For the past ten days, I have been experiencing constant dull nausea in my lower abdomen. It worsens when I eat (so I'm only getting about 400 calories a day) and sometimes I have to lay in bed because sitting and eating can increase the nausea. I messaged my bariatric surgeon last week and only heard back from his nurse on Monday. She was rather dismissive, saying that I might have the stomach flu and I should write again in a few days if I'm not feeling better. I also messaged my PCP who does not have a bariatric background, and she hypothesized that it might be heartburn (I don't think so -- I have no pain in my chest or upper abdomen) but said if the nausea continued, she would see me in her office. But again, she's not familiar with the surgery and possible complications, so might not know what tests to order. I spent time researching through Dr. Google and got worried about internal hernias, which could be life-threatening if left untreated. Apparently, sometimes the only symptom is mild nausea. Or maybe I have an ulcer. Am I worrying too much? Has anyone else had a long episode of nausea (lasting over a week) that resolved on its own? Or was from another cause? As you can see, I am already seeking proper medical advice, so only would like to hear anecdotal information and suggestions. Thanks.

Don't worry about calories yet. Focus on getting in your grams of Protein before you eat anything else! Sometimes you have to increase what you eat in order to lose weight. I know it sounds counterintuitive but it can be true. Maybe don't have the banana but have the nonfat cottage cheese instead. Possibly put in a few berries in the cottage cheese. I think berries would be better than a banana for a while. A little edamame would be a nice snack, too. Nice protein.

The best thing you can do for yourself is add more dense Protein to your meals. It may be time for you to increase and add some additional good protein and good carbs yo your diet. You are likely not getting enough at this point and running will use your stores and your body goes into starvation mode. Try adding some dense protein in like chicken, fish, pork, eggs, beef, cottage cheese. Also that dense protein will fill you up faster and keep you full longer. From your duet sample you are not getting enough protein heavy calories in. In between meals drink 8 oz. of milk, this also keeps that hunger at bay. Good luck!

TMI-- my period has gone missing! I am definitely not pregnant. But it's normally very much on schedule and it's about a week late now. I had it before my surgery (surgery date 1/3). I was on a liquid diet at that time, I feel like if I had it then, I should have it now. I've been following the doctors instructions, getting in 70-80 grams of protein and 54-64 oz of water a day. I'm eating around 700-800 calories a day. I don't feel like I'm starving myself. Anyone else experience no period after surgery?

Need motivation!
Armygalbonnie replied to Nursenia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and can have severe joint pain. I don't let it keep me from working out. Instead of walking, try the recumbent bike. It's the one where you sit down low in it and you don't have to bend your back in an unnatural position. Also, Water walking and aerobics is completely stress-free on your joints and believe it or not, burns a lot of calories. It can definitely be hard to get motivated to workout but once it becomes a part of your routine, you will find that you "crave" it. Also, by working out, you will burn more calories and get toned. I find when I work out, my clothes size drops quickly, even before I actually see the weight coming off the scale. Good luck! I hope you can adopt this new lifestyle. -
How many calories are you eating? Yes, the protein is important but so are carbs and calories for energy esp if you work out a lot. Check with your dr and/or nut.

It's been 6 months since my last fill and I felt like I was at a good point. I could eat more than necessary but wasn't hungry all the time which was the goal since I've been breastfeeding and need more calorie intake. I've done really well with my weight loss and around 15 pounds from my target weight. However, the last week or so I've been super tight. I've always been really tight in the morning and the other morning I made the mistake of having a (small) piece of bread. Well, it got stuck and the rest of the day I felt miserable. I've never felt the same since then either. Now, I can't get enough to eat and I'm hungry. I can only eat like 4-5 bites before discomfort sets in. Even drinking water needs to be done slowly. Before everyone jumps all over my case that I need to go to the doctor I can't. Right now I am in China and not anywhere close to my doctor. I've also been warned not to fly if my band is feeling any discomfort or it will only get worse. It will be another month before I return. So, I am looking for any advice or guidance (other than go to the doctor).

You did it, admitted it, and now.....get back to what you know! (A little tough love) Actually, I do have more than my allotted carbs occasionally to shock my body. It has helped me along my journey. When you do that, do you increase calories too? I'm stalled and trying to figure out if I need to shake up my diet. I'm 6 weeks out.

Can you pal up with a buddy to help you through bad times? Or see a therapist around your eating habits, who can support you to make lifelong changes? The first year is going to be when you lose the weight so the sooner you nip this in the bud the better. Do you take account of what you eat, write it down or use a tracker app? Are you having enough Protein/water etc? I have a Protein bar (choc flavoured) which gets me over the chocolate fix. Its very low carbs and about 200 calories so not too bad. I love them but my hubby thinks they taste like MDF, not that hes ever eaten MDF lol! You CAN do it !! Have faith in yourself and the lovely new tiny sleeve you have

....I am 4 weeks post op and I am barely able to get 300 calories in a day. I try and try but to no avail. How can you eat 800+ calories a day eating only 1/4 (if I am lucky) cups of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Is the secret grazing? -
So Do U Eat the Recommended 3 Meals A Day If
wickedme replied to speck's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The six meals, because there is so little to eat would make sense, especially to get in the 60 g of protein each day. I have no problem doing that pre banded, but I'm eating 1500 calories.. My dr. only wants his patients to eat 3 times a day,, it doesn't specify if the protein shakes in between as a snack, but says you can substitue the shake for other protein source.. -
Stalling helllllp
bettyb71 replied to Kitkat101484's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am in the same boat! I talked to my NUT yesterday but she really wasn't any help. I have been the same weight, the EXACT same weight for over a week. I am keeping it to 700 calories, I am getting all my protein in, hell, I have 2 boxes of frickin paczki straight from Hamtramik (very yummy and very fattening donuts for those that don't know) behind me and I am not even looking in the boxes. I feel like I should be rewarded for my good behavior, LOL. I am only 5 weeks out and started the stall at 3 weeks, even gaining 1.2 lbs at one point in the last 2 weeks. How do you gain weight at 700 calories?! I am getting frustrated, but my husband and NUT tell me everything is fine. Not sure what else I can do... -
if you can tolerate bread than a slice of bread shouldn't be a problem. whole wheat bread is good for you. vegetables have carbs so a little carb in the morning as bread, to me, is a okay. I like a egg on toast. I just don't use butter on my toast. I let the yolk moisten the bread. meals should be 300 to 400 calories each. you will be able to eat your bread and stay under those calories. my worst time of day for feeling hungry and sometimes helpless is at night. I have horrible brain hunger while watching prime time tv.

So we got Chinese food for dinner and I had shrimp egg foo young with 2 tablespoons of gravy. I weighed it and it came out to 166 calories in MFP. It had lots of grease (I blotted with paper towels like crazy) so this makes me nervous that MFP could be wrong. I ate it and tolerated it fine and it seemed like a good choice (according to MFP) as it is low calorie, high protein and low carb. I don't know, though. When I make an omelet there's never that much grease, What do you guys think? I already feel like a slow loser and I don't want to sabotage myself.

Feeling full
Arabesque replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could possibly reduce your protein since you’re in maintenance & it’s very filling & up your vegetable intake. Daily requirement in the US is 0.8g protein per kilo you weigh so you could reduce your intake to about 50g. But check with your surgeon & dietician first. (My dietician said I needed a little more because of my age so I work at 1-1.2g protein per kilo of weight.) I can eat more now than I did at 6 months & more than I did at 12 months. To get my calories in to maintain (about 1200+/-) I feel like I eat all day long. I snack about 4 times a day on dairy, fruit & multi/whole grains in addition to my three meals. I also still take ages to eat: 30-40+ mins for breakfast & dinner & about an hour for lunch but it does enable me to eat a little more. Are you still leaving time between when you eat & drink? Have you tried plant based proteins? I believe they can be easier to digest & may not upset you or fill you as much. I really think you need to have a conversation with your surgeon & then your dietician because you’ve been struggling so much. -
You won't be "full" anymore as you know it. Try and focus on being "satisfied". To do this you need the highest amount of protein for your buck. My bariatric center which is in our hospital sold me New Directions Protein Shakes but I think the Atkins Advantage brand at your local grocery store are a close alternative. Also, LOTS of water, tea, or other calorie free non-carbonated drinks in between keep you from feeling too hungry. I do still drink coffee also even though I have been recommended to be on a caffeine free diet as well, but that's my choice, not my advice!

Same here, I found the best thing for me was to buy a composition book, on the left side of the paper I've got Water, Protein, calories and sugar (that's what my dietician want me to track) and then in the right paper I write the times I eat, drink, or take medicine/vitamins... Writing how much and of course if the food did not sit well. It's old school but I find it really easy.... I'm eating basically the same things so far, three weeks out and in the soft food diets, so it's easy to do this right now.

to be banded 6/21 looking for advise for a newby to be
Papillon Princess replied to daddyzbumblebee@aol.com's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Kitty, Glad I can help (I do tend to have quite an opinion and do tend to lean towards my dr being one of the best...so take my advice as you'd like to. I don't mean it in a bad way or mean that you're wrong and I'm right! Everyone is different in what works for them. A few things...you said you got creamsicles and fudgesicles – check with your nutritionist on when and if you’re allowed to have these (even though they’re SF) they’re not a clear liquid, you would need to be on full liquids. Creamsicles and fudgesicles are also quite a bit higher in calories than SF popsicles. (Just a thought…it’s still up to you though). As far as the syrups, walmart and bed bath & beyond have sugar free snow cone mixes that are good in the blenders. (If you want a snowcone machine, go for it! I personally love my magic bullet and I can use it for lots of other stuff too!) I LOVE iced tea as well! I drink mine with truvia and it is so good! The truvia is quite sweet, so generally you won’t need as much as if you were using actual sugar. It is a little pricy but when you see how much you’ll actually use, it’s not too bad. Also if you didn’t know, crystal light has some REALLY yummy iced tea flavors (the regular is 99% decaf and the decaf is 99.9% decaf – so not much difference, regular should be okay). I love the lemon decaf iced tea by crystal light, it’s so good! Any type of stevia should be okay to try, but I do love truvia so I haven’t tried any others at this time. J The chewable Fiber is pretty good (IMO) I buy fiber choice (I’ve had 2 flavors – the orange is very good and there is also one for weight management and it’s strawberry flavored) Both of them are good. Amazon has some great deals on fiber choice if you find one you like. I get my Vitamins through Bariatric Choice, they have great prices and quite a variety of items. The liquid Tylenol isn’t that bad, they don’t have an “adult” option, just get the children’s Tylenol and calculate the dose of acetaminophen that you’ll need. I think I take 4-6 tsp of the children’s Tylenol (double check on my math for that…I use a pre measured thing and figured it out the other day). The bubble gum isn’t too bad. -
Hi, I had my band on Tuesday, and ever since then I am struggling to follow the post op liquid Protein diet. I am just not hungry, and the thought of the Protein drinks, shakes and Soup make me feel ill! I know I need to keep up with the diet to ensure I am getting some calories in, and all of the nutritional value, but I am stuggling to do this. This is making me a little light headed! Has anyone else had this problem, and if so have you any advice for me? Thanks, Jane

to be banded 6/21 looking for advise for a newby to be
Papillon Princess replied to daddyzbumblebee@aol.com's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Loly, You mentioned you're drinking milkshakes...I'm not trying to give medical advice but I hope your dr told you that you probably shouldn't be drinking milkshakes. High calorie drinks get right past the band and defeat the purpose. The Protein in the milkshakes does not even come close to outweighing the calories. I personally am not allowed any milk products (aside from fat free cottage cheese and some cheese added to my meat). If you are allowed milk products, I still wouldn't suggest a milkshake. If you want something of that consistency, try using your Protein powder with skim milk and some ice cubes. This will give a similar consistency to a milkshake. I'm not trying to be rude with this, but hoping that you have as much success as possible! Try not to drink your calories away. -
Everyone's plan is different, and I would recommend that you stick with whatever your plan states for you. If you are unaware, ask your surgeon or NUT and I'm sure they'll have an answer for you. For me, it was at about the 60-day mark when I had a few sips of wine. I didn't try to push it beyond that, and I don't drink very often at all. My nutritionist labels any alcohol the same as refined carbs -- "empty calories"...and they are just that. When you can't eat very much nutritious foods during the day, you learn very quickly to become stingy with the calories that you can consume, and so I try to opt for things that are nutritious and will actually feed my body. Alcohol just isn't one of those things, no matter how much I wished it was. I do believe that there are some very real antioxidant qualities in red wine though, so I will have a sip or two now and again, but only after I eat and only on special occasions...it's never really been a regular thing for me. But best advice would be to speak with your NUT/surgeon to your specific plan and be stingy with those calories! Make sure what you do consume is nutritious! Best of luck!

My doctor said it's not specifically something that can hurt you or mess your band up - it's just liquid calories. You can decide how worth it or not they are for you.

So Do U Eat the Recommended 3 Meals A Day If
luluc replied to speck's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
i eat 3 meals a day w/ 1 or 2 Snacks - just depends on my level of activity. the 2 days a wk i meet w/my trainer i add a Protein smoothie that day. i've played around w/my calories / carbs / protein for a while now when training hard - and i've found my Protein shake on those days helps me recover & sustain those workouts. keeping meals to 3 a day did nothing but stall my weightloss in the beginning...when i added a snack (healthy of course) or 2 a day - got my calories over 1000 .... i had the lbs steadily coming off...trial/error. what will work for one - won't for another.. -
Thanks for the suggestions - I had a post on here asking about not getting enough calories and that might be my issue. I typically have 400-500 calories a day and if I walk, I lose about 170 of those calories. I do get in a lot of water and about 80-90g of protein a day, so maybe it's the caloric intake. Having said that, for dinner I forced myself to eat 2oz of salmon, 2 tbls of rice and 2 tbls of veggies and it took me every bit of 50 mins to get it down. That's the largest meal I've had since surgery. According to my meal plan I'm supposed to have 6 tbls of applesauce right now but I can't even begin to try to put another bite in my mouth.
