I'm so glad this thread was made. My family and I are huge backpackers and hikers/mountain biking folks. On a weekend we usually ride 25-30 miles of singletrack trails, and take frequent biking/camping trips. We're planning a 3 day hiking trip in September when its not 1000 degrees in Texas. We did the same trip last year in July, hot as hell and wasn't as fun because of the heat. In May we're celebrating our 4 year anniversary and my wife has planned a camping trip for the two of us. No hike in, but a primitive site with plenty of hiking opportunities throughout the area for day hikes. When I was carb cycling in the past to get ready for meets, I loved the carb conscious Supreme Protein bars. 30g protein per bar, 6g NET carbs, and 4g sugar. the do have sugar alcohols so depending on how your body handles them, be forewarned. They never knocked me out of keto in the past, and never gave me the runs unless I ate 4 of them. Like Fiddleman said, Water water water, moreso than ever before. We bought a filtration system so we can collect water from any source. They really do work nicely unless the water is just way too muddy, you'd need a good filter then. It makes it a little more challenging with water sources in places, but I think it's more rugged living off the land. We take camping pans with us, cook up eggs and sausage/bacon by campfire when we go on 2-3 day hikes, no carbs, good source of protein to get the day started. Also carry cheese and pepperoni with me, love it. Also, electrolyte water like Vitamin water, Gatorade G2, or just electrolyte tabs to put in to your water. You can find a lot of low carb electrolyte supplements on runners websites since they're huge on that stuff. As for the when, my doc told me 6 weeks at first, then released me at 4.5 weeks. But after he saw a video of a few trails we maintain and ride frequently, he told me no crazy off road biking until 6 weeks just to be safe.

Hi all, I am looking for a dietician in the DFW area. Any recommendations? Been stuck in the 310 area, down from 432, but I still want to get to 240. I was back to 325, but started doing Keto, and came back down to the 310 area. Usually floating between 310 and 314. Been stuck for last year and a half, roughly, and feeling frustrated. Thanks in advance.

If you’re not eating low carb now, I’d suggest trying keto. I usually drop 5-6 pounds in my first week because of the water weight -

My first question is why you are choosing to do Keto? While the science is valid in the ketogenic diet producing positive weight loss results, the long term results are not sustainable. More over, those who stop Keto, usually do it incorrectly, and risk putting back on all the weight they lost through the diet. Are you looking for a quick fix to drop some weight or a plan you can stick with? A diet that requires you to eat 75% of your meals as fat needs some serious consideration before diving in. Just my opinion.

I am meeting with my surgeon on Tuesday but his nurse practitioner told me to already start losing weight. Problem is I don’t know what meal plan to use. Keto, Paleo, Mediterranean, ???? I am not sure where to start. I still have a few months at least until my surgery, but I want to get a jump on it. Any advise from those that have done this would be appreciated.

I did modified keto diet for the 6 months prior to surgery. I had a lot of success with it. It helped me to lose 30lbs prior to surgery.

Brand new member, brand new sleeve!
Hammer_Down posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello all! None of you know who I am, but I know many of you from obsessively reading your posts, trials and success stories for the past several months. I'd like to thank everyone who puts themselves out there to the broader public to educate us about this procedure and many of the bumps in the road. Like many of you, I have struggled with my weight for most of my life, starting in adolescence. Despite assurances from my friends and family that I looked fine, and that I wasn't really fat (just a little fat, I guess) I was never at a weight where I felt truly confident in my own skin. More importantly, I never truly felt that I was fulfilling my physical capabilities. I excelled at sports when I was younger, but I could recognize even then that my weight was holding me back from taking it to the next level. Jump ahead 15 years (I am 32 now) and my "normal" fluctuations of weight went from about 20 lbs (I stayed between 185-205 for most of a decade) to more like 60lbs (getting as high as 250, doing keto for 2 years and getting down to 150, only to gradually start gaining back to 250. I work as a long haul truck driver, and although I don't indulge myself at most truck stops, the sheer lack of physical activity is certainly part of my weight issue now. After maintaining this new (disappointing) weight, I decided it was time to avail myself of every tool in the box. During a very drunken conversation with an old friend, she said that I she couldn't lose her excess 120lbs by her birthday, she was just "gonna get the gastric surgery". This sent me searching for more information, and one of the sites I found was this one. Never one to say or do things I don't mean, I ended up researching the process with my mind set on making it happen. Unfortunately, in my part of Canada, the wait is very long (more than 5 years, start to finish) and at a BMI of 36, there was no hope I would be approved. I could never afford $20000USD+ to have it done south of the border, so I contacted A Lighter Me and got the ball rolling. I just had my surgery last week, I am 6 days post-op and just got back home today. I feel prepared for some of the challenges coming my way, and hope that I can be of some help to someone else who is out there, reading this and trying to decide what to do. Thanks for reading! -
I have been following my surgeons fairly restrictive low carb eating plan for a month. No more than 10 carbs per meal. This past weekend I smelled some delicious pizza and almost cheated, but held strong and had my wife make me keto pizza. No problem. This morning however my Filipina wife made her fried bread she eats with her coffee and I cheated and had a small piece. Now you might be thinking this topic is going to be me crying over cheating. Its not. I don't regret it because after having it I realized it wasn't that great. I mean it tasted good but so does many of the low carb things I eat. That is me working through food addiction one step at a time. Thanks to wealth of information on here, I am progressing. Thanks to all of the posters on this forum.

It's not really a thing to "stretch" your sleeve. You should not be worried about that. People do experience some "relaxation" in their sleeves around the 9-12 month mark. That's why the first 9-12 months are often called the "honeymoon" period, where you have the most restriction. Weight watchers doesn't really seem compatible with a WLS diet. You should be having a LOT of protein and very few crabs. As far as I know, Weight Watchers allows for a fair number of carbs. If you feel like you need to be on some kind of structured diet, I would recommend Atkins or Keto.

Walking-Carbs-Calories....Need advice!
RickM replied to NCGURL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It could well be the low carb count - such lethargy is a hallmark of low carb dieting (one of the reasons that I never went that direction - I couldn't afford the side effects.) The keto enthusiasts insist that you are supposed to be able to burn fat to get that energy, unfortunately, our bodies don't read those diet books so don't always know what they are "supposed" to do. Talk to your surgeon about your needs and what can be changed if his program isn't working out for you - you may be doing more work than your surgeon was anticipating in providing those instructions. Timing can be an important consideration if you have specific workout times when you do your walking and run into your problem. A small snack an hour or so ahead of time, composed of something relatively high in complex carbohydrates, moderate in protein and low to moderate in fat can provide the longer enduring energy needed to extend things some - this is what I worked out with my RD when I was running into a wall about an hour into my swimming at about 4 months out and hit the spot just right. I did not increase my calories for the energy, but just reallocated what I was already consuming. If your walking is more spread out during the day, it may take a more generalized increase in complex carbohydrates or fats, or a bit more of both, during the day to meet those needs. Another thought is that it could be a bit of anemia - have you had labs checked lately. Iron is the traditional problem but B12 is sometimes a problem - some programs recommend B12 supplements as a matter of course and some don't, and some people are more sensitive to it than others as well. Also, double check your hydration, as you may think that you have been well hydrated, but if you just increased your exercise levels a month ago and didn't increase your hydration to compensate, you may not be doing as well as you think. -

Not new to low carbs & so I am familiar with some side effects
BgR72 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have done the atkins diet. I have done the fasting programs. Warrior program. Went 25 hours without food & then eat one time & fast again. So I have some understanding of low carbs or no carbs. I used the keto strips to see if I got into the fat burning process. So I did different programs. Ultimately, I didnt get a consistent weight loss from these programs. Maybe 18 lbs then couldnt sustain the weight loss and or lose any more. I noticed that while on a low carb program or no carb that I kept a dry mouth. Also with the dry mouth was the bad breath because of the dry mouth. It was unpleasant. So, I started to chew gum more change mouthwash to non alcohol. It helped somewhat but more or so to cover up the dry mouth & bad breath. Basically, I found out that dry mouth and bad breath may be what some may deal with when carbs are low. So with the pre & post op program this may become an issue for some. I heard that we cant chew gum. I think that's what I read. I will confirm with the nutritionist. If so, I got to find a replacement because I know this will be a problem for me. Maybe sugarfree mints? IDK. Still wont be the same like chewing in gum. I wonder is this just for 6 months post surgery not to chew gum ? Got to ask my doctor to make sure. If someone knows Im sure I will read it. But will ultimately confirm yes or no when I see my doctor this week. Anyone dealing with dry mouth and or bad breath while on pre or post op program. -
It's all good. If it's the keto-breath monster then that means you are moving the scale righteously......which you clearly are. Looking at your progress all it easy to see that you are winning the battle really well. Off to an impressive start. This much momentum is most likely fueled by ketosis. Roll with it and tote a container of mints in your pocket. You are kicking ass !!!!

@FluffyChix - question about IF before I dive in & proposition ;)
KarenLR75 posted a topic in The Lounge
@FluffyChix & @Orchids&Dragons I was going to try to dive into the IF fasting thread and made it as far as detailing out your (Fluffy's) Down Days, up days and I think um..medium days. While I don't mind doing research, I was wondering if along the journey with IF which spans many many pages, did you change over to something other than what you started your IF journey with? I see ppl post 16:8 - is that 16 hrs of not eating followed by 8? I did try to follow some of that & am HIGHLY HIGHLY interested in research and cold hard facts about extending telomeres (sp?)..I think they are called (re: aging). So specifically looking for something targeted to getting physical age when measured by a physician to improve over my true bio age...does that make sense. ABOVE ALL OF THIS THOUGH, I know I have a very metabolically resistant body. Part is going into early menopause in 40's...a crap diet for over 15 years...inflammation issues with messed up knee. IBS issues since a kid (keto helped me out with this a lot). Starting to have ovarian pain so am worried about cysts...you know the deal. Was diagnosed with malignant melanoma last year, early stage, but I know melanoma is a tricky...very very tricky and insidious cancer sneak. I feel like my body is screaming out for help and I want to do what I can, even at this age...to finally...care for it. See if I can reign in or stop progression of some things Of course, one of the top pty's is continuing to lose as much weight as possible during this our honeymoon period as I call it Serious @FluffyChix I would even consider paying you for a session just to help me get a quicker grasp on things. Weight Watchers started that recently with 'coaches' you could hire and schedule time with. Think about it perhaps? -

I completely blanked on this....I literally am having a hard time remembering things lately..to the point it is a bit embarrassing. Ironically, when they told me to start on real foods, P3's were mentioned and while I had a huge adverse reaction to scrambled eggs in the soft food phase, one of the easiest things for me to eat and keep down out of the P3 packs were actually the nuts! It is SO weird how different everyone's experience with certain foods can be. I literally sometimes gag when I'm eating lunch meat type items..and even cheese..I start to get nauseated after eating about 3 or 4 cubes..but the nuts..no nausea, no vomiting, no pain. Often I leave a few chunks of both meat and cheese uneaten in my P3 packs. I did keep to soft food phase today though. Nothing sounds good but my stomach is letting me know..my pouch...that it would like something more than 1/2 a protein shake. I'm out of cottage cheese but am grabbing a carbmaster yogurt. Thanks for your continued input. Truly didn't mean to disregard your wise advice. I think my brain is clogged sometimes I'll give my dr's plan a try - the carbs are definitely all what I call 'low glycemic impact ones' and I have at times during my intense 15 months of keto (I say intense as I was continually keeping carbs under 20 grams), sometimes when I'd stall, eaten/added some healthy carbs for a day...and then the scale would move again. -
I have my surgery December 26th, 2018 the day after Christmas and I have been following my pre-op diet and was wondering how much weight is one expected to loose? I am day 11 and my weight loss has seemed to stall. I am only 10 lbs down from beginning weight of pre-op diet and have seemed to stall there? Is this normal? Also, normally I do not have menstrual cycles but started my period 3 days ago. When I tried Keto in the past, I also bled the whole month I was on it until I raised my carbs? Seem that I bleed every time I lower my carbs and it's just miserable. Has anyone else had issues like this?

I’m over society shaming people for being overweight and then when they decide to do something about it that isn’t diet an exercise, shaming them for their decision to “take the easy way out” and have surgery. I am tired of the average Joe or Jane suddenly becoming a nutritionist and a medical provider doling out useless advice we have all heard a million times before. “Just eat less!” “ Exercise more!” “Do Keto!” “Cut carbs!” THANKS NEVER THOUGHT OF IT. The amount of men going in on Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit cover model calling her obese is ridiculous. Dad bods are celebrated but a woman that doesn’t fit the classic American beauty standards are “disgusting.” And it’s always under the guise of “bUt It’S uNhEaLtHy.” No, you just can’t handle a different body type. Don’t sit there and pretend you care about health. And then the “surgery is the east way out.” Uh no. No it’s not. Not with the amount of consultations and evaluations and testing i needed to undergo. This also was my last resort; i tried for years to lose on my own and couldn’t-not with the over 100 lbs i needed to lose. Add in pre diabetes, PCOS, depression/anxiety and it feels insurmountable. If the general public thinks surgery is the easy way out or thinks it only works for people on My 600 LB Life, they should do the liquid liver shrinking diet for a week and see how long they last. They should undergo the evaluations. They could google the requirements before saying it’s the easy way out. But it’s easier to sit there and judge because fatphobia is more than acceptable, especially when it comes to women.

Intermittent Fasting- Anyone?
RickM replied to Tim C's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm kinda with Greater Fool on this, in that almost anything will work at this point, and even for the next few months. 20-30 years ago, it was not uncommon for bariatric programs to tell their patients to "just eat like you always have, just less..." and they lost weight just fine eating the same way that got them fat in the first place. At least they did for the first few months to year and then they started gaining again because they never learned how to eat sustainably. It is not unusual to see people come into these forums after having failed at (insert favorite fad diet here - Keto, Paleo, IF, Atkins, Zone...) and they continue eating that way and gee, all of a sudden that's the only diet that will work with your WLS. I did much the same thing, too, adopting a basically balanced nutrition oriented diet that I could do forever - worked on evolving that for several years before surgery, then tailored that for the lower post op intake and continued with that as the intake naturally increased over time; still doing that ten years later. IF works like most of those diets - by forcing a reduction in caloric intake. Some cut out fats, some carbohydrates, IF cuts out time, but they all are a mechanism for reducing caloric intake, which you really don't need at this point as you can't eat much to begin with. As noted, stalls will come and go, and there are as many personal experiences and hypotheses as to how to "break a stall" as there are people. I really have no input on how to break a stall as I never really had much of one, even at the dreaded three week point. Chalk it up to better diet, stronger underlying metabolism, not worrying about them - who knows. As to your experience, consider that you have a data set of one - and it's real hard to establish a trend with a single data point. Just go with the flow! Good luck -
My surgeon wanted me to lose 10 lbs before surgery. My insurance needs me to not have gained any weight since my first consult, but i gained 5 lbs in that first two weeks. So now i have a total of 15 lbs to lose. I've basically been eating as clean as possible and as close to a post surgery diet as my body will allow me. I have a green smoothie in morning, salad for lunch and a fish based dinner. I'll switch things out as i feel like but for the most part this is my diet. I have one more month left before my last weigh in, prior to insurance approval; my goal is to go very low carb about two weeks before. I have had temporary success with Keto so I'd recommend trying that.= or at least a low carb diet. Its pretty helpful to get those quick lbs off pre - op. My issue was maintaining the lifestyle but i think once I have the sleeve, the new diet and lifestyle should be low carb friendly. Plus low carb is good for those with diabetes or pre diabetes. Good Luck!

So pre surgery Ive always had success with low carb. My surgeon promotes Keto. Ive done both or I guess Ive done lazy keto post op. Im right at 6 months out. Im wanting to swap it up and try something new to help my body stay on the losing side of things. Ive recently started working out more and the weight isn't coming off as quickly, actually gained a pound this week. Ive recently read Chris Powell's Choose More Lose More for Life and found that Im pretty close to following his Turbo carb cycling already. I just need to get a little more specific with meal plans. Just looking to see if others have tried carb cycling? opinion? results? any extra info?

I am keeping junk food out of the house as much as possible but I did buy some Quest protein chips and some Slim Fast Keto Fat Bombs. Just a few chips or 1 fat bomb will keep my sweet or salty craving at bay. I'm trying to be realistic and substitute bad food for less bad alternatives.... It's just not realistic for me to NEVER have a piece of chocolate or a handful of chips. -
Congrats! I'm curious if there are different 'flavors' of Cigna if you will. I have Cigna and just met with an in network bariatric surgeon and to my shock, despite my one year of supervised weight loss with primary doctor (length of time determined by MYSELF and knowing IF Cigna required it, I would more than meet this requirement; however, they are saying Cigna REQUIRES SIX MONTHS of visits with a nutritionist and they must be 'back to back' or you have to start all over??!! My primary dr has been a huge fan of low carb/keto lifestyle whether you are obese or not to help patients with other health issues so over the years and before my supervised weight loss, we would trade out info on the latest trend, counting macros, why you can stall and be in highest (deep purple level of ketosis), how many ppl don't realize too much protein can be converted to Glucose. As my weight loss slowed due to both knees now needing to be replaced (still in shock from that) and insurance only approving injections every 6 months, the difficulty I have getting around is devastating to me. WHY would they toss out the weight loss requirement and INCREASE to an unfathomable level, a requirement to see nutritionist BEFORE surgery for SIX MONTHS?! I have been preparing to ensure that I was truly ready for this for 4 years...doing the supervised weight loss especially while battling being able to get around and working 50+ hr weeks has been difficult but doable and I was so happy I hit a weight loss of 50 lbs (mostly from last 9 months). I fully expected to see nutritionist 1 or 2 times before surgery and then again multiple times after. I know I need to see one although I will be bringing them what I've been doing and having them many any necessary adjustments. I'm still stunned. I just found this out yesterday. Ironically both my primary and my surgeon feel that having this be such a long requirement w/o requiring the weight loss or maybe they require just a shorter period...is to discourage ppl from getting the surgery. I guess they'd rather pay my 50K to 100K annual hospital stays? Sorry, I do want you to know that I am above thrilled for you...but so very very confused and disappointed for me. Mexico looking better & better..
