    Advice from a Bypass Patient

Dody; Your a sweetheart, and you never need to apologize for "coming on so strong." Your very passionate about your stand and I very much respect you for that. Your so right, it's a matter of choice, and people need to educate themselves before making a decision. Honestly, I have no choice to go with the LapBand (because of insurance), and I'm fine with that. If it doesn't work FOR ME, I can always have it revised later. Take care Dody - Blessings to you and your family this holiday season!

    Miss my band

I self-paid for my band and it has been a great tool for my weight loss. But, if you had the band and lost it, I don't think many doctors out there are advising a replacement of a new band. re-slippage rates for those who are rebanded are ridiculously high. And the sleeve is another option, but there are not a lot of doctors who are doing them in the US with good self pay prices and stats, which means traveling abroad. And some people like that idea, and some not so much. And the credit markets are VERY tight right now, so people who got financed a year ago, with very good credit are having a hard time getting financing now, even with stellar credit. OR, the terms they are offered are less than stellar. My husband and I have said if I ever lose my band, I will immediately revise to something else, but in today's credit market, its not as easy as it used to be.
  3. My hubby had his failed revision from his Lap -Band to a RNY and the plan was to remove his gallbladder at the same time They did take out his band and his gallbladder at the same time!! 3 years later he finally had his Sleeve done. So I wonder why someone who was already having surgery and they know there is a problem with his gallbladder why they wouldn't do it at the same time.
  4. I am hoping I have evidence of slippage or erosion to show because I doubt they will cover a revision because I want them to based on my issues with the lapband.

What do I do now???? Help Please!!!!

I have a EDG done and Dr said that everything was fine and looked normal.....I am just so sick of this band. The INS denied me and the appeal cause my BMI was not 35 or above it was only 33 and my band was not the problem....(how crazy is that)....so the next thing I am going to try along with the ins lady at Dr office is now that I have gained some weight back and my BMI is at 38 and sleep apna is back and blood pressure is doing up again we are going to resmit with different reasons from having revision and see what that gets me.....I just dont understand how INS thinks that its healty to go back to the way you were before with all problems before they will do it again...going back to the Dr Thrus or Fri to re-weigh so it will be documented.....and then the waiting process starts again.....I am just so lucky to have such great husband to stand behind me makes it alittle easier.
  6. Hi there, I live in WA - but at the top end, so although Perth is my capital city, by kilometre I am actually closer to Brisbane. I had a band to sleeve revision 10 days ago in Perth. I am back home now and have lost 4kg - only 1 kg away from double digits...wahoo!!
  7. @@carolina07 I too have the band and I am revising to sleeve tomorrow. But I am so paranoid if this is the right thing for me. I had so many issues with the band that it scares me to get the sleeve its permanent. Can you please give me details as far as what you felt and comparison? Thank you

    The sleeve and hair loss.

I lost a lot of hair after my lap band surgery...now that I am trying to get the sleeve revision I am a little scared of losing more hair!! Anesthesia also sometimes causes hair loss. I am beginning to use natural oils for hair growth...such as argan oil, almond oil, castor oil, coconut oil, rosemary oil and lavender oil, it seems to be helping. Look it up online there are several different mixtures u can make.

    liquid diet

I had to do the liquid diet before my band surgery for 10 days and it was tough but I knew I had to do it because my surgeon said if I cheated at all he would know and would not complete the surgery. I have a new doctor that will be removing my band and revising to the gastric bypass on April 8 and said there is no need for a pre op diet out the liquid diet. I an doing a pre op diet on my own right now and will do the liquid diet anyway because it shrinks your liver to give the doctor more room to work. Also if the knick your liver because it's in the way, you can die. To each his own I guess and I know the importance of this and that out helps you prepare for what's about to happen to you so I will be doing this anyways.

    BCBSIL awesome News!

I haven't seen my doctor yet, my appointment is scheduled for Wednesday June 4, and I just got confirmation from my insurance that there are no restrictions for the revision from band to sleeve....I'm doing the happy dance right now and excited to hear what my Dr has say on Wednesday, I am hoping for a surgery date at my time of visit (keeping my fingers crossed)

  12. @@Lina123 I hope and pray that you get the support you need...we all need to be supported by those who are closest to us...it makes a huge difference. Thank you for replying to the topic. I'm sorry to hear about your issue w/GERD. My surgeon discussed the possible complications and concerns with me going with the sleeve, especially after reviewing the results of my Upper GI, and I finally made my decision to go with the RNY-Gastric Bypass. I have dealt with GERD for way too long and I'm ready to be rid of the nagging feelings associated with it. However, I'm also nervous about too much weight loss after having the RNY procedure, but also ask myself what is too much? Lol. I'm scheduled for surgery on Feb. 8th and I'm hoping that the loss will taper off at a "normal weight" and I am finally able to have a normal and healthy body composition. I look forward to discussing the weight-loss and maintenance plans with the Dietitian in a few weeks. As far as revisions, this has been a hot topic on this site and I'm sure if you search under the Gastric Bypass sections, you will find some answers. I wish you the best.
  13. This is refreshing to read. I have a HH. They are repairing my hernia at the same time as my sleeve. Praying for relief. My surgeon did warn me that it could get worse and revision to a bypass may be in my future. Indeed, it is refreshing to hear. I wish you the best Cindy. I just choose not to take the chance…RNY it is for me and repair of the HH simultaneously.
  14. You keep making me feel better about my decision to go with Dr. Garcia to do my revision! I'm scared and excited! To the OP I have heard nothing but great things about Dr. Garcia ????!
  15. Hi - I'm flying in on the 2nd for testing and then will be back on the 3rd for sleeve revision to bypass with Dr. Q. I'll look for you

    from band to sleeve

I had phrenic nerve pain since the day of surgery and, after 17 months, just had my band out this past Wednesday. My surgeon wanted to do a revision to the sleeve. I might've seriously considered it (may still) except I think I inadvertently discovered the source of my hunger. I decided to give it a couple months to see if I could do this on my own now that I don't have the hunger because, the truth is that if I can't control the desire to eat when the hunger is eliminated (basically what WLS does), then WLS won't help either. You might check verticalsleevetalk.com and talk to the people there. There are quite a number of people who had the revision from band to sleeve. .
  18. My husband and I both had the Lap-Band the same day and shared a room together in 2007. We did well at first because we were afraid to eat much but we both found that as we introduced more foods back into our diet that we couldn't eat the healthier foods we needed to be eating, most lean meats, eggs, salad and many veggies without it getting stuck and having terrible pain after the 1st or 2nd bites. We NEVER felt full which was what we were told would happen with the band, so we just started having foods we could actually eat. Needless to say that over the next few years he gained all his weight back and I gained mine PLUS another 15 pounds. We are at our heaviest weights ever and we are miserable. In May, I found out that insurance might cover a revision and started the process. After 2 weeks, the insurance company requested more information and I figured they wouldn't approve it BUT we resubmitted with the info. they asked for and 3 weeks later I got THE CALL that we are both approved and are on the schedule for surgery in two weeks. WOW!!!!! Just when I had lost all hope.... PAT testing is July 12th and the surgery date for both of us (again) is July 19th. Soooooo excited to have hope again and a second chance with a better TOOL that will hopefully work alot better than the 1st one. According to most of you it WILL! This site helped me stay more positive so THANK YOU to all of you!!!
  19. My Surgery date is 11-27-2012 and I start my liquid diet tomorrow. Has anyone else had a revision done and what difference can I expect? I am a little nervous.
  20. Congrats! Don't be scared. PLENTY of women don't wait the required 12-18 months. If you have had good progress with weight loss, life adjustment, psychological needs, etc that come with life with a band, then you can relax. I think the complaint I hear most from newly pregnant bandsters is they didn't lose enough weight beforehand, or they are scared of the weight gain that they worked so hard to lose. I got pregnant 8 months out after losing about 50 lbs. Depending on your restriction, your band doc can't "require" an unfill. This is your body and your baby and your choice of weight management. I had decent restriction but not overly tight prior to pregnancy and I haven't had tons of issues with the band so far, so I'm comfortable leaving the fill in as long as possible, hopefully the whole time. Some of us have VERY tight fills, and I think you may run into some issues if thats you. Other women found their band incredibly tight in the first few weeks and had to get unfilled simply to be able to eat at all. My advice would be to watch your band, if it gets too tight for too long, then unfill. I have days where mine is tight, others it's fine. I've never gone more than 1 or 2 days at a time with it being super tight, or I would unfill. Also, if you get major morning sickness, UNFILL! You don't wanna have to have band revision surgery due to a slippage.
  21. SW 280, VSG DOS 263 LW 172 but weighed 177 for about 4years. Got GERD and went up to 233! Revision to Bypass 11/2/20 and today 165! Not even a year our yet. So yes you will lose. Not as much as the first time but I’m still working out a lot and I drop when I eat more calories. I’m at 1,000-1,200 a day right now and run 5x a week 2 miles a day and weights 2x a week. I wish I would have don’t this the first time around lol BUT the surg was so painful I was like omggg why lord. My doc said well you have to understand I had to make the stomach slim again since it was stretched , THEN do the bypass so it was a lot of work. Yikes! Lol so thankful. Anyways good luck! Now I get my plastic surgery so I can feel comfy and get rid of this old skin lol

    I'm done.

I'm done with the band. I don't think it's a bad choice, but I'm just done with it. I have to have surgery and have my band removed -- the doctor is convinced that there will be too much scar tissue to have another one put in, or to have the current one repositioned (if it could be) . I'd have to wait 6 months to a year, then have another band put in. No thanks. $16,500 to lose 40 lbs. And it's been hard. I've had 10 fills/unfills now. I was completely miserable for 2 weeks after my surgery, was miserable after my slip, and am miserable when I look in the mirror and see what a failure the last year has been. I'm not looking for sympathy, or for anyone to say "but you look great" or anything like that. I'm being honest with myself. I had goals, and I failed to meet them. The lap-band, like ANY weight loss surgery solution, has a complication rate because there are, at times, complications. I rolled the dice and crapped out. Someone has to. This time, it was me. My new insurance *does* cover bariatric surgery. I don't know what it will do for me, but I'm leaving it in the hands of the surgeon I have a consult with on March 2nd. He's supposed to be one of the best bariatric surgeons in Dallas. If I get what I want, I'll have a revision to bypass (I think he only does RNY, not DS, but I'll ask, and try to investigate the differences) and it won't cost me anything. If it has to cost a little, I might be able to do it, but to be honest, my wife and I are both graduate students, and the $16,500 was my life savings. If revision will cost too much, then I'll just have the band removed. I'm pretty sure my insurance will cover that. If that's what happens, I don't know what I'll do. I imagine I'll pretty much lose my mind, or re-evaluate my decision to do without the band. Although, MY band, as it is now, is completely useless. I feel like (for some reason) my insurance will come through for me. Of course, with *my* luck, bypass will kill me. But, c'est la vie. Ou, peut-etre, c'est la mort. Either way. *shrug*
  23. Hey folks it's been awhile! I had a band revision surgery on the 5th so I am in liquid hell again. had a slip not resolved by unfilling. Feeling good not as sore since the port didn't have to be fixed. Looking forward to getting back on the "band" wagon. Have lost 8 of the 13 I put back on since I was de flated. Still down 92 lbs so I can't complain!!

    RNY from lap band

Know a few who have had it; some have maintained their weight, others haven't. Bypass is considered the gold standard because it generally results in the most dramatic/quick weight-loss, however, dramatic and quick loss is rarely ideal. To me, gastric bypass is way too invasive and I'd rather have all of me in tact. The fact that you have to worry about dumping and have to live off vitamins for the rest of your life is a turn off for me. I don't want to be taking pills everyday for the rest of my life due to the fact that my system has been altered in such a way that I can't absorb certain vitamins. Even though results are usually promising with bypass, all surgeries require a lifestyle change. Knowing how to eat and the importance of moving (note, I didn't say exercise) is critical for anyone losing weight, with or without surgery. Plenty revise to bypass, but I've also seen bypass patients revise to Lapband; it's a catch-22. If you're willing to make the needed change, any surgery will work, so will non-surgical methods.
  25. I know this may be stupid question but this sight has helped me so much! I am supposed to have band to sleeve revision oct 24th and in have to start a 2 week preop liquid diet, however the list of approved items included fruit, apple sauce, salad with fat free dressing only and hot cerel. NO meat at all. My question is after this diet I will still have to drink Protein drinks or put protein in drinks/food ad Kroger actually squeezes fresh OJ every morning and they do not put a thing in it. It is 100% just oranges squeezed - the NATURAL sugar content says 25grams but it is NOT added sugar or sweetener it is just naturally that sweet. To ME since they out absolutely nothing in it and it is straight orange I am considering that a fruit that I just don't have to peel! Am I crazy or do you guys think it would be ok to at least drink one 8 ounce glass with added protein in it a day? I figure the Vitamins in fruit couldn't hurt either. I hate fruit and healthy food but I do love that fresh squeeze OJ Opinions ...
