Anyone out there still have their band from 08?
gowalking replied to sherry62's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Are you having issues with the band? I got mine three years ago and lost more pounds than what I currently weigh. I literally got a new lease on life since being banded and I am always concerned that the band will need removal for some reason so I often ask long time bandsters if they are having issues. Do you? And if yes, can you expand upon them so I can know some of the things to keep an eye out for? Thanks. -
I have had a lap band slip. After the slip, I started having heartburn and has difficulty eating foods that were normally easy to eat (string cheese, quest bars). I suggest getting a barium swallow done to get objective evidence of what is going on. When I first went in, the dr said to try to follow the rules better because I thought maybe I was talking bites that were too big or not chewing enough. A few weeks later my dr got a fluro machine and I did a swallow and found that the band had slipped. No horrible pains, just a lot of heartburn at night and difficulty eating food that should've gone down easily.

I'm also from Texas. Have had my initial consultation, did all but one of my preliminary tests (blood work, psych test, stress test) still haven't scheduled the sleep apnea test. I had my consultation about 2 weeks ago (seems like years) and am in process of getting my letter for the insurance company together and submitted. It seems that the insurance side of this takes the longest. I'm hanging in there, but anxious to get going!

Like shit, plateaus happen. I tend to plateau for months and months at a time, and trust me - there's no "sure fire" way to get it moving again. You just have to wait for your body to be ready. Most plateaus aren't plateaus, they're dieters/eaters slipping into old habits and either not realizing it, or not being honest about it. But sometimes the body is just done giving up fat for a bit. BTW, 2 weeks isn't a plateau. It's not even a stall. It's typical & should be expected. Honestly, don't think twice about it.

I still struggle with how often to weigh. I should probably only weigh once a week, because there's so much fluctuation from day to day. And during the weight loss phase, weighing more often can be depressing. On the other hand, if we see a weight loss from one day to the next, it might give us liberty to have "just one more bite" that we don't really need. I think once I get to my goal, I'll probably weigh more often to head off any slight gains. Jan

Hey there guys. I'm a little bit discouraged at the moment and could really use some advice. I am 2 weeks post op, just over actually, and I GAINED 2 pounds. I do not have a fill yet. I had my surgery on September 25th, and lost 10 lb in the first week. I then lost 3 lb the second week ( weigh on thursdays ). This morning when I weighed myself, I had Gained 2 pounds. How the heck does that happen??? I am not cleared for exercise until Monday, so i'm sure that will help.. I am still on mushies but can eat some scrambled eggs, soft Proteins and crackers. I am hardly taking anything in as I can't eat more than 1/4 cup at a time. How on EARTH do you gain 2 pounds on mushies?!? I'm SO frustrated. Anyone with similar experiences?? Could really use some support today. Thanks guys! Nicole

Happy 2 Year Bandiversary Merry Losers!

Hello, everybody. I haven't been checking in here enough lately I see. I am glad to see those of us still here. I have had an interesting second year. On the positive side, I had a hernia repair and a tummy tuck in June of last year and an arm lift and a breast lift in October. I am very pleased with the outcome. On a not so postive side, I continually have problems with reflux at night so that I can no longer eat after 4 or drink after 6 at night or I will be up all night. Ingesting reflux has given me pneumonia once already. It continues to get worse and I have been totally unfilled since last September. Luckily, I have continued to lose minute amounts of weight per month - at least not gain. But my diet is mostly liquid or soft foods. My ticker below reflects my current position. I have had an upper GI and and endoscopy in the last month and when I saw my bariatric doctor this week, we looked at the films together. I have pouch dilation without band slippage and scar tissue between the band and stomach which is why I have restriction despite the band being empty. Bottom line - band has to come out. I can either have a band placed back in with no guarantee it won't happen again or convert to gastric bypass. I think I have decided to get the GB. That said, do I regret getting the band? Hell no. It has been hard work for two years and no easy road. I have had reflux almost the entire journey. I never could really eat the types of food others could. Dense Proteins were a problem for me. I had constant follow up care at the doctor's. I followed band rules. I will get a surgery date when I get back from a trip to Pennsylvania next week. It's not my ideal choice but a better one none the less for me. I don't want to lose but 10-15 more pounds and would be happy to stay where I am for the rest of my life. BUT, I have a history of not being able to keep it off so I will have the surgery. -
Dr. Britt and Dr. Groves will be providing monthly support meetings beginning this month. The meetings will alternate between Marshall Medical North in Guntersville and Marshall Medical South in Albertville. See the following link to view their calendar for dates and time. http://www.samc.stirsite.com/page/page/2453219.htm Just a note for all those wishing to use Dr. Britt or Dr. Groves. They no longer have a Madison Office and will not be holding any more seminars in Huntsville/Madison. Their last 2 seminars only produced 3 attendees each. Seminars will now be held in Guntersville or Albertville. With the high level of care and compassion these great doctors have for their patients, it is worth the drive to Guntersville or Albertville. Their aftercare and wonderful staff makes them the best choice in Alabama in my opinion. They are doing LAP-BAND® surgery 2-3 days a week now. They believe in the surgery and the need to provide great after care with follow up visits and fills (adjustments). __________________

That's a new one because I read up on band issues but never heard that one before. My problem is that I will do good but about two to three weeks later I can't keep nothing down including water. I go to my doctor and he just loosen my band a little. The interesting thing is that it helps but like clock work after a few weeks I have that problem again. Anyone had that issue or been told by their doctor what it is or why it does that? Its a horrible feeling.

I haven't had my band very long but I would think they would take some fluid out. I had my first fill last week and at first was doing good but this week has been a struggle keeping down dinner. I seem to do ok during the day with breakfast and lunch but I have thrown up my dinner everyday this week - usually because of whatever meat. Do you think maybe we aren't chewing enough? The other thing could be fluids - I know you aren't suppose to drink a 1/2 hour before or a 1/2 hour after - would that contribute to the trouble?

Hi Everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else has developed an over active thyroid after surgery? I am 13 months post op and have lost 130 pounds. Over the last 3 1/2 weeks I have been having hives really bad all over. The dermatologist did bloodwork and showed my thyroid is over active. I went to the endocarnologist (spelling?) and he said it is extremely over active and that I would have to start taking medicine to regulate. (only temporary) I had to have more bloodwork and on Nov. 2 i am going for a iodine uptake test. I ve heard the medicine makes it slow down and people usually gain weight. I am scared to death, I don't want to gain any weight back. I've come too far. Anyone have any advice? August All Star 2008

I was SOOOO bad with my post-op diet. I know some people will read this and think I'm some horrible person for not following the diet to a t... but I just couldn't do it. I was supposed to be on Clear liquids for a week, then full liquids for a week, then mushies for like 2 weeks I think. I started eating mushies like a week in. I really just couldn't take it. I started solids too soon too. I don't recommend it. I suggest that you stick it out at much as you can. Because I did that I didn't lose any weight until after a fill or two. But honestly, I didn't have any problems with my band from it or anything. I honestly think that being 21 I healed faster and it just wasn't a huge deal. Just be careful and watch it because you want to keep losing weight. It got beyond frustrating for me... Good luck

Hello, First of all Congradulations to all of you with the band ! I am going in on Tuesday June 5th ( wow two more days ) I am getting very nervous and major cold feet worse than getting married LOL It has been so many yrs since I have had a hospital procedure done I just feel lost wondering what to expect when waking up . I have heard the pain is pretty bad, what was your experience ? Any words of wisdom you would share with me I would be so grateful. I posted before but didnt get a response. I am just getting scared of the " what if's " that I read on the complication board. Plus I watched the video of the surgery kinda wished I hadn't , it looked worse than I expected. I dont mean to sound like a baby but now that the date is so close I am getting nervous and a bit emotional at the same time because it is such a life changing event. My weight has ruled my life physically and emotionally for so long I cant imagine what it would be like to get out of the vicious cycle of diet failure. Deep down I am so excited I cant seep. Does this make any sence Haha ? It isnt just an operation it is going to change my life I hope for the better. Anyway what is it like the day of the surgery and that week ? Anything that I should be aware of or that you wished you would of known? Thanks so much you have no idea how much I appreciate your knowledge:) Sincerely Kim

Hi Guys / Girls Im 8 weeks after my 2nd fill and feel restricted but able to consume larger meals of some types, but smaller portions only with the majority of food types...anyway, im back in the gym and started on the weights, 1st time for six years, so I have upped my Protein intake. This consists of as lean meats, fish and 2 to 3 Protein shakes a day, amouniting to about 200grms of protein per day. My problem is that im constantly bloated and my stomach always seems distended. Ive lost over 50lbs from 19st to 15.7st and feel as though Im doing ok, but this stomach thing is getting me down. Any others out there with the same problem??????? Thanks big welsh guy (England)

I have been in that boat too lately. Plateau that is! I think exercise has helped me. I really haven't done much exercise since my surgery. Have been bike riding and getting on the treadmill lately, and it has helped. I have lost 5 more lbs the last 10 days. I think I may need a fill just because I think I want more restriction. I have a little under 40 lbs to lose, and if I have to suffer a little, it will be all worth it. I have been debating..... my dr. comes back from vacation next week. I may call him. I wouldn't get rid of the Diet Coke if you love it. Maybe buy those little half size cans so you can still enjoy it. I am the type that has to have a root beer or dr. pepper several times a week. I just buy the small ones because it satisfies me and I drink less. Just a few thoughts!

This is great! I am Shelly and am recently 34 years old. I live in Longview, Texas and have two boys, 5 & 7. I work full time as a probation officer at all of 4'10 inches... Can you believe it, but have been there a long time now. My husband and I are building our first real home and are very excited and stressed. I have battled my weight all my life and have the same issues when I loose, I just gain back more. I reached my highest weight this summer hitting 195, which is a lot for someone of my height. I decided that taking four - five medications a day at my age is ridiculous! So the surgery. I am six weeks post op with no fills. My DR. will not give fills until 6 weeks and I need one. I haven't lost any weight in almost two weeks. I am not gaining, but not loosing either! It will be great next week. Thanks to all of you for the support. I don't know what I would do! Shelly -
I had a fill a couple weeks ago and I was feeling the same way. I had the doctor remove some of it and I'm still losing but slow.

I don't have my band yet, but I'm on my two week liquid diet, so I can empathize a little bit. The other night, my daughter texted me from Publix, "Mom! Publix has the 20 piece hot wings on sale for just $6.99!" I texted her back, "I just had to suck on a little tiny bite of pizza and you want to tease me with wings?"

You will know the port is there for the next 2 or 3 weeks. It really does not hurt but you will know it's there. Mine hurt some for a week or so then just when you move a certain way or when you go over a bump when in the car. I kind of feel like it shakes it if that makes any sense.

I found out about my gallbladder problems in June this year when i caught pancreatitis due to stones. After it was cured, the lap surgeon ddn't feel confident operating on me due to 390 lbs and 60+ age, referred me to a lap band surgeon who wanted to take it out and put on the lapband - one operation. But that assessment was made based on conveninence and less on where my 'fat' was distributed and the problems that might cause in gallbladder removal alone. I was concerned about whether I was strong enough to recover from both, honestly. Personally i felt unsure about the lapband due to the erosion concerns expressed here, and felt rushed into making that part of the decision so decided to go with just the gallbladder. Good decision. It has taken me a long long time to recover - almost 6 weeks and at least I know the whole problem was the gallbladder and not the lapband too. The doc, when he got in there, had big problems - instead of 3 lap cuts I have 7 and he had to call another lap doc in to help out as the 'trocars' (?) were not long enough to go throught my layers of fat. It was all he could do to just take out the gallbladder without 'opening' me from my breastbone to my hip - so I am thankful for that. The operation took a lot out of me, a whole lot. The additional lapband would have just added to that complication and the doc said he wouldn't have done it then even I had approved both because the gallbladder was so difficult. Operating on big people is not easy - and the gallbladder fits this class. If I decide on the lapband, now I have time to make a proper decision and go into it with my eyes wide open ... and to realize that this is another 'major' operation. Hopefully I've reached that point in life where my mind will work with me to fix my weight problem without to need of another operation for a process that has risks of its own. At least when the gallbladder op is over and recovered, it's over. Do rely on your surgeons and doctors - but all mine promoted having both at once - only I had to live with that decision - and now feel I made the right one. The doc feels the same...but didn't until he got in there. There's a lot of swelling over the gallbladder operation too - perhaps all operations - and it took me a long time to feel 'better'. Getting my strength back from major surgery was very difficult, took weeks, and thank God for my treadmill starting out at the slowest speed for only 5 min a day and increasing.
