July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op
abchearts replied to Mom_of_Chaos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey there July siblings!! I am 15 days out from my RNY GB. Surgery date July 12th. Yesterday was my 2 week check up and all went great. (Other than I am clearly a “slow loser.” 😔) The surgery went great. One day in the hospital. I certainly felt it that day, but I came home feeling pretty good and encouraged that I was going to rock this thing. 2-3 days later a sharp pain the bottom left part of my stomach said something all together different. That pain has no dissipated and I’m now having some pain in my back. I haven’t lost as much as I thought I would, but I have the energy of a skinny 25 year old, so there’s that. I transitioned to purees yesterday. I’m starting to think my bypass may be broken. Lol. Everything I put in my mouth goes down ok, except water of course. Pre-op I loved Water, but it now just feels heavy to me. I’m getting my protein and fluids in, but mainly via Powerade zero and crystal light. I actually miss plain water. I am feeling good and excited about our journey. I did this to have a healthier life with my kids and dear Husband, so I am patiently waiting to see health improvements. I am not 40 yet, so I’ve got so much life to live and time to enjoy this new body I’m waiting for. This site has been so very encouraging. Thank you all for being so honest and willing to share. 💛 -
Lunch Meeting 1 week Post Op
2ndTimeFreedom replied to 2ndTimeFreedom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yes, all the patients (revision or traditional RNY or even gastric sleeve) are discharged on stage 2 diets (soft mushy). Prior to leaving the hospital, we all received tuna salad. This stage for us also includes soft white fish. -
VSGs who lost more than 60-70% excess body weight

@TeeBeau exactly what my surgeon said, if I can start my diet and exercise leading up to the surgery it's like giving the bypass a head start -
It sounds like you're on the right track with finding a new good doctor that you like and can trust. A revision might be the answer. Check the forums here and many people have had them and have had success with that. Hang in there.

Pre-op and obsessed?
New&Improved replied to NagathaChristie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You should be proud of your changes. I've been asked to do up to 4 weeks preop so I assume I'll lose some myself before going under the knife. People say why go under if you can lose yourself? Well the surgery is about more than just weight loss the bypass will change everything internally for us. -

Lunch Meeting 1 week Post Op
GreenTealael replied to 2ndTimeFreedom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What phase are you in your diet ? (1 week post revision, right?) Did your team speed up your diet progress? -
So I am 5 years 4 months post op and I got down to my goal weight and then about 2 years ago I started getting my cravings back and started giving into them and started putting the weight back on, I have since gained about 55 lbs back and I am very discouraged, and feel awful. I had a great surgeon that did my surgery, and since my surgery he has left and moved across the country and I trusted him and felt good with him, so after he left I started seeing another doctor in the practice he was in and do not like him, don't feel comfortable with him and so since about a year after my surgery I haven't been back? He didn't seem interested in knowing how I was doing or my progress so I didn't go back, and just kept doing it on my own, but now I am this far and gained weight and I am not happy with myself and I am back to where I was prior to surgery, except I can't eat as much, and as many things. I have made steps in seeing another doctor that a friend of mine referred me to, she goes to this other doctor and she loves her, and so I am going to meet with her and see how I feel. I am nervous that I have stretched out my stomach and I don't know what they can do for that? I am so disappointed in myself, cause I did so good for 3 years and kept it off, and I felt so good, and now these past 2 have just been down hill? Does anyone know if you stretch out your pouch do they do or will they do a revision? Also does that help with the cravings?

New and anxious
Krimsonbutterflies replied to jaymmee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, everything happens the way its supposed to. So, no worries about delay in my program. Yes, I will be able to choose and hopefully my surgeon will be available during the time I'm ready for all of this. I went to visit my friend after her revision yesterday in the hospital and this is very real for me. She has Kaiser too, I'm anxious and nervous. -
February 2019 weight loss buds
gabybab replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
5 months post-op today and down 72 pounds. It feels a lot better and I'm having more energy. I'm having trouble with my stomach. I can't really explain it, but is lower and possibly a burning feeling. It comes and goes and only lasts about 30 seconds to a minute. My 6 month follow up is in exactly 4 weeks and I will speak to my PA. We discussed it before and she said she would do a scope if it continued. So, I will be asking to do the scope. I take protonix daily, although I have missed it a few times. I sure hope it stops and won't have to do a revision. My Dr wanted me to do the DS, but I said no. However, I guess I might consider if this continues. I still have to lose 84 pounds to get to goal, and definitely will need plastic surgery on my arms, stomach and breasts. Hope everyone is in a good place and may we all continue to do well! Love this group!💕🤸♀️ -

I has bypass surgery, so it may be a little different. I had to do six months of nutrition counseling, and I needed to get my cardiology approval as soon as my last nutrition appointment happened. My surgery was scheduled about two weeks after my final nutrition appointment, and I was approved a couple days before my actual surgery date. So my entire pre-surgery journey took almost 7 months. I kept a journal on everything, and I would take it with me to all of my appointments and write down what we talked about and any suggestions any of my doctors had. Best of luck!

I kept a journal, which was excellent! Through my experience, this journey was for me and no one else, so I internalized most of the experience. I had gastric bypass in March, and at the time only my fiancé knew that I was going through with it. He was very supportive and for me, it was enough that I was still OK without having to tell my family. I didn’t even really tell my fiancé about what went on during my appointments or my nutrition visit. About two weeks before my surgery I gave him about three really good articles to read about being a partner of somebody who is going through weight loss surgery, and he read them, and he’s been wonderful about it throughout the entire journey. I took a “stay-cation” from work, and bounced back. My son doesn’t even know I had surgery. Since my surgery, I have told my grandmother, and that is the only family member that I have told. I personally have a lot of anxiety about my weight which has roots in the way my family has dealt with my weight all my life. So, I had absolutely no desire to talk about it with them. My family knew that I was on a liquid diet, which I explained was recommended to me by my doctor because I was having health problems, and they did not question it. I personally do not enjoy the positive attention from my family regarding my weight loss, so I don’t even give them the chance to talk about it with me, so there is not an opportunity for them to really question anything. Additionally, my fiancé helps change the topic if they start to try and talk about it lol! If you ever need someone to talk with, you can always message me on here! Best of luck!

Gastric bypass or sleeve

I'll add that bypass eliminated my type 2 diabetes right away! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Wow that is weird. I had the revision surgery on July 16th. Hopefully you are doing great.

I had a revision on 7/22 from vsg to RNY. My surgeon (not the one who did my sleeve) said I had tons of scar tissue and my operation took almost 4 hours total. For him it looked like I had a small leak that was never caught from my sleeve. Weirdly enough I complained of pain twice in that area and was scoped and everything seemed to look normal.

OVER THE YEARS there's evidence of way too many issues and complications and negative feedback on the band so many doctors won't even offer it anymore. I'm going for the bypass because I want something that will be permanent and will change my life.

Hey y’all! I am 1 week and 1 day post surgery. It was a lapband to bypass revision and I literally cannot stomach anything but water and some Gatorade zero. My tiny tummy and bowels are still hurting and I feel like I may never be able to consume food again. I know it’s part of the process and feeling bummed or depressed about food is very common but I just want to see if the stomach and bowel pain is common. I have no issues going to the restroom because it is straight liquid. I was back in the hospital Sunday into Monday because I ended up with cellulitis in my left side. Any insight would be appreciated.

Cost of surgery -- WOW
RickM replied to 2ndTimeFreedom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They often submit all kinds of outrageous numbers to see what sticks and then accept what is paid (particularly if they are under a network contract - then they have no choice but to accept what is paid). But I haven't seen anything that high - 80-100k submitted is not unusual but the normal contracted price is usually somewhere in the 10-20k range, maybe a bit more for a bypass. As to the insurance company asking if you have other coverage, that is just the company looking for someone else to share the cost with (though usually we see that mostly with orthopedic or injury surgeries where there is the possibility of an injury lawsuit or workers comp claim that they can hang it on, but not usually something like bariatrics that they normally have already pre-approved -
Has anyone heard of Malabsorption Gastric Bypass
RickM replied to Sharon B A's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Did he just not do any stomach reduction at all, or did he make a pouch type structure like a traditional RNY gastric bypass? If he made a pouch, even a larger one, and connected it well downstream to provide DS-like malabsorption, that would be what is known as a distal RNY, which is rarely done, but is a cousin to the traditional RNY which is primarily a restrictive procedure with a minimal amount of malabsorption added. Another possibility is that he did a DS type of intestinal routing but with a large stomach pouch similar to an RNY, and this would be a Scopinaro procedure, which was a precursor to the standard or traditional BPD DS and was rarely done in the US. Another possibility from your description is something like the old jejunolileal bypass which was a purely malabsorptive procedure done in the 60's and 70's that kept the stomach intact along with the duodenum and some portion of the small intestine but bypassed the majority of it, reconnecting things down near the colon. It was abandoned owing to a lot of complications though he may have done some less malabsorbing variation. It was mostly replaced with the now traditional RNY gastric bypass. I'm sorry that you didn't get what you were expecting, but you should be able to make this work. It is important, however, that you get a clear understanding of what exactly he did (get a copy of the surgical report for your records) so that you, and any doctor who may need to work on you in the future for whatever reason, has a good understanding of how your insides now work. -

It sounds like he did the gastric bypass part of the duodenal switch and not the sleeve part. Like people have said, you will do great with gastric bypass. I had the sleeve done and have lost almost 7e pounds. My Dr wanted me to do the DS, however for now, I chose to do only the sleeve part. Good luck! Let us know how you do. -

I know that initial thoughts must be disappointing that you did not get what you expected. However most people do very well with a bypass. Try to stay positive and see how it goes. Like with any wls you will lose the weight if you follow your plan. -

Multivitamin reaction
mediocreoblongata replied to camilleweiz's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I am pre-op gastric bypass, so bear with me on this, but I’m curious how it really goes with taking the multi vitamins when you’re only on a liquid diet. Currently I take vitamins, but I ALWAYS have to have solid food in my stomach first or else I’m probably going to throw it up. Is it somehow different after the surgery?
