I had researched weight loss surgery about 8 years ago, then bypass and lap bad were the choices. Neither really appealed to me. I knew a few folks that had lots of issues with the lap band. I didn't' want the long term absorption issues that can come with bypass either. My biggest issues with unsuccessful weight loss in the past has been appetite. I did have a big appetite and portion size was and issue. About two years ago I started searching again and found info on the sleeve. This seemed to be a very good option for me. And my doctor agreed. I did my research and was convinced. I am 13 months out and could not be happier. Good luck in your choice, get all the answers you need!

I don't like the bypass because you're re-routing stuff, which means there are more things to go wrong. Vitamin malabsorption (sp?) is also an issue with bypass. I originally got a band, because I don't believe in cutting healthy organs. But the thing I learned from the band (though my doctor explained it up front, I still had to learn it for myself!), is that it's great for your body signaling "you're full now," it doesn't address the hunger hormone issue (ghrelin). When you remove most of the stomach, you're getting rid of the ghrelin, which is the nagging voice that says, "...Are you getting hungry? I think you're getting hungry. You're hungry, aren't you? OMG, YOU BETTER HAVE SOMETHING NOW OR I'LL DIE!" I think for some folks, addressing the "you're full now" thing is enough. But those drama-queen ghrelins were making me nuts, and I'm glad things went the way they did. That said, they will come back in 6 months to 2 years (pray for 2 years!), but not as strong.

I ad my RNY 11 years ago with a revision 9 years ago. I had a gasto-gastric fistula. My stomach and pouch grew a hole and I was feeding my stomach. After the revision I lost 122 pounds and felt great. 3 years ago I started to have knee problems. Already had back problems and arthritis, especially in my feet. The most exercise I get is in a pool or on a Gazelle, (which is like an elliptical but not as intense). I do work part time so I'm not too much of a slug-a-bed. Anyway, the reason for this is since my knee problem started I have felt more and more run down. I have had my thyroid checked a million times as well as B-12 and D. Yes, I forget my vitamins, all too often, but still do B-12 injectables. That is usually fine. D is ALWAYS low. I've started taking Hema-Plex which has iron among others in it. I'm hoping that helps. Anybody else have these problems? I've also gained about 42 pounds back. I don't and CAN'T eat a lot of sugar but I like beer. Even though I don't drink but one or two days a week, people are always telling me it's the beer. Sometimes I feel like I can't win.

I had to have spine surgery 5 years ago when my son was only 9 months old. I know the horrible pain associated ...there were times I couldnt stay standing due to the pain running down my leg. I had a lumbar fusion and have 6 screws put in my lower back and after that surgery I swore i would never have any surgery again unless i was in some sort of accident.... Fastforward 4 years later the back pain and stiffness had started to be a problem again...because i was weighing 265lbs mostly in my mid section...i had mild sleep apnea. I was a crancky miserable person specially in the mornings because of my lack of sleep ...from the apnea and back issues.... After research I decided to have the gastric bypass surgery....i didnt want back surgery or pain and health problems..and thought the gb surgery woul help overall ...Jan 31 2012 i had my gb surgery.... It was one of thest decisions of my life. I am down to 152lbs ...i am doing planks, push ups sit ups all kinds of different things i couldnt do before.... I love going to the gym...yes love he gym...that has helped with the skin ...not much lose skin.. The gb surgery helped me out of the hole, but now it is up to me to stay out of the hole.....sooo i have no more sleep issues no more back pain...feeling great ...needless to say my family is happier with me in the mornings lol....so keep going...I wish you lots of success! Remember ..the gastric bypass is a tool, not the solution.... God bless!

1 Year Anniversary and 200lbs Down!
Indieflickers posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Today is one year from my bypass surgery. So much has changed in this one year. Both my life and I are unrecognisable. Now I am going to attempt to post the obligatory before and after shots. (please disregard my messy closet in the "after" picture!) -
Anyone who has researched gastric bypass or sleeve knows it is not the easy way out. Sounds as if he maybe ignorant and needs to go to an informative seminar. Talk with your pcp and decide what you need to do for you. This is tour path, no one else's. If he is not willing to go to a seminar to learn more find a supportive friend or family member who is willing to be there for you no matter what. Good luck and god bless Sent from my SM-G900P using the BariatricPal App

I have a question for you, I just recently decided to have gastric bypass, but when I went to my doctor he gave me the option of having the gastric sleeve, I am not sure which is the better option for me. I want to see if anyone out there has had one of the other and tell me what they are happy about and why they had one or the other?
-
I was planning Gastric Bypass all the way. Had done almost all my appointments when I went to the seminar and changed to the sleeve. I liked not rerouting my intestines. I didn't really understand what the sleeve was before, and once I did the research I knew that I had changed my mind. I had surgery three months ago and still happy with my decision. 52 lbs down.

Help me please :( GERD
Losingit2018 replied to Helpme95's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did any of you have any type of reflux issues preop? This worries me a bit. Only because I do not want RNY and would be upset if I were forced to revise to it after the sleeve -

Has Anyone Ever Been Prescriped Phentermine In Addition To Their Fill?
shelbymooy replied to shelbymooy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well, I guess we all have feelings about everything. Our right! Funny thing, my MIL is in clinical trials for Allergan and the lapband and other products. My FIL was banded before 2 years before he realized the band wasn't for him, he's got a huge sweet tooth and is a big drinker. So he got the bypass, and has kept his weight off and looks fantastic. He is healthier just by his huge weightloss, although he has some other health issues that the band can't assist with. Best of luck to everyone. -
Recover time after surgery
dbrar88 replied to Monday_thru_Friday's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ended up staying in the hospital for 2 nights...but I had a band to sleeve revision. The nausea was my worst part, but thanks to a great nurse/docs, it was kept under control. I then had to ride him 4 1/2 hours, so I was a bit sore from the ride. I spent the next two days sleeping off and on, but on the 3rd day I made myself get up and out and had no problems. I would give yourself a good 7 days from the time you leave the hospital to get used to your new stomach. Don't rush it!!! Debra Band to Sleeve Revision 9/27/10 Dr. David Kim -
Omega loop gastric bypass Australia
123Go replied to thesupportedhalf's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi all... So glad to hear your stories! I'm booked in for an Omega loop in October. I posted this in another thread too, but my story is; I had a band in 2007, lots of reflux and developed terrible eating habits. Went from 118.5kgs to 83... Lots of deflations and inflations to try and manage the terrible reflux. Then got pregnant and deflated the band again....Back up to 102 by the baby's birth. Then had the band removed in dec 2012, after I found out it had slipped. Waited 6 month and revised to a sleeve in may 2013... and went from 107 to 93 within the first 2 months and since then.... well, nothing. Up and down on the same 2 kilos my surgeon said my stomach was so damaged by the band that he just couldn't make my sleeve small enough. I can eat normal sized meals... The only positive is that I don't have any reflux! I'm a bit worried about failing.... Considering I am a band to sleeve and now soon to be omega loop Please keep us posted with your progress! No one I talk to knows anything about the OL, so it's great to find these threads! ) -
Getting a Revision - but OMG NOT because of weight regain!!!!
Cheeseburgh replied to summerset's topic in Rants & Raves
Getting a revision based on medical necessity (severe GERD) is a very important distinction and is helpful for everyone to be aware of. Secondly, everyone knows that revision surgeries are generally less effective when weight regain is involved, therefore the outcomes will be different. There is no expectation of weight loss. You might want to contemplate why this angers you. -
The first two weeks are the hardest!! I was able to appreciate my surgery when I started feeling better and losing weight. Know that the pain will go away! Give yourself a good month to heal. Don't be discouraged! We've all been there, thinking the same thing! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Thanks so much. I really need to see the light at the end of the tunnel Summer Gonzalez bypass: 7/26/16

I could have had surgery in the US as many of the Drs in Tx are having to compete with prices in Mexico. I could have waited 3 months for my insurance to kick in as well, which wouldn't have been a big deal. All in all, I picked Dr Aceves over any other Dr I spoke with. It seems like whenever this topic comes up, everyone is an expert in some field or everyone is leery of those who post on certain doctors. I read several stories about hack jobs in Mexico and obviously several stories of successes. It comes down to the surgeon, not the country. I'll say this. I had a f* up of an orthopedic surgeon here in the US. He ignored all of my weeks of complaining of swelling and pain in my leg, told me to call him on monday when I was coughing up blood on friday. Never compared the size of the two legs. I ended up going to the hospital with a pulmonary embolism and nearly died. I also had to have a revision on my ankle a year later. I did my research, I even straight up asked them if they had any legal action that was ever taken against them. They lied but I only found out about it after nearly dying. No lawyer would take my case, they all said that Doctors stick together and rarely will testify against each other. The surgeon did wipe clean all my bills to him but I was still left with several thousand bills for the PE through the hospital. My surgery in Mexico far exceeded anything I have experienced in the US. The private hospital was cleaner and more well run. The entire staff was attentive and caring. Any questions I've had pre/post op have been answered quickly. If Dr A gets a bad review it hurts his rep and his pocket. He can't rely on people choosing him because their insurance covers him. He gets patients because of word of mouth, not a listing.

@JRT Mom Don't they remove some of the intestine though? And isn't recovery much harder? My primary motivation is getting healthy for my kids - but I don't want to die on the operating table or have some severe complications and leave them with just one parent I chose the band because it seemed so safe. But man, it sure sucks, and it doesn't help me. Do you like the bypass? Does it make you feel better?

Revision surgery: Why will this time be different?
KSW22 replied to KSW22's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
LisaMarrie, I appreciate your reply. Have you had your revision surgery yet? I am taking all your words in and have been thinking about this all morning. I have had mental health therapy along with my eating disorder and have worked on a lot of this in the past. I just sometimes doubt myself. If I already know what to do, why do I ignore myself? I am super grateful I have a loving husband and a best friend that both support my decision. My family is on board too but it’s my own shame of having to do this again that is difficult. I guess that’s another subject I can touch on but after 17 years of living with bypass surgery, I almost have to starve myself to lose any weight at all. Is that ring true for you too? It’s so hard to lose weight now that my stomach is stretched and having to eat 800 to 900 calories to lose weight makes for a very cranky lady. I just want to feel like this time it’s forever. I feel ready and want these thoughts I’m having are normal and others might have felt the same way. Make sense? -
As someone who is undergoing revision from lapband to the sleeve, I definitely would not advocate for the band. But you should get all of the information you can because it might be the right choice for you.

I Thought It Was Acid Reflux..now I Am In The Hospital :(
Delta_35 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well a week after surgery, I started to have signs of acid reflux. My chest was burning and food felt like it was coming up. Then it became worse. Nothing wouldn’t stay down, not even liquids. I started to become dehydrated and went to the hospital. I found out via a UGI that after I would drink or eat, that it would just sit in my stomach. It’s like my stomach is plugged right at the bottom, letting nothing pass into my intestines. They are not sure if it’s a stricture or something is stuck. Today I am going to have an Upper GI Endoscopy done and they are hoping they can use this procedure to remove the stricture or stretch that area out so food can pass. If not, then the next two options are another surgery to try to open the area by cutting it or a Gastric Bypass. Let’s just say the latter option is a no go, I rather live on a IV then have a Gastric Bypass. Please pray for me and I will keep you all posted. -

Who else is waiting on approval?
slimmerplt replied to jamari's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also have Cigna my paperwork was submitted and one week later denied. This was last month. The denial letter stated I had not met their requirement for three month supervised program which was true. I thought n was told by surgeons office they would accept weight watchers. Well they do put if supervised by dietician or doctor. Also they stated I hadn't submitted letter from another doctor recommending surgery, Ian's giving clearance. I did have letter from PCP but apparently it was not good enough. I contacted my PCP n she I hope will call cigna to see what is needed. I had originally started a three month supervised program because I thought I had too so this was actually a good thing I will finish that on 18jan. Have to see behavioral, get revised ltr and hopefully will get approved!! I hope so I'm starting g to eat everything in site n at the rate I'm going ill be 20 pounds by end of January !!! -
First of all, the fact that you have kept your 70 pounds off is a HUGE victory!! Give yourself a lot of credit, girl!! Without your band, I bet you'd be on the way back up. The bypass in not a guaranteed success, either - my sister had that done, lost almost all of her weight, and after her 2 year "window" of losing opportunity, has since gained most of it back. So, you were throwing up a lot. As you have found out, you do NOT have to have stomach wrenching vomiting to slip your band. First of all, you must promise yourself that whatever else happens, you will avoid throwing up at all costs. If vomiting comes upon you suddenly, and that is a frequent occurence, then you MUST be willing to get at least a slight unfill. Comparing fill levels is not helpful, really, because everyone is so very different. Some people don't need fills at all! It seems as though many people are waaay too tight in my opinion. Since you've already had problems with that, I would start with very conservative fills. My normal work day eating: 1 quart Water on the way in to work 1-2 very large mugs of hot tea with 1 to 2 tablespoons of half-n-half and artificial sweetner. After the tea has gone down, 1 cup of lowfat cottage cheese with 1/3 cup of bruschetta sauce mixed in. Hot tea/water as desired until lunch. 4-6 oz of meat (chicken/steak/porkchop) Hot tea/water as desired until time to leave work. 1 quart water on the way home. dinner is very varied - sometimes I have a big Protein shake blended with a banana, Vitamins, cocoa and ice. Sometimes I have Panda Express 2 item with both Mandarin chicken and eat half the chicken, rice and noodles and save the other half for the next night. Sometimes it's 4-6 oz of some sort of meat. If I go out for dinner, I'll have the salad with bleu cheese dressing, and the meat from my entree, possibly the veggies if there are any, and bread if I can get it down. Many days get interspersed with sweets/chips if they're available, but I rarely buy them for myself, so it would have to be freebies. Weekends I usually end up eating only two meals. Maybe a bowl of high Fiber Cereal and soy milk, or two eggs and a piece of buttered toast. Then a meal at a restaurant on Saturdays. Sundays are usually a sausage patty and scrambled eggs, a cookie or two after church, and 4-6 oz of meat for dinner. I know - I am WAAAAAY low on veggies. I'm working on that, off and on.

That’s only a little over 6 ft. I had the MGB on 3/1. My surgeon bypassed 11ft. I’m nervous that it wasn’t to much but he said I shouldn’t have problem losing now for sure.

Hi I got my mgb on 23rd jan. Recovering great and managing and tolerating most foods etc. My surgeon told me the day following surgery that he left my pouch bigger because it was no longer safe to operate. Also said he bypassed 2 m .....does anyone know if this will effect my weight loss.
