Has anyone heard of Malabsorption Gastric Bypass
Orchids&Dragons replied to Sharon B A's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
All gastric bypass surgeries are malabsorptive. I'm not sure if yours is different from a standard bypass, You can be successful with any weight loss surgery. It's more about brain than stomach. Good luck and don't let the switch put you in a negative frame of mind. Your doctor had to do the best he could for you given the circumstances he found. Best wishes! -
Malabsorption of psych meds? Or any meds?
mediocreoblongata replied to Briswife15's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My bariatric surgeon recommended gastric bypass (roux-en-y) for me over the gastric sleeve specifically because I have a long history with metabolic disorders (hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s) and also have PCOS. However, I also have dealt a lot with depression and anxiety over the years and was already seeing a psychiatrist before considering bariatric surgery. I was surprised with my psychiatrists reaction to me telling her I am considering the surgery. Her opinion is that the surgery will cause “malabsorption” issues with the medicine I take - cymbalta is the only one I take routinely and I am in fact trying to wean off of it (medically supervised) completely. She honestly made me feel very uncomfortable about the whole situation, and of course I’m second guessing everything now. Long story short, I have really only been to her twice now (drs keep quitting) and really thinking about asking for a different person to see maybe because of how she made me feel about the surgery. -
Has anyone heard of Malabsorption Gastric Bypass
Sharon B A posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi! Has anyone heard of Malabsorption Gastric Bypass? So i was supposed to have the Duodenal Switch surgery but when my Surgeon went in yesterday my stomach was incased in scar tissue from previous surgeries so he didn't reduce my stomach he said he disconnected and then reconnected the bottom part of my stomach so i wouldn't absorb as many calories. He said it would have been very dangerous, risk of piercing stuff and would have also needed to do open surgery if he was to remove the scar tissue.. Has anyone heard of this or had it happen to you? I feel devastation. -
I had my bypass surgery on the 2nd July. How did everyone's surgery go? Also all the best to the ones having it soon. xxx Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

Had my revision to RNY yesterday. Surgery went well and they also fixed a pretty large Hiatal hernia. Water is going down fine. I keep sleeping with my mouth open & it is royally drying my mouth out. They gave me an anti nausea patch behind my ear that is working like a charm . The pain is also different from when I had the sleeve. More gas in my chest this time & it feels like I did 8million sit-ups, but I know each day will get better. To all those getting revision- make sure you walk laps around the floor and definitely take the main meds. They work! And make sure you ask for sugar free popsicles ! I assume the Dr is going to make me stay an extra night but not sure. Happy I am finally through it and on the road to no more GERD. Good luck to all who will also be going through this!🍀

I work in the GI department of a hospital. Today we had a patient who was 14 years post gastric bypass. She looked great, but had started having pain in her upper abdomen. She had also started drinking alcohol fairly regularly. The endoscopic exam revealed a horrific ulcer at the jejunum-gastric anastomosis. I have seen other post bypass patients with ulcers and erosions at the anastomosis, but hers was the worst by far. I do not want to offend anyone, but seeing the damage done by becoming a bit careless or overconfident, even years after surgery, was enough for me to commit to NEVER touch alcohol, and certainly never to smoke. I will not drink coffee again, either. I had surgery to improve my health and I never want to risk it by slipping into any habit or vice that could do damage to tissues that obviously remain more fragile for many years, if not forever. To anyone who cares to listen, please heed your doctor's instructions when he/she tells you not to drink, smoke, or eat/drink particular items. There really is a good reason, and what I saw on the endoscope today really brought that reality home.

Im sure hundreds have felt this way BUT MY BOOBS ARE GONE!
ValerieInMexico replied to BlueAngelEyes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did have a breast lift, 15 years ago, 5 years after my RNY. 2nd best thing I did after the Bariatric surgery. Girls still look good. Torrid have wonderful stretchy lace bralettes that are not tight but work for providing a little support and they can help you look pretty. They have size 14. I am sure that they have them elsewhere. @Missouri-Lee's Summit It has been 20 years since my RNY. I was working and traveling for work. I, too, had problems with diarrhea. I fasted for 24 hours before a flight because I did not want to have to get up to on the plane, only to be told to sit down. I had a friend lose it and she said it was the worst thing that ever happened to her. Then, I would just worry myself sick over where the bathrooms were where ever I visited. So, I spent a lot of time researching and testing foods. I can not eat any fatty things. Nothing. No ice cream, no soft cheeses, nothing deep fried, no buttery baking. I have to avoid any fatty meat, meat in general. Low fat dairy does not trigger a problem. Trust me, if I know I am going to be home all day, I may have a scoop of ice cream. But I have learned its just not worth it. The other thing I did was pelvic floor exercises. Well, my trainer at the time (a mom of 6), said to do thirty pelvic floor lifts three times a day. Do them while you do the dishes for example. She said, just squeeze your butt muscles like you are trying to stop a fart. "keegles " can also help. (spelling?) I always have Imodium in my purse. I am scheduled for a modification/revision of my pouch and RNY on the 31st of this month. Post surgery, when I can have blended foods, I will add oatmeal(tablespoon uncooked) and brown rice (tablespoon cooked) to my meals as that slows things down. Maybe that will help? My Mom and several relatives had IBS, and they have not had bariatric surgery. I think I am just an IBS person with bariatric surgery, so I need to be extra careful. Good luck.... -
Wow thank you! Such nice words i appreciate it. A lot. Trust your surgeon. I was fortunate that insurance wasnt an issue and covered the revision. Quickly.

Truly happy for you and the speedy recovery!! I felt your denial and pain of going through a second surgery in your posts and I'm glad you were awesomely rewarded by a quick recovery. Full disclosure: TBH, I keep going back and forth between the sleeve and the bypass as it's a very difficult decision to make. I'm deathly afraid of GERD and sincerely your need to revise got me hopping to my surgeon's office. She continues to insist that the sleeve is still a great fit for me so I'll trust her judgement. I'll say that how you handled everything has been a class act[emoji122][emoji122][emoji122][emoji122] and dare I say, if the worst happens with my journey, I hope I handle it like you[emoji169][emoji169][emoji169][emoji169][emoji108][emoji108] But let this thread continue, it's a joyous thread that I look forward to daily......okay, hourly[emoji1][emoji1][emoji1] Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

1 week Post OP and feeling weak/fatigued
EstyJami posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I'm new to the forum. I'm 1 week 1 day post op from gastric bypass and in general feeling a bit tired and weak/fatigued, like my muscles feel fatigued even just putting my hair up in a pony tail or walking up my stairs. Is this normal? Did everyone else feel this way and if so when did you start feeling normal again? -
Im sure hundreds have felt this way BUT MY BOOBS ARE GONE!
Born in Missouri replied to BlueAngelEyes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm too old and too "done" with trying to be anything other than healthier. My boobs are deflated and saggy to China. My bowels still seem to have very little holding power. I've lost track of the number of times I've left a feces trail to the bathroom or lost my load right on the kitchen floor. It's as if my bowel muscles don't exist or all the rejiggering has shortened my "holding tank". I'd love for someone to explain the anatomical changes with my bowels. After one year, leaking is still a problem. And the smell. It's nothing like I've ever smelled. It's almost like it's not fully processed and comes out before the necessary flora or enzymes have had a chance to break things down. Bleach is a necessary standby. I feel like an incontinent old dog or something. It's humiliating. Should I consider wearing a diaper when I go out? I now keep a big pan under my bed so if I can't get to the bathroom in time (or it's occupied) I have a place to go other than the floor at my feet. It's a feeling like know other. I can relate to other people now, like my mother with dementia, who has her fair share of accidents. The shame I feel is hard to get past. I've started seeing a therapist. Amazingly, she has a history of her own... a mini-bypass sixteen years ago. It's nice to have someone understand my continuing body dysphoria, my bowel leaking, boob disappearance, etc.-- that on top of everything else going on. It's actually the "everything else" that creates the most distress in my life but I try to tell myself that we all have mountains of stress (just different circumstances) and I can get through this and more and be a stronger person for it. Anyway, I'm trying my best. This site is the one place for me to continue venting, even after one year. It's a place of peace and non-judgmental acceptance. I don't know how many times (particularly in the beginning before and right after my surgery) when someone like Matt Z, AlteredRealty, Frust8, GreenTealael, FluffyChix and many others... who came to my rescue with good advice and much-needed empathy. I've needed you all less as time goes by, but when I do need someone... someone is always here. That is a feeling that has no monetary value. This site is invaluable to many of us for so many reasons. Thank you to all who have cared about me or helped me selflessly in big and small ways. -

What made you realize you needed a revision to your roux-n-y surgery
ValerieInMexico replied to Polishanita1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I did not even know it was possible until someone told me about their procedure. This person had a revision and lost 50 pounds. I consulted with her surgeon, wondering what he could do to help me with gastric reflux and making my stomach pouch smaller. He explained the choices and then made a recommendation. Really, I would not have thought of it on my own, but now I am excited. My RNY did help me loose 100 pounds, 19 years ago and I kept 80 or so off, so it was successful. I just want to go further and he will see if there is something he can do with the reflux. -

I am as usual late to the thread. So glad that you are healing and up moving about! Thank you for a few laughs as my freezer is full of Popsicles that are all mine... recovering from some nasty complications following plastics which has had me on the popsicle pity party for the last six weeks. Also it is excellent that people are beginning to speak of revisions and some of the long-term decisions post WLS. Yes I initially gained 15 pounds after surgery and I’m down to eight lbs but am still draining.... -
July 2019 - Surgery Schedule
ValerieInMexico replied to Mom_of_Chaos's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The surgeon will not know what he is going to do until he looks. I had an endoscopy recently, and all looks healthy, but the surgeon was a gastroenterologist and could not tell me if I had stretched the pouch. I just know I can eat a lot of food at one sitting. The goal will be to reduce the capacity. If he can, indeed, reduce the capacity that may be all we do. If not, he will modify my RNY so that a greater length of intestine is bypassed. Mine was a short bypass, done 20 years ago. Really not as effective as what they are doing now. Good luck with this pre surgical diet! My only problem is that I go to sleep hungry. Not something I have done in many, many years.
