  1. I decided to post this so we can all remember the basic rules to succeed with vsg. I have noticed my weightloss has slowed down allot mostly due to eating too many carbs. Im in the calorie range my doc wants to be in but my carbs are high. according to his book if you stall or plateau its either 3 things:too much carbs, not enough exercise, or your building muscle. For me i think its the first 2. Here we go! 1. I will exercise 5 times a week for 30-45 minutes. 2.I will watch my carbohydrate intake 3.I will try to eat 3-5 meals per day with no unhealthy snacking in between 4.I will drink 8 glasses of Water per day 5.I will eat a minimum of 60-70 grams of Protein daily 6.I will honor my commitment to good health and healthy choices 7.I will have follow up care appointments with my doc as needed 8.I will always take my Vitamins 9.I will weight my self once a week 10.I will remember that this is my own journey and not compare my self to others 11.I will always keep in mind that practicing my new habits will make me healthier happier stronger and more energetic. This is what I turn to when I fall off the wagon sort of speak. I need to drink more water, eat more protein, exercise more, and drink more water. Gotta keep my head in the game. Thanks to my Dr.Alvarez for his awesome book about vsg. Hope this helps others
  2. A stall at week 2 or 3 happens to everyone. If you just keep following the instructions for Protein, exercise and Water, it will pass. I know how frustrated you feel, I was going crazy too. Keep your chin up! My doctor said a way to get over a stall is to increase your calories significantly for 2-3 days (say, 1100-1200) then drop them back down to 800.

    Breastfeeding 2 years post op

When my babies were being breastfed, I did notice that my appetite remained at pregnancy levels. (This was many years ago and long before my VSG. ) I think you do need a few extra calories while lactating. Do you have a lactation consultant or nurse at your ob/gyn's office? If so, ask her/him. They may not be familiar with our post op diets, but they can tell how many extra calories lactation takes.
  4. Well you can think all the bad stuff you want!!! :-) All ot that is low calorie and fat free!
  5. Did anything change in your diet at the same time ? New food types introduced? I think a lot of us are losing during pre & post op weeks at a great rate due to being in calorie deficit as well as in a state of ketosis. Then we go and add pureed stuff that maybe takes us out of ketosis.....depending what it is we add to the diet. Our bodies fuel type changes....things occur.
  6. I felt really tired all the time until I was on soft foods and was able to get in more calories. If you are going to try to be physically active, I encourage you to try to get your protein and calories in. I didn't do anything more intense than "brisk walking" until I was over 850 calories a day. Then I stepped it up to 1100-ish calories a day as soon as I could from there. I would say, for me, that was about two months post-op?

    Second Round of Restriction???

The nerves that were severed in your stomach have finally knitted back together. This is why you feel the full restriction now. Mine was about 4 months too. I still have a big restriction {whoop whoop } so I have 5 or 6 tiny meals a day. Otherwise my calories are too low to keep up with my busy new life

    Almost 4 weeks post op

Do I think you should try? Of course! Is it going to be easy...no way! I dare say, 99% of banded folks have felt exactly as you are right now. Hence the name bandster HELL. Every single thing you do as far as exercise will help. If your doc wants 1000 calories and you feel you youre giving your best effort and are closer to 12-1500, thats your best effort. Thats all anyone can ask of us, our best effort. Until you get to that restriction level that will help DRASTICALLY, it really is just a diet. You can do it though, one day at a time.
  9. I was banded 1/29/13, I did the 2 week pre op liquid diet and as of today I have lost 26 lbs. I can't seem to get enough calories or protein in. I am getting around 400 calories a day and maybe 40 grams of protein. I work out 5 days a week. I have plenty of energy and I feel great but I'm worried this isn't enough. Here is an example of my daily food: 3 oz of eggs in the morning 3 oz of tuna with low cal mayo for lunch 3-4 oz of chicken for dinner I don't fee like eating much more. Does anyone have suggestions?
  10. During the soft food stage I struggled with same issue. I sliced up bananas and froze them. I could then use one frozen banana with peanut butter in a blender with skim milk. The frozen banana will give you the texture of a shake and you end up with fruit, dairy and protein plus some needed calories. Speaking with nutritionist is a must!

Who waited longer to get their first fill?

Thanks everyone for you input. I think I jinxed myself. LOL This is the first week that the scale hasn't moved an ounce. :cry I had finally made my decision to not get a fill, but now I'm not sure again. I think I'll wait it out a bit more to see what happens, maybe this stall is just temporary. I've been tracking my calories daily and am only getting in 500-700/day. If I get filled, I'll be down to almost nothing. Still doesn't make sense to me that with less than 700 calories a day, I'm not losing. I've read enough here to know not to worry...LOL....but it's sooooo damn frustrating. :faint: Thanks again!
  12. There's always McD's french fries, homemade bread and butter, and chocolate sundaes. LOL Kidding:) Tealael's advice is spot on....take your food journal and go see your doc and nutritionist. You might just need to up your calories, but something else might be going on, too. Best to get some help investigating what's going on and get some safe solid answers. Let us know what you find out. Good luck!
  13. Carbonation doesn't stretch your sleeve. It might make you feel bloated, gassy and uncomfortable but it doesn't stretch your sleeve. Beer has a lot of carbs and empty calories so it is certainly not a wise choice, but it's a choice that you are free to make. I drink a beer or two every week and simply log in the calories. I'e been maintaining for over a year so I know it's OK for ME to do it. Only YOU can determine what's ok for YOU.
  14. hi, this isnt brought up as a criticism of anyone. it happens to unbanded people in fact it is why i want one in part, regaining weight. hitting your goal, something in your life changes and we start gaining again. what surprises me is reading about people who are banded that get an unfill and report gaining quickly 20-30 lbs or more. the apprehension i have a week or so out from getting my band is ridiculous, i'm not only afraid i'll overeat and damage the band but the really disturbing thought is i'll miss being able to over eat. i should mention the flip side of that thought is liberating, being free of that sick feeling and life revolving around food. so, with the band do habits really change, do some of us too easily revert to overeating when restriction is removed or is there a long term change to metabolism that results in weight gain if we return to eating normal amount of calories?

I am 6 weeks out and stalled!

I was 6 weeks this past Tuesday and I'm going through same thing. I posted yesterday and it seems like other 6-7 weekers are going through same. It is really frustrating. I've lost about 2 lbs in the past 2 weeks. Lost 35 total. I'm also following my plan of 80 G protein. I get anywhere from 600-800 calories a day. I just don't know. Hang in there. I'm trying to!
  16. The hot chocolate is probably fine. But Peanut Butter,, nope, it is very, very high in calories and sugar. Not worth it. I really would not mess with peanut butter at all during your weight loss phase. There is a product called PB2. Its a powdered peanut butter that you add Water and stir. For me it satisfied the peanut butter crave and has a fraction of the calories. I get mine at walmart. If you prepared it with a little extra water, small bites of this would probably be ok on full liquids.
  17. You still have the band and it is still working, but the only thing that can ruin your operation is getting it removed. The operation is a physical thing and is going to stay there. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight If you eat less calories than you burn, you will loose it. Shakes and Icecream and stuff that is soft and high calorie goes right through your band. If you eat good fish, or other good protien, it has more solid form and you can "pack" your pouch and little by little it goes through and gets digested. You feel full much longer, but if you drink while you eat, you rilnse it right through. You need to cooperate with the mechanics of the band, it is a tool, it doesnt strain our calories, it just makes it harder for you to continue to eat large portions. A shake or pudding or mushie cakes are just not going to give you the good nutrition you need to be healthy. Once in a while, we all eat something wrong, but it is a lot easier to get back with the program. Your band will remain, you can return to your good habits and continue to loose pounds. It wont ruin your operation.

    2 weeks of working out

You will, love the tread-mill. I have been watching the old t.v. while working out and this seems to help make the time pass. The other night I did a one hour weight/cardo class...they say it burns about 700 calories. I'm going again tonight. Thanks so much for the reply, that was really nice of you.
  19. How many calories do you eat a day? I read that until you get to goal calories should be 600-800 a day. Protein 70 , 64 ounces water. You did start at a low BMI, the closer to your ideal weight the harder it gets to lose. Exercise will make you loose faster. Hang in there it will come off eventually.

Need to get back on track!

Morning. Start to write down what you are eating daily. This is a start. You are just comfortable and feel you know the amounts you can eat by heart. I did the same. Also, try making your lunch the night before and dinners the week of. Breakfast, I usually have one egg, one slice of cheese, and one slice of melon. It is healthy and has Protein. I never drink my calories, I would rather have substance. Start walking and making sure you are drinking your fluids. Hope this helps.
  21. It's normal, wait a week before you weigh again. I know it's dissapointing because I'm in hospital and up 11 pounds due to IV fluids (and maybe the 100mg of prednisone). I know I'm not gaining fat on less than 600 calories a day but it's still frustrating. I keep reminding myself that I didn't gain this 100 pounds in a week!
  22. So I have read numerous threads and have to ask reasoning on this topic. If you are staying within your calorie range before getting a fill- how is it possible to not lose weight when you are all the sudden able to lose after getting your fill but still taking in around the same calories? Why does getting a fill all the sudden change things if you are still eating the same calories?
  23. I'd say that your calories are too low, especially given all of the walking you are doing. You can't live on 600-800 calories per day forever, and I'd be really leery of any medical doctor that encourages that. I'd have another conversation with your team and make it really clear how much walking you are doing. Good luck!
  24. I know it seems counterproductive, but upping your calories will likely help you to get the scale moving. And it would help with the hunger. Also, I eat 7 times per day, about 2 hours apart. That structure has really helped me to stay focused, and since I know that I will be eating again pretty soon, I don't have a hunger issue. I just keep the day's total around 1200 calories, 20 carbs, and 100-120 grams of protein.

    Help, 3 months post op!

I am also 3 months post op. I have hit a huge stall... Lost basically nothing in almost a month! I am at the gym daily doing a combo of cardio and strength and I too am noticing eating more. Can I ask your calories? I am getting so frustrated because I was losing more per week prior to surgery than I am now. I have lost 75lbs total, 35 are from post op. I'm trying to stay optimistic but after a month of hard work it's getting more and more difficult.
