended because I couldn’t keep anything down. I’m now 1 1/2 months post op… I’ve finally gained my energy back and am working out but I not only stalled but gained 3 lbs my mom feels like I shouldn’t get down about it or obsess about it but has this happened to anyone else? -
What do you do instead of eating?!
Dogmom68 replied to Lornapc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I used to have active hobbies like gardening but since I was diagnosed with arthritis in my spine (all over my body, really) I can’t do things I used to be able to do. I was very depressed for a long time because I had to leave my job I loved because of all the pain. That was three years ago and since then I’ve found other things to do that make me happy. I go to the pool and just walk around in the waist deep water to move my legs (I had a hip replacement recently.) I have gotten really good at needlework/ cross-stitching and have completed some beautiful projects. It took awhile to change my mindset and now I focus on my health and eating well. I’m able to focus on tracking my food which has allowed me to gain control over my eating/ calorie consumption. I’ve lost 80 lbs and I have 50 more to go. We all can do this!❤️ -
I had a blood test as part of my pre surgical check (height, weight, ECG, etc.) three days before my surgery. I believe it was a pretty broad test (CBC, lipids, metabolic, nutrient, etc.). I remember they took several vials & they still do. This initial test formed the base line then for the subsequent post surgical blood tests.

Day 6 full liquid on
Arabesque replied to Foreverafter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same as @kcuster83. I could have eggs at the start of week 3 in puree stage. Just had to be runny scrambled eggs or boiled eggs mashed with Mayo. But, yes some people struggle with eggs to begin: they just don’t sit well or taste unpleasant. What does your plan say? PS - Congrats on your surgery. I had a lot of swelling too & then my back spasmed so I had three nights in hospital. I found warm drinks more soothing & easier to sip. -
Hey everyone! I’m a week post op! I had to stay an extra day in the hospital because the nursing staff wasn’t sure what I was supposed to be doing. Doing pretty well but I’m ready to move out of the liquid stage. I was up 11 pounds from my pre-surgery weight when I got home and still three pounds over today. I’m hoping I can have some puréed food soon. I’m over protein shakes!

August surgery buddies!
LookingForward22 replied to Connie88's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh my 21 days! I’m certainly not going to complain about 8 days - you just made this a whole lot easier on me. So far day 1 has been better than expected. After my 2nd (out of three) Fairlife shakes and about 12 oz of juice - I didn’t think I could take one more sweet sip, so I had some chicken broth. I welcomed the savory. I have one more shake, about 6 oz of juice and 15 oz of Water to go yet today. No hunger yet - but I think I’ve been to busy running to the potty (it’s a lot of liquids… lol) and focused on hitting my goals to think about it to much. I told my husband and kids - that if I can make it to day 3 without being cranky I think I can make it till Tuesday. But you making it through 21 day to get to “Goal” I’m inspired and extra motivated! -
Duodenal Switch Newly sleeved on 07/29/22. Had a three day hospital stay. I’m currently still on the full liquid diet. My post-op appointment is on 8/11/22. I am STRUGGLING with my water intake. I barely can get the protein shakes in now after surgery, before they tasted better. I find that no sugar applejuice does well with me though. But now zero sugar powerade tastes salty. Its alot of changes. Any ideas for how to get more water in? I feel a little dehydrated my lips are more dry now than before surgery. I hope At my appointment this week I can go to pureed foods. Luckily I havent had any vomit episodes except the day after surgery in the hospital. But any advice or tips would be appreciated for a fellow new sleever.

Curious to see what "tricks" anyone uses to get more exercise in. I recently started exercising again, and am really trying to get the ball rolling. I started the Couch to 5K program for running - I've done it in the past but never followed up so I'm trying again, starting week 3 tomorrow. Also started doing circuit training at Planet Fitness three times a week on the days when I'm not running. But the biggest thing is trying to get a lot of aerobic exercise in the form of the elliptical machine at Planet Fitness. It's boring but I found a way to "trick" myself into doing it for long periods of time. I bring my tablet and watch TV shows and movies and the time flies by. It also incentivizes me to go the gym because I decided I wouldn't watch anything at home, only at the gym, so now I want to go every day so I can catch up on my shows! I've been watching a series with hour long episodes so I've been doing an hour on the elliptical almost every day.

My general heart rate is low too three years out & I have low blood pressure. I was even asked if I was an athlete because my pulse was so slow when I was in hospital last year which was hilarious to me & my family & friends. I’ve spoken to my my surgeon’s colleague & my GP because I was concerned about potential bradycardia but they’re okay with it - guess it’s not low enough. 🤷🏻♀️ I think it all contributes to my fairly sudden drops in energy - race about & then nope need to stop right now. I bought a BP monitor & tracked & recorded my BP & pulse fir a few months. I’d would note what activities I had been doing if it was higher or lower then usual.

Any tips on recovering from surgery alone?
catwoman7 replied to lussa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it's highly doubtful you'll need a home health nurse. My husband took a week off to be home with me, and he ended up going back to work after three days. I just didn't need him. I mean, it was nice to have someone go get beverages and protein shakes for me, but I could have done it myself. it's also doubtful you'll need to take 4-6 weeks off. Most of us take two, but many have said they could have gone back earlier. I took three weeks off and definitely could have gone back after two - maybe even a little earlier. I had a desk job.
